Baby, it’s cold outside! As we head into the season of cold temperatures, Tidbits presents some interesting and informative facts about winter. • For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the first day of winter is the day the sun is farthest south, on either December 21 or 22. Also known as the Winter Solstice, it’s the shortest day of the year, with about 9.5 hours of daylight. • A snowflake starts out as an ice crystal that freezes around a tiny piece of dust in the air. It can be just one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join together. There are always six sides, and although two snowflakes may be very similar, none are exactly the same. The shape and form are dependent on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold weather produces very fine, powdery snowflakes, while temperatures near the freezing point cause much larger and more complex ones. The average snowflake falls at the rate of about 3.1 mph (5 km/hr) and it can take several hours for one to make it to the ground.

Tidbits® Michigan WINTRY FACTS (continued): • The Guinness World Book of Records cites the world’s largest snowflake ever recorded as one that fell in Fort Keogh, Montana in January of 1887. This giant was 15 inches (38 cm) wide and 8 inches (20 cm) thick. • Although you might think every big snowstorm is a blizzard, the National Weather Service has a specific definition of one. The storm must contain “large amounts of snow or blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph (56 km/hr) and visibilities of less than _ mile (.4 km) for at least three hours.” • Those folks who are afraid of snow are called chionophobics. Their greatest fear is of being snowbound or stranded. A forecast of a winter storm can bring on cold sweats, racing heartbeat, and panic attacks. • The wind chill factor is the temperature felt on exposed skin due to wind. The wind chill index was developed by two Antarctic explorers in the 1940s, who experimented with how fast water froze in differing temps and wind speeds. This was then compared with the rate that the body loses heat. If the temperature is 0° F (-18° C) and the wind is blowing 30 mph (48 km/hr), it will feel like the temperature is -26° F (-32° C). Skin exposed to 0° F and only 15 mph (24 km/hr) will experience a wind chill of -19° F (-28° C) can freeze in as little as 30 minutes.

• Hypothermia is a very real danger in many parts of the country this time of year. This condition occurs when the body’s temperature drops below 95° F (35° C). As the temperature decreases, the body automatically directs blood away from the skin, increasing flow to the vital organs. Since the heart and brain are the most sensitive to cold, a slowdown occurs in their electrical activity. Thinking and reasoning are affected, and the person has the desire to sleep as delirium sets in. When the body’s temperature reaches about 82° F (28° C), the heart rate substantially slows down, and if the temperature reaches 68° F (20° C) brain function stops. About half of all hypothermia deaths are people over 60 years old, with 75% of these occurring in men. • It’s been a long time since the record for a single day’s snowfall was set in the United States. Back in December of 1913, Georgetown, Colorado received 63 inches (1.6 meters) in one day. Canada’s record is much newer – 57 inches (1.45 meters) fell in Tahtsa Lake West, British Columbia in 1999. January of 1911 was a record-setting month in
Tamarack, California – 390 inches (9.9 meters) of snow in a single month! Valdez, Alaska is the snowiest place in the U.S., averaging 326 inches (8.3 meters) a year. • Bethel, Maine’s claim to fame is tall snow creatures! In 1999, the community planned for five months and labored 15 days to create Angus, a 113’ 7” (34.63 meter) tall snowman, the world’s tallest, overtaking the previous record set by the citizens of Yamagata, Japan, of 96’ 7”. Nine years later, Bethel rivaled their own record with the world’s tallest snow woman, a 122’ 1” (37 meters) creation named Olympia. Olympia sported eyelashes made from skis and lips fashioned from bright red painted tires. Her arms were crafted from pine trees. • Canadians are experts at making snow angels. In 2004, students, parents, and teachers from 60 schools in the London, Ontario district hit the ground to create 15,851 snow angels simultaneously. In 2011, 22,022 folks in 130 separate locations in Nova Scotia produced the most angels in multiple locations. • Chamonix, France hosted the first Winter Olympics for 11 days in early 1924. Sixteen nations sent a total of 258 athletes to “The International Winter Sports Week” to participate in 16 different events. Finland and Norway took the majority of the 43 medals, Norway with 17 and Finland, 11. The United States took home four medals, and Canada took home one, the gold for hockey, the first of a streak. Out of the first seven Olympic winter games, Canada took the gold medal in hockey six times. • Squaw Valley, California was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and the skiers were more than a little nervous as the competition approached. The reason? There was no snow! A local Native American tribe, the Piute, were recruited to do a “snow dance,” and a miraculous storm produced the snow needed to save the Games. • More than 150 people are killed in the world’s avalanches each year. Although many are small slides of dry powdery snow that don’t create much damage, when large slabs of snow loosen from a mountainside, they can advance down a slope at speeds of 80 mph (130 km/ hr) within five seconds. About 93% of those caught in an avalanche can survive if rescued within 15 minutes. Just 30 minutes later, that survival rate drops to 20%-30%. After two hours, the rate is almost nil. ■

CHICHEN ITZA
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is home to the ancient ruins of the most famous Mayan city, Chichen Itza. Here are some enlightening facts about this site, named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. • One of the largest Mayan cities, Chichen Itza covered an area of at least 1.9 square miles (5 sq. km). It was an active urban center of the Mayan empire from 750 to 1200 A.D. • The ancient Mayan civilization displayed brilliant mathematical and astronomical skills. They were keen observers of the sun, moon, planets, and stars, even predicting solar eclipses from their state-of-the-art observatory, El Caracol, which still stands at the site today. • The most familiar structure at Chichen Itza is the Kukulkan Pyramid, also known as El Castillo. This 98-foot (30-m) tall ceremonial temple is a specimen of this civilization’s development of the 365-day calendar. It has 365 steps rising to the top, with each of its four sides containing 91 steps and the top platform making the 365th. Enormous sculptures of a serpents’ heads are at the base of the pyramid on the northern staircase, the principal sacred path to the top. The temple is geographically positioned so that twice a year, on the spring and autumn equinoxes, at sunset, a shadow falls on the pyramid that makes it appear that the serpent Kukulkan is making its way down the stairway. Seven interlocking triangles form a serrated line that resembles the serpent’s tail. • El Castillo was not the first temple to occupy the site. Built sometime between 1000 and 1200 A.D., it was constructed on the foundation of previous temples. Archaeological digs in the 1930s uncovered another staircase under the north side of the pyramid, and continuing the dig, found another temple buried below. • Near the pyramid is a large ball court, 554 feet (168 meters) long and 231 feet (70 meters) wide. It was here that Mayan men played pok ta pok, a game in which players hit or threw a 12lb. (5.4-kg) rubber ball through a hoop mounted high on the wall, 23 feet (7 meters) above the ground. Archaeologists believe the losers were put to death. • Nearly everyone has heard the Mayan prophecy of the end of the world occurring in December
ONE Company Does It ALL 0LFKLJDQ
of 2012. The prediction is that the great warrior serpent Kukulkan will rise from the ground under the ball court and end the world on the 22nd of the month. • Very large gatherings were held at the Temple of the Warriors, an enormous complex with a large stepped pyramid, four platforms, and 200 carved columns. Thousands of artifacts have been recovered from the area, including gold, carved jade, pottery, obsidian, rubber, flint, and human skeletons. • It’s evident that human sacrifices were part of the culture. Chichen Itza, which translates “mouth of the well,” was settled around two wells, one a sacred place, and the other for everyday use. Large quantities of bones and ceremonial objects have been recovered from the sacred well during excavation. • About 1.2 million tourists visit Chichen Itza every year. Until 2006, visitors were allowed to walk through the buildings’ ruins and climb the pyramids. However, after a woman fell to her death from El Castillo that year, people are no longer permitted on the structures. ■

BRUSH TWICE!
Dear Dr. Colbert: How many times a day should I brush my teeth? -- Jaden L., Farmington, MI Answer: The American Dental Association suggests that every one should brush their teeth at lease twice each day. There is some research that indicates that brushing once a day is sufficient to disrupt the formation of plaque that feeds the bacteria that cause decay. By only brushing once a day may not be enough for some people, depending on factors such as their diets and the efficacy of their brushing technique. American Dental Association also recommends you use fluoride toothpaste. Approved dental

products will have the ADA Seal of Acceptance. In addition you need to your toothbrush every three or four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth. Finally the American Dental Association recommends that you speak this with your dental hygienist who can help you build an oral care plan that meets your individual oral health needs and will be able to make a recommendation appropriate for you.

Trigger Finger Not a Cowboy Disorder By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Dear Dr. Donohue: Three or four months ago, the ring finger on my right hand started making popping noises when I bent it. Now it’s still doing that, and it catches in a bent position from time to time. I work as a carpenter, and I can’t afford to take time off. What do you think this is? --R.B. Answer: My guess is trigger finger. The tendons that bend the fingers travel from the forearm into the palm and then onto each finger and the thumb. On their way to the fingers, a sheath of tough tissue encircles them. Repetitive movements of the fingers irritate the protective tendon sheaths, and they swell. The swelling squeezes the tendon, and the popping noise you hear is the tendon freeing itself from its swollen sheath. That snapping noise sounds like the noise heard when cocking a gun’s trigger. As time goes by, the finger might become locked for some time in the bent position. You don’t want to hear this, but rest is essential to permit the tendon to move smoothly. If you must work, padded gloves afford some protection for the finger. Gripping a tool like a hammer is particularly hard on the tendon and its sheath. Tools with a larger-than-normal handle are less of a problem. The best protection is wearing a metal splint so that the finger can’t move. Your doctor can give you a cortisone injection into the problem area, and that often reduces the swelling quickly. You must rest your finger after the injection for at least three days. If two injections fail to free the finger, then you need to consult an orthopedic surgeon for an opinion on surgical release of the tendon. Dear Dr. Donohue: This past summer, I got the shock of my life at a family get-together. My
Ask Your Sport Performance Expert Kirk Vickers WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE MY GOLF GAME? Now that the clubs have been put away for the season, it’s time to get serious about improving your golf game. Here are three simple movements that will help you improve your game. #1 Perform a long lunge with your legs. Keep both feet pointing straight ahead as you stretch your legs forward and back as far as you can. Slowly drop your back knee down to the floor creating a good stretch in the back quad and hip flexor, as well as the front quads and hamstrings. Keep the knee on your front leg behind your toes keeping the load in your hips and not your knees. Remember we want to feel stretch not pain. Finally you want to reach your arms straight up overhead and then reach back as far as you can. Hold this movement for 15-30 seconds. Repeat with the other leg. Do this 2-3 times for each leg or until you feel fatigue.
cousin, whom I hadn’t seen in 10 years, has bulging eyes. Her mother -- my aunt -- told me it was due to a thyroid problem. I’d never heard of a thyroid problem affecting the eyes. Does it? -- G.D.
Answer: It can. An overactive thyroid gland can lead to deposits of material in the eye sockets, which causes the eyes to protrude. There are treatments for this complication of hyperthyroidism. I’m sure this cousin is under the care of a thyroid specialist and an ophthalmologist. The booklet on thyroid disorders explains the many conditions arising from a malfunctioning gland. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 401W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dear Dr. Donohue: Can hair grow on the lips if a person shaves very close to the upper and lower lips? Some informed individuals say no. -- L.G. Answer: Never in my life have I seen hair on people’s lips. Lips have no hair follicles. You even could shave the lips if you felt so inclined (but please don’t try this), and hair would not grow on them. If you have evidence to the contrary, let me know. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. #2 Sit on the floor with your knees bent and hold one of your clubs with hands about shoulder width apart with arms and club straight out in front of you. Next rotate your trunk and shoulders as far as you can. Then touch one end of your club to the floor and hold for a 5 count. Then repeat the same movement in the other direction. Do this movement 10-15 times each side, or until you feel fatigue. #3 Stand with feet pointing straight ahead and holding a 3-5 lb weight. Keep arms straight and move arms through a diagonal motion (start from hip and raise arms across the body lifting arms overhead to the opposite side). The motion should look like one half of an X. Repeat this pattern 1015 times then repeat on the other side of the body. Keep your hips neutral and stable, without rotating your hips. The exercises/movements should be done 3-4 times per week depending on your level of fitness. They should also be done pain free. Air Travel Without the Baggage Air travel isn’t much fun anymore, and getting through the airport is the worst of it. Between the crowds, the TSA rules and dragging heavy luggage, some of us just want to stay home and not bother. There is a way, however, to take care of at least one of the problems with air travel: send your luggage early. UPS, FedEx and DHL all will pick up your luggage at your home and ship it to your destination for you. UPS, for example, has specially designed boxes to hold your
ARIES (March 21 - April 19) Your work on a recent job assignment is impressive and is sure to be noticed. Meanwhile, expect to receive news about an upcoming holiday event you won’t want to miss. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) Saving the world one person at a time is what you were born to do. So accept it when people ask you for help, especially during the holiday season. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Now that you’ve resolved all doubts about an important decision, you can surprise a lot of people by defending your stand with your strong and well-reasoned arguments. other performances, in the Live and Local Talent Show, at the Costick Center. Stressed over holiday shopping? Stop by the Holiday Shopping Expo at the Costick Center to find a gift for everyone. Vendors will be selling crafts, jewelry, toys, and treasures, on December 7 and 8. After you purchased gifts, sit down to Breakfast with Santa, at the Longacre House, on December 8 or 15. Children can share their wishlist, take photos, and receive a special gift. Don’t waste another minute! Sign up today, as Santa can only visit with so many children. Some of nature’s beauties shine best in winter! Head to the Farmington Hills Nature Center and bring out your creative side with the Natural Wreath Workshop on December 15, building crafts using items found in Heritage Park. Nothing spreads holiday cheer like listening to a concert. suitcases. As with anything else, there are both plusses and minuses to using this service. The benefits: --No standing in line only to be told that your bag is overweight and will cost even more. --No lost bags at the airport. --No chance of thieving airport personal going through your suitcases and stealing things or at least rummaging around. --Less chance of damage to your bags. --No wasted time at baggage claim and then pushing through the crowd to pull your luggage off a moving carousel. --No wrestling with luggage through the airport or onto the hotel bus or into your rental car. The downside: --The cost. It can be expensive to use a service to get your luggage to your destination so it’s there when you arrive. But it can be a life (or back) saver if dealing with luggage in crowded airports is a hassle for you.
stirs your need to nurture everyone from the family cat to great-grandma. But don’t overdo it, especially with teens, who like to feel grown up. LEO (July 23 - August 22) Enjoy basking in the warm love of family and close friends. But don’t fall into a prolonged catnap yet. There’s still much to do before you can put up your paws and relax. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) Avoid pushing others to work as hard as you do on a common project. Instead, encourage them to do their best, and they might well reward you with a pleasant surprise. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) Like the sensible Libra you are, you no doubt started your holiday shopping already. But be careful to keep within your budget. Shop around for the best buys. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Love and friendship remain strong in your aspect over the next several days. This is a good time to develop new relationships and strengthen old ones.

Business & Tax Expert Aaron Sanders, Jr.
Q: Are there are any small business loans that I can qualify for before the end of this year? -- Penny R., Southfield, MI A: Yes, during this holiday season we are providing short-term loans from 25,000 to $150,000 to small businesses that can’t qualify for bank loans. Big banks approved 14.8% of small-business loan requests in October, down from about 46% before the economic downturn. Businesses typically must have sufficient collateral, sterling credit scores and strong cash flow to get loans from large banks which is hard to meet in the post-recession economy. Many banks find it’s not cost-efficient to even review modest-size loans. There are alternatives. Businesses that don’t have enough collateral to get bank loans but sell to other businesses have long turned to factoring companies. They purchase businesses’ sales invoices — or accounts receivable — at a discount, providing them instant short-term financing at effective interest rates of about 30%. About 12 years ago, merchant cash advance lenders began lending money in exchange for a share of future credit card sales, at effective interest rates of 30% to upwards of 100%. That helps retailers, for example, that don’t have sales invoices. Cash-flow lenders like Key Financial Services, funding an even wider pool of very small businesses, including dentists or plumbers that may not accept credit cards. About 65% of loans this year to businesses with one to 10 employees are unconventional — including factoring, merchant cash advances and cash-flow lending — up from about 25% two years ago. Are Tours Best? Q: What types of tours are popular today? A: People assume all tours use motor coaches, but many use a combination of travel modes, from railroad to boat. Specialized tours, such as culinary or religious tours are increasingly popular. Q: Do any tours make it possible for travelers to be independent, or to customize a trip? A: Many do. On some, you spend a half day with the group and explore on your own the rest of the day. Another example dinearound programs in Italy. You get a list of recommended restaurants at each stop and decide where to eat on your own. Q: What are the benefits of going on a tour? A: Tour guides are helpful in hard to navigate countries--especially where English isn’t spoken. Also, guides have insider access-such as being able to put your group in a priority line at the Louvre, so your wait is minimal. Ask the Travel Agents: Kris Murphy, Nancy DeGroat (not pictured) and Debbie Adoryan.

We are a debt relief agency. We help people file for bankruptcy under bankruptcy code.
Ask Your Debt Relief Expert Lyle Lieberman
Q: What is the Automatic Stay? A: If you haven’t filed or had a case dismissed in the last year then when you file for bankruptcy, you receive immediate protection from creditors through a special court order known as the bankruptcy automatic stay. Think of it as all your creditors and debts going into limbo. Your creditors must stop collection efforts. They must immediately stop foreclosures,
repossessions, lawsuits and wage garnishments. Creditors are no longer allowed to contact you in any form, phone, mail or email. The court may grant a creditor “relief from the stay” if the creditor can show that the stay does not give them “adequate protection” of their secured property. Usually the creditor is asking for a return of property, be it a boat, car or real estate. In most cases it is property that you have already said you want to return. In order for the creditor to take it back they have to ask the court to allow them Relief from the Automatic Stay. The automatic stay stays in effect throughout the life of your bankruptcy. If you have more questions, please feel free to call us. 29548 Southfield Rd • Suite 100 Southfield, MI 48076

When do I need an oil change? How do I choose the right type of oil? --Karl J., Farmington, MI
Safe Way Home LLC.
The first thing you need to remember is that you want to get your oil changed before sludge starts to form. Also, remember that sludge is one of the top enemies of your engine, so you want to take action before sludge takes over. The timing of oil changes can vary depending on the type of vehicle you drive, where you drive, and how you drive. Your vehicle manufacturer has done tons of rigorous testing to help determine the timing between oil changes and the proper oil. All of this information can be found in your vehicle owner’s manual or you can easily stop by and we can help.

Curran & Christie Homestead Exemption Changes
Dear Robert : I heard there were some changes in Homestead Exemption filings this year. What exactly happened? --Dan B., Livonia, MI Answer: According to my sources at the Michigan Association of Realtors, On May 30, 2012, Governor Rick Snyder signed Senate Bill 349 into law. Sponsored by Senator Dave Hildenbrand (R-Lowell) this new law created two Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) filing dates; one on June 1st, and the other on November 1st. Additionally, this legislation allows bank-owned properties to retain their PRE so that buyers can qualify at the lower rate of taxation. The legislation, which took effect this year, moved the former May 1st PRE filing deadline to June 1st of this year. So now, if a homebuyer purchases a Principal Residence and closes on or before June 1st, they can take advantage of a significant tax break by filing for a Principal Residence Exemption. If, however, they close AFTER June 1, they have the NEW OPPORTUNITY of filing on November 1st. This allows for tax relief in those communities that still collect a portion, if not all of their nonhomestead mills, on the December tax bill. There are many additional changes affecting homestead taxes and savings on purchases of foreclosed properties also! Question: Will the landlord have to pay for property repairs? --Lucy H., Warren, MI Answer: Now THAT is literally the $64,000.00question. Property repairs can be extremely costly, and we’re not talking about the ones the insurance companies pay for, either. We are talking about the ones that have to be done absolutely positively and without a shadow of a doubt by either you or your tenant. 1. Put in all your property leases the extent to which the tenant will be responsible. Example: In your house leases, make the tenants responsible for the first $xx of every repair during their lease term. 2. Limit landlord exposure. Example: In your commercial leases, make the tenant responsible for everything other than roof and walls (and make those exterior only as well). 3. Require tenant to upkeep all maintenance and require a separate securtity deposit. Example: Tenant is required to powerwash and stain exterior decks and other ‘perishable’ surfaces;failure will result in forfeiture. The most important aspect of all of this is propertly written leases. LEGAL PROFESSIONALS familiar with YOUR BUSINESS will save you in the short AND long runs. too many of us rely on boilerplate leases, which are generally alright, however, don’t get stuck with the answer to the $64000 question being: YOU PAY!
