It'snotenoughthatIspentpartofmychildhood onabasethatendedupasaSuperfundsite.This weekIdiscoveredthatmycurrenttown,where I'velivedformanyyears,haswater contaminatedbychemicalsfromthenearby now-defunctbase.

Thebase,amerefewmilesfrommyhome,was declaredaSuperfundsiteinthe1980sduetothe firefightingfoamsthatcontainedtwodifferent perfluorinatedalkylatedsubstances(PFAS), specificallyperfluorooctanoicacid(PFOA)and perfluorooctanesulfonicacid(PFOS),both deadly"foreverchemicals."Threeyearslater responsibilitieswereestablishedforwhowould dealwiththemess,andthebasewaseventually closedduetoBRAC(baserealignmentand closure).

Thebasewasrepeatedlycleanedandtestedover theyears,withacrespavedovertocontainthe worstofthecontaminatedgroundthatthey couldn'tdigup.Changesweremadeinhowthe waterwastreatedastimewenton,butchemicals werestillfoundinthewater.Insomeareas,a landfillcapwasputinplace;inothers,therewas removalofmoresoil;andinsomeareasthere wascleanupandongoingmonitoring. Eventuallythoseinauthorityconsideredthe wholematterdoneanddusted.

NowwelearnthattheoriginalPFASchemicals atthebasemaybecontaminatingtheaquifer-wherewegetourdrinkingwater.Hiddenaway undertheirdirtcap,thosechemicalsappearto havemigrateddownhill.Testsdonelastyear showthatthelevelofchemicalswasdouble whatthestaterecommends,andonewellwas takenoffline.Newmonitorswereinstalled. Now,however,arecenttestshowedextremely highreadings,higherthanever,withsuspicion thatclosingthatfirstwellwasdrivingthe chemicalstotheremainingwellswhereweget ourdrinkingwater.

Thelessonhereisthis:Ifyoulivenearabase thatwasdeemedaSuperfundsite,andif remediationwasdoneandthesitedeclaredtobe clean,thatdoesnotmeanproblemswon'tcome backinthefuture.
