• Corn originated in present-day Mexico and is known also by the name “maize.” Botanically, corn is a member of the grass family. Cornstalks can grow from 2 to 20 feet (0.6 to 6.1 m) high, with the average being about 8 feet (2.4 m).

• The ear or cob is the female part of the plant and houses up to 1,000 seeds called kernels. Each ear is enveloped in a whorl of leaves called husks. Ears occur along the plant’s main stalk. The tassel is the male part of the plant and occurs at the top or end of a stalk. From the tassel comes pollen that fertilizes eggs in the ear that eventually produces the kernels. Wondering why they are called ears?

• If you think “ears” of corn are called “ears” because they stick out like human ears, you are not alone. Many people think that, but it is wrong. The term “ear” comes from an old English measurement called an ear of grain. It is related to the Dutch word, “aar” and the German word, “aehre.” Also, the Gothic word for husk of corn is “ahs.” turn the page for more!

NOW THAT"S CORNY! (continued): • About 40 percent of the world’s corn is grown in the United States. Over half of the U.S. corn grows in four states: Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Minnesota. The “Corn Belt” in the United States is typically defined as the above four states plus Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Kansas. The corn-growing region has relatively level land, adequate rainfall and rich, fertile soil. • For the last two decades Iowa has produced the largest corn crop of any state. Actually Iowa produces more corn than most countries. For example, Iowa grows about three times as much as corn as Mexico, even though the corn consumption per person there is almost three times higher than in the United States. • Approximately 90 percent of the corn in the United States is grown on family farms. Irrigation is usually unnecessary, with 87 percent of the corn grown using only natural rainfall. • There are five varieties of corn: 1) field corn, which is used for livestock feed, fuel and industrial products; 2) popcorn; 3) food-grade corn, used for numerous food products like corn bread and tortillas; 4) sweet corn, the best to eat; and 5) seed corn, grown for kernels to be used for the next year’s crop. • Most things in nature that have rows or lines tend to grow in even numbers. This comes about with cell division; one cell dividing into two and continuing evenly. Corn kernels always grow in an even number of rows. An average ear of corn has 800 kernels in 16 rows. • One of the primary uses of field corn is animal feed. Approximately 40 percent of the U. S. corn crop is used as livestock and poultry feed. • Included in this 40 percent is the production of distiller’s grain, a co-product from ethanol production that is a great supplement for animal feed. • Another use of field corn is ethanol production. In 2010, 36.5 percent of the U.S. corn crop was used to produce ethanol. Ethanol is a clean alternative fuel that is blended with 70 percent of the gasoline produced in the United States and comprises about 4.6 percent of total U.S. gasoline consumption. • Lastly, field corn is used for a variety of industrial products, including bioplastics, fabrics, crayons, compostable tableware and food containers. • Popcorn has been part of American cuisine since before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. In fact, research indicates that likely ancestors of Native Americans enjoyed popcorn before the birth of Christ. • Nutritionally, popcorn is a good source of fiber and complex carbohydrates yet low in fat and calories, making it a great between-meal snack.

Air-popped popcorn contains 31 calories per cup, oil-popped popcorn contains 55 calories per cup, and lightly buttered popcorn contains 133 calories per cup. Three cups of popped popcorn equals one serving from the grain group. • Reports in March 2012 from a study conducted at the University of Scranton indicated that the crunchy hull of popcorn is rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that prevent damage to cells and may have disease-fighting properties. • By the way, when popcorn pops, it forms two basic shapes: snowflake and mushroom. Movie theater and ballpark popcorn are snowflakeshaped because this form looks and pops bigger. Mushroom popcorn is used more for candy because it doesn’t crumble. • Sweet corn differs from other corn varieties in that it is genetically distinct and accumulates twice the amount of sugar as field corn. The sought-after taste of sweet corn is best experienced by eating it directly off the cob. The Papoon variety of sweet corn, the first variety acquired by European settlers in North America, can be traced back to the Iroquois tribe of Native Americans in 1779. • Constantine, Michigan, proclaims itself the “Seed Corn Capital of the World.” Reportedly, 20 percent of the seed corn production in the United States occurs in greater Constantine and the surrounding counties. • Food-grade corn comes generally as either white corn or yellow corn. Yellow corn is more prevalent, but with the swelling Latino population in the United States and the fact that white corn is preferred for Latino recipes (for example, Mexican tortillas), the demand for food-grade white corn is increasing. • Corn is one of the most pervasive food ingredients in the world today. Consider this list of corn-containing foods that is significant but far from complete: baking mixes, baking powders, cornbread, corn flakes, Fritos, grits, hominy, margarine, popcorn, tortillas. Consider also the many non-food items that contain corn: aspirin, cough syrups, envelopes, gelatin capsules, powders, stamps, starched clothing, talcums, toothpaste, soaps and vitamins. Corn is actually an ingredient in more than 3,000 grocery products! • There are many corn festivals across the United States, mostly in August and September. There are even some corn festivals in Canada. Probably one of the biggest and longest-running annual festivals is the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival in Mendota, Illinois. In its 65th year, the festival serves free corn that has been cooked “with .■

GATEWAY ARCH

As part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri, the Gateway Arch is the tallest national monument in the United States. At 630 feet (192 m), the arch is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. • The base width is also 630 feet (192 m). The foundations for the arch were sunk 60 feet (18 m) into the ground. It is built to withstand earthquakes and to sway up to 18 inches (46 cm) in 150 mph (241 km/hr) winds. • Opened in 1965, the striking stainless steel structure offers spectacular views from the observation room at the top. Eero Saarinen, an architect from Detroit who had emmigrated from Finland with his family at the age of 12, won the competition for the honor to design the monument to westward movement. Thomas Jefferson’s vision to spread freedom and democracy from “sea to shining sea” was the inspiration for Saarinen’s design. • The city of St. Louis was quite significant in the westward movement, considered the “Gateway to the West.” The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial is a memorial to Jefferson’s role in expanding the country to the west. The park consists of the Gateway Arch, the Museum of Westward Expansion and St. Louis’ Old Courthouse. • Construction of the Arch occurred from February 12, 1963, until the last section was put in place on October 28, 1965. The cost was $13 million. • More stainless steel was used to build the Arch than for any other project in history: Nine hundred tons (900,000 kg). The Gateway Arch weighs 17,246 tons (17,240,000 kg). • One of the most fascinating things about the Gateway Arch is the ride to the top. The two one-of-a-kind trams that go up each leg to take visitors to the observation room are amazing. Dick Bowser, a highly intelligent man with no

college degree, conceived the idea for the trams in two short weeks. • Bowser’s design had to meet the criteria to transport 3,500 people in an eight-hour day or up to 11,000 people in a 14-hour day. The conveyance system could not distort the exterior of the Arch. • Bowser’s tram system consists of eight capsules linked in tandem for each leg of the Arch. Each capsule seats five people and rotates approximately 155 degrees during the trip to the top. Each tram completes the trip to the top of the Arch and back in 9-10 minutes, including time for loading and unloading. As the capsules go up and down, the weight of the passengers helps to keep the capsules upright. When the trams are running near capacity, 400-450 passengers per hour experience the unique ride to the top of the Arch. • At the top of the Arch, the 16 windows on each side are small at 7 inches x 27 inches (18 cm x 69 cm), hinged and locked. The room is small as well but accommodates 100-160 people. The views are breathtaking, with the Mississippi River and the state of Illinois to the east and the city of St. Louis and state of Missouri to the west. • The grounds surrounding the Gateway Arch and the rest of the park were carefully designed with the buildings. Renowned landscape architect Dan Kiley worked with Dick Bowser from the beginning to make the park a reality. ■

Pastor Ron Ron Craycraft

Dear Pastor Ron: How can we pray "powerful" Prayers?

-- Cassandra W., Bloomfield Hills, MI

Answer: The storms of life will threaten to "rock your world." But when you "believe, pray, and say" God's promises "to" the storms of life -you'll rise above! (Mark 11:23.) We are living in a day when the Holy Spirit is "energizing" the power and anointing of "God's Word." We release God's power when we believe, pray, and speak His Word. Many good church-going Christians may think this sounds like some new teaching -- but Jesus taught a lot about the power of speaking His Word. (Luke 6:45.) In order to have victory over the attacks of the enemy, we must think, believe, and speak in line with God's Word. No Insurance “Back To School Special” How to Prevent Heat Injuries By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Dear Dr. Donohue: This will be my first year as an assistant football coach at the high-school level. The head coach has given me the task of preparing for heat-related injuries. It stays hot here way into October. I'd appreciate any tips you can give me. --G.O. Answer: The best prevention for heat injuries is calling off practice on hot, humid days. What exactly is a hot, humid day? If your school has a wet-bulb globe thermometer, on days when it registers 82 or higher, either call off practice or limit the work done. This reading incorporates heat and humidity. It takes two weeks for the body to acclimatize to heat. In the first few days, drills should not be demanding. Once acclimatized, the body sweats earlier and the sodium content of sweat lessens. Encourage players to stay hydrated. They should drink 16 to 20 ounces of water or a sports drink two hours before and again half an hour before practice. Players should continue to drink 8 ounces every 20 minutes. Sports drinks provide sodium. Heat cramps are the first sign of trouble. Muscles of the arms, legs or abdomen cramp. Cramping players should be taken out of practice, sit in a cool, shaded place and drink sodium-containing fluids. Heat fainting is a more serious sign of heat trouble. Such a player should be taken to an air-conditioned room, hydrated and carefully watched. This player ought not to practice the following day. Heat exhaustion is the next and is a quite serious sign of heat injury. The player sweats heavily, might be nauseated, breathes rapidly and has a fast pulse and low blood pressure. He's apt to be confused. The player is dehydrated and sodium-depleted. He must be quickly taken to an air-conditioned room, have his clothes removed and his legs elevated. Cold

HOW DO I HELP MY SON OR DAUGHTER RUN FASTER? Part Two

Great athletes make speed look effortless, so if you see one of these happening with your athlete these are areas to be addressed. So how do we correct these movement flaws? I always say you have to go slow in order to go fast. Start by taking one of the flawed techniques mentioned last week, then start slow with a corrected technique and build to higher level speed. fluids containing sodium are essential. If he's not responding to this treatment shortly, he ought to be taken to a hospital emergency department. Heatstroke is the most serious heat injury. All the signs mentioned above are present, but the skin can be dry. The player is groggy or unresponsive. He needs to be taken to an emergency room by ambulance. Clothes are removed. During transport, ice-water-soaked towels are placed under his arms, in his groin and around his neck. Immersion in an ice-water bath will be accomplished at the hospital. Dear Dr. Donohue: What can you tell me about hypothyroidism? Does taking iodine help? I hear that taking thyroid hormone is a lifetime commitment. -- C.N. Answer: Hypothyroidism is a thyroid gland that's putting out way too little thyroid hormone. All body processes slow. People become weak and are exhausted. They're cold when others are pleasantly warm. They gain weight without overeating. Their skin dries. The face becomes puffy. The heart beats slowly. Worldwide, iodine deficiency is the main cause of a sluggish thyroid gland. It is not in North America. Here, the main cause is an attack on the gland by the immune system. The appropriate treatment is supplying the hormone in pill form. It usually is a lifelong treatment, but it's not an onerous one. It's taking only one pill a day. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475.yearly in the United States. while the opposite arm rises up with a bent elbow. Watch for the arm staying close to the body as it swings forward and back (remind the athlete not to let the arm swing away or across the body). The same holds true for the leg, raise the (opposite side) knee as high as you can keeping the foot in front of the body, and then lightly striking the and letting the foot come down to a flat position. This drill retrains the body to get back into a more neutral position, which allows for quicker and more efficient motion and activation of the legs and arms. The bottom line is to spend more time on improved movement mechanics and body control. Kirk Vickers, owner of Triad Health & Fitness 24168 Haggerty Rd. Nutrition Expert Chtaini Jackson

Q: What is a Mediterranean Diet? A: The Mediterranean diet (MD) is more specifically classified as a way of eating and not necessarily a diet in the terms that most people are familiar with. The MD does not limit the person to eating any particular foods, but focuses more on eating foods that are good for us. The structure of the diet would promote the intake of fruits and vegetables in abundance, supplying half of the daily servings. Whole grains such as brown rice, oatmeal and barley are also an essential part of this heart healthy diet. Some of the other products that are unique to this diet is the large use of fish, nut and beans. Olive oil, which is a key ingredient has been determined a much better choice in preparing food than animal fats. Not only is olive oil desirable in flavor, it is also a great agent in helping to reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL). The Mediterranean diet has been studied heavily over the last ten years and the results have proven that the high consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains has significantly reduced diseases such as cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. As with any diet, remember that exercise is an essential part to include in your daily routine to get the maximum results that your body deserves.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) As eager as you are to take on that new challenge, it would be best to temper that spurt of "Ram"-bunctious energy until you have more facts to back up your decision to move. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) This is a good time for hardworking Bovines to take a break from their hectic on-the-job schedules to bask in the unconditional love and support of friends and family. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Pay attention to what you hear in the workplace. You could pick up some hints about possible changes. Meanwhile, a new infusion of creative energy sets in by week's end.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Try to be more flexible in dealing with a suddenly difficult situation, whether it's on the job or in the home. Others might have some good points to offer. Listen to them. LEO (July 23 - August 22) You might think you're not getting the royal treatment you deserve. But be carefulnot to become a royal pain by complaining about it. Be patient and allow things to work out. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) Watch that penchant for being super-judgmental at work. It might create a bad impression with someone whose decisions could determine the course of your career. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) You've been your usual busy-bee self, gathering nectar wherever you can find it. But now's a good time to kick back, relax and just enjoy smelling the roses. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) That pesky personal situation seems to be improving. But change comes slowly, so be patient. Expect someone to bring more positive news by week's end.

Wellness From Within

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21) Whoa! Ease up on that hectic pace you've been putting yourself through. Take time to recharge your energy levels before going full gallop again. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) Try to be intrigued, not intimidated, by the issues you're suddenlyfacing, and you'll be ahead of the game. Don't be afraid to demand answers to your questions. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) New associates freezing you out of their inner circle? Never mind. Put a warm smile on that friendly face of yours, and you'll soon thaw them all down to size. PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Your wise guidance helps colleagues agree to compromise and move forward. Meanwhile, there are still vital issues you need to deal with in your personal life. BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy being free with your emotions, but you also can exercise disciplined focus. You would make a fine artist. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE PERSONAL POWER OF MUSIC!

Music has a unique link to our emotions, and is an extremely effective stress management tool. It can change our mood, make us relax, and even stir wonderful memories. There are so many styles and choice. Perhaps music from your youth is what makes you tap your toes and feel better…but even if you don’t usually listen to classical music, it may be worth giving it a try when selecting the most calming music. Music performances are enjoyable, educational, uplifting, but most of all, fun! For many years, the Special Services’ Cultural Arts Division has offered high-quality musical performances in the beautiful Farmington Players Barn Theatre right here in Farmington Hills, through a special partnership with the Farmington Players. The Barn, located at 32332 Twelve Mile Road, is the ideal spot: it is intimate, comfortable, and most of all, acoustically wonderful. The 2012-13 Cultural Concert Series offers some

truly great performance experiences. All the artists featured this year are appearing for the first time at the Barn, with the exception of our perennial favorites, Blackthorn. And… tickets are very affordable: only $19 & $17, for great, topnotch entertainment. On Saturday, September 8, the series begins with Cut Time Players, an incredible group formed by Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians with the goal of making classical music “fun & personal” for everyone. Cut Time Players will be performing memorable pieces such as “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (which you will remember from Disney’s Fantasia) and “The Entertainer’s Rag”. Their lively, personal delivery and audience connection will enliven the evening. The series takes a nostalgic turn on Friday, November 2, when Magic Bus transports you back to the Woodstock era, and the fabulous music that rocked the radio waves back in the ‘60’s. Magic Bus was named “Detroit’s Best Band” by HOUR Detroit Magazine On Saturday, January 12, Peter Oprisko presents “Fabulous Frank”, a warm tribute to Frank Sinatra. Oprisko was hot/producer of the nationally-syndicated radio program “Exclusively Sinatra”, and has been called “The Rolls Royce of singers today” by Ramsey Lewis. On Friday, February 8, Metro Jazz Voices will perform “Songs to Celebrate Love” from the American Songbook.

This sophisticated, talented group will be backed by one of the best rhythm trios in Detroit. Finally, Blackthorn is back, for two nights of Irish fun, March 8 & 9. Blackthorn’s special blend of tight musicianship, and humor engages the audience with both touching, traditional Irish tunes and hilarious pub songs. All concerts begin at 7:30 pm. You may buy tickets at https://recreg.fhgov.com, or charge by phone: (248) 473-1848, or in person at the Costick Center. For more information on Cultural Arts programs, call (248) 4731859. Alcohol Pros and Cons There aren't many topics in research that have as conflicting results as the consumption of alcohol. Is it good for us? Bad? When it comes to bone density in senior women, the jury is no longer out. New research shows that moderate alcohol intake prevents rapid "turnover" of bone. Turnover is the ebb and flow of bone growth -- except that in osteoporosis there is more overall loss of bone than gain. One or two drinks a day a few times a week appear to have a significant result in stopping that turnover.

In one of the tests done by researchers, bone density was checked in women who were moderate drinkers. The women were told to stop any drinking for two weeks, at which time bone density was checked again. What researchers found was more bone turnover -- or loss -- after two short weeks. When the women resumed moderate drinking, within one day the bone turnover rate went back to normal. Their conclusion is that alcohol protects bone growth like estrogen, which is missing in postmenopausal women. However, alcohol consumption has its drawbacks, depending on the research. In a nearly 30-year study, alcohol consumption of 3 to 6 drinks per week was linked with a small increase in the risk of breast cancer. The more alcohol consumed, the higher the risk. In another study, light alcohol consumption was associated with a decrease in cancer risk, but moderate and heavy consumption showed an increase in risk. Still another study concluded that moderate

Q: What are the advantages of alternative small business financing? -- Karl P., Novi, MI A: While it is no mystery that traditional banks are very strict when it comes to small business loan financing, companies such as Key Financial who specialize in alternative financing have the upper hand by understanding the obstacles entrepreneurs have and thereby using less stringent gauges to determining fundability, such as: 1) Lower credit score criteria of 575. 2) Using current cash flow and NOT cash savings as a guide to determine just how much we will loan. 3) Saying yes to start up companies thereby encouraging small business ownership. 4) Looking more at the business and less at the business owner. 5) Crowd Funding ( this financing vehicle is in line with Congress Bill Entrepreneur Access to Capital without SEC rules . 6) SBA Express Financing 25,000 for start ups and no need for financials. 7) Equipment Financing based on equipment already in your business. If you believe we may be of help to your small business funding needs give us a call to discuss your concerns and learn how we can help you get the money you need.

MULTIGENERATIONAL TRAVEL

Q: How can AAA Travel Agents help plan multigenerational trips? A: We set up everything from airport shuttles to adjoining rooms. We can suggest tours that meet the family interests and “must see” sites and activities. Q: What makes a successful multigenerational vacation? A: Different generations will have different ideas of what they want out of a trip. We tell members to have a family meeting to gauge everyone’s wants and needs. We also advise families to come together for one meal or activity each day—whether it’s dinner or shore excursion. MoneyBits College Education With No Loans By David Uffington

If your high-school junior is top-notch college material but you fear having him or her apply to the more well-known universities because of the likelihood of being buried in student loans at the end of four years, consider this: Students at Princeton University graduate without a single cent in loans, and have since 2001. The reason is the financial assistance that's available. For more than 30 years, Princeton's main goal has been education, and it will cover up to 100 percent of a student's needs for tuition, room, board and mandatory fees. Not covered are books and personal expenses. Each family's financial situation is considered and an amount is determined that the parents will

pay toward the student's education. Financial aid from the university will fill in the rest and will include a campus job. For more information, go online to www. princeton.edu and make your way to the Aid Estimator. How about Harvard? If your student has the grades, money shouldn't be a consideration. In one year alone, Harvard will give $166 million in need-based grants. Parents with incomes less than $65,000 aren't expected to contribute, although in coming years that will change to a small percentage of income being expected as tuition. To calculate the cost of a Harvard education, go online to www. admissions.college.harvard.edu and look for the Net Price Calculator. Dartmouth has raised its family income level to $100,000. Below that amount, loans are not included in financial-aid packages. Read the fine print, however. Student health insurance and room and board are not necessarily included. The University of Pennsylvania has gone

all-grant, no-loan, as have Swathmore, MIT (for parents making less than $75,000) and Vanderbilt. Is Yale in your student's future? Beware, if you want to avoid student loans. While Yale has need-based financial aid, student loans are considered part of that "self-help" extrafees money that the student is responsible for. Go online to www.yale.edu and look for the Net Price Calculator to determine your contribution to your child's fees. To find more colleges that don't include loans as part of tuition payments, go online and search for "no loan financial aid" for more colleges with in-house financial aid. Hunt for message boards or blogs that might give a fuller picture of the financial aid that's offered at a given school. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Neatest Little Paper Ever Read.®

Ice Cream for Everyone! Like many of you, one of my favorite ways to cool off is with a bowl of ice cream -- except I prefer to make mine dairy-free. My recipes for Dairy-Free Frozen Vanilla Custard and Dairy-Free Banana Walnut Frozen Custard are delicious and healthy ways to enjoy two of America's favorite ice-cream flavors. If you don't have an ice-cream maker, follow the directions below for creating these frozen treats using your blender and freezer, and beat the heat with a frozen treat!

DAIRY-FREE FROZEN VANILLA CUSTARD • 1 1/2 cup soymilk powder • 3 1/2 cups soymilk • 2/3 cup water

• 1 1/2 cups agave or maple syrup • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar 1. In a blender, combine soymilk powder, water and soymilk until well-blended. 2. Combine the soymilk mixture with the syrup, vanilla and vinegar in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stirring constantly, cook until the mixture is thick and syrupy in consistency. 3. Pour mixture into an ice-cream maker and follow manufacturer's directions. If you don't have an ice-cream maker, use a 9- by 5-inch metal loaf pan or other medium-sized metal or aluminum pan. Place the pan in the freezer uncovered for 1 hour. 4. Stir mixture well every 30 minutes with wire whisk for the first two hours (this will prevent ice crystals from forming). After the final stirring, allow frozen custard to chill in the freezer, covered with plastic wrap, for 1 hour after the last blend before serving. Serve cold immediately, adding your choice of toppings, as desired.

DAIRY-FREE BANANA WALNUT ICE CREAM • 2 medium-sized bananas • 1/2 cup dairy-free plain or sweetened almond milk or coconut milk or a combination of both • 2 (12.3-ounce) boxes extra-firm silken tofu, drained • 1/2 cup agave nectar or maple syrup • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup raw walnuts 1. In a blender, process the bananas and almond or coconut milk until creamy. Add tofu, agave nectar or maple syrup, vanilla and salt, and blend until smooth. 2. Pour mixture into an ice-cream maker and add walnuts as directed. Alternately, fold walnuts into the mixture and place it in a shallow metal dish, such as a cake pan or 9by 13-inch pan. 3. Place pan into the freezer, stirring well every 30 minutes with a wire whisk for the first two hours (this will prevent ice crystals from forming). After the final stirring, allow the frozen custard to rest, covered with plastic wrap, in freezer for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Serve immediately. Serves 4. Ask The Auto Insurance Expert Q: How often should I contact my agency to review my auto insurance? A: You should contact your insurance agency each time your policy renews as well as any time something in your household changes (i.e. a new driver, a birthday, a new car). Your agency should welcome the call and discuss your protection needs. You need to know that your agency knows you, your needs and that they also know what's happening in the insurance industry in Michigan. The relationship between you and your insurance agency should be open and inviting.

Hornish's Fortune In one sense, it was a great weekend for Sam Hornish Jr. Returning to the scene of his greatest triumph, the 2006 Indianapolis 500, Hornish bookended a Dodge sweep by finishing second to teammate Brad Keselowski in the Indiana 250 on July 28, the Nationwide Series' first-ever visit to famed Indianapolis 500. The Sprint Cup race on the next day, however, brought frustration. Hornish has, for now, replaced the suspended A.J. Allmendinger as driver of Roger Penske's No. 22 Dodge in the Sprint Cup Series. Penske hasn't ruled out the possibility of Allmendinger's eventual return, though it seems unlikely. He would like to see Hornish establish himself as a Cup driver worthy of support. The Crown Royal Curtiss Shaver 400 (formerly known as the Brickyard and Allstate 400s) was frustrating for the 33-year-old Hornish, whose NASCAR career has been a

Nationwide driver Sam Hornish Jr. took over for suspended Penske driver A.J. Allmendinger a few races ago in the Sprint Cup series. Hornish is running for the Nationwide title with the hope he can return to the Cup series full-time. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)

disappointment. Though he won a Nationwide Series race in 2011 at Phoenix, he has never finished better than fourth (Pocono, 2009) in 113 Cup races. Hornish's best Cup finish was at a flat track. His lone Nationwide victory was at a flat track. Indy is a flat track.

"It's a little bit of the mentality of what I grew up racing," Hornish, from Defiance, Ohio, said. "I did mostly road courses, so, I mean, that's generally pretty flat. I like tracks like Phoenix, that are different from end to end, because they're what I call compromise race tracks. "You're never going to get your car perfect at both ends, so you try to work on one end where you think it's going to be more beneficial for you to get passes done, and then you kind of try to maintain on the other end. Pocono is another place that's like that." Hornish finished 16th in Indy's Sprint Cup race on July 29. He'll continue in Cup, where possible, though his first priority is winning the Nationwide championship. He currently ranks fourth in the standings, 28 points off Elliott Sadler's pace. The Nationwide Series has no Chase, so Hornish has 14 races to catch and pass the three drivers -- Sadler, Austin Dillon and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. -- ahead of him. A Nationwide championship might provide Hornish with the spark he needs to return to NASCAR's top series full-time. Monte Dutton covers motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette. Running With Your Dog By Sam Mazzotta

Dear Paw's Corner: I started my own fitness training about four months ago, and have done pretty well with daily runs. Now that my dog "Spirit" is out of puppyhood -he's about 9 months old -- I've tried to take him along. But he didn't seem too excited the first time we went running together. He stopped running and tugged on his leash back toward home after just half a mile. How can I get Spirit into running? -- Curt C., Boulder, Colo.

Q: I haven't heard much about the upcoming movie "The Lone Ranger," starring my favorite actor, Johnny Depp. Please tell me that the movie is still being made and will be released!-- Pauli A., Colchester,

Dear Gladys: You've got to work Spirit up to it, just as you had to work your fitness upward. He gave a really clear signal that a half mile was his initial maximum distance; at that point it was time to take him home. Spirit is still very young to be out running, so don't get discouraged by that first-day showing; just gradually increase the distance each day in small increments, take Spirit home, and finish your own run. Running with your dog can be rewarding, providing companionship and even a measure of security. But keep your dog's welfare in mind throughout the exercise. Heidi Ganahl of Camp Bow Wow offered some important tips for keeping your dog safe while running: --Don't feed your dog less than 1 hour before

or after running, to avoid the possibility of bloat. --Put sunblock on your dog's nose on sunny days. --Make sure he drinks plenty of water before and after the run. --Check your dog's feet after each run for injuries. --Avoid running in very hot, humid weather, as dogs can overheat quickly. --Place reflective gear on your dog and yourself if running in the evening or early morning. Windows Stuck?

313-802-5558

Dear James: If you paint my windows, will I be able to open them when the paint dries?

Solar System Installation Specials Go Green Services

Answer: I see this problem all the time. Homeowners can’t open their windows for years and just leave them closed until we come to paint their house. Usually this happens when the previous painter did not have the window open when they painted. This problem is easily fixed by running a razor blade along the sides of the seals. The bigger problem created by this is the seals won’t work like they’re suppose to and there will be a lip around the window frame that looks out of place. You can try to clean the seals, but it is very time consuming and sometimes still doesn’t work. Sanding the lip around the window frame is not an easy task either. Windows are very expensive to replace. I would be very careful on who you let paint your windows. Make sure they have the windows open and don’t get any paint on the seals. Depending on the weather, you should be able to close them 1-2 hours after having them painted. Robert Curran

Dear Robert: What is Title Insurance? -- Alexander L., Dearborn Heights, MI

Answer: According to our resources at Title One, Inc. an agent for Old Republic National Title Insurance Company, its purpose was well stated in the first advertisement for title insurance back in the late 1800s: "This company insures the purchaser's of real estate and mortgages against loss from defective titles, liens, and encumbrances. Through these facilities [the] transfer of real estate and real estate securities can be made more speedily and with greater security than heretobefore." [circa 1876] In essence, protecting purchasers against loss is accomplished by the issuance of a title insurance policy, which states that if the status of the title to a parcel of real property is other than as represented, and if the insured suffers a loss as a result of title defect, the insurer will reimburse the insured for that loss and any related legal expenses, up to the face amount of the policy. To achieve this goal, title insurers perform an extensive search of the public records to determine whether there are any adverse claims to the subject real estate. Those claims are either eliminated prior to the issuance of a title policy or their existence is “excepted” from coverage. Bob Curran is the President and CEO of Century 21 Curran & Christie, ranked the #1 Century 21 Office in the Great Lakes Region and #7 in the USA in 2011. Curran & Christie

Paint thinner is a solvent that can be reused. It is also something that requires careful disposal since it is flammable. To make it last longer so you don't have to be worried about the waste and disposal, reuse it. After you clean your paint brushes or rollers, let the paint thinner container sit for a few days. When the paint has settled to the bottom, carefully pour the thinner into a clean container. Then it will be ready for your next painting project.

Shower Head a Leaky Mess Q: I have one of those flexible sprayer shower heads that you can lift from its holder and use. Whenever I turn on the shower, water squirts from the part where the holder attaches to the water pipe, and also runs from the end of the hose where it attaches to the shower head. Do I need to replace it or can I fix this?-- Lorelei D., Atlanta A: Check the shower head attachment points for any visible damage first. A visibly cracked hose or plastic attachment piece often means the entire unit needs to be replaced. However, if you can't see any damage, you may be able to fix this with just the twist of an adjustable wrench. To avoid damaging or scratching the connector nut -- which attaches the shower unit to the inlet pipe (sometimes called a goose-neck pipe) -- wrap a soft rag around the nut. Use an adjustable wrench that can fit comfortably around the connector nut, and gently turn the nut clockwise just slightly -- one-quarter turn

Tenant Troubles? Question: What do I need to do to evict a tenant? --Larry N., Wixom, MI Answer: The first thing that you must do is issue a seven day notice, which is basically a warning letter as well as retain an attorney or you can file on your own. On the eighth day, if the tenant has not paid, you can file a "Summons of Complaint" and receive a court date for both you and your tenant to appear before a judge/ magistrate. In court, bring a ledger illustrating what is owed to you and the tenant is allowed the opportunity to defense themselves. Assuming the judgement is in your favor, this is when the eviction actually occurs. The tenant has ten days to vacant your property, on the eleventh day, you can file a "Writ of Restitution" which allows the bailiffs to put their property out 24 hours after it is served to the tenant.

Ask The Garage Door Expert Zvi Shevach

Can I Close By Hand? Dear Zvi: How do I release the door so that I can open the garage door by hand?

-- Paul S. Garden City, MI

Answer: When the garage door fully closed, simply pull the release cord down toward the floor. Make sure that you always take special caution whenever you release the garage door opener if the door is not in the fully closed position, since the door may want to slam closed when released. If at all possible do not release the garage door when open, except for emergency or security purposes and close the door with caution. at most. Unwrap the rag from around the connector nut and turn on the shower to see if the leak has diminished or stopped. If it needs more adjustment, replace the rag and gently turn the connector nut another quarter-turn. Keep in mind that turning the connector too tight may make the leak worse; that's one reason to make such small incremental adjustments. Another reason is to avoid damaging the connector nut or the seal. If you notice cracks or other damage to the shower unit, in most cases you'll need to replace the entire unit (except for some more expensive shower heads, which often offer replacement parts from the manufacturer). To replace the unit, head to the home-improvement store and pick out a shower head of your choice, along with some Teflon tape. Back home, turn off the water feed to the shower. If you can't find the nearest shutoff valve, turn off water to the house. Unscrew the old shower sprayer unit from the inlet pipe, using your pliers and turning counterclockwise to loosen and remove it. Clean away any old sealant, tape or gunky buildup from the threads of the inlet pipe. Unwrap the new shower unit and take a look at the connection and accompanying hardware. Connectors that come with a rubber washer generally need to be tightly screwed on using your pliers; connectors that

don't generally just need to be hand-tightened. Now, take your new Teflon tape. Wrap it carefully around the threads of the inlet pipe, creating a single layer around the threads from the end of the pipe to just below the end of the threads. (The tape will push upward when you screw on the new shower head, so leave a bit of space.) Press the tape into the threads with your fingers. Carefully line up the connector of the new shower unit with the pipe and screw on, turning clockwise. Use your hand to tighten the connection; if you need to tighten more, protect the finish of the connector by wrapping a rag around it and tighten in small increments using pliers. Turn on water to the shower to test the connection, adjusting slightly if needed until the connection no longer leaks.

home tip

Need to mark the location of a leak so you can find it while on the rooftop? In the attic, locate where the water is coming in a drive a 10-penny nail upward so that it pushes up the shingle above.
