IT’S TEA TIME!
It’s the world’s second most popular and cheapest beverage (after water), so shouldn’t you know a little more about tea? Tidbits has the goods on this drink, so listen up and learn! • Every day about three billion cups of tea are consumed around the world. In America, it can be found in 80% of households, and an estimated 127 million Americans are drinking it on any given day. Most of that tea comes from India, the world’s largest tea producer, processing about 850,000 tons each year. • Tea as we know it is about 5,000 years old. Legend has it that a Chinese emperor discovered a good cup of tea in 2737 B.C. when some tea leaves off the tree into his pot of boiling water, producing a pleasant aroma. Tea became popular in Europe during the 1600s and was brought to North America by the colonists. Britain’s Duchess of Bedford is said to have created the traditional afternoon tea around 1840, when she needed a pick-me-up to combat what she called “that sinking feeling.” • When the British government heavily taxed the tea shipped to the American colonies, in 1773, a group of 116 men dressed as Native Americans boarded British ships and tossed 342 chests of tea overboard, about 90,000 lbs. (40,823 kg) worth. In today’s currency, that was equal to nearly a turn the page for more! million dollars!

Fore! Look out as Tidbits presents a few facts about the tools necessary for a good golf game.
3535 Indian Trail • Orchard Lake, MI • 48324
• The ancient Romans played a game similar to golf as we know it, but the modern game of golf was developed in Scotland in the 1400s. The first written record is that of a ban of the sport by King James II in 1457, calling golf a distraction to learning archery, which was necessary for national defense. • The official rules of golf state that a golfer’s bag may contain 14 clubs. A typical player will carry a driver, two woods, seven irons, three wedges, and a putter. The putter has earned the nickname “the money club” because it is the one used to tap the ball into the hole. The first clubs were made entirely of wood, followed by wood shafts with iron heads. In the 1920s, steel-shafted clubs came into play. Shafts made of fiber-reinforced composite materials were introduced in the early 1970s. • The earliest golf balls were probably made of wood. Golf balls in the early 1800s consisted of thin leather pieces stuffed with feathers. Those that were very tightly packed flew the farthest. More than 5,000 patents have been granted for various forms of golf balls since 1900. Those little indentations on the ball are called dimples and were first used about 100 years ago. Players discovered that damaged balls flew farther than new ones, so companies began manufacturing balls in different shapes trying to increase the distances. One ingenious fellow studied the ball’s path, and came up with the current dimpled idea. Today’s regulation golf ball has 336 dimples. • An official golf ball should not weigh more than 1.62 oz., and must be at least 1.68 inches in diameter.

Piedmont Concrete, Inc. • There are about 32,000 golf courses worldwide, with close to 20,000 of those in the United States. The country of Singapore has one course every 10 square miles, giving it the record for the highest per population density. England has one course every 27 square miles, and Scotland every 56. Yet some of the most populated areas of the world have no golf at all, for example, the Ukraine, whose population exceeds 47 million with nary a course in sight! • During a 1971 tournament in England, a 26-year-old golf pro named John Hudson achieved two consecutive holes-in-one at the 11th and 12th holes. Don’t expect to tie his record – the chances of repeating this are one in 67 million. • If you’d like to golf on the world’s longest course, you’ll have to travel to Australia. Some of the tees are 50 miles (80.5 km) apart on the 850-mile-long (1368 km) Nullarbor Links course that spans two Australian states. Don’t be surprised if you encounter the occasional wild camel or wombat. Be sure to notch out enough time for your game – somewhere between three and four days! The cost seems reasonable, however at $46. ■

If you have Heart Disease, you should know there is strong epidemiologic evidence that Periodontitis provides an increased risk for future cardiovascular disease. 2. Dentists should discuss other risk factors for cardiovascular disease with their patients, including hypertension, obesity, and tobacco use. 3. If you have diabetes, you should know there is an independent association between Periodontitis “Gum Disease” and an increased risk for the development or progression of diabetes. Periodontal treatment can provide beneficial effects, so regular comprehensive periodontal evaluations should be part of your diabetes management program.
Our office specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. A simple test of your saliva can tell us if you are at risk. Contact us for more information.

Daily Brushing
Dear Dr. Abdal: How many times a day should I brush my teeth? -- Georgia T., Farmington Hills, MI Answer: The American Dental Association suggests that every one should brush their teeth at lease twice each day. There is some research that indicates that brushing once a day is sufficient to disrupt the formation of plaque that feeds the bacteria that cause decay. By only brushing once a day may not be enough for some people, depending on factors such as their diets and the efficacy of their brushing technique. American Dental Association also recommends you use fluoride toothpaste. Approved dental products will have the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

In addition you need to your toothbrush every three or four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth. Finally the American Dental Association recommends that you speak this with your dental hygienist who can help you build an oral care plan that meets your individual oral health needs and will be able to make a recommendation appropriate for you.

Call Unified Media Marketing Group Today. Pleural Effusion Is Fluid Around Lungs By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Dear Dr. Donohue: I had a little trouble breathing, so I saw my doctor, who ordered a chest X-ray. It showed fluid on the right lung. The doctor said he would have to do more tests to find out why the fluid appeared. Could you guess for me what those tests might be? What brought this on? -- R.H. Answer: A double-ply covering, called the pleura, encases each lung. A small space between the two leaves of pleura allows the lung to inflate and deflate effortlessly. The fluid you have is in the pleural space. The condition is a pleural effusion. The fluid is not actually in lung tissue. Infections, illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, heart failure, blood clots in the lungs, liver cirrhosis and chest trauma are some of the causes of pleural effusions. Cancer is another cause. Shortness of breath, chest discomfort and cough are some of the things that a pleural effusion engenders. Some people with an effusion have no symptoms at all. The fluid is discovered when a person has a chest X-ray, as was the case with you. The doctor is most probably planning to obtain a specimen of the fluid from the pleura. It’s not a difficult procedure. Analysis of the fluid provides information that determines what caused it. That information also allows the doctor to determine a treatment plan and provide you with a prognosis of what to expect. I’d like to speculate further for you, but I can’t. I need more information too. Dear Dr. Donohue: I was given Avodart to treat an enlarged prostate gland. During the six months of taking it, I went from a fully functioning man with a strong libido to 99 percent impotence and no interest in physical intimacy. My physician does not seem to care. What kind of treatment
should I seek? -- H.L. Answer: Avodart (dutasteride) is a medicine that can shrink an enlarged prostate gland. Achieving that allows free passage of urine. Impotence and decreased desire for sex are its side effects for a small number of users. Other drugs, without these side effects, exist. Furthermore, a number of office procedures can open the drainage canal of the bladder. You return home after the procedure. You should see a urologist immediately. Prostate enlargement and prostate cancer are discussed in the booklet on those topics. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dear Dr. Donohue: Two weeks ago, I contracted a cold. It’s gone, except for a troublesome cough, which is worse at night. I read in an issue of AARP Bulletin that a spoonful of honey at bedtime often gives better results than cough medicines. I tried it. The results were nothing less than miraculous. What do you say about this remedy? -- F.B. Answer: I say stick with it. Honey has been used for many years to suppress coughing. It’s even given to babies older than one year. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475.yearly in the United States. Hot Car Can Kill By Sam Mazzotta
Dear Paw's Corner: I was taking my groceries out to the car when I noticed two small puppies looking out the window of a car parked next to mine. The windows were rolled all the way up, and the pups were panting nonstop. I ran back into the store and asked the manager to page the dogs’ owner. Fortunately, the owner responded and went out to the car, saying he only meant to be inside for a few minutes. Can you let your readers know that leaving pets in a hot car, even “only for a few minutes,” could be a death sentence for them? Thanks. -- Charlotte in Reno, Nev. Dear Charlotte: You told them, and I thank you! The temperature inside a parked car, even with the windows cracked to allow airflow, can rise dramatically within just 10 minutes on a moderately cool day. When it’s 80 degrees F. outside, a car’s interior can heat up to 99 degrees in 10 minutes, and to 109 degrees in 20 minutes, according to a report by RedRover, a nonprofit animal protection organization. And if you think your dog is tough enough to take the heat, think again. Without sweat glands, dogs have trouble staying cool. And when their body temperature rises out of the normal range, their organs can be irreversably damaged in a shockingly short time. If that isn’t enough to convince you, consider this: In some states, owners who leave their pets in parked cars have been charged with felony cruelty to animals. So take heed. If you must go somewhere that you can’t bring your dog -- like a grocery store, a tourist attraction or elsewhere -- leave your pet at home. Send your questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. Did you know mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas don’t? Find out more in my new book “Fighting Fleas,” available now on Amazon. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cheer up, Lamb. Your emotional impasse will lift once you allow your highly tuned sense of justice to guide you on what to do about an associate’s questionable behavior. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) News about a project you hoped to work on might need more clarification. Take nothing just on faith. Draw up a list of questions, and insist on each being fully answered. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Giving your time to help others is fine. But don’t lose sight of your own needs. Make plans for an energy-restoring getaway with that very special person in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Congratulate yourself on getting that difficult job done to everyone’s satisfaction. This could be the first of many such challenges you might be offered down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) With your enthusiasm soaring again, you feel ready to tackle a tough new assignment. Good for you! And remember: Don’t be too proud to accept help when it’s offered. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Cupid rules the week for single Virgos eager to make a romantic connection. Meanwhile, Virgo couples experience renewed commitment in their relationships. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Home and work issues vie for your attention through early next week. Rely on your Libran sense of balance to keep you from being overwhelmed by either side. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creative projects might have to go on standby as you tackle other matters making demands on your time and energy. Things should ease by the middle of next week. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your energies are high, and so are your aspirations. But be careful not to let work dominate the week. It’s also important to spend time with family and friends. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s a good time to set aside your pride and stop nursing those hurt feelings. Instead, consider restoring relationships you want to have back in your life. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might be miffed at not being shown more appreciation for your hard work. But don’t brood over it. Recognition comes in its own time and in its own way. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With your inner creative juices starting to boil and bubble, this is a good time to launch a new arts-related project, or go back and restart the one you had set aside. Ask Your Auto Insurance Expert Q: How often should I speak with my insurance agency? -- Gary M., Southfield, MI A: It is essential that you are hearing from your insurance agency at least once per renewal. If they are reaching out to you inviting you for a review, you should take a few moments to call them to go over any changes that may need to be addressed. If you don’t hear from them...call them anyway! You and many others may feel reluctant to call because you don’t understand much about insurance. Well..that’s why you have an insurance professional taking care of your needs. Every customer-minded insurance agency has an open door at all times. Never hesitate to call and ask questions about your insurance coverages. Your agent and his/her staff are licensed and trained to explain what coverage you need to meet the needs of your family. If you don’t feel as though you are receiving the attention you need, you should look for another agency to take care of you. There are so many great agencies out there who are willing to go the extra mile for every customer! Kelly's Insurance Services Kelly Weaver Janeczek 14 Mile and Haggerty 248 960-3000

Dear Varsity Lincoln: I have heard a lot of buzz about the new 2013 Lincoln MKZ design. What have they changed on the new MKZ? - Brett A, W. Bloomfield, MI
Answer: What hasn’t changed would probably be the most accurate description! The open spaciousness of the 2013 Lincoln MKZ is a result of what’s not there. No traditional shifter creates a thin center console that flows gracefully through the cabin. Simply use your fingertips, to start the car and select a gear by pressing a button on the integrated center stack. Traditional audio and climate control knobs have been redesigned as well. Instead, set your sound and temperature with beautiful lighted slider bars and vivid LCD touch screen. You will be surrounded by rich woods and contemporary aluminum finishes that create visually stunning environment. Performance must feel right – in every sense and the 2013 MKZ won’t disappoint! The standard 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 turbocharged direct-injection engine, offers up to 33 mph hwy1 with 240 hp2 and 270 lb.-ft. of torque2 – the performance you’d expect from a 6-cylinder (FWD: 22 mpg city/33 hwy. AWD: 22 mpg city/31 hwy).1 Prefer even more of a rush, opt for the 3.7L Ti-VCT 24 –valve aluminum V6.3 It increases output to 300 hp and 277 lb.-ft of torque, and still offers impressive economy, thanks in part to shutters in the front grille that automatically close at speed to help you slip through the air with less resistance (FWD: 19 mpg city/28 hwy. AWD: 18 mpg city/26 hwy).1 For more information or to schedule an appointment to see the new 2013 Lincoln MKZ, call Varsity Lincoln at 248-3743412. 1

Q: How can AAA Travel Agents help plan multigenerational trips? A: We set up everything from airport shuttles to adjoining rooms. We can suggest tours that meet the family interests and “must see” sites and activities. Q: What makes a successful multigenerational vacation? A: Different generations will have different ideas of what they want out of a trip. We tell members to have a family meeting to gauge everyone’s wants and needs. We also advise families to come together for one meal or activity each day—whether it’s dinner or shore excursion. These shared experiences create family bonding time. Ask the Travel Agents: Kris Murphy, Nancy DeGroat (not pictured) and Debbie Adoryan.

MoneyBits Product recalls are all about safety. They’re not just about breakage or failure of a product to work properly -- potential injury or illness are behind most of the recalls. Fortunately we have a number of government agencies that oversee foods and products, and in many cases, it’s the manufacturer who issues the recall. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently listed these recalls: LED light bulbs -- 554,000 bulbs under the brand names Westinghouse, Definity, EcoSmart and Sylvania have been recalled by the manufacturer due to overheating. In some cases, there was damage to the socket and fire in the surrounding area, including carpets and floors. Check www. lsgc.com/recall for specific wattages or call 855574-2533. Toro Z Master Riding Mowers -- This is in addition to a similar recall of November 2012. The idler pulley can rub against the fuel tank, causing a potential fire hazard. See www.toro. com for more information or call 855-493-0090. Louisville Slugger OneX Fastpitch softball bat -- The barrel can come apart from the handle and hit people nearby. So far there have been

170 incidences. For more information, see www. slugger.com or call 800-282-2287. An even bigger recall category is food, and there we have two government watchdogs: the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. As with other products, it’s not always the inspectors who find something wrong, but the manufactures themselves who issue a recall. Recent recalls for food items include: --Pork pie products, due to misbranding and undeclared allergens (milk) --Sesame paste, due to Salmonella --Frozen chicken quesadilla, due to E. coli --Vanilla and chocolate ice cream, due to undeclared allergens (almonds, coconut, soy), --Ready-to-eat meatballs, due to Listeria. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration covers recalls on more than just cars and trucks. A recent recall involved five years of one brand of motorhome for steering wheels that detach from the mounting bracket, causing loss of steering. Another brand of motorhome was recalled for awning motors that
cause the awning to unfurl while the vehicle is moving. Your best bet is to use a throwaway email address and sign up for email recall notifications at all the agencies. Robert Miller
Ask Your Jeweler Dear Robert: How can I test gold jewelry to validate it is gold metal? -- Paul T., Southfield, MI Answer: Easy way to test gold jewelry is very simple. You just need face powder for make up and rub it on your skin. Following, rub the gold jewelry to same spot on your skin. Once you apply enough friction on your skin, color will change to black at the spot where you applied on your skin. It indicates that your metal is gold. Another way to tell if it is real goal is if overt time a piece of gold jewelry seems to be wearing off and showing a different metal beneath it, you probably have a piece that is only gold plated. Gold is not a magnetic metal, so if it pulls towards, or sticks to the magnet, it’s fake. However, just because it doesn’t react to the magnet doesn’t mean it is real, as non-magnetic metals are used in counterfeit pieces as well. If you are still concerned that your piece of jewelry is no real goal please bring it by JM Jewelry and one of our highly trained staff can examine it for you. How Secure Is ‘My Account’? I’m starting to have second thoughts about using Social Security’s online “My Account” feature. Yes, I have one. Yes, it’s handy. But scammers are targeting the My Accounts of seniors. The online account is beginning to look like not such a good idea. In a number of cases, the only way the victims knew anything was wrong was when they received a letter from Social Security verifying that they’d opened an online My Account.

No, they hadn’t. But someone else had. In some cases the scammers attempted to divert the direct deposit to an account at another bank. The Office of the Inspector General is investigating occurrences all over the country. There is a way, if you do have an account, to add a layer of security to your My Account: You can type in the last eight digits of your Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card. (Do this only if you’re very sure of your computer’s security.) I once made my very elderly neighbor a list of phone numbers that we pasted to the inside of her kitchen cabinet door above the telephone. I printed it out in large enough letters and numbers so it was clear to her, and it saved her from having to look up numbers. Maybe you could use a list like that? Answer: If you are looking to have some work done on your house, the best way to find a contractor is to call a local supplier of the material like Lee Wholesale Supply to get the number of a good quality contractor. You never know what kind of work you are going to get done by picking a number out of the phone book, but a supplier can recommend quality contractors that have been in business and are known for their quality of work. Here at Lee Wholesale Supply, we sell almost everything for the exterior of your home to the contractors or directly to the public for the handy homeowner. Whatever your exterior remodeling need, we have a very knowledgeable staff on call to help. We specialize in roofing, siding, windows, door and a variety of other products. Entry Door Purchase
The quality of the door is very important. Things we need to look for here are adjustable thresholds and deep compression seals, so the unit will maintain a seal as the house moves in the winter. Good solid jams of the correct size and depth. Solid Lock blocks in the door to add security to the system. Some doors from Therma Tru are now available in there Three Point Locking System allowing the lock to secure in three locations along the edge of the door. (A must for a double door system) As with anything making sure that the installation is correct is also very important, Tarnow Doors is a Therma Tru Certified Installing Dealer.

Latex vs. Oil
Robert Curran
Dear James: Am I better off applying a waterbased latex paint or an oil-based paint? -- Ashleigh E, Farmington Hills, MI
Answer: There are different products for use on the interior and exterior of homes. Which one you choose can depend on what has been previously applied to the surface. It is important to know what product you are trying to cover. Many times a professional can tell what is likely on the surface or you can use a test kit to detect the presence of oil based paint. Putting latex paint over oil can cause problems down the road. Latex doesn’t bond well to oil and can be scraped off with your finger nail. You can remedy this by applying a full primer down before using latex paint. I prefer to just go ahead and use oil to avoid problems. Interior trim is the ideal place to use oil based paint because it dries harder and smoother. Latex is perfect for the exterior of homes. “
Dear Robert: My home has been on the market about 30 days and I haven’t received an offer yet. How much do you think I should reduce the price? -- Debbie R. South Lyon
”
Answer: The market is starving for listings right now, and it is actually pretty rare that a property stays on the market more than 30 days right now. But it does happen. And when it does happen, you are absolutely correct in focusing on reducing the asking price. Here’s what the pricing strategy experts tell us: if the property has been on the market for 30 days and has had activity (showings) but no offers, a minimum of 5% price improvement is recommended. If the property has been on the market 30 days and there has been little or no activity and no offers, a 10% price improvement is recommended. While pricing is somewhat of a science, the human element plays a huge part in the process. Of course another 30 days without an offer will mean the market has rejected the new pricing, also and the same pricing improvement strategy will apply. Bob Curran is the President and CEO of Century 21 Curran & Christie, ranked the #1 Century 21 Office in the Great Lakes Region and #7 in the USA in 2011.
Question: What kind of Michigan rental properties do you manage? --Jake T. Farmington, MI Answer: We manage a variety of different properties here in southeastern lower Michigan. A wise property owner once told me, never own anything that takes more than an hour to arrive at. I have lived by this for years, forgoing otherwise great potential investments in places on the west coast of the state (St. Joseph e.g.) just because it takes 3 hours one way. I do divide my time between apartment complexes in Ann Arbor and Rochester Hills, with my headquarters in Farmington Hills being a multi-use office and commercial building, which many great local entrepreneurs either call ‘home’ or ‘have graduated from. We also manage houses located throughout Oakland County, and also have commercial buildings in Ferndale and Oak Park. We have no experience with trailer parks, heavy industrial buildings, high-rise commercial/residential, or professional buildings; they are specialty properties that require different knowledge; not that we wouldn’t love the chance to manage one of the above. While the buildings and the houses and the properties are all different species, they are still similar animals and the principles remain the same: keep them full, keep everyone paying, keep the lights and heat on and reinvest whenever possible
