•Adogsitterwascaringforafriend’sdog whenthedogwenttostandatthefrontdoor, remainingthereforthreehours.Thedog sitterthoughtthedogneededtorelieve himself,butthatwasn’tthecase.Three hourslater,thedog’sownershowedup–twodaysbeforehewasduetoreturnhome. “Ihadnoideatheownerwouldreturnearly, andIhavenoideahowthedogknewthat,” thedogsitterremarked.

•DuringWWII,onedoghadanuncanny abilitytoknowwhenhismaster,apilot,was returningtotheairfield.Thedogwouldgo outassoonashesensedthecorrectplane wasreturning.Thepilot’scomradesthought thedogwasreactingtotheparticularwhine ofthespecificplanethathismaster customarilyflew.Butthenoneday,thepilot leftinthemorningflyinghisusualplane,but returnedthatafternoon–fromtheopposite direction–inadifferentplane.Theentire companywasflabbergastedwhenthedog completelyignoredtheusualplane,and wentoutinsteadtogreethismasterwhenhe steppedoutofthesecond“wrong”plane.

•Awomanwasoutforarambleinthe countrywithherGermanshepherd.After theyhadwalkedagoodways,thedogsat downandrefusedtogoanyfurther.He couldnotbedraggedorcajoledtocontinue onthewalk.Discouraged,thewoman turnedtowardshomewiththedogeagerly leadingtheway.Justthenahorrendous stormquicklymovedin.Justasthey reachedthesafetyofthedoorstep,a torrentialrainfallwithdangeroushailstorms peltedthearea.Shewasgladthatthedog hadsensedtheapproachingstormandhad thesensetowarnherintime.

•Dogssometimesalsohaveastrongreaction topeopletheydon’tlike.Inoneinstance,a guyhadafriendwhodislikeddogs intensely,butcamebytovisithimandhis Germanshepherdatregularintervals.On oneoccasion,thedogstoodupatthedoor andgrowledintenselytenminutesbeforethe dog-hatingfriendarrived.Fromthatpoint forward,theGermanshepherdhadtobeshut inthegaragewheneverthefriendcameby, andthedogalwaysknewtenorfifteen minutespriortohisarrival.
•Avetnotedthathismother-in-law’sdogwas alwaysfriendlytohimwheneverhestopped byonasocialvisittohismother-in-law’s home.Butwheneverhevisitedinhis capacityataveterinarian,thedogwentand hid.Therewasnowaythedogcouldhave knownthedifference,andthevetevenkept hisdoctorbagoutofsight,butthedog alwaysknewwhenhewasondutyandwhen hewasnot.
Adogwhowasroutinelytakenintothe groomer’sonceeverysixweeksorsowould constantlyintuittheduedate,hidingunder thebeduntilthethreathadpassed.“We neverfiguredouthowsheknewwhichday andwhichhour,”saidtheowners.

WHENFOODISADDICTING
Notsurprisingly,foodaddictionsareinthetop5of addictionsandaddictivebehaviors.Whyisfoodso addicting?Therearemanytheories,mostlyhaving nothingtodowithwillpower.
Onetheorydiscussesthesensationsofthetongue andhowthataffectsthebrain.Weareallfamiliar withtheold“sweet,sour,bitter,andsalty”sensations ofthetongue.Whilenice,whataffectsusmoreisthe sensesof“Umami”andKokumi”.Umamiisthe deliciousnessofafood.Itissavory,ripe,meaty,and enhancesthe4basicflavors.Meat,dairyproducts, veggies,fish,oystersandshitakemushroomsgive thatextraUmamiwecrave.
Kokumi(or“koku”)istherich,hearty, “mouthfulness”,thickness,complexity,depthof flavorwithalongfinishthatsosatisfiesus.This comesfromfoodswithfatandcalciumcombined, suchasbutter,cheese,milk,onions,garlicscallops andfishsauces.
Onetheoryholdsthataswehaveeliminatedfrom ourdiet,wealsoeliminatedumamiandkokumi. Thishasresultedinusreachingforotherfoodstotry tosatiatethebrain.Sugar/carbohydrates,artificial sweetenersandproductswithflavorenhancerssuch asmonosodiumglutamate.Whileumamiand kokumibothenhancethebasicsweet,salt,bitter, sour,withoutfat,thedepthofflavorisn’tthere,sowe
reachforsubstancestosatisfythat.Junkfoodsfitthe bill.
Anotherprominenttheorydominatingthefieldfor identifyingthereasonforfoodaddiction,isthatof dopamineresponseinthebrain.Dopamineisa neurotransmitterinthebrainthatconveysthefeeling ofpleasure.Sugarincreasesdopamine,butthen,if eateninexcess,dopamineoutputisoverstimulated. Inshortorder,ifnotregulatedbyoureatinghabits, thedopaminereceptorsitesbegintodownregulate. Thatmeansyouhavetoeatmoreandmoreinorder togetthesame“happysignal”fromthebrain. Becausethereareinadequatelevelsofdopamineand poorlyfunctioningreceptorsforit,whenyoufirst pullawayfromanaddictivefood,youget withdrawalsymptoms.Overtime,withsome consistentwork,thiscanbereversed.
Leptinisalsofrontandcenterasareasonfor addictions.Leptinisahormonewhichisstoredinthe whitefattytissuesofthebody.Itisreleasedin responsetoalreadystoredfatandenergyneeds.If youareskippingmeals,eatingnutrient-devoidfoods and/oryourleptinlevelsdroptoolow,thebody thinksyou’reinastateoffamineandlowersthe metabolismtoassistyouthroughthisperceived famine.Thelackofenergypromptsyoutostart eatingtorestorethoselevels.Unfortunately,most seekthesugar-ladenfoods,furtheringtheproblems.
