BOARD NOTE

Welcome Jason Blake-Beach

A

s our Tidal Creek family welcomes the warmer weather, we are also transitioning to a new beginning for our Co-op. For the past six months, the Board of Directors has been hard at work searching for a new General Manager. This has truly been a practice of the second cooperative principle in action: Democratic Member Control. You contributed to this hiring process last September when you cast your vote to elect the new Co-op Board members. When our current GM decided to transition to Grocery Manager of the Co-op, we formed a search committee and reached out to staff for their help in finding the right leader for the team. Owners and staff offered their support in spreading our posting around and we feel that we’ve found the perfect fit to lead our Co-op. Jason Blake-Beach comes to us from Greenstar Co-op in Ithaca, New York (www.greenstar.coop), and formerly First Alternative Co-op in Corvallis, Oregon (www.firstalt.coop) and Alberta Cooperative Grocery (www.albertagrocery. coop) in Portland, Oregon. He brings along a decade of experience working in food co-ops, his wife Natasha, and four-

month-old daughter Ruby. If anyone has any input that may make his transition to Wilmington easier, please feel free to reach out to any member of the Board of Directors. This process would not have been a success without the support of Owners who care for their community and the future of their food Co-op. The Board would like to thank everyone involved, especially those who offered constructive input throughout the process. Your contributions were invaluable in making this a success. We’re stronger together and excited to welcome Jason to Wilmington, Tidal Creek and the Co-op Family.

Congratulations to Tidal Creek for heading up the SE Region’s top Right-to-Know (about GMO) Grocers chosen by ORCA! You rock. -Joanne P.

I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Tidal Creek Co-op and their staff. I live in Jacksonville and was in town to do some leafleting at UNCW. I realized that my phone was about to die, and with the weather being awful and their being tornado watches I was scared to drive home without a phone. While they were unable to help me, they did their best to try to find me a phone charger while I was in the store. Even a customer was helping! Amazing service as always, love you guys! -Christina H. We’re so glad we could help you out even a little during a stressful afternoon! We do have some pretty awesome customers:)

I would like to see the Co-op have more products that are either salt free or no salt added and also have more products that are sugar free or low sugar. These type of products could be listed for a hand-out and greatly help with both getting new customers and telling regular customers. What do you think? I am not the only ones that need or want these products. I often hear people ask for them. - JoAnn F.

Thanks so much for the suggestions JoAnn. We’ve sent your list to our grocery buyer to see if we can get some more items in and work on hand-out for customers looking for these things. Comments or Suggestions? Submit them at the Customer Service Desk or email us at mail@tidalcreek.coop. www.tidalcreek.coop 3 www.tidalcreek.coop 3

We are starting to see some great local produce come through the department.

We are so lucky to have access to some of the best local farmers in the state of North Carolina: Stefan from Black River Organic Farm in Ivanhoe, NC, and Herbie Cottle from Cottle Organics in Rose Hill, NC. We are currently trying to access as much local produce as we can find, and these two farmers are really good at what they do! Let me give you an example of how hard these guys work. One Thursday night, I realized I had forgotten to put in an order with Herbie for Friday. So I sent him a text with my order at 10:00 p.m. Figuring he would be asleep, I apologized for texting so late. He replied within 30 seconds. “No problem, anything

CO-OP SCOOPS LOCALLY OWNED for 32 years – Happy Birthday Tidal Creek!

July 2 marks Tidal Creek’s 32nd anniversary as Wilmington’s first and only Cooperative Food Market. The Co-op began as an idea that we still embody today – a group of people wanting better food for themselves and their families. We are owned by you – our customers – and that makes us very different from other national chains owned by investors outside of the community. Our sustainable model is dedicated to meeting the needs of our owners and the local community. To celebrate our birthday this year, we will be honoring our roots, giving back, and staying local – supporting local farmers and food producers, reinvesting in the community, and rewarding our Owners!

This year we launched our REAL CHANGE “Round Up at the Register” Customer Donation Program and it has been a big success, in total raising close to $2,000 for the two organizations involved. Your donations made a big difference with Feast Down East and Cape Fear River Watch this year. Thank you for supporting these amazing local organizations and the work they do to nourish our community. We will be excited to announce the two new REAL CHANGE recipients in early June. Keep an eye out for details and remember to “Round Up” and make a difference next time you purchase something at the Co-op!

Growing Local Progressive Farms Brings Micro-Local Food to Tidal Creek

I

t’s summertime and Progressive Gardens & Progressive Farms are proud to be bringing micro-local food to Tidal Creek Co-op. It takes an average of 1500 miles for the average meal to get to a plate. But in our case it takes under a mile! Progressive Gardens has been growing wheatgrass for the deli for many years, but Progressive Farms has recently started stocking the Co-op with greens, peppers, tomatoes, and much more to come. Our methods are beyond organic, using techniques such as compost tea, Albrecht mineral balance, a lot of love, and planting by the celestial rhythms using the Stella Natura planting and harvesting calendar. We recently introduced bees and chickens into our urban farm at 6022 Oleander Drive. Please, come by and meet our new farm hands for yourself. We are also interested in connecting with people who want to grow food to develop their own personal agriculture, or even get started with a career in farming through our Food Farms and Food Lawns programs. Food Lawns is a part of our working urban farm. “Home Growers” buy in for a crop share placed in their landscape that pays them in food, gardening supplies, and cash. We will be hiring “Branch Managers” to do all of the farming in order to create a neighborhood by neighborhood food system. We are broadening this vision to larger tracts of land with our Food Farms initiative in an attempt to put unused land into production. If you have the land, we can help you farm it. With your help we can turn the Tidal Creek produce department into the first micro-local market on the planet! Send an email to grow@ foodlawns.com to get in touch on our Food Farms or Food Lawns opportunities.

Tidal Creek and Progressive Gardens & Progressive Farms share the same vision: growing more nutritious food closer to the people who eat it. Look for us at the Riverfront and Poplar Grove Farmers markets, and on the shelves at Tidal Creek Coop. Thanks for your support, and let us know how we can be of service.

Eat Local!

Try Downeast Connect

T

idal Creek is proud to be partnering with Down East Connect to bring you an even wider variety of farm fresh local products this summer. Down East Connect is an amazing organization that offers local seasonal variety and justpicked freshness with free membership and deliveries to local connection points including Tidal Creek Co-op.

Who is Down East Connect?

“Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.” - Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin Down East Connect is a not-forprofit organization that works with local producers and consumers to create an online “virtual farmer’s market.” Membership is free and members can fill their virtual carts with orders to various local farms. Orders placed online are aggregated and delivered to Wilmington area “connection points” twice weekly. Buyers can then drop by and pick up the freshest, most delicious produce available!

What does Down East Connect do?

As commercial grocers stock their shelves with colorful boxes of food-like products that have questionable nutritive values, small farmers are facing insurmountable challenges from rising costs and constant pressure from big agriculture. Down East Connect offers local farmers the option of selling directly to an urban market with minimal marketing, transportation, and packaging expenses. Wilmington consumers have the opportunity to buy local produce directly from local farmers.

Why use Down East Connect?

Local farmers support Down East Connect because its wide marketing reach allows them entry into a market that they would not otherwise be able to service. In addition, Down East Connect shares every food dollar sold with the farmer on an industry-leading 80-20 split. And because orders are paid for when they are sold, farmers are able to more accurately gauge production levels, which reduces waste and spoilage. Consumers support 8 June - July 2014

Down East Connect for a variety of reasons. Whether you chose your food based on taste, convenience, local seasonal varieties, diet restrictions, or nutritional value, Down East Connect delivers! Because all of the food available on the Farmer’s Fresh Market is from within a 60-mile radius of Wilmington, the quality and freshness is never compromised and artificial preservatives are never added. Down East Connect sees the value of educating consumer on exactly where their food is coming from and what goes into producing it. We highlight the economic and environmental impact of buying locally. This approach emphasizes a positive effect on the producer, consumers and the environment. Down East Connect is living proof that local agriculture is of great value to the community. The organization owes all of its success to the community we serve. From the supportive, long-standing partnerships with our connection points (including everyone’s favorite neighborhood Co-op, Tidal Creek), to innovative and fresh ideas from our farmers and participation from food-loving locavores, we have been able to grow and refine our services to

become the efficient model we are today.

What is in the future for Down East Connect?

Industrial agriculture has taken its toll on the health of all of us, and small farmers shoulder the burden of saving our local food systems. Down East Connect aims to dig in with them, working around the clock to connect our urban buying clubs with our rural agrarian friends who are using innovative methods to grow and produce some of the tastiest southeastern North Carolina products available. As awareness of our flawed commercial food systems spreads, our organization has grown from a love of Southern food and pride in southeastern North Carolina agriculture to encompass the answers to many questions related to food security: What are we eating? Who grew it? How did they grow it? And why does it matter? We will continue to create and build upon existing partnerships. In the coming months, we will be announcing new and exciting programs that allow us to increase the services we offer to the community.

Healthy Sun Protection

Choosing the Best Sunscreen for Those Long Days at the Beach BY Dr. Amy Hawkins, ND Doctorate, Naturopathic Medicine

H

appy Summer Solstice! Let’s talk about healthy sun protection! We all know about the importance of sunscreen to help prevent sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer, but have you heard that sunscreen really isn’t the best protection? And did you know that some sunscreens may actually do more harm than good? It’s true. There is no doubt that UV radiation is harmful. However, most sunscreens block only UVB rays and only prevent sunburn and some forms of skin cancer. This is a major problem because UVA rays are associated with melanoma, which is the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

Researchers have actually found that the highest rates of melanoma occur among people who use the most sunscreen. Why? Sunscreens give us a false sense of security, allowing us to stay out in the direct sun for too long without getting sunburned. During those long hours, UVA rays cause a lot of skin damage. Additionally, many sunscreens actually contain chemicals that may promote the development of skin cancer. Yikes. The very best defense against getting too much harmful UV radiation is covering up. Three major public health authorities – FDA, National Cancer Institute and International Agency for Research on Cancer – have concluded that sunscreens alone do NOT reduce the rate of skin cancer. This means you must use protective clothing, shade and good timing. Wear your hat, sunglasses and longsleeves. Relax in the shade. Be active in the early morning or late afternoon (UV radiation peaks between 10 am and 3 pm). We all love those long days at the beach, so choosing the best sunscreen is essential. The first step is to be sure that you use a “broad-

spectrum” sunscreen, meaning that it provides protection against UVB and UVA rays. The second step is to consider the ingredients in your sunscreen and whether they might do more harm than good. Read ingredient labels very carefully. You have a choice between chemical formulations, mineral formulations (which contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide) or combined chemical and mineral formulations. Whichever sunscreen you choose, it should be water-resistant and SPF 30+. One of the most common sunscreen chemicals, oxybenzone, is often recommended because it is the only FDA-approved blocker of UVA rays. However, it is also a synthetic estrogen that is easily absorbed and acts as a hormone disruptor. To make things worse, oxybenzone may actually contribute to skin cancer by releasing free radicals. It should absolutely be avoided. Many other chemical blocks have similar problems. But vitamins are OK, right? Not always. Recent studies have found that sunscreens containing vitamin A in the form of “retinyl palmitate” and “retinol” may cause more rapid development of skin cancer and other skin lesions. Vitamin A is an important antioxidant, but you should get it by eating lots of orange and red vegetables, not by rubbing it on your skin. So what’s a conscious shopper to do? I recommend that you choose mineral formulations containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. These minerals provide excellent UVB and UVA protection and are much safer than any chemical formulations on the US market. Be sure to choose creams instead of powders or sprays because even mineral blocks can be very harmful if inhaled. If you absolutely can’t stand mineral sunscreens (I know, they leave a white film), then choose chemical formulations that contain only avobenzone and/or Mexoryl SX as the active ingredients. These are the safest chemicals that block UVB and UVA rays. They also stay where they belong – on the skin – so they don’t act as hormone disruptors. You can get more information on sun safety by checking out the Environmental Working Group’s 2013 Sunscreen Guide at

www.ewg.org/2013sunscreen (the updated 2014 Guide comes out on May 21). They have lists of the best and worse sunscreens, complete with ingredients and safety ratings. See how yours measures up. These researchers have worked hard to put so much information at your fingertips, so use it! Your skin will thank you.

Nature, in one of its most powerful forms is waiting for you, according Worwood. Presently, there are approximately 300 essential oils, which between them constitute an extremely effective medical system. Each oil is used for diverse purposes. For example, she cites peppermint oil as an anti-inflammatory used to treat rheumatism and arthritis, and it is prescribed by doctors for the relief of discomfort in the digestive system under the name “Colerin.” This is one of the many oils that she cites that has more than one purpose. About 7 years ago, I started to become more interested in the process of organic food production and the importance of using natural farming techniques for the preservation of soil and human health. When a position in the produce department opened up here at the Co-op, I knew it would be a great opportunity to further my education and give me access to a world of knowledge held by our extremely resourceful staff. All we want is for you to join our Eat Local Challenge. As we move into our 32nd year at the Co-op, we want to celebrate one of our favorite cooperative principles—concern for the community—and that’s all about supporting LOCAL!

Drop by the Co-op and pick up some local honey!

The Eat Local Challenge is a summer tradition at Tidal Creek. It’s a fun way for you to get actively involved in doing more to support our local economy. Challenge yourself to increase your local shopping for just one month. It might be easier than you think! Through the challenge, we hope to help you explore the reasons supporting local is important and find ways to make your transition to more local a smoother one. There are many benefits to buying local: it’s better for the environment, the local economy, food is fresher adn often tastes better, and many more!

What is the Eat Local Challenge?

We’re challenging you to eat more local foods whether they’re from farmers’ markets, local CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture), your garden or our store. This year’s challenge runs from June 16th to July 15th. The challenge is going to be a fun interactive experience with some great local prizes. For information about joining the Eat Local Challenge and to find out more details, please visit the Tidal Creek Co-op website (tidalcreek.coop), our Facebook page or inquire in-store at the Customer Service Desk. We look forward to kicking off the Eat Local Challenge with you as we celebrate our love of all things local and 32 years of Tidal Creek Co-op!
