POSITIVE FEEDBACK LOOP

HEALTHCARE

EDUCATION

COMMUNITY

A positive feedback loop within the community, where healthcare, education and people are connected to improve wellness. More specifically, kids can get better health care education at school and they will have positive influence on their parents and then to influence the whole neighborhood. The well-educated residents could get better health care experience in the center. Also, normally if kids get sick, it is hard for them to keep up with their school, with the new design the connection bridge allows inpatient kids to continue school.

BREAK THE BOUNDARY Women Right Museum in Central Park NYC

BACKGROUND & PROGRAM Fighting for the right of women has a long history in the United States: it went through from a dark depressive history to a bright equal history. However, breaking this process was not a simple smooth path, it was a back and forth exploration. Women art museum did not apprear a lot until now, even though there are some female artists around the world. This project is located closed by the reservior of central park in New York city. Left side is the soft reservior edge, and the right side is the rigid city block boundary‌ The project is trying to set the museum into the city and showinig the right of women.

BACKGROUND The site is located in the Tyson Center, a research center of Washington University in St. Louis. Currently, there are some research buildings, residential dorms for researchers nad studnets and a wolf center for tourists. There were many bunkers built in the 2nd world war on site. However, people do not use them anymore. The project reuse the bunkers on the both side of the road to develop the shape and functions. 2

BACKGROUND & PROGRAM

Public library system in city of St. Louis can be dated back to the year of 1865 as the Public School Library Society of St. Louis. In the beginning, it was a subscription Library open only to paying members of the residents. Then it opened to the public for reading on the premises since 1874. There are 17 branches of public libraries in the city, which include 14 main branches and 3 mini new branches. The largest and most famous one is the central branch in downtown St. Louis. The building, designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert, opened to the citizens of St. Louis in January 1912. Then in the year of 2012, the Library was closed for two years while the building was totally emptied, renewed, and refitted by Cannon Design to serve the needs of the modern library user.

However, even though there are 17 branches of the public library in the city, the branches are still not enough for some areas of the city, especially for the north part of the city. This project aims to focus on building a new public library branch in the zip code 63106 area, and provide a wonderful atmosphere to communication and hanging out for the whole community. The main design concept of this new branch is to create a proper scale of the public space, a urban living room that is open and desirable space to accumulate for the neighborhood. In the middle part of the library is a warm and friendly courtyard, which contains many small sports equipment, walking path, benches etc. The whole landscape of the courtyard extend from the inside of building to the urban area for people easily to access. Moreover, the definition of this “living room is a proper scale about public space for people to get together, which is not huge or small.

First Floor Plan

Regarding the program of the inside space, the project break the “traditional style of library, which is mainly about the book reading area inside. On the other hand, this project has a big digital reading area for modern residents to access the digital materials and experience the artificial intelligence interactions as well. The digital resources are much more efficient than the physical ones, as they could be access in a second from all over the world. The project will become a new prototype of new type of library in the 21st century.

DOUBLE LAYER ENVELOPE ANALYSIS Some parts of facade is dowble layers, in order to reflect light and enjoy wonderful light atmosphere. In summer, the movable baffle on the top of windows could be open. Air will pass through from bottom to the top of envelope. While in winter, it will close to decrease speed of air and reduce energy consumption.

SECTION AYALYSIS There is a light rail station in front of the building. When the train is passing by, it will bring speed air which can be cooled by the water before getting into the building. Meanwhile, the air can be also cooled by water, because of the direction of southeastern monsoon. Third Floor Plan

The central vertical space is able to accumulate the air inside of building and accelerate the flow speed. AIR
