Advent Adventures

The fun and markets on dynamic Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody), gourmet Dominican Square (Dominikánské náměstí), romantic Vegetable Market (Zelný trh), and Moravian Square (Moravské náměstí) will be supplemented by programmes from many cultural institutions. You can also tour the city with a guide, take a ride in a minibus, look over the city from the tower at the Old Town Hall, and escape the surface bustle in the Brno underground. You’ll be able to see the largest nativity scene in Moravia, skate on a square in the city centre, and try Turbomošt, which you won’t find anywhere else on Earth. Brno is also a city with traditional Christmas trees on its squares, and in fact had the first such tree in the country. So don’t leave this Moravian metropolis out of your plans.

NEW YEAR’S EVE IN BRNO

Christmas in Brno mostly happens amid the stalls. The centre of the city throws up unique little winter structures in which you can snuggle down, rest your feet and refresh yourself during Advent and after. These little shanty-like establishments on the squares and neighbouring streets create their own micro-worlds, places you’re happy to return to. In fact, you can stay snug right up until New Year’s Eve, before heading out to a proper party in one of the local bars or clubs. If you’d like to celebrate the end of the year more calmly, try the theatre – the National Theatre Brno and Brno City Theatre offer regular New Year’s Eve performances. Brno always welcomes the New Year festively – with a New Year’s Day concert by the Brno Philharmonic or a concert in the Cathedral of Sts Peter and Paul.
