THEOLDESTBOARDGAMES
•Theworld’soldestplayableboardgame wheretherulesareknownistheRoyal GameofUr.Itwascreatedinwhatisnow Iraqaround2500BC.Gameboardshave beendiscoveredallovertheMiddleEast, Crete,andSriLanka.Themostfamousone wasfoundintheRoyalTombsofUrin ancientIraq,fromwhichthegamegetsits name.Thegamewaslikelycalledsimply “thegameof20squares”backthen.Even KingTut’ssenetboard(seenextpage)had thisgameetchedintotheotherside.We knowtherulesofthegamebecauseacurator attheBritishMuseumtranslateda cuneiformtabletwritteninMesopotamiain 177BCwhichexplainedtherules.Modern versionsareavailable.
•ThegamecalledGiocodell’Oca,meaning GameoftheGoose,wasthefirstboardgame thatwasproducedcommercially.When PhilipIIofSpainreceivedacopyasagift fromDukeFrancescodeMedicisometime inthelate1500s,itbecamealltherage. Copiesofthegamedatingbetween1774and thelate1800sincludetherulesinFrench, GermanandItalian.

KINGTUT’SGAME
•WhenKingTut’stombwasexcavatedin 1923,archaeologistsfoundfourboard gamesamongthetreasures.Oneofthem wasrecognizedbytheresearchersbecause identicalgameshadbeenfoundinother tombsandamongotherruins.
•Thegameboardhad30squares. Hieroglyphsappearedonsomeofthe squares,thoughwhichsquaresvariedfrom gametogame.Gamepieceswerevariously conesorspoolsorfigurines.Researchers knewthatthegamewascalled“senet” whichmeans“passing”buttherulesofthe gameeludedthem.

•Theoldestsetdatestoabout3000BC,the timeancientEgyptwasfounded.Other excavationselsewhereshowedthatthesame gamewasbeingplayedbyAlexanderthe Greatnearly3,000yearslater.Hieroglyphs ofvariousagesdepictthegamebeing played,andancientgraffitiboastedabout winningthegame.Gameboardswere scratchedintothefloorsoftemples,carved inancientwoodenloadingdocksonthe Nile,andwrittenaboutonapapyrusscroll. ArtworkonthewallsofNefertari’stomb showedherplayingthegameagainstan invisibleopponent.Thegameismentioned intheBookoftheDeadwhichwaswritten aroundtheyear1250BC.
•Useofthegameseemstohavetaperedoff afterthefallofRome.Theruleswerelostto history.Soperplexedwerearchaeologists aboutthisenigmaticgamethatin1946, researchersattheMetropolitanMuseumof ArtcalledinGeorgeParker,founderof ParkerBrothersgamecompany,andasked himwhathethoughttherulesofthegame were.Parkerinventedhisownsetofrules, thoughitwasallconjecture.ParkerBrothers releasedamodernversionofthegame whichenjoyedmoderatesuccessandisstill availabletoday.

Eventhoughthefattheorywasshotdown2 decadesago,wehaveawholeindustryinvested inkeepingtheliegoing.Itamazesmetothisday howslowthemediaistoreleasetheinfothat debunksit.Slowlytheyare.In1984Time magazinedidanarticlewhichdemonized cholesterol,onlytodoanarticlein2014,both frontpage,vindicatingit.Thetitle?“Eat Butter”.IntheMarch2014issueofAnnalsof

Infact,inthe60yearperiodbetween1910and 1970,fatwasrestrictedfromourdiets(dropped
from83%to62%-butterdroppedfrom18 poundsto4poundsperpersonperyear),obesity andcardiovasculardiseasewentthroughthe roof.Duringthissametimeperiodvegetable oils,margarine,shorteningandotherrefinedoils increased400%andsugarincreased60%.Since 1970thosenumbershaveskyrocketed. ToattractwesterntravelerstoJapan,the governmentofJapancommissionedAmerican architectFrankLloydWright(1867-1959)to designtheImperialHotelinTokyo.Wright'sallencompassingdesignsforhisbuildingsincluded almosteveryitem,includingdinnerware. KnownastheCabaretpattern,thisporcelain dinnerwarewasdesignedfortheCabaretDining RoomoftheImperialHotel,whichopenedin 1923.Thecircularart-deco-inspireddesignwas Wright'sinterpretationofchampagnebubbles overflowingacrosstheplacesettings.The strategicallyplacedredonthecup'srimhasbeen suggestedtoconceallipstickprintsfromwomen drinkingfromthecoffeecups.
Thedinnerwarewasoriginallyproducedby Japan'sNoritakecompanywithreproductions madebyTiffany.TheImperialHotelwas demolishedin1968,butitsentranceandlobby havebeenpreservedandcanbevisitedatJapan's Meiji-mura,anopen-airarchitecturalmuseum andpark.
