TIDBITS® PUTTS ALONG WITH MODEL T’S

by Kathy Wolfe Tidbits hits the road this week to celebrate Model T Day on October 1. Drive along and learn the facts about this early automobile. •Many believe that Henry Ford was the inventor of the automobile, but that’s a misconception. The first modern cars were built in Germany in 1885 by Karl Benz. The first American gasoline-powered cars were introduced by the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in 1893, invented by brothers Charles and Frank Duryea. • Henry Ford had the mind of an inventor and was just 15 in 1878, the year he built his first steam engine. He was 28 when he went to work for Thomas Edison at the Edison Illuminating Company, and was a chief engineer within two years. In his spare time, he experimented with a gasoline engine, and by the end of 1893, he had finished an engine that ran for 30 seconds. • In 1896, Ford built his first gasoline-powered vehicle, the Quadricycle. After two failed automobile company ventures, he founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903. • The Model A was the company’s first car, a bright red, 2-seater runabout that went into production in 1903. With a price tag of $800, 1,750 cars were made in 1903 and 1904 in the Detroit factory. It was replaced by the Model C in 1904.

TIDBITS of Kootenai County, Idaho Issue #40 Sept 30th MODEL T’S (continued): • With a vision to make travel available affordable to the middle class, Ford sought to supply an affordable car for ordinary people. The result was the Model T, introduced on October 1, 1908, with a price tag of $850. Ford considered the price a little high, and made it his goal to lower the price. • The first model was a touring car, but within just a few months, several other body styles were introduced, including a 2-passenger coupe, 3-passenger roadster, 2-passenger open runabout, and a 6-passenger town car. Eventually, the line expanded to nine designs. • The designers of the original Model T were Childe Harold Wills, Joseph Galamb, and Eugene Farkas. The automobile was manufactured from vanadium alloy steel, much stronger than any steel available, yet lightweight. It contained an enclosed four-cylinder engine and transmission. A crank was used to start the engine. Mounted on the side of the driver’s seat were three foot pedals and a lever that controlled the rear-wheel drive vehicle. The throttle was controlled with a lever on the steering wheel, which was on the left side. The Model T was the first Ford with all of its parts built by the company itself. • The top speed of the first Model T was 45 mph (72.4 km/hr), and it achieved gas mileage of 13 to 21 miles (21 to 34 km) per gallon (0.8 Brit gal). Its higher ground clearance made it especially desirable to rural drivers who drove on very poor roads. • Although marketed as a three-speed auto, one of those was the reverse. The Model T could run on gasoline, kerosene, or ethanol.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson --* “Need brown sugar for a recipe and suddenly realize you’re out? Save a trip to the grocery store by adding molasses to white sugar. No molasses? Use maple syrup in a pinch.” -- W.S. in Florida * Keep it clean in the laundry room with this quick cleanup tip: When you do a load of towels or rags, use one of them to wipe down the washer and dryer -- including a quick scrub of the lint trap -- before tossing the rag in the wash. * “The last time I went through my plastic containers to remove the ones without lids and the lids that have no container, I thought ‘How does this even happen?’ So, when I got ready to put the ‘keep’ pile back, I decided that I would store them with their lids attached. It has worked well. Even though it takes up a little more space, they are all there, and no lid or container has gone missing.” -- M.M. in Ohio * To keep hard floors in good shape, get a microfiber mop that is strictly for dust mopping. Treat it with an appropriate floor-care agent, and make sure that you toss the mop head in the wash regularly. Never use fabric softener when washing or drying microfiber cleaning cloths. * Store an extra set of sheets and an additional blanket under the bed in a laundry basket for easy accessibility. * When making a cream pie filling or a custard, you may substitute two egg yolks for each egg. TIDBITS of Kootenai County, Idaho Issue #40 Sept 30th 2019 MODEL T’S (continued): • The first Model T’s were offered in gray, green, blue, and red. In 1914, in an attempt to lower the price of the car, Henry Ford changed the color of all Model T’s to black. Black paint was the most durable and dried the fastest, speeding up production and reducing costs. This resulted in Ford’s most famous quote, “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants – so long as it’s black!” • Automobiles became more affordable when the assembly line was introduced. Prior to that, vehicles were assembled one at a time, from beginning to end. In 1901, Ransom E. Olds created the first stationary assembly line, increasing production by four times, from 425 cars in 1901 to 2,500 in 1902. The assembly line broke the process down into smaller tasks, reducing production time, leading to cost reduction. However, it was Henry Ford’s invention of the first moving assembly line in 1913 that led to mass-production. • Ford’s moving assembly line was inspired by Chicago meatpacking plants that utilized a conveyor belt system during production. In 1913, Ford built a new 60-acre factory in Highland Park, Michigan, the first to assemble autos on his new invention. The factory was divided into sectors, with each area assembling a single part of the Model T, with the number of sections eventually reaching 500. Within six months of the plant’s opening, the improved efficiency had cut the manufacturing time of a Model T engine from 9 hrs., 54 minutes to 5 hrs., 56 minutes. Production time of each automobile decreased from 728 minutes to 93. Ford met his goal of making cars available to the common man by reducing the price of the Model T from $850 in 1908 to $700 in 1910 to $350 in 1917.

COUCH THEATER -- DVD PREVIEWS

PHOTO: Jessie Buckley in “Wild Rose” Photo Credit: NEON

“Wild Rose” (R) -- It’s not hard to like RoseLynn (Jessie Buckley), a working-class girl in Glasgow, Scotland, with big dreams of being a country music singer in Nashville. Boy, does she have the pipes for it, too, but the path to stardom requires more than just “three chords and the truth.” For one, she’s just been released from jail and must take a job cleaning houses to satisfy her work requirement. She’s also a single mom whose own disapproving mother (Julie Walters) has been raising her two kids. Buckley plays Rose-Lynn perfectly, as cheerful and magnetic, both captivating onstage and an explosive firecracker with a microfuse. Either way, her enthusiasm is infectious. Plus, the movie takes some refreshing turns -- just when you think you know where the story is going, you don’t. “Above the Shadows” (NR) -- Holly (Olivia Thirlby) was once a real person, but she faded into oblivion, becoming invisible for all practical purposes. No one can see her, but she exists. Shayne Blackwell (Alan Ritchson), an MMA fighter who fell from grace, is the only person who can see Holly. In order to become

visible again, she uses her shadowy talents to lift Shayne back to the lofty heights from which he fell, complete with career and the girl (Megan Fox). But as the pair help each other gain what they had lost, victory and visibility begin to take on new meanings. The movie itself is not so incredible as the concept: It’s a supernatural, sport-specific romance. That alone rates a spot in the Friday-night rotation. “Dark Phoenix” (PG-13) -- The last in the XMen series, “Dark Phoenix” is the saga of one Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), telekinetic and psychic known as Phoenix, whose powers intensify exponentially after she’s exposed to a celestial flare. As Phoenix tries to control the malevolent force inside her, a shapeshifting alien named Vuk (Jessica Chastain) shows up in an attempt to subvert her newfound powers. Phoenix turns on her fellow X-Men as she wrestles against Vuk’s influence and the truth of what she is becoming, or perhaps has been all along: The Dark Phoenix. The general consensus in my row of the theater is that it was a disappointing waste of what could have been a killer story. I agree, and with lackluster performances and nothing particularly compelling onscreen, I can safely advise you to pass. “Bodied” (R) -- Part of the new YouTube Premium content, “Bodied” stars Calum Worthy as Adam, a graduate student at a very progressive college who, in the course of researching his thesis, becomes embroiled in a battle rap -- and impresses. His success leads to greater opportunities, but at the cost of his mainstream identity. The rap battles are impressive -- the right mix of vulgar and trashy meets clever wit.

A REASON FOR ALL SYMPTOMS Most people want to be well and stay well. But getting well is more than taking a medication to suppress a symptom. It is a state of wellbeing, of having the energy to do the fun things in life, and of not being restricted by health challenges. To be well is to be free of diseases, to have a balanced emotional state, and to have the option to live life to its fullest. Acupuncture, herbal medicine and nutrition, designed to restore function and not just manage disease are necessary to resolving health challenges. To be well, the number one question you should be asking when discussing your symptoms is why. Why do I have heartburn (and don’t be content with an answer such as “because there is too much stomach acid”, ask “why there’s too much acid?”!). “Why is my thyroid not functioning”, “why am I fatigued”, “why can’t I sleep”, “why am I taking so long to heal?” Why, Why, Why! Symptoms are the body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Symptoms don’t just happen for no reason.

You don’t just one day have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or colitis. The body doesn’t just say “I have nothing else to do today, let’s just see what happens if I raise the blood pressure?” There is a reason for ALL symptoms, many times multiple reasons. Cholesterol, for example is the healing serum of the body. If it’s elevated, then we have to ask “why”? Is the body trying to heal something?” or, “is the body short of hormones and needs the cholesterol to make more hormones?” Why would the body create a symptom that has a potential of harming itself? Maybe the remedy is less risky than the condition it’s trying to help. If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired or in pain, consider seeing a natural healthcare practitioner who can help decipher the why’s so that you are not just medically managed, but WELL. At Vital Health we help people find clarity regarding the root causes of their health challenges and provide step-by-step guidance on what to do, and when to do it, in order to restore health. We look forward to helping you!

Reducing the Rate of Military Suicides In a joint venture to reduce suicides, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense and the Vet Centers have hooked up to provide counseling and outreach to the National Guard on drill weekends and during training. In 2017, the National Guard had the highest rate of suicide of all the military. Now, however, the rate of National Guard members using the Vet Centers has risen 38%, and the suicide rate has fallen to its the lowest level in five years. It’s thought that the increased use of the Vet Center services could be the reason. Meanwhile, the Defense Suicide Prevention Office’s most recent report saw 2018 deaths-bysuicide numbers that were mostly higher than the year before: Air Force 60, Army 139, Marine Corps 58, Navy 68, Reserves 216 and National Guard 135. As the VA continues to try to understand the reasons for veteran suicides, it’s looking at limited access to health care and isolation. Up until 2016, Vermont had the nation’s highest rate of veteran suicide. By this year, it was reported in Congress that Montana had the highest rate. First thoughts point to rural living and cold weather, yet in California, sunny and warm San Diego has the highest rate for that state. If you think you might be in trouble, or if you know a veteran who is, call the Veterans Crisis Hotline 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255 or go online to www.veteranscrisisline.net. You also can send a text to 838255. Besides the 24/7 hotline, National Guard and Reservists are eligible to use the services of the Vet Centers (there are 300) and Mobile Vet Centers (there are 80). To find out more about what the Vet Centers do, or to find one in your area, go online to www.vetcenter.va.gov. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Does My Dog Have Arthritis? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My black Lab, “Gordon,” is almost 12 years old. He has always been energetic, but lately on our walks he seems to get tired easily, slows down his walk, and whines from time to time. His hind legs seem to be stiff and he has a harder time laying down in his pet bed. Do you think he has arthritis? Will it affect his life? -- Jeff in Silver Spring, Maryland DEAR JEFF: He does seem to be showing symptoms of arthritis. Jot down everything you see Gordon doing that seems different or “off,” and take those notes and your dog to the veterinarian. The vet can evaluate Gordon for arthritis -- an inflammation of the joints seen frequently in older pets -- and rule out any other underlying conditions. If Gordon has arthritis, there are lots of medicines and therapies available to alleviate his pain -- many of which are the same treatments used for humans, albeit in smaller doses. There’s no cure for the condition, but he still has years of life ahead and will be close to his old self with treatment. In addition to medication, arthritis symptoms can be eased by using heating pads or cold packs. Regular exercise keeps blood flowing to the joints and eases discomfort. And it can keep Gordon’s weight down, which will ease the stress on his joints. Many owners have had good results by changing their pet’s diet. Dog foods formulated for senior pets can keep his nutrition on point. Allergenfree dog foods may yield good results, too. Try working with his vet to tweak Gordon’s diet a bit and see if there’s any improvement. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q&A with Susan Ashley, MD Vitamin C and Heart Disease Heart disease remains the number one cause of death in the western world, and we have not been successful at lowering the incidence. Factors related to heart disease that are well known include smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, increased inflammation, high LDL and a family history of early heart disease. High cholesterol is only occasionally a factor, as 1/3rd of heart attacks occur with a high cholesterol, 1/3rd with normal levels, and 1/3rd in patients with low cholesterol. Another factor that is overlooked is something called Lp(a) - a glycoprotein that accumulates in human plaque. Lp(a) levels are mainly determined by genetics and are not lowered by cholesterol meds. Niacin, L-carnitine and CoQ10 can lower Lp(a). Measuring levels of Lp(a) is a routine part of a cardiac evaluation in Europe, and should be measured in everyone over age 50. The higher your Lp(a), the higher your risk of heart disease - a hidden risk factor for 1.4 billion persons worldwide.

www.tidbitscda.com

There is a theory of atherosclerosis that links vitamin C in the treatment of Lp(a). 40 million years ago, humans lost the ability to manufacture vitamin C from glucose, and as a result we are totally dependent on nutritional intake of C. During this same time, humans became one of the few species to manufacture Lp(a). A theory has been promoted by Dr Linus Pauling taht heart disease is a combination of a deficiency of vitamin C from poor dietary intake, resulting in weakened arterial walls, and the of Lp(a) tendency to travel and bind to weakened artery walls, bringing with it LDL cholesterol and contributing to plaque development. There is a definite link between vitamin C and vascular integrity. Often people that bruise easily have a deficiency in vitamin C and/or vitamin A. So what do we do? Have your doctor measure inflammatory markers, and include Lp(a) with your lipid panel. Increase vitamin C in the diet - eat plenty of citrus, berries, other fruits and fresh vegetables. Avoid fruit juice as this is far too high in sugar. If you do supplement with C, take episomal vitamin C - much better absorbed than just ascorbic acid, the most common form of C that is sold. If you take too much vitamin C it will cause diarrhea. For a big boost in the C levels, we will infuse vitamin C IV - can give 50,000 to 100,000 mg that way, with no intestinal side effects such as diarrhea. This can be especially helpful in anyone with plaque build-up, and the beginning of a cold or flu.

Dr Ashley is board certified in Family Medicine and in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. She provides a mix of traditional with alternative medicine and specializes in bio-identical hormones for both men and women.

Melvin (“Mel”) E. Wach Jr. of Coeur d’Alene, ID (formerly of Pittsburgh, PA) died On Friday the 13th after a long battle with an Agent Orange related neurological disorder. Mel proudly served our country in Vietnam with the US Army where he was awarded four (4) Medals of Honor including the Bronze Service Star for Combat and the National Defense Service Medal. After returning home from Vietnam, Mel entered the financial industry and was a Sr. Vice President with a national mortgage company before branching out to become a Partner of Your Equity Source (YES Mortgage). Mel was one of the few men in his unit who made it back from Vietnam and these experiences led him to become an advocate for Veterans, both through his business and his charitable contributions. Mel never wanted to take credit so most of this work was done anonymously. He said he owed it to his ‘brothers and sisters’ who were in need. Mel is survived by his wife, Sandra Wach of Coeur d’Alene, and his family in Pittsburgh: Eric Wach (Son), Kevin Wach (Son), Zachary Wach (Grandson), McKenzee Wach (Granddaughter), Dolores “Sissy” Wach (Sister), Rita Scanio (Sister), Carole & Chuck McConville (Sister and Brother-in-Law) and his beloved pets: Boris & Natasha (the crazy Maine Coons) and baby Moxie. Mel will be transferred from Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene to The Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Arlington is the home of The Vietnam Wall which pays tribute to the 58,320 Veterans who bravely lost their lives while serving our county and the Arlington National Cemetery which is our Nation’s most hallowed ground consisting of over 624 acres where over 400,000 men and women who have sacrificed for our Country reside. The family has asked that donations be made to Newby-gennings of North Idaho (a non-profit which provides vital services to Veterans and their families) in lieu flowers. A special thank you is extended to all of the wonderful people at Hospice of North Idaho who provided care and compassion during his final days.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An upcoming trip could create some problems with your schedule unless you tie up as many loose ends as possible before you head out the door. Ask a friend or colleague to help you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Being eager to start a new project is fine. However, moving ahead without knowing what actually will be expected of you could cause a problem down the line. Ask some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting through some recent challenges in good shape might give you a false sense of security. Don’t relax your guard. You need to be prepared for what else could happen. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still advised, even though you think you’re as prepared as you need to be. Keep in mind that change is in your aspect, and you should expect the unexpected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s gift of persuasion helps you get your points across, even to some of your most negative naysayers. An old friend might seek you out for some advice. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Being sure of your convictions is fine. But leave some room for dissenting opinions. You might learn something that could help you avoid a possible problem later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting good legal advice on what your rights actually are is the first step toward resolving that pesky problem so that it doesn’t re-emerge at a later date. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Longtime relationships work well this week, whether they’re personal or professional. It’s a good time to invite new friends and colleagues into your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week to do the research that will help you uncover those irrefutable facts that can back you up on your new venture when you most need it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Change is an important factor in your aspect this week and could affect something you might have thought was immune to any sort of adjustment or “alteration.” AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Being asked to share someone’s deeply personal confidence might be flattering, but accepting could be unwise. Decline gracefully but firmly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) As wise as you are, you could still be misled by someone who seems to be sincere but might not be. Take more time to assess the situation before making any commitments.

BORN THIS WEEK:

You like to face challenges that others might try to avoid, and by so doing, you set an example of courage for all. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

There aren’t too many people who are unfamiliar with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but how much do you know about the author of the famous book? Tidbits hits the highlights of this creative genius this week. • The name of Lewis Carroll was a pseudonym for Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, one of 11 children of a Church of England cleric. Carroll was tutored as a child by his father, but sent to boarding school at age 12. He was a sickly child, suffering a fever that left him deaf in one ear, followed by severe whooping cough. He grew to nearly six feet tall (1.83 m), but his body was considered asymmetric, that is, one shoulder was higher than the other, his eyes were not at the same level, and his smile was somewhat lop-sided. • As a child, Carroll enjoyed entertaining his siblings with games and stories, even though he lived with a pronounced stammer his entire life. But it was the study of mathematics that he pursued at Christ Church, Oxford, earning a first-class degree in the subject, and being appointed a lecturer at the university one year after graduation. • This distinguished scholar worked in geometry, linear and matrix algebra, and mathematical logic, writing 12 books under his birth name. With his mathematical and logical personality, he was a very organized, precise, and punctual man who made lists of everything in his life, including logging all of his menu plans in his diary. Thirteen volumes of his diaries have been preserved. • Carroll was also a prolific letter-writer and kept a register of all the letters he composed from age 29 until his death at 65. The 24-volume index logged 98,721 letters.

TIDBITS of Kootenai County, Idaho Issue #40 Sept 30th 2019 LEWIS CARROLL (continued): • Growing up in a home of 11 children, Carroll loved the companionship of young people, and when on a train journey, he carried games and puzzles with him to entertain children who might happen to be on a trip. He was an avid game player, including croquet, backgammon, billiards, and chess. He devised card tricks and math and word puzzles, including the forerunner of the game we know as Scrabble. He wrote poetry, attended the theater and opera, was a deacon in the Church of England, and somehow found the time to open a photography studio, creating some 3,000 photographs. • In addition to his many pastimes, Carroll was an inventor, devising a writing tablet called the nyctograph that enabled him to write in the dark, for those times when he awoke with an idea he wanted to record without leaving his bed. He also invented a double-sided adhesive strip for mounting things in books. All the while, he continued teaching his classes at Oxford. • While in his 20s, he met the Liddell family, and grew especially fond of their daughter Alice, and, although Carroll denied it for many years, he based his adventures of Alice upon his young friend. • At age 33, Carroll published Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which was met with overwhelming success. It was the story of the young girl who fell through a rabbit hole into a whimsical world filled with imaginary creatures, many based on a deck of cards. As his fame spread around the world, his life was disrupted with fan mail and a bit of unwanted attention. Although Alice was one of the most popular books in the world, none of Carroll’s subsequent works reached the same level of esteem.

Q: I usually don’t watch “American Horror Story.” It’s way too dark and gory for me, but I have to admit I’m intrigued by the ad campaign for the new season. It looks like the horror movies I watched in the ‘80s, like “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween.” -Ð C.P. A: The ninth season of “American Horror Story” just premiered on the FX channel and is titled “AHS: 1984.” It is indeed set in the ‘80s and takes place at a summer camp. The trailer showed a masked, knife-wielding slasher hitching a ride on the undercarriage of a truck carrying teens on their way to camp. I’m pretty sure you can figure out what happens next. This installment features “AHS” regulars Emma Roberts, Leslie Grossman, and Billie Lourd, but the most surprising bit of casting is Olympic silver medalist-turned-actor Gus Kenworthy. This is his sixth acting role since competing in the Winter Games in 2018. Q: I heard that Chris March from “Project Runway” died. I lost interest in the show after a few seasons, but he was one of my favorite designers to compete. Did he achieve any success as a designer after the reality series ended? -- J.F. A: You might not have heard, but Chris March suffered a terrible fall in 2017 and wasn’t discovered for several days. He had sustained a head injury, was put into a medically induced coma and awoke to find he was paralyzed in several limbs. His death this year at the age of 56 was the result of a heart attack.

Page 17

PHOTO: Emma Roberts in “American Horror Story” Photo credit: FX

Before such a tragic ending, March found success as a designer. While he didn’t win his season of “Project Runway,” he went on to design for several big stars like Beyonce and Chrissy Teigen. He even designed the gown that Meryl Streep wore to the Oscars in 2010. He will be greatly missed. *** Q: Is it true they’re making another “Dark Shadows” movie? Will Johnny Depp be in it again? -- G.M. A: “Dark Shadows” was a daytime TV soap opera with a gothic theme that aired 50 years ago and starred Jonathan Frid as a vampire named Barnabas Collins. A primetime version aired in 1991 starring Ben Cross in the same role, and then a motion picture version starring Depp was in theaters in 2012. While there are no plans for a sequel to the film, the CW network recently announced that a TV series is in the works titled “Dark Shadows: Reincarnation.” Mark B. Perry (“Revenge”) is writing the pilot. According to Deadline.com, Perry used to race home from school each day to watch the original “Dark Shadows.” He’s also a huge “Star Trek” fan and plans to treat “Dark Shadows: Reincarnation” with “the same reverence given to ‘Star Trek,’ while making the show accessible for audiences who aren’t familiar with the macabre world of the Collinses.” Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@gmail.com, or c/o KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

THE MAD HATTER October 6th has been deemed Mad Hatter Day, named for a famous character in Lewis Carroll’s timeless Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Tidbits celebrates this observance with some interesting info on this fantasy figure. • Lewis Carroll introduced the Mad Hatter in his 1865 novel, but oddly enough, although readers seem to always refer to the character as the Mad Hatter, Carroll never refers to him as that, but merely as the Hatter. However, he did name Chapter 7 of the book “A Mad Tea Party,” in which the two party hosts, the Hatter and the March Hare, are called “both mad” by the Cheshire Cat. • The term “mad as a hatter” came along much earlier than Carroll’s novel. During the 19th century, hat-making was a leading trade in Carroll’s community. Mercury was used in their manufacturing process, and hat-makers frequently suffered from mercury poisoning, and exhibited slurred speech, memory loss, confusion, and tremors, with many dying young as a result, giving way to the phrase “mad as a hatter.” • Speculation is that Lewis Carroll modeled the Mad Hatter after a peculiar and eccentric British furniture dealer from Oxford named Theophilus Carter. Carter came to be known as the Mad Hatter when he stood in the doorway of his shop, always wearing a top hat. The illustrator of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was Sir John Tenniel, a well-known political cartoonist and illustrator. He is said to have traveled to Oxford to capture Carter’s image in his sketches for the book. • Tenniel drew the Hatter adorned with a large top hat with a hatband reading “In this style 10/6,” which referred to the hat’s price tag. This signified the amount in British money of ten shillings and six pence, which led to choosing the date and month to celebrate Mad Hatter Day, October 6.

TIDBITS of Kootenai County, Idaho Issue #40 Sept 30th 2019 THE MAD HATTER (continued): • In Chapter 7 of the novel, the Mad Hatter recited a parody of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” entitled “Twinkle,Ttwinkle, Little Bat,” which goes on to say, “How I wonder what you’re at! Up above the world you fly, Like a tea tray in the sky.” He switches places at the tea table numerous times, recites nonsense, and asks riddles with no answer. • The Hatter appeared briefly in the Alice sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, which was published in 1871. • The Mad Hatter became a comic book character in 1948, when he made his debut in a Batman comic as the villain Jervis Tetch, who keeps various gadgets stored in his hat, mindcontrolling devices that enable him to manipulate his victims. • In 1951, Walt Disney released his animated Alice feature, with the Hatter voiced by Ed Wynn. His large top hat contains cake and other smaller hats. In 2010, Tim Burton debuted his version of the classic tale, casting Johnny Depp in the role of the Hatter, with the name Tarrant Hightopp. • Tom Petty suited up as the Mad Hatter in a giant crimson hat, black bowtie, and rectangular sunglasses in his 1985 music video “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” a video described as “psychedelic strangeness.” • The Hatter has been a character in numerous video games, musicals, and television series.

Elders often say they want to stay in their own homes.

By Matilda Charles

You Need a Second Pneumonia Vaccine Have you had your second pneumonia shot? Some of us either don’t know the vaccine comes in two parts, or we forget to ask for it a year later when we need the second dose. The two vaccines are called PCV13 (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) and PPSV23 (pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The numbers refer to how many strains of bacteria each one covers. We generally call it pneumonia, but its official name is pneumococcal disease, and it can be serious. On the mild end of the spectrum, it might cause only a sore throat or sinus infection. On the other hand, besides pneumonia, the disease can cause infections of the blood, brain and spinal cord. The pneumonia vaccine is one you might want to get at your doctor’s office, even if it’s handier to go to the local pharmacy. The reason is that there are certain warnings about whether you should or shouldn’t have one or the other of the two shots. Your doctor will be able to check your medical records to be sure the vaccine is right for you. Pneumonia is transmitted by direct contact through mucous or saliva, and others can pass it to you without even knowing they have it. Be sure to wash your hands frequently! Medicare Part B will cover the cost of these vaccines if you get them a year apart. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

They've lived there for decades and see no reason to move. However, many times their neighborhoods have changed so much that they are no longer safe. Even if the neighborhoods are safe, many of the old neighbors have died or moved away, and the elders become isolated. Many times a move to assisted living can give elders a new lease on life. Older homes that seniors hang onto often have bathrooms and bedrooms on a second floor. I've seen seniors sleep on the living room couch because they don't want to make the trip up the stairs to go to bed. This is often unhealthy for their bodies, and if the only bathroom is up a long flight of stairs, they still must climb. Stairs are not only an obstacle because of the energy it takes to climb them, they present a real hazard when it comes to falls. Change can be hard for anyone and elders are often reluctant to change the way things have always been. Decades of their lives may be tied to the home they live in, and the idea of moving away is terrifying, so they insist what they have is what they want. But the old home isn't necessarily the best place for them. Family members or caregivers need to move slowly and with compassion when they try to convince an elder to move from the family home. However, once the adjustment is made, many elders are thrilled with the change. Why? Here are five reasons. Safety. Assisted living centers are set up to provide a safe, comfortable environment for elders… Meals. Appetites can diminish as we age, plus many people don't enjoy eating alone… In assisted living, meals are provided and they often offer many choices of food. But the biggest plus may be that people have company for their meals… Transportation. …they can generally arrange transportation for seniors who need to get to clinic appointments… Less worry. …In assisted living, they don't have to worry about repair responsibilities. If something doesn't work properly, they or a loved one can alert the administration and the problem should be fixed… Socialization. Socialization is perhaps the most important reason why many people who insist that they will hate assisted living end up thriving… In assisted living, even those who swore they'd hate it often find, once they adjust, that they again enjoy the company of peers. They play cards, listen to music, exercise, have snacks, go to community events and have people come in to entertain them… (by Carol Bradley Bursack, Editor-in-Chief, “Elder Care Link”.)

Make Colorful Crayon Leaf Rubbings

Fall outdoor rituals are many during these lush months of color and cooler temps. Maybe your family already has established an annual tradition of taking a mini day vacation, like heading to a favorite orchard for a Saturday of apple picking and cider tasting, touring pumpkin farms, walking through a corn maze or hiking in the woods to get exercise, explore and observe wildlife and brilliant foliage. You can celebrate the season and create new traditions right at your closest park or in your neighborhood, too. If the fall air beckons your family to get outside for a bike ride or a weekend walk, go for it. Observe the changing images around you, including the colorful leaves drifting and swirling in the breeze. Like the neighborhood boy I overheard saying to his dad as they collected different specimens on their walking route home from the library: “It’s a leaf-y time of year!” I agree. I can’t resist collecting, preserving, pressing, decorating and crafting with leaves from day trips away from home and walks in my neighborhood. There are so many possibilities -- including one of the simplest of crafts for any age: making crayon leaf rubbings on paper. Once you collect leaves, grab your supplies, get to rubbing and uncover “Xray” type designs you’ve never noticed before, both graceful and playful.

LEAF RUBBINGS Here’s the stuff you’ll need: -- fresh leaves collected from the ground -- sturdy paper -- a variety of crayons in different colors -- colored pencils (optional) Here’s the fun: 1. Lay a leaf on a smooth, clean work surface. Place paper over it and hold it down firmly so that it won’t move. 2. Take a crayon and rub it over the paper until the shape of the entire leaf is revealed. Discover the outline and skeleton of the leaf as the veins of the leaf protrude. 3. If you use a colored pencil, hold it at a slight angle, being careful not to press too hard so that it doesn’t go through the paper. 4. Make several different rubbings on one sheet. Vary with contrasting colors, if you wish. You might want to identify leaves by writing the name of their tree by each one. 5. Frame the rubbings, or use for book covers, gift wrap, gift tags and notecards. TIP: Rub leaves from your flower and vegetable garden, too. When the design of a small begonia leaf is revealed, your young child might say in amazement: “It looks like a seashell!” Parsley can look dainty and romantic, but what about arugula and kale?
