AfewmonthsagoIescortedthreeverynervous elderlyladiestothefoodbank.By"escorted,"I meanIhadtoscoutoutthesituationinadvance, comebackwithareport(no,thefoodbankstaff wouldn'taskembarrassingquestionsabout finances)andthenactuallytaketheladiestothe foodbankinmycartopickuptheirgroceries. Fast-forwardafewmonths,andI'vejustlearned thatsaidladiesactuallywenttothefoodbankby themselvestoday...andhadawonderfultime. Youwouldn'tthinkthat"wonderfultime"would beanaptdescriptionofatriptoafoodbank,but theyweredelightedbythewholeexperience.For thispick-up,thefoodbankdidthingsadifferent way:Havingreceivedanabundanceofdonations fromvariousplaces,thistimetheyinvitedtheir "guests"intothestorageareaandallowedthem topickoutexactlywhattheywantedfortheir holidaymeals.
Oneoftheladieschoseasmallturkey,anothera turkeybreasttobemadeintosandwichesandpot pies,andthethirdahamforfuturecasseroles, knowingthattheyweregoingtosplitthebounty whentheyhadholidaymealstogether.They negotiatedtheirwayupanddownthestorage areaaisles,accompaniedbyafriendlystaffer, chattingaboutpotentialrecipesandcollectinga widervarietyoffoodsthaneachwouldget individuallyduringatypicalfoodpick-up.
