ÒI pray that this ambitious and far-reaching project to create The Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences will be accomplished according to plan. I also request others, who may be interested, to extend whatever assistance they can, financial or otherwise, to help ensure the success of this historic project.Ó Ð H.H. Historic Leadership Opportunity Tibet House US (THUS), in conjunction with AIBS and CCBS, has inaugurated a capital campaign to seek major grant assistance to accomplish its long-term, $14 million project to complete in three decades the translation of the entire Tibetan Tengyur and associated Tibetan literature. Just as the 19th century West was profoundly affected by F. Max M llerÕs monumental Sacred Books of the East (SBE), the coming 21st century spiritual, scientific, and global renaissance will be powerfully catalyzed by this monumental series, Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences, published by THUS-
AIBS-CCBS in approximately 500 volumes and distributed by Columbia University Press. To date, individual donors have sponsored particular translations for $40,000 per volume. A number of important volumes presently await sponsorship. Sponsors will receive full thanks and acknowledgement in the volumes they choose to support. If you are interested in facilitating grant assistance to support this historic project, please contact our Executive Editor, Tom Yarnall, at ty37@columbia.edu.

TIBET HOUSE
Historic Tengyur Translation Initiative Tibet House US (THUS) is proud to be affiliated with the American Institute of Buddhist Studies (AIBS) at Columbia University and the Columbia Center for Buddhist Studies (CBS) in an historic initiative to support, create, and publish English translations of the entire Tibetan Tengyur (bstan Õgyur) and its associated literature. The Tengyur is a vast collection of over 3600 texts, comprised of 8Ð14th century Tibetan translations of first millennium Sanskrit texts written by over 700 Indian authors and compiled at the great Indian universities such as NÝlandÝ. This essential collection represents the distillation of the arts and sciences of the renaissance culture of early Indian Buddhist civilization, preserved and further developed over the last seven centuries in Tibet. The AIBS was foundedÑat the suggestion of H.H. the Dalai Lama and the request of the late Venerable Geshe WangyalÑwith the express mandate to accomplish this vital translation initiative. Authoritative, annotated translations from this initiative are being copublished by THUS-AIBS-CBS in the recently inaugurated series, the Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences, being distributed by Columbia University Press.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama Endorses Inititative ÒThe Buddhist culture that flourished in Tibet can rightly be seen to derive from the pure tradition of NÝlandÝ, which comprises the most complete presentation of the Buddhist teachings. As for me personally, I consider myself a practitioner of the NÝlandÝ tradition of wisdom. The works of these NÝlandÝ masters are presently preserved in the collection of their writings that in Tibetan translation we call the Tengyur (bstan Õgyur).É The Tengyur is truly one of TibetÕs most precious treasures, a mine of understanding that we have preserved in Tibet for the benefit of the whole world. I am very happy to encourage a long-term projectÉ to translate the Tengyur into English and other modern languages, and to publish the many works in a collection called The Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences.... As it grows, the Treasury series will serve as an invaluable reference library of the Buddhist Sciences and Arts.Ó
I see myself as a monk first, then as a practitioner of the NÝlandÝÉtradition of wisdom.É At this point, I donÕt say that I belong to the HõnayÝna or the MahÝyÝna traditions, but to the lineage of NÝlandÝ. Ð His Holiness the Dalai Lama, August, 2001
