Gentlemen,startyourengines!It’stimetorev upsomefactsonsomeofourfavoritemuscle cars.
•Thesehotcarsweren’toriginallycalled “musclecars.”Theywereinitiallyreferred toas“Supercars.”Theclassicmusclecarera wasfrom1964to1974,althoughsome wouldarguethatitendedin1971,when manufactureofhighcompressionengines withhighhorsepowertorqueceased.
•Theterm“musclecar”usuallyappliesto two-doorcarswithrearwheeldrive,with highperformanceV-8engines,dualexhaust, aimedatyoungbuyerswithanaffordable costinthe$3,000to$4,000range.
•There’ssomedebateastowhichwasthefirst musclecar,butmanyenthusiastsagreethat itwasthe1964PontiacGTO.Withits389-ci (6.3L)V8engine,itcouldgofrom0to60 in5.7seconds.ItsnamesakewastheFerrari 250GTO,whichstoodforGranTurismo Omologato,althoughsomeclaimitstoodfor “GrandTempestOption,”astheGTOoption couldbeaddedtothePontiacTempest hardtop,coupe,orconvertiblefor$295. OthernicknamesincludedTheGoat,The Tiger,andTheGreatOne.WhileGM expectedsalesof5,000thefirstyear,GTO saleswentbeyondtheirwildestimagination with32,450cars.In1966,theGTOwas madeamodelofitsown,settingahighesteversalesrecordforamusclecar

•Oldsmobile’sresponsetothesuccessofthe GTOwasthe442,anoptionpackageadded totheOldsF-85coupefor$285ortothe better-equippedCutlassfor$136.The442 deriveditsnamefromits4-barrelcarburetor, 4-speedmanualtransmission,anddual exhausts.Withits310-horsepowerengine, the442reached60mphin7.5seconds. Althoughthecarhandledbetterthanthe GTO,thesaleswerenowherenearthe Pontiacnumbers.Oldsmobilefailedto marketthe442properlytoyoungbuyersas afasthotrodasPontiachaddone,andsales wereadismal2,999units.

•ThefirstChevellerolledofftheassembly linein1964andwasproducedfor13years in10differentplants,8intheU.S.and2in Canada.1969wasthebestyearforsales numbersoftheChevelle.Inthe1960s,the basemodelpricewas$1,500,butwithadded options,suchastrim,thepricecouldinchup toaround$2,500.Inthelate‘60s,Chevy manufacturedaCanadianversionknownas theAcadianBeaumont,withadifferent grilleandtrim.
•The1970Chevellewastheonetohave!It hadthemostpowerfulengineavailable, withthe454-ciengineat450HP.TheSS396 was1970’shighest-producedmusclecar,at 53,599units.TheSS454LS6modelhad560 HP,100HPmorethantheotheroptions,but couldonlycomeinasthesecond-fastestof theyear,behindtheCuda,whichweighed 500lbs.less.
•BuickreleasedtheGSin1965asanoption onitsexistingSkylark.The“GranSport” wasaluxurious,comfortable,highperformancevehiclethatusedthefull-size 401-ciV8engine.About16,000weresold thefirstyear.In1968,Buickdramatically changedthelook,withareductionin wheelbaseof3inchesand4.4inchesof overalllength.
•Thewaysomeitemsarepackagedthese days,youneedtobeHoudinitogetinto them.Whenyou'redealingwithblister packs--itemssealedinsideahardplastic wrapperthatlookstobeheatcrimpedonthe outsides--tryyourcanopener.Youcanrun itaroundtheedgeofstubbornplastic packages,enoughtogettheitemout.It's moresecurethanacarpetknifeorrazor.
•Wanttobeabletotellataglancewhichkey belongstothefrontdoor,theshed,your grandma'shouse,etc.?Raidyour(oryour wife'sordaughter's)stashofnailpolishto paintthetopsofkeystocolorcodethem.



•"Styrofoamtraysthatcomewithmeatorin theproduceareaareveryhandyhelpersfor lotsoflittlejobs.Ifyoursarecleanand unmarred,washwithhot,soapywater,rinse anddryforlater.Theyareperfectfor sendingafriendhomewithleftovers,asyou cancoverthemealwithplasticwrap.There isthennoneedtoreturnaplate."--D.in Indiana

•The1968firstgenerationofthePlymouth RoadRunnerwasbasedononeofPlymouth’s successstories,theBelvedere.RichardPetty hadwon27NASCARGrandNationalraces ina1967Belvedere.Plymouthscaledbackthe amenitiesontheRoadRunnertokeepitunder $3,000.Therewasnocarpeting,air conditioning,trim,radio,cruisecontrol,or bucketseats.Thoseoptionswereavailableata premium.Itwasthecheapestandthefastest! WhilePlymouthhadsalesexpectationsof 20,000inthefirstyear,thecompanywas pleasantlysurprisedwhensalesreached 45,000units,thirdbehindtheGTOandthe Chevelleinoverallnationalsales.
•TheWarnerBrothersRoadRunnercartoon wasinfacttheinspirationforthecar’sname, andPlymouthpaiddearlyfortheprivilegeof usingthenameandlikeness--$50,000.What wouldaRoadRunnerbewithoutahornthat madea“meep-meep”sound?Plymouthpaid anadditional$10,000forthatlicense.

•Underthehood,theRoadRunnerhada383-ci V8,butofferedtheoptionofa426-ciHemiV8 foranadditional$714.Outofthe45,000cars sold,840buyersoptedfortheHemitoleave WileyCoyoteinthedust!


MUSCLECARS(continued):
•TheDodgeChargerwasintroducedin1966, withproductionofjust37,300units.With theroofslopingintothetrunk’stail,itwas thelargestfastbackmodelavailable,and wasnearlytwofeetlongerthanthe Mustang.Productiondecreasedin1967, withtotalproductionat15,788.Thepriceof the1969Chargerwasbetween$3,000and $4,000,dependingonoptions.Customers couldaddthesolid-stateAM/FMRadiofor $134.95,with$15.15addedforarear speaker.Theadditionofthe426Hemi engineboostedthepriceby$648.20. Onaveryregularbasis,whenIaskmypatients howtheyaredoing,someoneresponds“You wereright!Ilearnedformyselfhow______ affectsmyjoints.”Fillintheblank.Mostofthe timeit’ssugar:“Youwereright!Ihadacandy barandnowmyjointsareswollenandpainful!”
