THECANADIANBEAR

•WhenWWIstarted,HarryColebournof Winnipeg,Canadavolunteered.Hewason hiswaytoreportfordutyin1914whenhe cameacrossamanwhohadayoungblack bearcubforsale.Themotherbearhaddied. Colebournboughtthecubfor$20($475 today)andsmuggledthecuballthewayto England.HenamedthecubWinnipeg,or Winnieforshort.

•Thebearbecamethemascotofhisbrigade. WhentheyweremusteredouttoFrance, ColebournleftWinnieattheLondonZoo, intendingtotransferthebeartothe WinnipegZooafterthewar.ButWinnie becamesuchapopularattractioninLondon thatColebournerelinquishedher permanentlytotheircare.

•Thegentlebearwasfondofthechildren whoflockedtothezootovisither.Oneof thosevisitorswasaboynamedChristopher RobinMilne.Christopher’sfatherboughta souvenirteddybearin1921.Christopher andhisWinnieteddybearbecame inseparable.WhenChristopher’sfather beganwritingstoriestoentertainhisson,the maincharacterwasabearcalledWinniethe Pooh.

THESOLDIERBEAR

•In1942,ayoungIranianboyrescueda Syrianbrownbearcubafteritsmotherwas shotbyhunters.Hetookittothetrainstation nearhim.AyoungPolishwomanboughtthe cubandspentthenextthreemonthsina refugeecamp,nursingthecubbackto health.

•Shethengavethegrowingbeartothe22nd ArtillerySupplyCompanystationednearby. TheynamedthebearWojtek,aPolishname meaning“happywarrior.”

•Thesoldiersdotedonthebear,teachinghim tricksandfeedinghimtreats.Hedrank coffeeeverymorningbutpreferredbeer. Theytriedtoteachhimtosmokecigarettes butheonlyatethem.Wojteklearnedto salute,engagedinwrestlingmatcheswith thesoldiers,andoftenmarchedalongside themenonhishindlegs.

•Thebearmovedwiththe22ndCompany throughoutIraq,andthentoSyria,Palestine, andEgypt.Butwhenthe22ndCompany wasreassignedtotheItalianfront,the Britishshipthatwastocarrythemrefusedto carrypetsormascots.SoWojtekwas officiallydraftedintothePolishArmyasa private.DuringthebrutalBattleofMonte Cassino,PrivateWojtekhelpedkeepthe gunsfiringbyhaulingboxesofammo,each containingfour25-pound(11kg)shells. Thesecratesnormallytookfourmentohaul. Forhisbraveryandserviceinbattle,Wojtek waspromotedtoCorporal.Ononeoccasion, thebearwassleepingintheammunition depotwhenathiefbrokeinlateatnight. Needlesstosay,thethiefreceivedthefright ofhislife,andnoammowasstolen.

•Attheendofthewar,Wojteckaccompanied the22ndCompanytoScotland,wherehe becameverypopularwiththetownfolk. Whenthe22nddemobilizedin1947,the bearwasdonatedtotheEdinburghZoo, wherehelivedinpamperedpeaceuntilhe diedin1963attheageof21.Bythattime, Wojteckweighed1,100lbs(500kg)and stood5’11”(1.8m)tallonhishindlegs.

•Rubhandswithlemonslicestogetridof onionorfishsmells.Afterward,youcanput thelemonslicesdownyourgarbagedisposal unitwithafewicecubestogetridofsmells there,too.

•In1986,apolarbearcubwassnatchedfrom hermotherinCanadaandsoldtoanEast Germancircus.NamedTosca,thebearwas acquiredbytheBerlinZooin1998.There shegavebirthtotwocubsin2006, abandoningthembothoutsideherden.

•Thecubs,blind,nakedandthesizeofguinea pigs,wererescuedbyzookeepers.One died,buttheotherhungon.Zookeeper ThomasDoerfleinbecamethecub’s surrogatemother,stayingwithhimround theclockfor150days.Itwasthefirstpolar bearbornattheBerlinZooin33years.His namewasKnut.

•Twiceaday,ThomasDoerfleinwouldput onshows,playingwiththecub,feeding him,andshowinghimofftoliveaudiences. “Knutmania”swepttheglobe.Thezoo’s revenuesfor2007were30%higherthanthe previousyear,makingitthemostsuccessful inthezoo’s168-yearhistory.TheBerlin Zooalreadyhadafullcomplementofpolar bearsandnormallywouldhavesentKnut offtosomeotherzoo,buttheywere unwillingtopartwiththeireconomicboon.

•Asayoungadult,Knutwasmovedintoan enclosurewithseveralfemalepolarbears, includinghismother.Inthewild,maleand femalepolarbearsavoideachother.Here, Knutcouldnotavoidtheotherbears,who bulliedhim.Knuttookuprepetitive behaviorssocommontostressedzoo animals,suchasrelentlesspacing.Inthe wild,Knutwouldhavetravelledupto60 milesadayorswum100milesatastretch insearchoffood.(cont)

THEBADLUCKBEAR

•AndrewThorntonwasanAmerican narcoticsofficerwiththeDEAwhoquithis jobwithlawenforcementinordertobecome asmuggler.In1985,hewasdeliveringa loadofcocainefromColombiainhisCessna plane.

•Duringthelate-nightflight,hebecame awarethathewasbeingfollowedbytwo governmentplaneswhohadobviouslybeen tippedofftohispayload.Thorntonputthe planeonauto-pilot,pushedalloftheillicit cargooutoftheplane,strappedona parachute,andjumped.

•Unfortunately,boththeparachuteandthe reservechutefailedtoopen,andThornton plummetedtohisdeathinthedrivewayofa retireeinKnoxville,TN.Hisunmanned planecrashed60milesawayinNorth Carolina.

•Thepolicebegansearchingforthecargo thathadbeendumped.Mediacoveredthe storyandencouragedcitizenstoturninany suspiciousduffelbagstheyfound.Allbut onewererecovered.

•Sureenough,thenowemptyduffelhad previouslybeenfullcocaine.Actingona suspicion,theyhadthedeadbearautopsied. Thechiefmedicalexaminerfromthe GeorgiaStateCrimeLabfoundthatthe bear’sstomachwaspackedtothebrimwith cocaine.Thebearhadeaten75lbs(34kg)of cocaine,thoughitwouldhavetakenonly3 or4gramstokillit.

•Thebear,knownlocallyas“thecocaine bear”andofficiallydubbed“Pablo Escobear”wasstuffed,passedaroundto variousowners,andisnowondisplayatthe KentuckyFunMallinLexington,Kentucky.

PastaisafavoritenationalfoodofItaly,where itistypicallycutintoavarietyofshapesand eatenwithasauce,inasouporincorporated intoabakeddish.Butit'snotjustafavoritein Italy!Kidseverywherelovepasta.Nowonder itregularlyappearsonourfamilytable. Mysteriously,though,whenthekidswere young,theyoftenclaimedtolovelinguinebut notspaghetti,orshellsbutnotelbows.Andno matterhowmanytimesItriedtoexplainthat it'sallthesamething,theyinsisted,"No!It tastesdifferent!"

Here'syourchancetoseeforyourselfwhen makingfreshpastawithkids.Theycancutthis doughintoavarietyofshapesrightbeforetheir eyes.Whenit'scooked,they'lldiscoverone thingiscertain:Eatingfreshpasta("pasta fresca")opensthetastebudstosomethingquite differentfromthestandarddrypastafroma package.

Andif,whileslurpingthepastaintotheir mouths,youhear,"Welikethesquigglyshapes better,"thenyou'llhaveyouranswer.Maybe someformsarejustalittlemorefun.

FRESHPASTA

•Makes2servings

Continuetostirintheflouruntilthedoughis stiff.Whenitistoofirmtomixwiththefork, kneaditwithyourhands.Incorporatejust enoughflourtomakeaball.(Youmaynotneed alloftheflour.)

Kneadthedoughforafewminutesuntilsmooth andpliable.Placethedoughonafloured surface,coverandletrestfor10minutes.

Tomakepastashapes:

Rollthedoughoutonaflouredboardintoa verythinrectangle.Thethinner,thebetter,asthe noodleswillplumpupwhencooked.Cut lengthwiseintonarrowstripswithapizzacutter. Ofcourse,youdon'thavetosticktostandard forms.Usingasmalltableknife,trydifferent "kid"shapeslikewigglylines,littletrianglesor stars.

Tocookpasta:

Boilthepastainsaltedwaterfor4-5minutes. Drainandservewithapastasauceandcheese. Ortossintoapotofsimmeringchickensoup andboiluntilcooked.

Richardcametoseemeforthesequelaeof stroke.Icontinuallytriedtoconvincehimto stopsmoking,tonoavail.Onedayhecamein andsaid“I’vebeenthinkingaboutquitting smoking.”Isaid“great!”Nothingmorewassaid astheconversationveeredelsewhere,soasI treatedhimfortheoriginalcondition,Ialso addedadditionalpointstostopsmoking.The nextweekhecameinandsaid“I’vehadthe weirdestweek!Ihavehadabsolutelynodesire tosmoke,andasaresulthaven’thadasingle cigarette!Ihavenoideawhy!”Iresponded, “Well,yousaidyouwantedtoquitsmoking,so Iaddedacupuncturepointsgearedtohelpyou quit.”Hejumpedupandsaid“Ididn’tsayI wantedtoquit!IsaidIwasthinkingaboutit!” Welaughed.Hequitbecausehehadnodesire, andhadnoknowledgeIhadtreatedhimforit! Thisdoctor,adecoratedNavycommander, conspiredwithotherstolietheirwaytoa$2 millionprofitinaninsuranceprogramthathelps servicememberswhoweretraumaticallyinjured whileonactiveduty.Theco-conspiratorswould coaxotherstocreatefakeorexaggeratedclaims forinjuriesinexchangeforaportionofthe proceeds.

Enterthedoctorwho,inexchangefora kickback,wouldverifythattheinjuriesand disabilitiesexistedandsignoffonthe applicationfortheclaim,sometimessayinghe'd actuallyseenthepersonmakingtheclaim.Orhe wouldprovidethemedicalrecordsofothersto thosewhoweresubmittingfakeclaims.

Theothernineco-conspiratorsincludedanurse (whohelpedtofalsifymedicalrecords)anda formerNavymechanic(whoactivelyrecruited othersintothescheme,wherehenettednearly $400,000).Theykeptthescamgoingforatleast threeyears.Thevariouschargesincludedfraud, wirefraudandmakingafalseandfraudulent claim.
