HOUSE in CARNAXIDE Lisbon, Portugal, 2016

Area: 1 098 sqm Client: Private Team: Humberto Conde and Tiago Franco Contribution: Full project Photography: Fernando Guerra (FG+SG)

In the house in Carnaxide we tried to establish a simple and easy relation with the place following the everyday demands. A volumetric distance between the private and the social space: one lifted in white and lite pure lines and other grabbed in way to create a relation with the plot, intended to boost the connection of the in and out living experiences. The house is organized in 3 floors: two for residence and one for garage, storage and technical zones.

REQUALIFICATION of the RIVERFRONT in VIANA DO CASTELO (competition 1st prize) Viana do Castelo, Portugal, 2014 Client: POLIS Litoral Norte Team: Flávio Barbini, Maria João Barbini, Catarina Gonçalves, Tiago Franco, Fausto Raposo, Vera Geraldes, André Costa, Fábio Neves. Contribution: Development and management of the construction project.

The perspectives to intervent on the riverfront of Viana do Castelo gives the oportunity to rebalance the natural environment, enhancing and reordering the activities connected to the river and the sea. The proposal can be synthesized in 3 points: 1. Measures to promote and rebalance the ecological system of ‘Cabedelo’, rehabilitating and protecting the dune systems , renaturalisating the degraded areas. 2. Implement , in the intervention area , an “Ecovia“, the linear element linking ‘Esposende’ and ‘Caminha’ proposed by the Masterplan. 3. Create a set of equipment (modular buildings in wood and cork agglomerate medium density) to support the different activities in specific areas along the Ecovia.

TEHRAN STOCK EXCHANGE (competition 1st prize) Tehran, Iran, 2012

Area: 30 000sqm Client: Tehran Stock Exchange Team: Alejandro Aravena, Juan Ignacio Cerdá, Lavignia Scaletti, Takuto Sando, Tiago Franco, Tomás Palmares. Contribution: Development of the schematic design.

GEOMETRY AND GEOGRAPHY The way the place influenced the form of our proposal may be understood from 2 different starting points. On one hand is the lot with its allowed occupancy at each level. On the other hand the achievement of the right working environment for Teheran’s weather. Given the amount of square meters that had to be allocated, the compact proportion of the lot and the allowed occupancy whenever we tried to solve the project in one single volume, the result was invariably very deep plans with low quality working spaces. We were looking instead for as much direct contact as possible for each working space with natural light, natural ventilation and views.

FUNCTIONS AND FORCES The first thing that wanted to respond to, was the program, the use and the set of functions that had to be accommodated in the building. Our first decision was to place the most public parts of the program in lower levels so that the access could take place in a fluid smooth way. The second difficulty was making space for such bigger volumes of air with subsequent bigger spans under a typical office floor plans that have a more conventional span. In a seismic context it has to respond to horizontal loads as well as to the gravity force such an operation may weaken the structure. Our proposal is to introduce a wall structure in the perimeter that is able to take the loads transferred to them by a triangular grid slab at the upper level of this public base. Walls on the perimeter of the building take the vertical gravity forces; arches reflect that compression is the main force in play on the edges of the building. For responding to the horizontal loads, walls on the perimeter have a slight slope so they brace seismic accelerations. We also introduced a triangular grid in plan; this way the floor geometry dissipates the seismic forces in a field instead of structure lines.

HOSTEL in ZAKROCZYM Zakroczym, Poland, 2010

A land adjacent to a village market square asks to set limit. The square want their proportion and land to be its extension. Bring the traditional image of the region in which the village is inserted, through the typical mountain house Carpathian, was the purpose to recall a vernacular architecture.

THEATRE ACADEMY at MIODOWA Warsaw, Poland, 2010

A small square in the old town of Warsaw, is bordered by two buildings that compose a music school,a residential building with blind facade and the existing theater academy. Zone of constant passage of students from both institutions become challenging to maintain the character of the small square, and make an invitation to make a break. A reinterpretation of the arches present in the place, propose to represent its pre-existence.
