Thenshemanagedtohavetheincomeand retirementbenefitsofaveterandivertedintoher ownaccount.Shetookoutloansintheelderly veteran'sname,withthemoneygoingintoher pocket,andusedtheveteran'screditanddebit cards.

Butshedidn'tstopthere.Inanotherscheme,she linkedveteranswithlandlords,butkeptthe moneytheypaidforsecuritydepositsandrent. Thelegalnamesforthesearewirefraudand aggravatedidentitytheftandinvolved27 victims.

WhileaDepartmentofJusticepressrelease statedthat"elderabuseandfinancialfraud targetedatseniorsisakeypriority,"nowherein thesentencingdoesitcalloutthespecific punishmentforthat.Theycarefullylistedthe typesofelderabuse(physicalabuse,financial fraud,scamsandexploitation,caregiverneglect andabandonment,psychologicalabuseand sexualabuse),butdon'tseemtohavemadeit specificallypartofthiscase.

Atthetimeoftheindictment,thismiserable excuseforahumanfacedapossible20yearsin prison,plustwoyearsafterpleadingguiltytoone countofwirefraudandonecountofaggravated identitytheft.Intherecentsentencing,shegota mere9.5years.

Thisdiseaseisdevastating,andthereisnobook oramagicformulaforhowtofaceit.ButIfeel stronglythatwecandomoretoeasethepainof thosewhosufferfromAlzheimer’s,tohelptheir caregivers,andmostimportantly,tofindacure.
