Itdependsontheirage.Agroupofpigletsis alitterorfarrow,butthegroupbecomesa droveordriftwhentheyarealittleolder.A groupofolderpigsgoesbyseveraldifferent names–asounder,passel,parcel,herd,or team.Malesareboars,andfemalesaresows, butafemalethathasneverbeenmatedis calledaqueen.Ifshehasneverbeen pregnantorispregnantforthefirsttime, she’sagilt.Acastratedmaleisreferredtoas abarrow.

•We’veallheardtheexpression“sweating likeapig,”butit’saninaccuratephrase, becausepigsdon’tsweat!Whentheyneed tocoolthemselves,theywallowinmud, gettingridofbodyheatthroughtheirskin andrespiration.Oncetheoutside temperaturereachesbetween63and70 degreesF(17to21C),theywillseekout mud,frequentlycoveringthemselvesfrom headtotoe.Wallowingservesasasunscreen fortheirtenderskin,aswellasawaytoget ridofliceandticks.It’salsoawayof markingtheirterritory.

WHENVITAMINSAND MINERALSFIGHT

Theworldofvitaminsandmineralsiscomplex, yetsimple.Weareaccustomedtotakinghandfuls ofisolatedmineralsorisolatedandsynthetic vitaminsbythehandfuls,withoutregardtothe potentialfightbetweenthem.Furthermore,welive inaworldof“moreisbetter”–megadosingof vitamins–toourdetriment.Moreisnot necessarilybetter,andespeciallysyntheticisnot good.

Tworelationshipsexistamongmineralsand vitamins:theyeachhaveantagonisticand synergisticqualities.Somemineralsopposeother minerals,somevitaminsopposeothervitamins, andmineralsandvitaminscanopposeeachother. Whenwemicro-manageourvitaminsand minerals(collectivelyreferredtoas “supplements”),thetendencyistosay“Oh,I’m toolowinmagnesium,soIbettertakeabunchof it”.That“bunchofit”couldactuallycausea deficiencyofanothermineral.Infact,amineral cannotbeaffected(eithertoomuchortoolittle), withoutaffectingatleasttwootherminerals,each ofwhichwillthenaffecttwoothers,thenotherson downtheline.Thisiswherethecomplexitycomes in(we’lltalkaboutthesimplicitylater).

TheDepartmentofVeteransAffairsrecently releasedits2022NationalVeteranSuicide PreventionAnnualReport.Suicidenumbersare down,theysay,forthesecondyearinarow.

Atthesametime,theyannouncedtheStaff SergeantParkerGordonFoxSuicidePrevention Grants,aprogramthatgivesmoneyto communityorganizationstocreatesuicide preventionprograms,andauthorized$174 milliontobehandedoutoverthecourseofthree yearstoprovidethoseservices.

Thelistofgroupsthatreceivedthegrantsis impressive,withmostreceivingthemaximum amountof$750,000.Butit'sthegroupsthat receivedlesseramountsthatarousecuriosity.

WarHorsesforVeteransreceivedone-thirdthe maximumamount,yetthey'reveryhands-on, matchinghorseswithveteransandfirst respondersunderstresstohelpthemrecover fromtrauma.UnitedStatesVeteransInitiative providesjobassistance,rentalassistanceand muchmore,buttheyreceivedonlyasmallgrant.
