•Carouselsdidn’tstartoutasasourceof amusement.Duringthe12thcentury,they wereatrainingmachineforwarriors.Infact, theSpanishandItalianwords“garosello” and“carosella”translate“littlewar.” Cavalrysoldiersincombattrainingwould rideonhangingsaddlescarryingspears,and wouldattempttoaimthelancethrough hangingmetalrings.Thetrainingincluded games,competitions,andjoustingexercises.
•ThefirstknowncarouselrideintheU.S.ran in1799.LocatedinSalem,Massachusetts,it wasknownasthe“woodenhorsecircus ride”andthe“TrojanCircusRide.”
•Itwasn’tuntilthe1800sthatplatform carouselsbecamepopularforamusement. Atfirst,theywerepoweredbyhumans, animals,orbicycles,butitwasn’tlong beforesteambecamethechoiceforpower.

•ThatyoungGermanimmigrantwasnamed CharlesLooff,andafterhisfirsteffortat ConeyIsland,Looffwentontohand-carve 40carouselsbetween1876and1916,about tenofwhichsurvive.Hiscreationswere quiteornate,withgoldandsilver ornamentation,sparklingmirrorsand jewels,andhorsemanesandtailsmadewith realhorsehair.Althoughthemajorityofold carouselsarelocatedintheeasternUnited States,oneLooffcarouselsstilloperatesat RiverfrontParkinSpokane,Washington.In 1909,Looff’sdaughterlivedinSpokane, whereherhusbandownedNatatoriumPark, aswimmingvenueandamusementpark.
