•Thebearbecamethemascotofhisbrigade. WhentheyweremusteredouttoFrance, ColebournleftWinnieattheLondonZoo, intendingtotransferthebeartothe WinnipegZooafterthewar.ButWinnie becamesuchapopularattractioninLondon thatColebournerelinquishedher permanentlytotheircare.

•In1942,ayoungIranianboyrescueda Syrianbrownbearcubafteritsmotherwas shotbyhunters.Hetookittothetrainstation nearhim.AyoungPolishwomanboughtthe cubandspentthenextthreemonthsina refugeecamp,nursingthecubbackto health.
•Shethengavethegrowingbeartothe22nd ArtillerySupplyCompanystationednearby. TheynamedthebearWojtek,aPolishname meaning“happywarrior.”
•Thesoldiersdotedonthebear,teachinghim tricksandfeedinghimtreats.Hedrank coffeeeverymorningbutpreferredbeer. Theytriedtoteachhimtosmokecigarettes butheonlyatethem.Wojteklearnedto salute,engagedinwrestlingmatcheswith thesoldiers,andoftenmarchedalongside themenonhishindlegs.

Thesecratesnormallytookfourmentohaul. Forhisbraveryandserviceinbattle,Wojtek waspromotedtoCorporal.Ononeoccasion, thebearwassleepingintheammunition depotwhenathiefbrokeinlateatnight. Needlesstosay,thethiefreceivedthefright ofhislife,andnoammowasstolen.
•Attheendofthewar,Wojteckaccompanied the22ndCompanytoScotland,wherehe becameverypopularwiththetownfolk. Whenthe22nddemobilizedin1947,the bearwasdonatedtotheEdinburghZoo, wherehelivedinpamperedpeaceuntilhe diedin1963attheageof21.Bythattime, Wojteckweighed1,100lbs(500kg)and stood5’11”(1.8m)tallonhishindlegs.
•Rubhandswithlemonslicestogetridof onionorfishsmells.Afterward,youcanput thelemonslicesdownyourgarbagedisposal unitwithafewicecubestogetridofsmells there,too.

•AndrewThorntonwasanAmerican narcoticsofficerwiththeDEAwhoquithis jobwithlawenforcementinordertobecome asmuggler.In1985,hewasdeliveringa loadofcocainefromColombiainhisCessna plane.
•Duringthelate-nightflight,hebecame awarethathewasbeingfollowedbytwo governmentplaneswhohadobviouslybeen tippedofftohispayload.Thorntonputthe planeonauto-pilot,pushedalloftheillicit cargooutoftheplane,strappedona parachute,andjumped.
•Unfortunately,boththeparachuteandthe reservechutefailedtoopen,andThornton plummetedtohisdeathinthedrivewayofa retireeinKnoxville,TN.Hisunmanned planecrashed60milesawayinNorth Carolina.

Mostlyyouthinkofscammerswhostealas lowlifes,butit'snotalwaysthecase.Sometimes they'rewell-educatedprofessionalswhohavea lottolosewhenthey'recaught.
Takethecaseofthedoctorwhotookmoneythat wasmeanttogotothosewho'dsufferedsevere traumaticinjuries.
Thisdoctor,adecoratedNavycommander, conspiredwithotherstolietheirwaytoa$2 millionprofitinaninsuranceprogramthathelps servicememberswhoweretraumaticallyinjured whileonactiveduty.Theco-conspiratorswould coaxotherstocreatefakeorexaggeratedclaims forinjuriesinexchangeforaportionofthe proceeds.
Enterthedoctorwho,inexchangefora kickback,wouldverifythattheinjuriesand disabilitiesexistedandsignoffonthe applicationfortheclaim,sometimessayinghe'd actuallyseenthepersonmakingtheclaim.Orhe wouldprovidethemedicalrecordsofothersto thosewhoweresubmittingfakeclaims.
Theothernineco-conspiratorsincludedanurse (whohelpedtofalsifymedicalrecords)anda formerNavymechanic(whoactivelyrecruited othersintothescheme,wherehenettednearly $400,000).Theykeptthescamgoingforatleast threeyears.Thevariouschargesincludedfraud, wirefraudandmakingafalseandfraudulent claim.
Ofalltheco-conspirators,it'stheNavydoctor whodisappointedmethemost.Thiswasn'ta short-termscam;itwentonlongenoughthat onewonderswhetherinallthattimethedoctor thoughtabouthowhegottothatpoint.
Thisisthesamemanwho,servinginIraq, climbedontoaroofin2007tohelpatinyinfant whowasn'tbreathingproperly,evacuatedthe babyviahelicopterundersniperfire,andgot himintosurgeryinahospital.Thebabywas savedandbackhomeinaweek.
It'shardtoreconciletheimageofthatdoctor withhisparticipationinatheftscamthatonly nettedhim$180,000overthreeyears.Andnow he'spotentiallyfacing20yearsinprison.
