TIDBITS® INVESTIGATES
AUGUST EVENTS by Kathy Wolfe
August has been action-packed over the years. This week, Tidbits brings you some historymaking events from the crazy days of summers past and present. • When the cornerstone of the Statue of Liberty was laid in August of 1884, it was placed on Bedloe’s Island, which previously had been known as Love Island. The land didn’t officially become Liberty Island until 1956. When the Statue of Liberty arrived from France, it was in 350 individual pieces that were put together and officially dedicated in October of 1886. • The first edition of Sports Illustrated hit the newsstands in August of 1954, featuring Milwaukee Braves player Eddie Mathews on the cover. Inside, readers found a tri-fold of 27 baseball trading cards, including such greats as Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider. Although a hit, the magazine showed no profit for the next 12 years. Michael Jordan has set the record for the number of cover appearances at 56, with the New York Yankees the most featured team. Four U.S. Presidents have made the cover — Kennedy, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. Every year, Sports Illustrated gives its “Sportsman of the Year” award. Roger Bannister, the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, was given that honor during the magazine’s inaugural year. turn the page for more!

Saving Money on Office Supplies Each week I share money saving ideas for your business. This week’s tip can also help you save money in your home. 1. Compare Retailers: You don’t have to physically visit each store if they have a website shop online. Some businesses consider warehouse clubs for items that they purchase most frequently. There are two drawbacks: (1) selection is limited and may change and (2) you must travel to the store to purchase the items. 2. Review Your Inventory: Look at the quality of the items that you are purchasing. Ask yourself; “Do I need to buy brand name supplies or can I use the generic store brand? Can I use a thinner and less expensive packing tape, file folders or paper clips? A few dollars on the most frequently purchased office supplies
AUGUST EVENTS (continued):
• In August of 1914, the 48-mile (77-km) Panama Canal opened to ship traffic, with its first cargo liner, the SS Ancon. It had been under construction since 1904, and opening day was two years ahead of schedule. Nearly 27,500 people lost their lives during the construction. By passing through the canal, a ship sailing from New York to San Francisco saves about 8,000 miles (12,875 km) over a trip around the tip of South America’s Cape Horn. During the canal’s early days, about 1,000 ships passed through each year. That figure today is close to 15,000 ships making the nine-hour pass between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. • August is a month for stray baseballs! In 1979, Seattle Mariner Ruppert Jones hit a foul ball in the Kingdome that stuck in the stadium’s loudspeaker above the first base line. The following August, Yankee Bob Watson had a hit off the Kingdome’s center-field speaker. The very next day, Watson did exactly the same thing! Shortly after that feat, the speakers were raised from 102 feet (31 m) above the field to 132 feet (40.2 m). In August of 1983, Yankee pitcher Dave Winfield threw a warmup ball and accidentally struck and killed a seagull at the Toronto Blue Jays’ stadium. But pitcher Nolan Ryan was in complete control during August of 1989 when he became the first Major League pitcher to achieve 5,000 strikeouts. By the time he retired four years later, he had struck out 5,714 batters. • It’s been 34 years this month since the death of Elvis Presley at age 42 at his Graceland home. The official cause of death was listed as coronary arrhythmia. The King’s funeral was held at his home, with a processional to Forest Hill Cemetery following the service. More than 80,000 people lined the route. • Henry Leland founded the Cadillac Automobile Company in August of 1902, naming it after his ancestor, French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded the city of Detroit in 1701. • When William Gray’s wife became very ill in 1888, he was in desperate need of a telephone to call a doctor. There were very few phones in Hartford, Connecticut, and Gray ran to a neighboring factory, begging to use theirs, but was told it was not for public use. When the owners finally gave in to his pleading, the doctor was reached, and Mrs. Gray recovered.
will add up to big savings. 3. Price Compare: Do your homework and compare prices on the items that you most frequently buy. Be careful when comparing online prices. Some retailers offer free shipping if you order a minimum amount of supplies and some discounts are from the (List Price) or Manufactures Retail Price not the Sale Price listed in store. Also, low prices on small volume or inexpensive items like pens, pencils and paper are not a good indicator of overall prices. Stores that under cut their prices on these items will often charge more on other items to make up the profit that they sacrifice. 4. Negotiate: If your company purchases a significant amount of office supplies every month you can negotiate a purchase contract with your supplier. This strategy usually applies to larger companies or larger purchasing orders. A useful key to negotiating a contract in your favor is to first identify the supplies you buy most often (in terms of dollars spent). Concentrate your negotiations on these items. 5. Bulk Order: Just because you are a small business or just shopping for your home doesn’t mean that you can’t save money. Look for items that you can purchase in bulk. For example, instead of buying paper in 500 sheet packs, consider buying a case of 5,000 sheets. However, there are
To Crate or Not to Crate? By Sam Mazzotta
Q: What’s your view of kennel cages? My wife hates the idea of using one to train our dog Sandy, but I disagree. What do you say? -- Jerry, Las Cruces, N.M.
A: I’m personally OK with the concept of crating (or “kennel cages”). It’s an effective way to housetrain a puppy (who won’t soil a sleeping or living area) and teaches it to stay comfortable and relaxed in a similar container, the travel crate, which is essential to traveling with your dog. However, I do see frequent instances where the crate is misused, with negative consequences for dog and owner alike. The crate also serves as a home or den for your dog. So it always has to be seen by Sandy as a safe place to be, perhaps the safest place in the house for her. If you use the crate to punish Sandy, such as shutting her up in it when she’s being hyperactive or disobedient, she could associate it with negative feelings and avoid going into it. I recommend you learn as much as you can about using the crate to train Sandy. The American Dog Trainers Network has a list of tips on furnishing the crate, getting her to accept it and using it as a positive training tool. Find the list here: http:// www.inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html. It also includes important safety tips, such as always removing Sandy’s collar before putting her into the crate, and making sure she’s not left in an environment that’s too hot or freezing cold. two tradeoffs: (1) you will have to tie up some money in order to buy the larger quantities and (2) you will need space to store the bulk items that you buy. 6. Set Up An Account: This way suppliers will provide you with a statement of what you have ordered over the past month or year. This information is normally used to charge back supply costs in larger companies, but it can also be used by you to negotiate a better contract. 7. Rewards Programs: Purchase your office supplies with a rewards credit card or ask if they have a separate customer loyalty/rewards program. Office furniture, equipment and office supplies seem like a minor expense. However, billions of dollars are spent in the U.S. every year on office supplies. If you do not manage and control your office supply expenditures, these lesser purchases can start to add up very quickly. Use these strategies and start saving money on your office supplies. This incident spurred Gray, a machinist, to invent a coin-operated telephone. He received his patent in August of 1889, and the first payphone was installed at a local bank. By 1902, the United States was home to 81,000 payphones. • The first and last atomic bombings in history took place in August of 1945. The United States dropped the first nuclear weapon, known as “Little Boy,” on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6 and the second, called “Fat Man,” on Nagasaki three days later. Fatality estimates for Hiroshima were 90,000 to 160,000 people and 60,000 to 80,000 for Nagasaki. • On an August morning in 1907, Seattle residents shopped at the Pike Place Market for the first time. This famous street market came into being because citizens were tired of being overcharged for their produce. Avoiding the middleman, farmers brought their wares to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street, and were met by more than 10,000 shoppers. Today the Market’s nine acres house more than 200 full-time businesses and 190 craftspeople, as well as 100 farmers who rent space by the day. The Market is also home to 300 apartments. It’s now one of Washington state’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing 10 million visitors annually. • Visit Twinsburg, Ohio, during the first weekend of August, and you can get in on the Twins Day Festival. When it began in 1976, the community hosted 37 sets of twins. Attendance reached a peak of 2,680 sets in 1994 and settled in at 1,700 last year. The Festival doesn’t limit itself just to twins — They happily welcome all multiples to a weekend with featuring s parade, talent shows and musical entertainment. • We’ve all heard of the Cy Young Award, but how much do we really know about Cy Young? Denton T. (Cy) Young pitched his first major league baseball game in August of 1890 for the Cleveland Spiders. He was the first to pitch a perfect game and was responsible for many other records, some of which still stand. Young has the most career wins (511) and the most innings pitched (7,355) during his 22year pro ball career. The Cy Young Award, which honors the season’s best pitcher, was established in 1956, the year after his death. • The United States’ first official census commenced on the first Monday in August of 1790. • During the first week of August every year, the community of Sturgis, South Dakota, population 6,400, hosts the Black Hills Classic Motorcycle Rally. Begun in 1938 with nine bikers in a half-mile race, the event now draws hundreds of thousands of participants. Record-setting attendance was at the rally’s 60th anniversary in 2000, when more than 600,000 bikers cruised into Sturgis. In 1976, the average amount spent per person was $50. Today that figure tops $1,000. The community’s businesses earn 95 percent of their annual revenue during this one week, and the state’s coffers are filled with about $1 million in sales tax alone.

• Double the amounts you prepare, and freeze the rest for days when you really don’t want to cook at all. Be sure to label the container and use it within a few weeks. • If income allows, consider ordering one week of a plan where meals are delivered to your door. While the cost would be prohibitive to do this constantly, having a few meals in the freezer would be handy for those times you don’t want to cook. • Take a cooking class and learn steps to fix quick meals. • Ask your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist if you need help with creating a menu, portion sizes and nutritional values. If you’re truly stuck in a not-cooking rut, in a pinch, remember: Canned fruit and vegetables are better than none at all. Peanut butter on crackers with a banana offers nutrition. It takes only a few minutes to scramble eggs, add cheese and make toast. Acupuncture for Pain Relief
Farmington Village
By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have never seen you address acupuncture. I have had a bad back for three months, have seen two doctors and have followed their instructions. I have taken medicines that ease the pain. My back isn’t as sore as it once was, but it still bothers me. Acupuncture has been suggested. What are your views on it? -- M.L. ANSWER: I have no misgivings about trying acupuncture for pain relief. The Chinese have used it for centuries. Any treatment that lasts that long must have some value. Fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points and are left in place for 15 to 30 minutes. From time to time, the acupuncturist stimulates the needles. The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society endorse acupuncture. A recent review article in the New England Journal of Medicine, a premier medical journal, also endorsed it. Who am I not to follow suit? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: It’s that time of year again -- the no-see-um season. I can feel a sharp sting when bitten. It goes away and then returns as a large swelling with incessant itching. What can I do to prevent this reaction? Others don’t react this bad. I also use DEET to deter these diabolical pests. Should I wash it off as soon as I get indoors? -- C.R. ANSWER: No-see-ums got that name because they’re barely visible, only 1/16th of an inch. Dawn and dusk are their busiest hours. Avoidance is the best protection. The red welt you describe arises
about 12 or more hours after the bite and can be as large as an inch in diameter. It does itch. DEET is the best repellent, but it’s not a 100 percent barrier for all users. Have you tried a higher concentration? Are you following label directions regarding when to reapply it? When you get back home, wash treated skin with soap and water. Also, you can spray your clothes with permethrin. It will give you additional protection. Wear long slacks tucked into your socks and long-sleeved tops. As for the itch, antihistamines are suggested. I admit they don’t work for everyone. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I think I may have the illness where a person pulls out clumps of hair. I’m not sure of the name. I find I do this after I have caffeine. I have been off caffeine for years, and I do not pull my hair out. I thought this might be helpful to others. -- K.H. ANSWER: The name of the condition is trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-TILL-uh-MAY-kneeuh). Between 4 million and 11 million Americans have it. It’s called an impulse disorder. I hadn’t heard about a caffeine connection. If this holds true for others, they will deeply appreciate your advice.

Do-It-Yourself Credit Repair If you’ve been through a rough financial patch, it’s likely that your credit has suffered. Late payments, minimum-only payments, creditcard balances that are too high and maybe even auto repossession could have drastic impacts on your credit score. If you’re in a better position now, possibly with a new or better job, your credit can be repaired. It will take time, but it can be done. Here’s how: First, find out how bad the damage is. Send for your credit reports from all three of the major credit bureaus. Go over them carefully. Look for mistakes, such as accounts that aren’t yours, wrong credit limit listed and accounts that you have already paid off showing a current balance. Notify the credit bureaus in writing (certified mail, not online) about any errors, and ask for an investigation. They have 30 days to respond. If they can’t verify the accuracy of the item, they have to remove it. Once the repairs are made, get another batch of credit reports and do a line-by-line comparison. Next, make a plan to hone down your credit. Determine which of your credit cards has the
biggest debt-to-availability ratio. A card with $1,000 availability and a $900 balance is worse than a card with $10,000 availability and only $2,000 owed. The reason is that nearly maxing out a card counts more heavily against you because a larger percentage of your available credit is used. Don’t cancel any cards, for the above reason. When you get a card down to a zero balance, that availability helps your overall percentages. (History helps: Keep old accounts open, if only for the longevity they show.) Pay more than the minimum on each card, on time, every month, with more money going to the ones with higher percentages of available credit used. Look at the credit report: You’ll see a column indicating whether you have been making minimum or better payments. Even $10 extra takes you out of the “minimum only” category. Don’t take on any new credit until the current problems are resolved. Full credit repair will take time, but it’s worth the aggravation. The biggest benefit to taking steps to repair your credit is that future credit will be cheaper. You won’t be in the “likely to default” category anymore, saddled with high interest rates. JESSE OWENS Track and field Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens set record after record, but not without having to hurdle over many obstacles along the way. This collection of facts will help you learn more about this amazing champion. • James Cleveland Owens was the son of a sharecropper farmer and the grandson of a slave. His family migrated from Alabama in 1922 when he was nine years old, joining 1.5 million other African Americans moving north out of the segregated South. The Owens family settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where Owens received his lifelong nickname from a teacher who had difficulty with his Southern drawl. Called “J.C.” by his family, when he told the teacher his name, she interpreted it as “Jesse,” and the name stuck. • As a young boy, Owens took odd jobs to help his family — delivering groceries, loading freight cars and working at the local shoe repair shop. His running career started during junior high under the encouragement of coach Charles Riley, who allowed him to practice early in the morning in order to make it to his after-school job. • During his years at Cleveland’s East Technical High School, Owens matched the world
record in the 100-yard (91-m) dash of 9.4 seconds. It was on to Ohio State University, where he became known as the “Buckeye Bullet.” At 1935’s NCAA Big Ten meet in Ann Arbor, Owens set three world records and tied a fourth, a feat accomplished over a 45-minute span. His long jump record of 26 feet, 8.25 inches (8.13 m) was to endure for 25 years. His college career boasted a record eight individual NCAA championships. • Yet for all his success, Owens was made to live off campus, as were all African American athletes. When traveling with the team, he was forced to eat at blacks-only restaurants and overnight at blacks-only hotels, separate from the rest of the team. He received no scholarships for his athletic prowess, having to pay for his schooling through part-time jobs as a waiter, night elevator operator and gas station attendant. • Owens traveled to the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin under a cloud of racial prejudice. Adolf Hitler, hoping for German domination at the Games, was promoting “Aryan racial superiority,” and Nazi propaganda portrayed Africans as inferior. Owens took the world by surprise when he took the gold in the 100 meters, the 200 meters, the long jump and, as a member of the relay team, became the first American track and field athlete to win
four gold medals in a single Olympiad. On the first day of competition, Hitler shook hands with German winners only, leaving the stadium immediately afterward. When Olympic officials were adamant that he either congratulate every medalist or greet none, Hitler declined to attend the remaining medal presentations. • The racial prejudice continued on the home front when Owens had to ride the freight elevator at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel to a reception following a ticker-tape parade honoring his victories. He later said that Franklin Roosevelt, “snubbed me. The President didn’t even send me a telegram.” Yet that didn’t hinder Owens from becoming a sought-after inspirational speaker and serving underprivileged youth. Surprisingly, this fine athlete was a cigarette smoker for 35 years and succumbed to lung cancer at age 66.
Marguerite Boutique By Samantha Weaver • It was American ventriloquist and comedian Willie Tyler who made the following sage observation: “The reason lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place is that the same place isn’t there the second time.” • Even flight attendants have their own patron saint, as declared by Pope Paul XXIII in 1962: Saint Bona of Pisa. • Many people believe that the Gutenberg Bible, which came from the presses of Johannes Gutenberg in the 1450s, is the first example of a printed book, but that’s not true; it’s the first book printed using movable type. The oldest known printed book is actually the “Diamond Sutra,” which was printed in China more than 550 years before the Gutenberg Bible. • In many Middle Eastern cultures, it is traditional to celebrate a wedding with five events. The first is the engagement party, during which the bride-to-be changes clothes several times. When the bride and groom sign the marriage contract there is another party, again with numerous changes of clothing by the bride. The day before the wedding there is a henna party, during which the bride and others are painted with elaborate designs that are thought to ward off evil spirits. The reception takes place after the wedding, and guests are often given five almond pieces, each piece symbolizing one of the sacred wedding wishes: health, happiness, wealth, longevity and fertility. Seven days after the wedding is the final celebratory event, known as sabaa, which is for women only and is analogous to the wedding shower we have in the West. • The town of North Pole, Alaska, is actually 1,700 miles south of the planet’s geographical North Pole. ▶ To clean out the drawers of my husband’s tool cabinet without disturbing the tools, I tucked a kneehigh panty hose leg over my vacuum cleaner wand. Most things stayed put, but the one or two small pieces of hardware that got sucked up were easily retrieved. I did this on his workbench too. I picked up all the dust and shavings along with the stray pieces of hardware. I pulled the hardware out of the hose leg, and they were in a tidy pile for him to put away. -- U.L. in Kansas ▶ Ripen a green tomato by wrapping it in a sheet of newspaper or placing it in a small, plain paper bag. The Todd Father By Mark Vasto
I’m trying to relax before they get here, looking over the menu, looking for a quick sip before they do, but can’t. Why? Tommy the bartender is over in the corner talking to server Jessica. Why? Because Jessica is, like, soooooooo mad that Todd just took another one of her tables! And the other server, Tim? He has worked here for soooooooo long and totally could have told you that Todd was going to do that. Oh, and yes ... he’s told the owners many times before, but they don’t care! Re-enter Tommy -- who at one time had a very noble charge to fill as a bartender -- seconds after my in-laws and wife arrive. The only thing I’ve gotten so far is a packet of stale oyster crackers and a real chip on my shoulder for this guy Todd. Sometimes, all I want is an ice-cold martini and a story off the hot stove. It means more when you’re on deadline and sitting at a table nursing a soda with your in-laws. These are the ones who actually planned for their retirement, take time out from their golf game to watch your kid, and will probably pick up this tab ... all in the hopes you won’t end up living in their basement. But tonight, I’m sitting on a scoop, so I’m edgy. And so, to my detriment, decide to hash out my misgivings on breaking the story via text after dinner with a former sportswriter who now works as a “sellout.” Is this lame, or is it my “straw stirs the drink” moment?
“You’ve been [that team’s] [pliant submissive] since I met you,” she says, with warmth and encouragement. “Do some original investigation at least.” A furious text stream follows. I am compared to terrible people and hypocrites ... disgraced sitcom sidekicks like Boner, Chachi Arcola and the Great Gizzoo. Real below-the-belt stuff. I respond with a few go-to Godfather references. She swats them down by telling me that obscure Godfather quotes are, by far, the lamest thing a guy can introduce into a conversation with a girl. Yeah, whatever “Kay”...let me know when I’m conversing with a “girl.” The moment I hit “send” I was toast. I texted back: “The next send button I see is going to get wacked.” Never let anybody know what you’re thinking. Moments later, as I was inspecting fruit at a street-side stand, two send buttons pulled up and shot me in the back five times while that guy from Deer Hunter cried on the curb. So my original story went untold. I was scooped, but don’t think vengeance isn’t far from mind: Todd, you will be paying for stealing Jessica’s table.

Mernard Dismisses His Critics He has those jaunty sideburns that make him look a bit, you know, colorful. Menard has been criticized because his father is wealthy and has supported his son’s racing efforts. Just who out there would pass that up? In truth, Menard is quite modest, as reflected in the fact that he is quite terse. His answers to questions are seldom expansive, and he often speaks in sentences that aren’t complete. Examples from his press conference after winning Sunday’s Brickyard 400: “Can’t change people’s opinions. ... Can’t control it. ... Definitely for him (his dad). ... Sitting up in a suite for the inaugural one (Brickyard 400 in 1994). ... Saw Rick Mast win the pole. ... Passed a couple cars. ... Just started trying to maintain some kind of lap time being easy on the throttle, easy off, earlier than normal, easy on.”
Thirty-year-old Paul Menard (left) got his first victory of his Cup career at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 30. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo) boring. Others complain about how hard it is to see. No one doubts it takes considerable ability to win here.
You get the point.
Richard Childress didn’t put Menard in his No. 27 Chevy just because of sponsorship from the Menard’s chain of home-improvement warehouses. It didn’t hurt, though.
But anyone who thinks Paul Menard is some international playboy, jetting around on his daddy’s money, has got it wrong. John Menard was able to make sure his son got the best equipment, but it was Paul who proved he could do the job. Some find Indy
“I caught a lot of flak back early last year when we decided to go with four teams,” said Childress. “I’ve been watching Paul ever since he won the Nationwide race (Milwaukee, 2006). He doesn’t wear equipment out. He’s consistent. He’s really good. Got a cool head
on him in all situations. “I knew if the right situation came along, we’d win. To get ‘Slugger’ (Labbe, Menard’s crew chief) to come over, John Menard support us ... that was a big jump going in on a fourth team.” Menard bounced around, from Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2007-08 and to Richard Petty Motorsports in 200910. It took Childress to provide him with what proved to be a winning combination in one of NASCAR’s premier races. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

It was 41 years ago this month that Woodstock made the headlines as the biggest rock festival of its time. Tidbits invites you to learn more about this musical gathering as we revisit the event. • Its official title was “The Woodstock Music and Art Fair — an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music.” Dairy farmer Max Yasgur agreed to allow the festival to be held on his 600acre farm near Bethel, New York, a community 43 miles southwest of Woodstock, New York. • The citizens of Bethel immediately protested the upcoming gathering, and promoters continually told town officials that there would be no more than 50,000 attendees. About 186,000 advance tickets were sold prior to the concert at a price of $18, about $105 in today’s money. Promoters were expecting 200,000 fans. • Three days before the festival was to begin, the organizers realized that the fences around the area would present a problem with the anticipated crowds and removed them. This resulted in the concert becoming free for thousands that streamed into the area. By the time the music was set to begin, there were 500,000 concert-goers. • The first band to sign a contract for the festival was Creedence Clearwater Revival for the sum of $10,000. • Rains in the days prior to the event produced muddy roads and fields. Massive traffic jams clogged roads unequipped for the volume of people. There were inadequate sanitation facilities and first-aid for the number of people and shortages of food and water. But nothing seemed to dampen the spirits of the fans as they listened to a total of 32 performances at the threeday event, including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, the Grateful Dead and Joan Baez. Artists that may have forever regretted declining the offer to perform included the Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Doors and Led Zeppelin. • Three recorded deaths occurred during the Woodstock Festival, including a heroin overdose. Another concert-goer sleeping in a neighboring hayfield was killed when a tractor ran over him. A baby was born in a car stuck in the traffic jam, HOMEOWNERS • CONTRACTORS • INDUSTRIAL • RENTALS • SALES • SERVICE

The average American uses 80 gallons of water a day. In much of the rest of the world, that figure is 2.5 gallons. Did you know that most people waste 6 gallons of water by running the water while brushing their teeth? And how about that 60-gallon daily shower? Try installing a lowflow showerhead (about $5) and turn the water off when it’s not absolutely necessary that it be running.

: I am really digging the new TNT show, “Franklin and Bash.” Do you know if it’ll be back for a second season? -- Hank F., Baltimore
: Well, Hank, if you’ve got a hankering for a second season of “Franklin and Bash,” then I’ve got good news for you: TNT has picked up the hit legal drama for another season. MarkPaul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer will return as the titular characters to cause more waves at their button-down agency. No word yet on many episodes will be in the new season or when it will premiere, but we’ll assume it’s summer 2012. The show also stars Malcolm McDowell, Dana Davis, Kumail Nanjiani, Reed Diamond and Garcelle Beauvais.
on Britain’s ITV network, for a total of 14 episodes -garnered rave reviews and numerous accolades. Aside from starring the fabulous Helen Mirren, it also had bigname guest stars like Ralph Fiennes, Tom Wilkinson and David Thewlis. Director Tom Hooper, who won the Academy Award last year for “The King’s Speech,” also directed series six. Those are some mighty big shoes to fill for NBC -- which will air the U.S. version beginning Sept. 22-- but I have my fingers crossed for Maria Bello and crew to make “Prime Suspect” their own.
Q

When will seasons two and three be out? -- Rita S., Port Charlotte, Fla. : The USA network show about a con man working with an FBI agent to catch criminals (as part of his workrelease program from prison) recently returned for its third season in June, so you’ll have to wait a bit for those DVDs. However, you can now find season two at your favorite local and online retailers. The four-disc set includes all 16 episodes, deleted scenes, a gag reel, featurettes and commentaries for episodes 9, 12 and 16.

WOODSTOCK (continued):
while another mother-to-be was airlifted by helicopter from the scene to a nearby hospital where she gave birth. • It was the organizers’ wish that the Festival be closed out with singing cowboy Roy Rogers crooning “Happy Trails,” but when approached by the executive producer, Rogers turned him down. Fans had to settle for Jimi Hendrix shutting it down on Monday morning. • When Max Yasgur was approached about a 1970 encore festival, the answer was no, in Yasgur’s words, “I’m going back to running a dairy farm.” He was sued by neighbors for property damage and incurred severe damage to his otwn farm.
He was awarded a $50,000 settlement. The community of Bethel further prevented a second concert by passing “mass gathering” laws. Yasgur sold his farm in 1971 and died two years later at age 53. Rolling Stone magazine featured a full-page obituary, something that very few non-musicians have ever received. • The year after Woodstock, a documentary film chronicling the event was released, an effort that received the Academy Award for Best Documentary. The proceeds financed the settlements of the 80 lawsuits that were filed against the organizers, as well as their $1.4 million debt.

Make Summer Sand Candles Like most people, I enjoy taking long walks on the beach. I love the feel of sand under my feet and the way it stretches for miles before me. And then I suddenly feel inspired, thinking of the ways sand can be used in decor and crafts. That’s when I know it’s time to go home and have some more fun. Here’s a popular sand craft kids enjoy at day camp year after year. The adults melt the wax and the kids create the molds and add decorations for state-of-the-art sand candles. With a child’s touch, they’re whimsical, spontaneous and useful.
To make candles at home, you’ll need: • Clean damp sand in a bucket or sandbox • 1 pound box of paraffin wax (available in canning section at most markets) • 1 saucepan • 1 tin can, such as a large soup can with lid removed. (Pinch rim of the can with pliers to form a spout for easy pouring) • Candle coloring or stubs from colored candles (optional) • Candle wicking (available at craft stores) • Pencil or sticks • Tiny trinkets, stones or shells (optional)
Here’s the fun: 1. Carve out a 2-3 inch depression in the damp sand, about 3-4 inches wide. Pat the sides and base of the depression to make a very firm mold for your candle. Press several trinkets into the mold, if you wish. 2. Meanwhile, an adult should fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and set the tin can in the center. Put a chunk of paraffin in the can and add candle stubs or coloring, if you wish. As the water gets hot, the wax will melt. Stir occasionally, keeping a constant eye on it, since it is flammable. 3. An adult should carefully pour the melted wax into the sand mold. While the wax is still liquid, place a length of wicking down the center of the mold with at least one inch of wicking exposed at the top. Hold the wick in place until the wax begins to harden. Then, prop the wick with a stick until the wax is completely hard. Or, tie the wick around the middle of a pencil and let it rest across the top of the mold with the wick in the wax. 4. When hard, gently lift the candle out of the sand mold. Brush off excess sand from the candle and embedded trinkets with an old toothbrush, leaving some sand on the surface for a natural look.
Identifying Marks Answer below
When learning how to identify birds, ask yourself: Does the bird have black or white wing bars? How many? Is there a stripe over the eye? Does it cling like a woodpecker or perch like a cardinal? Is the tail cocked like a mockingbird’s? Email: birdingbits@cfl.rr.com ©2011 King Features Syndicate, Inc.
Note: An adult should always be present when burning candles.
