JOE STAMELL’S
The history of America is rife with rugged men and women who have explored and tested landscapes all over the world. Here are some of their stories. • Climber Cory Richards was the first American to scale an over-26,000-foot (8,000-m) mountain in winter. Along with partners from Italy and Kazakhstan, Richards climbed the Gasherbrum II in Pakistan. • Richards and his two partners faced hurricaneforce winds and temperatures 50 degrees below zero. They performed this amazing feat without guides or supplemental oxygen. • The three men were aware of the perils they faced before beginning the journey. They were told that snow conditions would be unstable, but they couldn’t have foreseen the Class 4 avalanche that nearly killed them. • It was Simone Moro, the veteran climber from Italy, who first freed himself, then helped the other two men dig out of the massive wall of ice. • Richards documented much of the incident with a small, high-definition camera. Immediately after being freed, he documented his own reaction, a combination of relief and terror. turn the page for more!

Robert Miller
Ask The Jeweler
Dear Robert: A friend called me because her friend was in a panic about her diamond turning blue. Why is this happening?
--Julia V., Northville, MI
Answer: Diamond fluorescence is the effect that is seen in some gem-quality diamonds when they are exposed to long-wave ultraviolet light (such as the lighting frequently seen in dance clubs). Under most lighting conditions, this fluorescence is not detectable to the eye. However, if a diamond is naturally fluorescent, it will emit a soft colored glow when held under an ultraviolet lamp or “black light.” Fluorescence is not dangerous to the diamond or to the wearer; it is a unique and fascinating quality that occurs naturally in a number of gems and minerals. Robert Miller is a Master Certified Jeweler and Master Gemologist with over 35 years of experience. He is the owner of JM Jewelry in Novi. • The footage that Richards took was used in a nature documentary called “Cold.” The film chronicles their journey, the first successful attempt to climb the Pakistani peak during winter by anyone. The film played at a number of film festivals in 2011 and is being distributed by Forge Motion Pictures. • Many runners have attempted to beat the time record for completing the entire Appalachian Trail. Observers were surprised to discover that the record had been broken by a female, Pharr Davis. • Davis bested a record held by men for more than 40 years. Davis isn’t, by her own description, even a runner. She has always trained as a long-distance hiker, and her training to beat the record was the same. • Davis completed the trail’s 2,181 miles more than 26 hours faster than the former record holder. The popular assumption before her attempt was that only a faster runner could beat the record, but Davis bucked the conventional wisdom. She began each day before 5 a.m., hiking for 16 hours a day and sleeping directly on the trail. • Davis was accompanied by her husband, Ben, who served as her support crew. She reached the trail’s southern end in Springer Mountain, Georgia, a little over 46 days after she began. • “We were exploring what people thought was possible, for what was possible on the Appalachian Trail, and what was possible for a woman and a hiker,” Davis told National Geographic magazine afterward. “Records are made to be broken…The method and the approach are what matters more at the end of the day.” • Nick Waggoner was an unknown film graduate from Colorado College when he began filming “Solitaire,” a documentary about his grueling ski odyssey through South America. • Waggoner filmed over the course of two years with his three co-producers. The four men explored in far-flung locations such as the jungles along the Amazon River, the Cordillera Blanca, the Altiplano and windy Patagonia. • Waggoner filmed on foot, on skis, on boats, on horseback and even while soaring through the sky on a paraglider. He faced tough weather conditions throughout without any of the comforts of normal travel. He and his group lived out of tents in driving rain and snow, occasionally for weeks at a time. • The motley crew often hiked thousands of miles in darkness before dawn to capture sunrise in these unspoiled vistas. They scaled broken glaciers in search of breathtaking vistas
NUGGET OF KNOWLEDGE
and climbed mountains in excess of 17,000 feet. • When Waggoner arrived in South America to start production on the film, he was greeted with terrible news. His close friend and intended star of the documentary, extreme skier Arne Backstrom, had fallen and died while attempting to scale the 18,897-foot Nevado Pisco. • “Solitaire” is Waggoner’s third project with his company, Sweetgrass Productions. He recently spent a season in Hokkaido, Japan, filming another upcoming nature documentary. His acclaimed work in just three years has already won him awards, most recently at the International Freeski Film Festival in Montreal, Canada. • For Willie and Damian Benegas, seeking adventure is a family affair. This past year the two brothers collected samples of the highest living plant life on Earth. Samples were gathered from the flanks of Mt. Everest, over 22,000 feet in the air. • Willie and Damian delivered the collected vegetation to the U.S. Geological Survey, as well as to researchers at Montana State University. These samples will be used to help scientists investigate how climate change might affect our food production in the future. The brothers also brought back samples of rock near the summit of Everest for microbial study. It is hoped that these samples may provide insight into the effects of high levels of UV radiation on life at the microscopic level. • 65-year-old writer and Arctic explorer John Turk joined 26-year-old pro kayaker Erik Boomer in a 1,485-mile circumnavigation of Ellesmear Island in Canada. This was the last great adventure for Turk, but it was only one of many in a lifetime dedicated to rugged outdoor exploration. • Prior to his final trip with Boomer, Turk had completed a number of memorable climbs and has completed five separate Siberian expeditions in an effort to study Shamanic culture. • The trip required the two sportsmen to drag their kayaks across 800 miles of flat ice. Each kayak was over 13 feet long and weighed over 200 pounds. They began the trip in May, when ice had yet to melt completely, but were able to find pockets of open water after the spring thaw. • Of the many dangers Turk and Boomer faced, the most terrifying were frequent interactions with polar bears. They saw 11 on one day alone, nine of which were aggressive. ■
An explorer and adventurer from Great Britain named Ranulph Fiennes was the first man to visit both the North and South Poles. In addition to leading expeditions in locations across the globe, Fiennes broke many modern endurance records. In fact, Fiennes once competed in seven marathons in seven days. Not only that, Fiennes did each marathon on a separate continent!

WRIGLEY FIELD
Home of the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field is located in the heart of downtown Chicago and is one of baseball’s most old-fashioned and famous ballparks. • Built in 1914, Wrigley Field will be going on its 99th season in 2012 and its 97th year with the Cubs. • Wrigley Field is the second oldest major league ballpark in the United States, following behind Boston’s Fenway Park built in 1912. • Wrigley Field seats 41,160 people. • Originally named Weeghman Park in honor of the original owner Charlie Weeghman, it was designed by architect Zachary Taylor Davis and cost $250,000 to construct. It originally sat 14,000. • On April 23, 1914, the first major league game took place at the ballpark, where the Federals defeated Kansas City 9-1. • In 1915, the Federal League folded for financial reasons, making way for the Cubs to leave Cincinnati for Chicago. • In 1920, the Wrigley family, owners of Wrigley chewing gum, purchased the ballpark from Weeghman and changed the name to Cubs Park. In 1926, the name was finally changed to Wrigley Field. • The bleachers and scoreboard were implemented in 1937; the original scoreboard remains intact today and is manually operating. It has never been struck with a batted ball. • A longtime tradition is the flying of a “W” or “L” flag atop the scoreboard at the conclusion of every game signifying either a win or loss. • Wrigley Field has seen many firsts: the first permanent concession stand and the beginning of the traditions of allowing fans to keep foul balls and throwing back home runs hit by the opposing team.

• Wrigley Field has also seen many classic moments in baseball history, including the famous pitching duel in 1917 between Jim “Hippo” Vaughn and the Cincinnati Reds’ Fred Toney. • The most famous incident to take place at Wrigley Field is Babe Ruth’s alleged “call shot” in the 1932 World Series, where Ruth pointed toward the outfield just before nailing a home run into the bleachers. • Wrigley Field is more affected by harsh wind conditions than any other Major League ballpark because of nearby Lake Michigan. • The park’s nickname is the Friendly Confines, and it is the last standing Federal League ballpark. • The Cubs, often referred to as “The Lovable Losers,” are famous for never winning a World Series at Wrigley Field, yet they are still one of the most successful franchises in baseball history. • The famous “Da Curse of the Bill Goat” dates back to 1945 at the fourth game of the World Series between the Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. William “Billy Goat” Sianis and his goat Murphy were removed from the game because of the goat’s odor, and an angered Sianis placed a curse on the Cubs that said they would never win a championship. The Cubs lost game four, the World Series and have not won a World Series since. ■

Answer on page 17
• It was our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, who made the following sage observation: "No matter how much cats fight, there always seem to be plenty of kittens." • If you are a stay-at-home mom, you probably won't be surprised by a recent study that found lower levels of stress in mothers who work outside the home than in those who stay with their kids all day. • George Reeves is best known for playing the title role in the 1950s TV show "Adventures of Superman." The role was a risky one, though -- not in front of the camera, but during his numerous public appearances. It seems that fans wanted to test the strength of the Man of Steel, so they often kicked and punched him. At a 1953 appearance in Detroit, one boy pulled out his father's loaded .45 Army Colt and aimed it at Reeves' chest. By telling the boy that the bullets would bounce off his own chest and ricochet into the crowd, harming others, Reeves managed to get the boy to put the gun down. • Though unenforced (and likely unenforceable), there is a law on the books in Tennessee that bars atheists, preachers and duelists from holding elected office. • Are you lissotrichous? If you don't have curls in your hair, you are. Of course, you may not be able to tell if you are atrichous (bald), a condition that may be caused by trichotillomania, the compulsion to pull out your own hair. • If you've been married for 40 years or more, you can be pretty confident that the union will last. Only 1 in every 1,000 marriages of such duration end in divorce. Thought for the Day: “I have only one superstition. I make sure I touch all the bases when I hit a home run.” -- Babe Ruth (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Free Online Courses From Top Universities By David Uffington
Free education is as close as your computer. Universities around the world are providing free courses, and all you have to do is log on. Known as MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), free courses have allowed millions to expand their knowledge without ever stepping into a classroom. To explore what's available, go online to www.openculture.com/freeonlinecourses and scroll through the list of classes available from universities all over the world. Yale, Berkeley, Oxford, Brandeis -- they're all here. While Open Culture says it lists all available free online courses, click through the links and wander around the sites of the schools themselves. You'll find more details about what is offered and find out how to enroll, as well as the format of the presentation of the material. For example, if you're taking a class on Shakespeare from Oxford University and don't have a copy of the play, you can download an ebook version. For the class lectures, you can listen online or download the mp3 audio file. (While you're on the Open Culture site, look around in the free area for movies, language lessons, textbooks and more.) You won't be issued a degree from the universities, but more schools are finding ways to acknowledge the effort that students put in. MITx is the free online program at
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Pass the class and you can earn a certificate of completion that confirms the work you've done. Not all classes are current. Some courses consist of a set of video lectures, the video notes and the assignments that were given. Overall categories include Explore Architecture and Planning, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Health Sciences and Technology, Humanities, Arts, History, and Writing and Humanistic Studies. Classes from Stanford tend toward the technical. For example, Making Green Buildings assumes a certain amount of background in construction, but you're not left in the lurch if you have questions. Besides the videos and text of the lectures, there is a Q&A forum where you can post questions and get answers. While you can't get a certificate for completing a course, you can get a "statement of accomplishment" if you pass the class. Before you sign up for any courses, plan how you'll get the most out of this free education. The Gates Foundation has created an ebook, "The Edupunks' Guide to a DIY Credential," available for free on Open Culture.

Dear Terrance: Can I get rid of a second mortgage in bankruptcy? -- Robert N., Redford, MI Answer: Since real property values have decreased dramatically in the last several years, many people are finding that their houses are worth less than the amount of the mortgages encumbering them. In a chapter 13 case, a debtor is able to strip off a second mortgage, making this debt unsecured. In order to do so, the value of the debtor’s house must not exceed the amount of the first mortgage. The debtor can treat the second mortgage as a general unsecured claim in a chapter 13 plan by filing an adversary proceeding in the bankruptcy court to strip the second mortgagee’s lien. Once the debtor completes the chapter 13 repayment plan, the second mortgage will no longer be an encumbrance on the house, and any amount not paid under the plan will be discharged. This allows the debtor to continue living in his house, and making only one mortgage payment that reflects the true value of his real property. Ask The Insurance Agent: Veronica Murff I quit smoking five months ago after smoking about half a dozen cigarettes a day for 10 years. I want to buy term life insurance. Do I list myself as a smoker or nonsmoker on the application? -- Barry T., Farmington Hills, MI Answer: Kicking the habit is a great way to increase your chances for getting better life insurance quotes, but you probably need to be smoke-free for a bit longer before you qualify for term life nonsmoker rates. Life insurance companies vary in how they decide whether you're a smoker. But generally companies don't consider you a nonsmoker until you've abstained from tobacco for at least a year. Some companies are even more strict. The application will ask you questions about tobacco use, and it's best to answer honestly. In addition to asking about your health and lifestyle habits on applications, life insurers use blood, urine or saliva tests to get scientific data. Insurance companies tend to rely on saliva tests, also called swab tests, for younger applicants and for customers applying for lower face amounts of coverage.

Dog's Hair Isn't Growing Back By Sam Mazzotta
Dear Paw's Corner: I recently read your column on pet allergies. I have an English Setter that has had fleas and a skin problem. "Ladybird" has lost a lot of hair, and it doesn't seem to be growing back. Can you give me some tips on getting her hair to grow back? Is medicine available for this?-- Edward S. Owensville, MO Dear Kurt: Hair loss can be symptomatic of many conditions, not just in English Setters but many breeds. So if you haven't taken Ladybird to the veterinarian yet, schedule an appointment. The vet should rule out any underlying illness, including thyroidism, and can give you advice on looking for a skin or food allergy. The frequent scratching that occurs with a flea infestation can result in scratched and broken skin, sometimes leading to an infection. And,
many dogs are allergic to the "flea dust" left behind by fleas -- literally, their droppings -- and can continue having a reaction, including hair loss and frequent scratching, after the fleas are gone. A skin infection can be treated with antibiotics. An allergic reaction can be treated, in the short term, with a steroid, which will reduce irritation and swelling. Be sure to dust, vacuum and thoroughly clean your home, including bedding and furniture, to reduce the allergens -- including flea dust that was left behind -- in Ladybird's environment. Keep in contact with your vet about any improvement or lack of improvement in her condition. Her hair could take several weeks to grow back fully, but you want to make sure the source of the skin problem is dealt with.

Dear Dr. Donohue: I am a 55-year-old man who finally bit the bullet and had a colonoscopy. My doctor had badgered me to have one for the past five years. I don't have cancer. I don't have polyps. I do have diverticulosis. I didn't know I had it before the scope exam. I've never had even a twinge of pain. What is this, and what do I need to do about it? -- H.L.
Answer: A diverticulum is a small, balloonlike protrusion of the colon lining through the muscle wall of the colon and onto its outer surface. By "small," I mean that diverticula range from 0.2 inches to 0.4 inches (0.5 cm to 1 cm) in largest diameter, around the size of a pea. Their cause appears to be a lack of fiber in the diet. In places where the diet has lots of fiber, diverticulosis is rare. In North America, it's rampant. Fiber keeps undigested food from drying out. Dried food residue requires powerful contractions of the colon muscle to push it along. Those contractions also push the colon lining through the colon wall, creating a diverticulum. Diverticulosis is frequently a silent affair, not causing any troubles. Diverticulitis, on the other hand, is an inflammation and infection of diverticula. That is quite painful. It produces abdominal pain on the left, lower side of the abdomen, often with nausea and vomiting. The diverticula also can burst and release bacteria into the abdominal cavity, a serious situation. Severe diverticulitis must be treated in the hospital with IV fluids and IV antibiotics. To prevent diverticulosis from becoming diverticulitis, increase your fiber intake. Fiber is the indigestible coverings of many fruits, vegetables and grains. White flour is refined wheat -- wheat without its outer coat, the bran. Bran and other sources of fiber draw water into undigested food and make it
easily pushed along the entire length of the colon. We're supposed to get 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day. Beans, whole-grain cereals, whole-grain breads, dates, prunes, unskinned apples and pears are examples of fiber-rich foods. If you cannot get enough fiber from foods, then commercial products such as Fiberall, Metamucil, Citrucel and FiberCon can provide it for you. The booklet on diverticulosis provides more details on this common condition and its complication -diverticulitis. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 502W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dear Dr. Donohue: My doctor's nurse studied my ears with great interest the last time I was there. I asked what she was looking at. She said I had a crease in my earlobes, and it's a sign of heart disease. I looked in a mirror. I do have a crease. Does it mean I have heart disease? -- J.K. Answer: Right in the area where an earring is worn, some people have a transverse crease. At one time a fuss was made about it being a sign of heart disease. If it is, it's not a reliable sign. I have those creases too. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475.yearly in the United States. Dear Boo: Is a Liquid Diet (Such as “Juicing”) Safe? -- Joel B., Southfield, MI Answer: I am not a big proponent of “juicing” or any other type of liquid diet. I especially object to the false or misleading claims that frequently accompany these unproven and potentially dangerous nutrition tactics. Oftentimes juicing regimens are linked with the concept of detoxification, or “flushing the body of toxins.” What’s more, detox diets sometimes advocate additional techniques such as laxatives and enemas to help “cleanse” the intestinal tract. The premise that toxins build up in our bodies and that we need to cleanse our bodies by resorting to fasting or juicing regimens to get rid of them provokes fear in people and is simply not supported by scientific evidence. In fact, the body has its own built-in cleansing systems— namely, the liver and kidneys—that specialize in rounding up toxins for excretion in the urine and stool. That said, juice does have many redeeming qualities (some are loaded with vitamins, minerals and diseasefighting antioxidants) as long as they are consumed in small amounts as an addition to a healthy whole foods diet. Concord grape juice, pomegranate juice and orange juice (with added calcium and vitamin D) are a few of the highly nutritious juices out there that top my list. Just remember, though, juices concentrate the calories; one 8-ounce glass of OJ contains 110 calories and 0 grams of fiber—that’s the calorie count of two small oranges, which provide a total of 6 grams of dietary fiber! So don’t make those juice glasses a bottomless pit or you’ll pay at the scale. The take-away message: NOTHING beats the nutritional benefits of eating a plant-based diet filled with whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. Add daily exercise to the mix and you have the secret for good health and longevity, a benefit that no liquid diet could possibly provide.

Dear Dr. Zukkoor:What’s the best skin care for my aging, less elastic skin? -- Kenneth S., Clinton Twp., MI
Answer: One of the best moisturizing ingredients for aging skin is hyaluronic acid. This is a natural substance produced by the body, and it will bind molecules of moisture to your complexion. This is helpful for aging skin because hydration is the key to a soft and supple texture to your skin tone. On top of that, focus on drinking water to stay hydrated and improve elasticity in your skin! Americans receive enough junk mail every day to heat more than a quarter of a million homes. Each person in the United States receives the equivalent of one and a half trees in unwanted mail over the course of a year. To avoid some of this wasted timber, write to the Mail Preference Service of the Direct Marketing Association 11 WQest 42nd St., P.O. Box 3861, New York, NY 10163. They are campaigning to reduce junk mail by 75 percent. That's a lot of happy trees. Dr. David Zukkoor, M.D. Board Certified Physician in Internal Medicine

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) You might have to turn your Arian charm up a few degrees if you hope to persuade that persistent pessimist to see the possibilities in your project. Whatever you do, don't give up. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) A "tip" about a coworker's "betrayal" might well raise the Bovine's rage levels. But before charging into a confrontation, let an unbiased colleague do some fact checking. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Although a relationship still seems to be moving too slowly to suit your expectations, it's best not to push it. Let it develop at its own pace. You'll soon get news about a workplace change. CANCER (June 21 - July 22) A continually changing personal situation makes you feel as if you're riding an emotional roller coaster. But hold on tight; stability starts to set in early next week. LEO (July 23 - August 22) Believe it or not, someone might dare to say "No!" to the Regal One's suggestion. But instead of being miffed, use this rebuff to recheck the proposition and, perhaps, make some changes. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) You might find it difficult to make a decision about a family matter. But delay can only lead to more problems. Seek out trusted counsel and then make that important decision. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) Concentrate your focus on what needs to be done, and avoid frittering away your energies on less-important pursuits. There'll be time later for fun and games. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Although the conflicts seem to be letting up, you still need to be wary of being drawn into workplace intrigues. Plan a special weekend event for family and/or friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21) Your quick wit helps you work through an already difficult situation without creating more problems. Creative aspects begin to dominate by the week's end. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) Be patient. You'll soon receive news about a project that means so much to you. Meanwhile, you might want to reconsider a suggestion you previously turned down AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) There are still some aspects about that new job offer you need to resolve. In the meantime, another possibility seems promising. Be sure to check that out as well. PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Opening up your emotional floodgates could leave you vulnerable to being hurt later on. Watch what you say, in order to avoid having your words come back to haunt you. BORN THIS WEEK: You're usually the life of the party, which gets you on everyone's invitation list. You also have a flair for politics. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Dear Lisa: How do loud sounds damage hearing? -- Genevieve S., Farmington Hills, MI Answer: When a sound is loud enough to damage your hearing, it damages the cochlea in the inner ear. The cochlea is a bony, fluid filled sensory organ shaped like a snail shell that has tiny hair cells that represent the frequencies that we hear similarly to the keys on a piano. High pitches or high frequencies are represented on the basal end or the outermost area and are damaged first by noise-induced hearing loss because they are closer to the noise source. The low frequencies are represented on the apical end of the cochlea and are the last to be damaged by loud noise exposure. Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable so it is important to protect your hearing. A good rule of thumb to use is the following: If you have to shout to hear someone standing an arm's length away from you, you are probably being exposed to a noise that is too loud and you should be wearing hearing protection. Wearing hearing protection is sometimes a hassle, but we see people everyday that would gladly go through the hassle, just to have their hearing back.

Answer: Good oral hygiene is the best way to prevent periodontal disease. This includes brushing your teeth after every meal and before bedtime. Also, flossing at least once each day, and seeing your dentist or periodontist for regular exams twice a year are very important. Developing good habits now may save you the time and money of treating periodontal disease later. If you are interested in more information please call my office at (248) 3808020. Tidbits® of Michigan Q&A With Your Community Business Leaders
Fitness Together- Novi Owner: Boo Sadikot
Q: Boo, what is Fitness Together? A: We are a private personal training studio franchise that has been around for 18 years with about 350 studios worldwide. Our philosophy is 1 client 1 trainer 1 goal. Our focus is to get clients in the best shape of their life. Q: Are their credentials required to be a fitness expert? A: Sure. I personally have been in the fitness industry for 14 years and have all the required certifications. I am certified through the NASM, ACE, and Apex Fitness. In fact all out trainers are certified with related degrees.
Q: What is the difference between Fitness together and other gyms? A: Most gyms focus on memberships. We focus on the individual and their goals. We are committed to our client’s success. If you don’t come to the studio, we give you a courtesy reminder call to keep you accountable. We truly want to see you achieve your goals. The success stories on our website prove it: www.fitnesstogether.com/ NOVI. We have no membership programs. If you are looking for a place that is non- intimidating, that is comfortable, and that maintains the highest standard of service, come in for a free training session. We pride ourselves on having almost a “Cheers” environment. Q: What services do you offer? A: We have always been known for our one-onone personal training and nutritional guidance. We recently launched a new program called “Pack Training”. This is a new service to offer people an opportunity to train in small groups of 2-4 people. It certainly helps reduce the cost, and provides the small group setting for people that are motivated by that.
The time it takes is dependent on your specific goals. Q: What is a common myth associated with getting fit? A: The cost of being unhealthy far outweighs the cost of being healthy. Q: What activities are you involved in and how do you have fun? A: I regularly work out 4 times week and try to spend as much time with my family as possible. Q: “Boo, that is an interesting name. A: Well, it is short for Mehboob. I was born in England and have been in the United States for 15 years. Q: How does one go about go about choosing a personal trainer? A: There are three things to check for. 1. Their credentials 2. Length in Industry 3. Do call references You are investing your self and it makes sense to take a few minutes to research your investment.
Dan Egner (client)
Front: Left: Boo Sadikot Right: Chris Ransone Back: Left: Matt Sykes Right: Charles Lacasse
Q: How does one get started with Fitness Together and how long does the training take? A: We start with an initial consultation regarding your individual goals. Next we do a comprehensive fitness assessment (14 page report). This is followed up with a nutritional assessment and finally a Cardio program, before the fun begins.

Home Health Care Choices Made Easier It's not easy making medical decisions when we have no previous experience, but Medicare has just made it easier to make decisions about home health care. The "Home Health Care CAHPS Survey" results have been posted online as part of the Quality Care Finder. The QCF already lets us compare hospitals, nursing homes, dialysis facilities, physicians and Medicare plans -- and

Mold Is Hazardous to Home and Health
Q: For a few months now, I've noticed a mildewy odor in the downstairs bathroom. I keep the bathroom clean, and I even pour a cup of vinegar down the drains once a month, but the odor comes back. For now, I'm using an air freshener to mask the smell, but how can I locate and get rid of it?
-- Gaia M., Baton Rouge, LA
A: That mildew smell is most likely from mold growth. If you can't visually locate a patch of mildew or mold in the bathroom, such as in lower corners of the wall or the shower, contact a plumber. It's very likely that a water leak somewhere behind the wall is causing the mold problem. Even a small amount of mold in a home can trigger allergies or breathing problems in many people. It's also a warning signal that
now we do the same with home health care. For example, hospitals are compared for rates of readmission and deaths, and whether the hospitals use recommended treatments for serious conditions such as pneumonia and heart attack. Nursing homes can get up to a five-star rating, depending on the quality of the care. The information looks at pain control, whether patients are given flu shots, special services, and health and safety inspections. Dialysis treatment centers are compared in areas such as whether anemia was controlled, whether home dialysis is offered and what services are provided. The physicians portion of the database lets us get to know a doctor before we make an appointment. Does he or she have a medical specialty or clinical training? One benefit is learning whether a doctor accepts Medicare payments as the full amount. The Medicare plan finders allows us to search for the plan that covers the drugs we need, and compares plans based on quality ratings and costs. Home health care, the newest addition to the
water is damaging important parts of your home -- not just the drywall but the wood framing, sheathing, foundation and more. A leaky supply or drainpipe can mean water is dripping behind the walls. A plumber can inspect these pipes without causing damage to the rest of the bathroom. The plumber will then recommend the best action to take to stop the moisture damage and remove the mold. If mold is affecting carpet or wallpaper in the area, you'll need to replace those items as well. If dampness is a constant problem in the bathroom, make sure the room is getting adequate airflow, even if the original problem is repaired. An exhaust fan is fairly inexpensive and quickly removes humidity from the bathroom -- for example, after a hot shower. In many states a fan is required by building codes, and the plumber likely will recommend you install one if there isn't one already. home tip
Clean up mold with a mild detergent rather than bleach, which can irritate your lungs.

248-449-1111 ▶ Want to pump up a dying charcoal fire? Never use lighter fluid. Even if the coals look really gray, they could be hot on the inside. The stream of fluid CAN catch fire. It's too dangerous. Put new briquettes in with the old, and start those using a long stick match. ▶ "When grilling with charcoal, keep a clean spray bottle filled with plain water handy, and use it to keep flare-ups from blackening your food. When the coals have died and you're ready to clean up the ashes, mist the ashes first. It will keep them from making a dust cloud." -- U.L. in Georgia
▶ From charcoal grilling expert Kingsford, here's a great tip to use when grilling chicken: "When applying a dry rub to chicken pieces, it's often hard to keep the rub affixed, and it's even more difficult to keep the chicken's original, golden color. Try 'painting' chicken pieces with yellow mustard prior to applying the rub. Not only will the rub stay in place, your final product will be visually appealing -- without any trace of mustard flavor." ▶ When wrapping vegetables in foil packets to grill, make the seams on the sides. This way, the veggie packets can be turned over for even cooking and to avoid burning on one side. You can even label the outside of the foil in permanent marker. It won't affect the taste of the food. ▶ To cover a picnic table in windy conditions, choose a fitted bed sheet. A kid-friendly alternative is to cover a table entirely with white butcher paper, taped at the seams and secured underneath with strong tape, such as duct tape. The kids can busy themselves drawing placemats and decorations for everyone in crayon while the adults do the grilling. Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Tidbits® of Michigan Ask The Gutter Expert
Jeff Arvidson
Dear Jeff: Does my home need gutters?
-- Jake P., Troy, MI
Answer: Most homes need gutters to insure that water drains away from your foundation. Without proper water drainage, heavy rains can lead to erosion of a homes foundation or basement leakage . Wet foundations can also lead to more damages inside your home. Unwanted water, seeping into a home can result in wet drywall and carpets that can lead to greater problems involving mold. Exterior doors and windows sills are also vulernable to water damage and rot without gutters to provide water diversion. Proper insallation of gutters is important. With many options available, it is best to
Ask The

choose a seamless gutter. Seamless gutters minimize the chance of leakeage and add great curb appeal. Always choose a premium Hidden hanger system for your gutters . Many cheeper options are available , it is important to choose a premium style hanger as they will hold up under ice and snow conditions. Hidden hangers offer the advantage of being screwed into the fascia board minimizing gutters becoming loose and detached from the home. Downspouts extentions typically should be 3 feet in length to insure proper water diversion away from the home. Pitch of your gutters is another important issue . Without proper pitch water will not drain correctly and can cause back up problems that can led to overflow of the gutter. Over flow can result in fascia boards absorbing the water, resulting in rotting wood. Century gutter systems is proud to provide trained experts to install seamless gutters with hidden hangers , custom made on site, to fit your home!

Dear Zvi: I have a one-piece door now. Can I replace it with a sectional door? -- Allyson J., Livonia, MI
Answer: Yes. Your professional garage door dealer/installer can install a sectional door for you by installing track and springs to accommodate a sectional door. Depending on the construction of your garage, other modifications might be necessary. We would advise you to ask your dealer to evaluate the job prior to installation, so that any required modifications can be performed. PAINTING EXPERT James Kern
Dear James: How long does an Exterior paint job last in our local area? -- Alan B., Lathrup Village, MI Answer: That is a question I am always asked and I have a good answer for that. There are a few things it depends on. First, how much do you let your home go before you think its time? Second, it depends on who does the painting. I would say if you get a high quality paint job you will start to see the paint fading in about 5 years on the side the sun hits on your
house all day. About 10 percent of my customers paint then. The majority of my customers would be in about the 8 year mark. The paint at this point has shown its fading around the home and caulking in areas have starting opening up in spots for water to get behind. Sometimes the house has other problems that does cause damage to the paint job earlier on, but that would be caused by something else. What gives most of my customers the confidence they need to work on their home is that I can show them homes I have done over 5 years ago and, with the help of my great customers, welcoming me to use them as a referral anytime.

Ask The Home Builder Expert Compo Builders, Inc.
Dear Compo Builders: Both my husband and I are recently retired and we want to do some repair work on the exterior of our home. Our siding, brick work, patio and windows are all in need of some serious upgrades and repair as well as our deck and our paver paths. Any suggestions on what materials we should use to reduce future repairs? -- A. Chalmers, Northville Answer: Many of the homes that were built in the last 15 years used wood for the trim work and now would be a great time to replace it with Azek cellular PVC or Miratech composite trim. This will avoid future rotting and is significantly more stable while avoiding typical issues from boring insects or birds as these are impervious. These products are pre-primed and must be painted as it is a solid product and will not take stain. If you have straight siding it can be replaced with either Hardie Cement Siding or Georgia Pacific. Dutch Lapp siding depends on the profile you want to use. This also must be painted but Hardie is available prefinished in several different colors. We often incorporate two complementary colors for a two tone effect between the siding and the trim; it can add a subtle but distinctive accent to your home. For shake siding I would suggest “Nailite” or “Certainteed Cedar Impressions” which is not wood but polypropylene. These are available in several solid colors and some colors that look like aged wood, both excellent products and will provide years of maintenance free enjoyment. Windows have improved substantially in the last 20 year. If you have windows that need replacing I would suggest you look at Paradigm which is manufactured in Maine and is an excellent value. They have a solid reputation and a customer service department that can’t be beat. If you are replacing windows be sure to avoid using wood exteriors or you will be painting and repairing every 2- 3 years. There is no question that new windows can dramatically improve the look and
perceived value of your residence. If your brick work requires replacing bad brick, there are sources where you can obtain brick that matches your original brick. Bricks spall when they are too soft and porous. This permits the brick to absorb and retain too much water which then can freeze and expand, breaking away the brick surface. If you have spalled brick, remove it by cutting out the bad sections. Replace the brick and then seal the finished brick with a liquid silicone to avoid the same problem down the road. For patios and driveways, any pavers that have shifted will need to be re-leveled, cleaned and sand will need to be brought in to fill the open joints. I would also suggest sealing with a high quality urethane sealer. The control joints should be caulked with rubber matching caulk which can be cleaned and a new coat applied every 2 or 3 years. Decks that were made out of wood will ultimately have to be replaced. Today you can install a stunning and long lasting deck that will serve you for years to come. I would replace the decking with the second generation coated Trex or the second generation of the cellular PVC Azek decking. Both products are composite and can be screwed in place with stainless steel screws or hidden fasteners. One of my favorite enhancements of today’s quality decking is that they come in many different colors so custom patterns; accents and configurations can be incorporated in your design. As a builder that has completed over 1,000 custom decks, I would be happy to give you advice regarding these products and their long list of unique qualities. At Compo Builders, Inc., we put our clients first with workmanship, quality, attention to detail, fair pricing and technological possibilities that are second to none. - David Compo, President (248) 513-4170 ■ builder@jdcompo.com 24 Hour Hotline: (248) 640-1489 www.jdcompo.com Do you have a question that you would like to have answered? Dear Marty: Will new windows reduce outside noise ? -- Patty L., Northville, MI Answer: Yes, and the difference can be noticable. New wood or vinyl windows are glazed with insulated glass. Insulated glass has a dead air space between the panes of glass. The dead air space helps deaden sound as it passes through. The framing on vinyl widows is designed with open cavities that help insulate. These cavities also work to reduce noise transmission. Wood windows are natural sound barriers. The installation of new windows also adds to quieter product. Foam insulation is sprayed around the perimeter sealing out water, air, and the majority of sound transmission. This indirect sound barrier along with the window will make your home more efficient and quieter. Dear Rick: We are working with a designer and she wants to take out the drywall area above the cabinets. I know that there is some plumbing up there and I am concerned about removing that area. Is it OK to do that? -- Steve, Novi, MI Answer: Steve, the area above the cabinets is referred to as the soffit. In about 98% of the kitchens I remodel I remove the soffits. By using taller cabinets it gives the kitchen a higher and bigger appearance and gives you additional storage. If you go to a 36” high cabinet you can run a nice molding detail to the ceiling. You are correct that there is probably plumbing running through the soffit as well as possibly electric wires. Plumbers and electricians love to run their work through soffits because otherwise they would have to drill each joist to run their lines. In most cases the plumbing and electrical can be relocated. It is imperative to open up some holes to look into the soffit, before cabinets are ordered, to make sure that there isn’t a surprise lurking up there! Some of the reasons that you cannot remove the soffit is if there is a heating duct running through the soffit or if the soffit is hiding a bearing header. If your designer feels that it is possible to remove the soffits, I would listen to her since you are paying her for her advice. Removing the soffits will add cost to the project because of the demolition of the soffits, mechanicals being moved and drywall repair but the added storage and appearance are well worth the extra expense. Good luck with your remodel and let me know how it goes.

Dear What does being put on the clock mean in golf? -- Andy G., Farmington Hills, MI Answer: Being put on the clock occurs on professional golf tours when a group of players are very slow and are losing ground on people ahead of them. When they are put on the clock they have a set amount of time to hit each shot and complete each hole, if they fail to keep up they are fined. MADE IN DETROIT
Varsity Lincoln
Dear Varsity Lincoln: Why should I consider purchasing a Hybrid car?-- Alan R., Troy, MI A: For anyone interested in saving money at the gas pump and helping the environment, hybrid cars are an excellent choice. Consider the following reasons to buy a hybrid next time you are in the market for a new car. Smaller, More Efficient Engines The hybrid's fuel efficiency is increased by its small size and the use of lightweight materials. Periodic engine shut-off is another fuel saving feature of the hybrid. When it is stopped in traffic, the hybrid's engine temporarily shuts off. The engine restarts automatically when the car is put back in gear. Hybrids are powered by the combination of an efficient gasoline engine backed by an electric motor for acceleration. The electric motor is powered by batteries that are recharged automatically by recapturing the kinetic energy usually lost during braking, known as regenerative braking. When the car is slowing down, the electric motor runs backwards, acting as a generator to charge the battery. With this collection of advanced fuel efficiency features, hybrids can outperform conventional cars in several arenas. Environmental Friendliness Another reason hybrids are more environmentally friendly than conventional gas engines is that they idle less and use fuel more efficiently. The hybrid not only gets better gas mileage, it produces less pollution than other, non-hybrid cars. Some hybrids are getting 10 to 20 miles per gallon more than a regular gas engine. For example, the 2012 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is rated best it's class in fuel efficiency with 41 City MPG. They are also capable of reducing harmful emissions by 90%. Many hybrids use aerodynamic design to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency. Low rolling tires made of special resistant rubber reduce friction on the road. The high capacity, nickelmetal-hydride battery pack is reliable and available to power the hybrid when needed. The MKZ also uses the latest in power-train technology, for integrated power management that contributes to fuel efficiency.
