Dear Tidal Creek Owners,

It is that time of year again; the time we set aside

I
n 1982, Tidal Creek was founded and much has changed since that time. Thirty-one years later, you can hardly recognize the Wilmington area. Population has more then tripled and so have the homes and businesses. The luxury of this growth is choices. We have a farmers market almost every day of the week and new restaurants opening all the time. This last year has also brought much more competition to your co-op and has created a new normal. We know that we are not the biggest and can’t offer everything, but we do have a lot to offer. We are truly a local business that is owned by its owners not stockholders. Just about all of our prepared foods are made on site, and all our smoothies, juices, and coffee drinks are organic. Tidal Creek houses the only bio-diesel refueling station this side of route 95. Plus, we have created an outdoor community deck for eating, music, and events. So even though we have a lot of new choices, I want to ask you to keep an old habit: shopping at your co-op.
Month! This provides a great opportunity to reflect on how the vision of Tidal Creek comes to fruition within the Wilmington community. Shopping at the Co-op gives access to some of the best locally produced food around, nourishing the health of those who enjoy it, while directly supporting

The co-op is continually looking for ways to provide support to groups working for good in the Wilmington area. Some of the ways we achieve that are by providing donations through programs like Real Change, offering a venue to hold a community events, or even connecting groups with owners who want to help. ordering specialty items, such as duck, lamb, or beef roasts. This is always an exciting time for the Co-op, and we look forward to supplying all of your staple Thanksgiving feast needs this season.
Tidal Creek is advocating for clear labeling of GMOs so that our customers can make a choice, and we have joined forces with the national “Just Label It” campaign. No matter where you stand on GMOs, it is hard to argue against the merits of labeling. It is our belief that GMOs are not natural and do not belong in our food. Today, there are products in Tidal Creek that have GMOs. Sometimes this is because sources of ingredients are not available GMO-free or because of the high cost. Much of our local milk, butter, meat, and eggs have, at some point, been fed GMO grains. The cost for these small farms to purchase GMO-free grains does not allow the

We make purchasing from local growers, producers and small farms a main priority of our daily business. We provide you with meats and dairy products that are free of hormones and antibiotics. We will purchase GMO-free products whenever possible. Are you an ingredient reader?
Tricky words like natural, clean, and ecofriendly are being used in places they just should not be. Furthermore, information about vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements, and body care products can be clouded by conflicting information, including biased studies. We need to know where our wellness products come from, just like we need to know where and how our fruits and vegetables are grown. Not all supplements are created equal, and fish oil is a good first example. Perhaps your doctor has recommended

Stores put up one tree in September and decorate it with ghosts, turkeys. Then it is finally adorned in Christmas ornaments. It takes what is already potentially a stressful time and leaves you thinking there is no time to catch your breath, much less cook a meal. The holiday season has become a whirlwind from Halloween to Christmas. The Tidal Creek Kitchen can’t do much about the ghosts and goblins, but we can sure help you out with the
that you take 1200mg of fish oil per day. Well, not all fish oil is equal in purity or potency. Milligrams refer to a raw weight of ingredients. And in this case, they don’t necessarily equal a combined value for EPA and DHA, the two main components of omega-3 in fish oil for inflammatory and mental support respectively. Take an extra minute the next time you are looking for fish oil, or another omega essential fatty acid supplement to insure that you are getting sufficient quantities of quality oil and not just paying for fats and fillers. Some of our favorite brands for purity and potency include: Vectomega, Minami Platinum, and the entire Nordic Naturals line. Nordic Naturals is on sale October 2-15th. Now, let’s look at vitamin and mineral supplements. There is a difference between whole food and food-based. Many supplement
labels include a blurb on the package identifying whole food nutrients. That blurb does not necessarily mean that the vitamins and minerals are whole food. There is a difference between whole food vitamins and those that contain isolate vitamins, but are “enriched” with food. Careful label reading can ensure that you are getting exactly the product you want. If you have questions while shopping, please don’t hesitate to ask our wellness staff.
Thanksgiving Meal. Our Thanksgiving menu includes all natural and organic options for everyone. We offer all the traditional sides, prepared with classic recipes or adapted to appeal to the vegan and gluten-free diner. Let us do all the prep work for you. You can just reheat and serve. Our sides are generously portioned to feed eight. We also offer individual plates for those who are eating with just a small group. In the prepared foods case, we will also have smaller portions of sides, especially stocks, gravies, and cranberry sauces. We don’t have the oven capacity to cook a turkey for you, but we do offer a meal option that includes everything except the turkey and pumpkin pie. Of course Thanksgiving demands dessert. Tidal Creek bakers are working to get our organic, artisan pumpkin pies to the masses.
Everything from our bakery is made from scratch with the best ingredients. Make sure you checkout our menu for holiday pies and cakes. Of course you don’t want to forget our regular items too. Having a large gathering and need a second option? What goes better with pumpkin pie than our delicious carrot cake? You can find the Thanksgiving menu in this newsletter on page 4. When you know what you want, just give the kitchen a call. The popularity of our Thanksgiving meal grows every year. That means we are looking forward to a lot of calls in November. We all love to cook for the family on special occasions, and we think of you as our extended family. We are thankful for the opportunity to help make your holidays a little less stressful.

The Tidal Creek Wellness Department is committed to providing its customers with superior quality supplements and body care products. We select goods from companies who, like Tidal Creek, have policies in place to control the use of unsafe ingredients and ensure that products and processing have the least amount of negative environmental impact. The Wellness staff strives to have reliable information available about the benefits and effectiveness of our products.
The Co-op Kitchen Team is committed to providing the healthiest products for ourselves and our planet. We avoid the use of any products with high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. Organic products are central to our department and we weigh carefully the choice between them and conventional products when availability or financial concerns cause us to make this choice. Developing relationships with local food producers and companies that share the Co-op’s vision is also of central importance to us. We understand that our effort to bring well-prepared, fresh foods to our customers contributes to a larger ecological and cultural mission.

These are the folks who help our community grow, and we hope you will support them by enjoying their products. Just look for the local shelf tags throughout the store!
Bear Branch Mill products If you’re looking for a good bowl of grits to give your holiday guests a truly Southern Thanksgiving morning, Tidal Creek now carries Bear Branch Mill products. This company, based out of Ash, NC, uses a millstone from 1923 to make truly whole grain products which retain the richness and nutritional value most modern grinding techniques destroy. We carry Bear Branch yellow grits, white cornmeal, and stone ground salt.

There’s been a little label change to one of our most popular local products. Elderlife Elderberry products are now called Norm’s Farm. Happy Co-op Month! Collaborate, Communicate, Cooperate & Make a Difference! BY Jessica Dillon Front End Manager
W
hen shopping at Tidal Creek Co-op, you immediately give back to the community and make a difference. Whether it is the farmer growing your fresh produce, the aromatherapy oils made in downtown Wilmington, the shots of wheatgrass grown by Progressive Gardens, or simply rounding up your purchase with the Real Change program; these little things can add up very quickly. Making a difference in the community by supporting and rewarding those who have always been and continue to be behind the Co-op is a must. The first way that Tidal Creek supports the community is by just being here. We are “locally grown, community owned.” We do not have shareholders, CEOs, CFOs, or public stock. Our Owners buy equity in the store once a year. This ownership is key to how the Co-op operates. Not only does the ownership give the customer discounts within the store, but it also gives the customer much more of a voice than at a conventional grocery store. Employees at Tidal Creek report to their managers, managers report to the General Manager, and the General Manager reports to the Board. The Board consists of Owners just like you. Any current owner can run for election on the Board. The people in our community hold us accountable; and Tidal Creek is held accountable to you, your wants, and your needs. The Co-op business model is put in place so that no one person is benefiting more than others. It is to ensure equality

and prosperity in its social and economic impact. Co-ops help support local food systems, provide quality jobs, have some of the highest environmental stewardship amongst grocers, and promote healthy and sustainable foods and lifestyles. To easily compare a Co-op verses a conventional store, take a look at a few statistics. A conventional grocery store may have as little as 65 average local suppliers, 2% organic groceries and 12% organic produce. Compare these numbers to a co-op’s 157 average local suppliers, 48% organic groceries, 82% organic produce. The Co-op more than doubles the conventional store’s numbers.
Knowing that the Co-op gives back, hopefully, will entice our Owners and non-Owners to give back as well. In replacement of the Button-Up program, Tidal Creek now has a new program, Real Change, to increase our impact on the community. Introducing the program has been a huge success. Within just the first day of rollout, we were able to donate more in one day than the previous program generated in an entire quarter.
October is CO-OP MONTH and Tidal Creek has added an additional Owner Appreciation Weekend Sale to celebrate our Owners! SATURDAY, OCT. 19TH & SUNDAY, OCT. 20TH
Active Owners receive a 10% discount all weekend.
8 October - November 2013
Is this program simple? Is my money going to someone I know or have an association with? Does my money stay local? Will I be rewarded for my good deeds? The answer to all of these is yes! This new program is easy. At the end of each purchase, you have the option to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar. This is something very small, anywhere from 1 penny and up. By simply rounding up your purchase, you will have spent less than $1.00. But that adds up! If everyone can donate their change, we can make a real impact in our community. Feast Down East is the select charity through the end of January 2014. Cape Fear River Watch will be the select charity February-June 2014. So we know how the community can be rewarded by shopping, how about our Owners? Not only do you get the sense of shopping locally and helping your community, but we have put some great new programs in place and tweaked some so Tidal Creek can give back to our Owners even more. First off, the annual Owner Picnic is on October 5th at Jones Family Farm. Bring the kids, and enjoy a fun filled day touring the farm, eating some great food, and spending time with loved ones and good friends of the Co-op.
We are also adding yet another Owner Appreciation Weekend!
This is another chance for you to save 10% on everything in the store all weekend long. Owner Appreciation Weekend will be held October19 - 20. Any vitamins you have been holding off on purchasing? Holiday favorites you need to test-drive before the big day? Sweet treats you would like to stock up on? If any of these sound like you, then don’t hesitate to come in and do some big shopping on that weekend. Not only are you getting an automatic 10% off everything in the store, you can also use your wild card (5% off) on the back of this newsletter, and any manufacturers coupons you may have.
Our new Owner Rewards Program is in full swing as well. Most are hopefully familiar with the new rewards program. If not, you are in luck. With a current ownership, you have been accruing points since July 1st. For every purchase you make with your ownership, you receive a point for every dollar you spend. After reaching 400 points, an email will be sent to you notifying you of a $5.00 off coupon. To access your coupon, sign in to tidalcreekrewards.com with your Owner number and the email address the Co-op has on file. Print the coupon, and bring it in on your next shopping trip. It’s that simple! If you have not received an email yet telling you about the program, check with your cashier to make sure we have the correct email address. Then, you are on your way. Not only is the Co-op a place that gives back to the community and its Owners, but now, Owners can make a huge impact themselves just by doing their everyday
shopping at Tidal Creek. The Co-op inspires people to do more locally and globally. With an ownership, purchasing locally, the real change program, and understanding the Co-op business model, you too can make a huge difference in your community and leave an environmentally sound legacy. By promoting healthy and
sustainable foods, Tidal Creek Co-op is making a difference. You can make a difference by renewing your ownership, becoming an Owner, or simply sharing how a Co-op benefits the local community with a friend. Tell everyone you know if we Co-op together, we can build a better future for generations to come join us in making a difference!

The Importance of Gratitude By Dr. Kim Turner, ND, CBS, CNHP Studies have shown that our thoughts can actually create physiological changes in our bodies that affect our mental and physical health. This complex relationship between our thoughts and our physical well being takes place in the limbic system of our brain, known as our mind-body connection. Basically, what we think about directly affects how we feel both on the emotional level and the physical level. When we increase our positive thoughts like gratitude, we stimulate certain areas of the brain to release endorphins, which create a sense of well being and happiness. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth have reported that people who express their gratitude daily, whether by keeping gratitude journals or discussing their gratitude, are more alert, enthusiastic, and determined. They experience lower levels of depression and stress. They also report higher levels of energy and better sleep quality and duration. As fall arrives, we gather the harvest and prepare to settle in for the winter. Let us also take time this season to gather our thoughts of those things we are most grateful for. It could be family, friends, a parking place, the kindness of a stranger, or the benefits of being a member of Tidal Creek Co-op! The popular movie, “The Secret” talked about the Law of Attraction, which states that whatever you think about or talk about will be drawn into your life. So thinking about what you are grateful for will draw more of that into your life. It certainly seems worth a try!

Port City Swappers is a monthly food and beverage swap that takes place on the last Sunday of every month. A food swap is a recurring event where members of a community share homemade, homegrown, or foraged foods with each other. Swaps allow direct trades to take place between attendees, e.g., a loaf of bread for a jar of pickles or a half-dozen backyard eggs. No cash is exchanged, and no goods are sold. Diversify your pantry and go home happy and inspired while meeting your neighbors and building your community! The swap for October will be on the 27th, from 4-5 pm at 317 Castle Street. Email portcityswappers@ gmail.com to find out details and to RSVP.

Partnering with UNCW to Grow the Co-op
Tidal Creek is partnering with researchers at the Cameron School of Business – UNCW Profs. Donald Barnes & Vince Howe and Doug Hoffman from Colorado State Univ. – to develop a survey and competitive analysis report designed to strengthen the Co-op’s position relative to Whole Foods, Trader Joes and other competitors. The survey, which will focus on ways Tidal Creek can “Delight” our customers, will be sent out in mid to late October. The survey results, and other industry and market information, will be used by a Professional MBA Team to recommend growth strategies for the Co-op’s future. Please support us in these efforts to improve our services to existing and new customers by completing the survey. Thanks in advance for your help. www.tidalcreek.coop 13
