•In1912,Oklahoma-bornJimThorpebecame thefirstNativeAmericantowinOlympic goldmedals,victoriousinthepentathlon anddecathloninStockholm,Sweden.The KingofSwedencalledhimthegreatest athleteintheworld.Yetwithinmonths, Thorpe’smedalsandtitleswererevoked whenitwasdiscoveredhehadbeenpaidfor playingtwoseasonsofminorleague baseball,violatingtherulesofamateur status.Thefollowingyear,hesignedtoplay majorleaguebaseballwiththeNewYork Giants,thefirstoffourMLBteamsinhis six-yearcareer.Threeyearsintohisbaseball career,thisphenomenalathletebegan playingprofootballatthesametime. Thorpeplayedfootballfor13years,retiring atage41.HisnextmovewasaHollywood actingcareer,appearinginmorethan60 filmsfrom1931to1950.In1951,Thorpe’s lifewasimmortalizedinthemovie“Jim Thorpe–All-American,”withBurt Lancasterintheroleofthefamousathlete. Thirtyyearsafterhisdeathin1953,the InternationalOlympicCommitteerestored Thorpe’sOlympictitlesandmedals.In 1986,professionalathleteswereallowedto competeintheOlympics.

WHENPAINISAPAIN

Nobodylikespain,butwithoutthisimportant communicationtool,we’dbeinbigtrouble.Painis analertsystemlettingusknowthatsomethingis wrong.Whetheritiswarningusthatwearetouching ahotstoveandwillgetburned,oranorganthatisin troublesendingoutitsredflagtellingusthereis someinternalthreatgoingonthatneedsattention, we’dbestheedthewarning.Butwhenitis unrelenting,itcanbeapaintohavepainbecauseit inhibitsusinourlife.

Thereareasmanycausesforpainasthereareways torespondtoit.Somecantolerategrandlevelsof painandbeabletopushthroughit,whilesomeone elseisincapacitatedbyit.Therearealsodifferent classificationsofpain.

Firstisacuteorchronic.Acuteissuddenonsetshort-livedorcanbethebeginningofchronicpain. It’susuallytheresultoftissuedamagesuchas fracture,tornligamentorstrainedmuscle.Itcanalso meanorgandamage.Cancer,ulcers,irritablebowel, etc.areexamplesoforgandamage.Chronicmeans thatyou’vehadpainforawhile–itislonglasting.It isusuallyassociatedwithadiseasesuchasarthritis, auto-immunedisorders,fibromyalgiaorunresolved tissuedamage.

Painisgenerallyassociatedwithinflammation.Like painitself,inflammationisimportantasitisanormal responseofthebody’sandisessentialtohealing.
