For most of our time on earth, humans walked around stinking. Deodorant is a relatively new invention, and Tidbits tells the story. THE ARMPIT • To understand antiperspirant, you must first understand sweat. Sweat does not gush out of the pores. It hangs in the opening like a drop of water in a faucet. What finally pulls the sweat out is an electrical charge. A bead of sweat has a negative electrical charge. The surface of the skin has a positive electrical charge. The positively charged skin yanks the negatively charged sweat out of the pores. Enter antiperspirant. Aluminum chloride is the active ingredient, and it has a negative charge. The negatively charged aluminum shoves the sweat back into the body, just like two negative ends of a magnet move each other around. The sweat is re-absorbed by the body and the skin stays dry. • Deodorant is another story. There are bacteria living in a typical armpit, which is warm and moist. The ammonia waste products produced by the bacteria cause the odor. (Sweat is odorless.) Deodorants contain insecticides and bactericides that wipe out the entire arm pit colony— temporarily, at least. When the anti-microbial agents wear off, the bacteria move in again, journeying from the shirt or other parts of the turn the page for more! body.

RACHEL CARSON
• Rachel Carson was born in 1907 on a small farm near Pittsburgh. She began writing at an early age and her first story was published when she was 11. She studied marine biology, zoology, and genetics at Johns Hopkins University, earning a master’s degree in 1929. She intended to get a doctorate but when her father died suddenly she was forced to support her mother. • She got a job working for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries writing weekly educational radio broadcasts about aquatic life. The radio spots were very popular, and Carson began to submit articles on marine life to various newspapers and magazines, where they were well received. • She took the civil service exam in 1936, and became the second woman in history to be hired by the Bureau of Fisheries for a full time position as an aquatic biologist. • In 1937, she suffered a set-back when her older sister died, making her the sole breadwinner for her mother and her two nieces. Later that year, an essay she’d written describing the ocean floor was noticed by editors at Simon & Schuster, who asked her to turn it into a book. The result was Under the Sea-Wind published in 1941, which was critically acclaimed while also being a commercial flop. • Flop or not, that book resulted in Oxford University Press publishing her second book The Sea Around Us in 1950, which remained on the New York Times Bestseller list for 86 weeks. The success of her second book led to the republication of her first book, which then also hit the bestseller lists. The financial security allowed Carson to quit her job and concentrate on writing full time. • In 1953, her third book The Edge of the Sea was published by Houghton Mifflin. • In 1957, tragedy struck her family again when one of the nieces she raised died suddenly, leaving a 5-year-old son, whom Carson adopted and raised. • A friend of hers complained about indiscriminate spraying of pesticides that were being used in

The pesticides ran into lakes, where they affected other wildlife. Her friend urged Carson to speak out against uncontrolled use of chemical pesticides such as DDT. Carson devoted the rest of her life to this issue, researching and writing about ecological damage and human sickness caused by over-use of pesticides. • She began working on a book called Silent Spring, now remembered as her masterpiece. At the same time, another tragedy struck, as she found she had malignant breast cancer. She was in a race against time to finish the book before she died. • When the book was released, it was chosen for the “Book of the Month Club” and was serialized by New Yorker magazine, which brought it to the doors of millions of Americans. Chemical companies launched a huge smear campaign against the book, which backfired when the publicity sent sales of the book soaring through the roof, increasing public awareness of the problem. • In one of her final public appearances before her death, Carson testified before President Kennedy’s Science Advisory Committee, which backed her claims. She received many medals, honors, and awards before she died in 1964 at the age of 56. ■

What is a home health agency? Answer: Home Health Agencies can come in many different shapes and sizes. There are certified agencies (like Interim) that have a specific set of guidelines they must follow and are governed by CMS (The Federal Government), and or by an accrediting body (CHAP, ACHC, JHACO, or by their State). Michigan is a non licensed state meaning that there is no license necessary to open and run a home health agency. There are also non certified agencies that provide care on a non certified basis (Not certified through the government or an accrediting body). These agencies are usually smaller and often only provide non skilled (No Nursing or Therapy) services. Do you have a question that you would like to have answered? Email Editor@TidbitsMI.com.

A recent study in the magazine “Atherosclerosis” indicated that a certain bacteria seen in severe forms of gum disease is associated with a higher risk of heart problems. There is nothing wrong with being cautious, and a simple test of your saliva can rule out the presence of this type of bacteria. For more information on this test, contact our office. Answer: Dental implants are a wonderful way to replace missing teeth when certain conditions exist but are not for every one. Many factors such as your overall general health and the length of time you have been missing your teeth must be considered. Spinal Stenosis Often Cause of Back Pain By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Dear Dr. Donohue: You have no idea how painful spinal stenosis is. Only oxycodone works. My doctor is afraid that I will become addicted. I am 75. I would rather die an addict than a person in constant pain. A surgeon told me it was too dangerous to operate unless I am in constant pain. Can you help? -- B.A. Dear Dr. Donohue: I read your article on spinal stenosis. I am 82, in good health, but plagued with back pain. My daughter, a nurse at a university hospital, had me see a neurosurgeon there. He suggested a microsurgical procedure that took about three hours. I was discharged with a small bandage. I am now more than two months postop, and my back feels better than it has in years. People with spinal stenosis should consider this operation. -- M.R. Answer: Spinal stenosis is one of the most frequent causes of back pain. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain. It runs from the neck to the lower back. It’s only as thick as your little finger. An eraser dropped from 12 inches onto it would smash it beyond repair. It, therefore, needs protection. Nature has encased it in the back bones (vertebrae) through a tunnel that runs the length of the spinal column. Narrowing of the tunnel is called spinal stenosis. The narrowed part compresses the spinal cord and is quite painful. The narrowing comes from bone spurs, arthritis changes or thickening of back ligaments. Physical therapy, through strengthening back muscles and stretching thickened back ligaments, often lessens pain. Pain medicines can be used liberally. Injection of cortisone into the spinal canal (epidurals) is another way to ease pain and compression. M.R.’s suggestion of surgery bears consideration, especially his comments on microsurgery, where a
half-inch incision allows the surgeon to spread back muscles and other tissues so the surgeon can home in on the area of involved stenosis. A hollow cylinder is inserted through the spread back tissues, and special instruments allow visualization of the area with the ability to remove the compression. It’s something that B.A. ought to consider with the constant pain she endures. The booklet on back problems deals with some of the more-common back conditions and their treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dear Dr. Donohue: My wife has taken blood pressure medicine for many years. She’s now 66. Her doctor put her on a new medicine that has her pressure at 125/65. It’s never been that low before. Is that too low for someone her age? -- L.W. Answer: Does your wife complain of dizziness, especially upon standing up? If she doesn’t, then her pressure isn’t too low. Ideal blood pressure is lower than 120/80. It’s true older people don’t always tolerate a sudden drop in their pressure, even though the pressure might be in the normal range. I don’t consider your wife to be “older.” You’d better not either. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475.yearly in the United States. A: Before selling your treadmill here are a couple of tips you may want to try first. The first tip; check your shoes, if your shoes are old and worn this can promote knee pain. To know if your shoes are worn out, you should first look at the bottoms of your shoes. If you see an obvious wear pattern it’s time to replace your shoes. You can also feel (with your hand) the inside sole of the shoe. If you feel a significant wear pattern on the inside you should also replace your shoes. The next tip is to be aware of your running or walking technique. When walking or running on a treadmill notice if you are aggressively toeing in or toeing out, if so this could be causing the knee pain. Practice keeping your feet straight when walking or running on the treadmill. The next tips to try are adjusting the incline on your treadmill to 2.5 or 3.0 and increase your stride length by an additional 4-6 inches so that you strike the heel of the front foot first. Also keep your speed at a rate that you can consistently maintain your stride length and heel strike. Before selling that treadmill be sure to try the tips described above, you might just find that you can enjoy the use of your treadmill pain free. Creating ‘That’ Dog By Sam Mazzotta
Dear Paw's Corner: One thing I’ve dreamed about with owning a dog is being able to bring him to coffee shops, markets, parks, you name it, and have him be calm and relaxed. You know the type: the big shaggy dog leashed to a lamppost being petted by neighborhood kids, with no problems. Well, my puppy is a good-natured Lab mix, but a little hyper. Will “Raven” ever be that dog?
© 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
-- Joe K., Portland, Maine
Dear Joe: As long as you make it a priority to train Raven well in basic obedience both on and off the leash, socialize him to humans, children and other dogs, you have a very good chance of having “that” dog ... that cool city pooch you can take almost anywhere. Strike up a conversation with other dog owners who have a well-behaved pet with them, and find out how they achieved it. Search for puppy training or socialization groups in your area, through local papers or on websites like Meetup.com. If you’re having trouble getting Raven to follow commands or be calm on the leash, look into group or private dog obedience training. If Raven is still young and hasn’t had all his initial shots yet, avoid visiting dog parks until the vet says it’s safe to do so. Don’t venture out too far or too long: Gradually increase your walks around the city, so that he looks forward to exploring without getting exhausted or stressed. While you’re out, check with shops and cafes that you pass to find out which ones are pet-friendly and which ones aren’t. Send your questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. Did you know mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas don’t? Find out more in my new book “Fighting Fleas,” available now on Amazon. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ve set a fast pace for yourself. But as you approach your goal, you might want to slow down a bit in order to take time to reassess your situation and make changes while you can. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Patience continues to be a virtue for the Divine Bovine. So as eager as you might be to get things moving, remember that time is on your side. Make good use of it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) There’s a wee bit of uncertainty in the early part of the week. But things clear up as more facts come to light. Spend quality time this weekend with family and friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An old friend’s return could open new possibilities for both of you. But don’t let yourself be rushed into anything. There could be some factors you haven’t yet explored. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This week offers a challenge you’re raring to take on. And while eager to get started, do so slowly so that you can focus those sharp Cat’s Eyes on every detail. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Put your skepticism aside and listen to advice from colleagues who’ve been where you are now. What they say could be helpful as you get closer to a decision. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family matter might again require your reassuring touch. Handle it, as always, with kindness and fairness, even if some of your kin prove to be especially difficult. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your ability to tackle even the most intricate details of a project is likely to impress some very important people. A relative shares news later this week. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The Archer’s aim might be focused on the big picture this week, but don’t overlook checking for those details you might have missed. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might feel awkward asking for assistance, but who would refuse the charming Goat’s request? Do it, then go ahead and enjoy a musical weekend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Pour some cold water on that simmering misunderstanding before it boils over. The sooner things settle, the sooner you can move ahead with your plans. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re in a highly productive period, which you feel can go on forever. But you could be courting exhaustion. Take time out to relax and restore your energies. BORN THIS WEEK: You can combine a sense of adventure with a penchant for practicality. Have you considered a travel-related field? (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Ask Your Auto Insurance Expert Do I Need Health Insurance?
Q: Why does my auto insurance care if I have health insurance? -- Gary M., Southfield, MI A: Your auto insurance in Michigan comes with the benefit of unlimited medical coverage in the event of an injury due to an auto accident. Lower rates are available if you have appropriate health insurance coverage that coordinates your auto insurance with your health insurance. Medicaid, Medicare or a Medicare supplemental policy will not cover auto-related injuries, so primary medical needs to be purchased on the auto policy. If you have health insurance that coordinates, they become the primary payer for any injuries resulting from an auto accident. Your auto insurance would then pay for expenses not covered by the health policy. If you have health insurance, check with the company to make sure your health insurance coverage will pay for injuries related to a car accident. 2013 Lincoln MKX – BLIS
Mark Ambroziak
Dear Varsity Lincoln: I was looking over some information on a 2013 MKX, and was interested in learning more about BLIS. What is that, and is it standard or an option? - Max K, Wixom, MI
Answer: BLIS stands for Blind Spot Information System. A motorcycle is in your blind spot. Without a little assistance, you may not know it’s there. Lincoln MKX sends out radar to help detect these drivers, then flashes a visual alert in your sideview mirror,1 When all is clear, you’re ready to proceed. BLIS* (Blind Spot Information System)2 A vehicle crosses behind you as you back from a parking space. You may not see it, but your vehicle can detect it. An icon glows in your sideview mirror, and an audible alarm alerts you. Don’t back up. Watch in your rear view camera,2 and you’ll see the passing vehicle. Cross-traffic alert2 Keep moving forward, even in Reverse. The graceful approach: Glance at your 8” color LCD screen. A vivid image of the scene behind you – projected from a tiny liftgate-mounted camera – helps guide you whenever you shift to R. Your garbage cans will thank you! Rear view camera2 With the combination of our hands-free phone, SYNC technology & BLIS , you can concentrate 100% on your driving and avoid those costly insurance deductibles! Q: Why travel insurance is important? A: We want our clients to have a wonderful vacation and trip insurance helps by minimizing worry. Perhaps they have to cancel the trip, or they get sick or lose their baggage. With insurance, they’re protected. Q: What types of travel insurance are available? A: There is a wide range, from policies that will reimburse you in full if cancel a trip for any reason to ones that are more restrictive. Q: How much does travel insurance cost? A: The cheapest option isn’t always the best—lower priced policies may not cover your entire investment. An agent can help you choose a policy based on your needs. MoneyBits Do you know the cost of a funeral? If not, you’re not alone. A recent poll by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling found that 83 percent of respondents had no idea of the costs or the financial responsibilities of a funeral. The average cost of a funeral can run between $7,000 and $10,000. If you’re responsible for a funeral, you’ll need to interact with the funeral home; acquire a headstone, likely from a marble supplier; and consult with the cemetery for a plot. While the funeral home can put these together in a package, all cost money. In addition, you’ll need to consider use of a hearse, a limo to bring people to the funeral, multiple death certificates (every agency will want one), an organist for the service, clergy or minister, flowers and obituary notices in the newspapers. The NFCC has some suggestions for making a

difficult (and expensive) time a bit easier. --Know in advance the funeral preferences of your loved ones. Make sure your own wishes are known as well by others in the family. Put these in writing and give copies to those who would handle arrangements for your funeral. --When the time comes, treat the expense of a funeral as you would any other large expense: comparison shop with at least two funeral homes. --By law, you must be given an itemized statement of the costs of goods and services being purchased. Barring specific costs, a good faith estimate must be given to you. Federal Trade Commission rules apply here, too, when it comes to the purchase of a casket. For example, you cannot be charged a fee for using a casket that is purchased elsewhere. --Don’t spend more than you need to. Fancy and elaborate isn’t necessary.
--Know the laws of your state, as they vary. Understand which are optional and which are required. Some funeral homes, for example, require embalming when there is to be viewing and visitation, while the state laws don’t require it. That might be an optional expense you can avoid. --If you purchase a pre-arranged funeral plan policy, know your state laws, and be sure your family knows you have it. For more information, go to www.consumer. ftc.gov and put “funeral” in the search box. There are nine articles with information on different aspects of arranging a funeral. Robert Miller
Ask Your Jeweler Dear Robert: How do I care for my Tiffany & Co. sterling silver? -- Janice T., West Bloomfield, MI Answer: Sterling silver is a precious metal and like all precious metal may require cleaning from time to time. To clean your sterling silver at home use a small amount of silver jewelry cleaner on a soft cloth, gently rub the piece of jewelry several times. Next you want to rinse the piece thoroughly in warm water and carefully dry. This will remove the tarnish and dullness, keeping your sterling silver like new. More of Us Getting Knee Replacement For a growing number of us, it will become necessary at some point to have a knee replacement. A recently completed 20year study, funded in part by the National Institute on Aging, shows the number of knee surgeries has steadily risen. More of us, it seems, are now walking pain-free. But the news isn’t all good, however. The study included 3.3 million participants who had a primary knee replacement and 300,000 who had a revision process, which

is replacement of a previous implanted joint. Along the way, hospital stays have gotten shorter for recovery from the knee surgeries. This has caused higher complication rates as well as higher readmission rates, as we go back in the hospital when things go wrong. Between 1991 and 2010, the number of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures rose a whopping 162 percent. The reason? There are more people likely to be considered as candidates for the surgery, more seniors in the population and more conditions that lead to osteoarthritis -- such as obesity. Again the flipside: Hospital stays were cut from eight to four days for primary surgery, and from nine to five days for revision surgeries. This was no doubt due to insurers who want patients out of the hospital as quickly as possible to cut costs. Hospital readmissions jumped from 4 percent to 5 percent for primary procedures, and from 6 percent to 9 percent for revisions. Revisions caused more than double the

readmission rates for wound infection, and a 100 percent increase for hemorrhage and heart attack. There’s one thing to be said for following a good diet: If we keep our weight down and stay out of the obese category, we might be able to avoid needing knee surgery. Wholesale Supply What’s the difference between 25 and 30 year shingles?
Answer: 25 year shingle is a flat shingle with a lower life expectancy and color limitations. In a 3 tab shingle, manufacturers only offer 5 years of non-prorated coverage. 30 years shingles are now lifetime shingles. You have a wider color selection, thicker shingles and more variety of styles. These shingles don’t prorate until after 10 years and you purchasing an overall better product. Entry Door Purchase
Perhaps the first thing we want to do is look at the colors in the area of the front door, and make the determination as to whether we want to stain or paint the door. We then need to look at glass patterns and if you are using a leaded glass we need to start thing about the color of the caming as we want to make sure everything will come together at the end. Therma Tru has a wonderful selection of different types of glass and patterns within the glass. The shape of the glass is also important as sometimes it can be awkward if you try and introduce an oval or rounded piece of glass into a home that has all squares and straight lines. We then need to consider the hinges and threshold colors as with caming choices, again when we are done we want everything to come together.

Latex vs. Oil
Dear James: Am I better off applying a waterbased latex paint or an oil-based paint? -- Ashleigh E, Farmington Hills, MI
Answer: There are different products for use on the interior and exterior of homes. Which one you choose can depend on what has been previously applied to the surface. It is important to know what product you are trying to cover. Many times a professional can tell what is likely on the surface or you can use a test kit to detect the presence of oil based paint. Putting latex paint over oil can cause problems down the road. Latex doesn’t bond well to oil and can be scraped off with your finger nail. You can remedy this by applying a full primer down before using latex paint. I prefer to just go ahead and use oil to avoid problems. Interior trim is the ideal place to use oil based paint because it dries harder and smoother. Latex is perfect for the exterior of homes. “
Dear Robert: Why is SPRING considered the best time to list my home for sale?
”
Question: Does landlord get tenant’s approval before doing any maintenance work? --Benjamin T., Lathrup Village, MI
Answer: NOW, there are different types of maintenance: 1. Regular maintenance of filters, rubber parts, etc, consumables that are replaced in the regular course of time 2. Requested maintenance within tenants rented space, eg, broken fixtures or other problems 3. Emergency maintenance, like broken water lines or electrical problems (and even fires and floods) The regular maintenance is usually scheduled in advance, and 24 hours is the standard MINIMUM. the requested maintenance is the same. The emergency stuff, however, can never be scheduled and should be written in every lease a clause or statement allowing management 24/7 access to the unit in the event of fire, flood, or any other emergency deemed necessary by the management. Don’t leave it open to interpretation, but remember the tenant is entitled to full respect so don’t do maintenance without proper notice unless absolutely necessary. ORCHARD10.COM 30835 West 10 Mile Rd Farmington Hills, MI 48336
-- Debbie B., Northville
Answer: At least in the Midwest, I suspect the “historical” Spring real estate market got most of its attention because of the positive energy surrounding the change of season from the winter into vibrant Spring. By the time Spring comes, we are pretty enthusiastic about cleaning up, improving and planting and selling. It also may refer to the timeline that families with children who consider making a move seem to follow, by listing in the Spring and moving in the Summer, when school is out. Truth is, at this particular time, if you’re considering selling your home, there hasn’t been a better time for many years, than right now. Values are rising and homes that are neat, clean and competitively priced are selling quickly. So, after you’ve completed your Spring cleaning, Spring chores and Spring planting….have us come over and give you a complimentary Spring Estimate on your home’s value!
