TIDBITS® REMEMBERS by Kathy Wolfe April 14 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. In memoriam, Tidbits brings you the facts and figures of this monumental tragedy, as well as information about the famous 1997 film produced by James Cameron. • • Constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland, the Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world at the time. Nearly 14,000 laborers contributed to her construction, at a cost of nearly $8 million. (Compare this to the cost of making Cameron’s 1997 movie “Titanic,” with a production price tag of over $200 million.) • • The ship was four city blocks long and weighed 46,329 tons. Three million rivets held the hull together. On launch day, 44,000 pounds (19,958 kg) of soap, grease and oil were required to slide the massive craft into the water. Twenty-nine boilers fueled the 159 coal-burning furnaces.

(continued) • • The coolers were stocked with 75,000 pounds (34,019 kg) of fresh meat, 11,000 pounds (4,989 kg) of fresh fish, 36,000 oranges, 40,000 eggs, 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg) of butter and 1,500 gallons (6,819 l) of milk. The cupboards were filled with 12,000 dinner plates, 3,000 teacups, 300 nutcrackers, 6,000 tablecloths and 45,000 napkins. • • Although designed and licensed to carry 3,500 passengers, only 2,223 people were on board, including millionaire John Jacob Astor, mining magnate Benjamin Guggenheim and Macy’s department store owners Isidor and Ida Straus. The most elegant first-class suites were priced at $4,350, which translates to about $75,000 in today’s money. Second-class fares were $1,750 ($24,000 today), and third class steerage was available for $30, about $350 today. First-class passengers ate their meals from fine china edged in 22k gold • • The final evening meal served on the Titanic consisted of 11 different courses, including raw oysters as an hors d’oeuvre, cream of barley soup, cold asparagus vinaigrette and roast duckling. • • Four days into the Atlantic crossing, the ship struck an iceberg, one estimated at 500,000 tons, with 50 feet (15.2 m) above the water and seven-eighths of its bulk below. Icebergs are typically at their worst during April, because warmer spring temperatures melt the thick ice of the sea that has held the icebergs in place, releasing them to float free. The ship’s wireless operators received seven telegraphed ice warnings that fateful night. The final message, placed under a paperweight, was never delivered to those on the ship’s bridge. The ice field the Titanic encountered was close to 80 miles (128 km) long. • • The ship was equipped with lifeboats for 1,178 of the more than 2,200 people on board. The death toll was 1,517, of which only 306 bodies were recovered. Although a lifeboat could hold 65 people, the first one was launched with only 28 on board. Had the crew loaded the existing lifeboats to capacity, 500 more lives could have been saved. • • The original plans called for an additional 12 lifeboats on the deck, but the White Star Line’s management ditched the idea, claiming the deck would “look too cluttered.” • • It was not a large gash in the hull of the Titanic that caused her to sink; rather the force of the impact caused the steel rivets to pop, buckling the steel plates of the hull. Based on the ship’s speed of about 22 knots, if the iceberg had been sighted only 30 seconds sooner, the collision could have been avoided. With one knot equal to 1.516 mph (2.44 km/h), 22 knots was close to the highest speed the ship had ever reached. • • It took only two hours and 40 minutes for the Titanic to sink after striking the iceberg. The ship that responded immediately to the distress calls was the Carpathia, 58 miles (93 km) away. Unfortunately, it took four hours for the ship to reach the Titanic. The Carpathia carried the 700-plus survivors into New York harbor, where the ship was met by over 40,000 people. • • Most of the victims froze to death rather than drowned in the 28º F (-2º C) water, where death occurred in as little as 15 minutes. When James Cameron produced his 1997 movie blockbuster, he instructed cast members on the stages of hypothermia in order to make their scenes more realistic. Cameron advised his cast, “It’s supposedly a very peaceful feeling.”

The actors’ icy frozen hair was created by coating hair with colored wax. • • Of the 306 bodies recovered, 150 were never claimed. Those unclaimed were buried in Halifax, Nova Scotia. • • Captain Edward Smith had plans of retiring after safely navigating the Titanic to New York City, wrapping up 38 years with the White Star Line. • • The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in September 1985, on an expedition led by Robert Ballard. She lay approximately 400 miles (644 km) off the coast of Newfoundland, 1,191 miles (1,917 km) from New York City, 12,460 feet (3,798 m) below the ocean’s surface. The bow and the stern were 1,970 feet (600 m) apart. During Ballard’s expedition, more than 20,000 photos were shot in four days. • • Producer James Cameron made 12 trips to the actual wreckage site to conduct research for his 1997 film. His movie contains actual footage from these trips, shot on location. A replica of the ship was constructed for the film, and it was sunk in an immense tank filled with 17 million gallons of water. A hydraulic lift was used to tilt the tank and raise and lower the ship. • • Several items recovered from the wreckage now reside in a Philadelphia museum, including Mrs. John Jacob Astor’s lifebelt, a menu from the dining room, a deck chair and a piece of wood from a lifeboat. • • The youngest passenger on the ship was Millvina Dean, just nine weeks old. Her parents were emigrating to Wichita, Kansas, where they had family and friends. Millvina, along with her mother and brother, were some of the first steerage passengers to be loaded into lifeboats. Her 25-year-old father did not survive. Millvina was also the last living survivor, passing away in May 2009, at the age of 97. Her ashes were scattered off the Southampton dock, where the Titanic had been launched. Strangely enough, her brother died on the 80th anniversary of the sinking.

¥ On April 13, 1742, George Friedrich Handel’s “Messiah” premieres in Dublin. Although singing the oratorio has become a Christmas tradition, the Messiah received its world premiere during the Christian season of Lent. Handel composed the score for Messiah in just 24 days. ¥ On April 14, 1818, Noah Webster, a Yale-educated lawyer with an avid interest in language and education, publishes his American Dictionary of the English Language. The dictionary, which took him more than two decades to complete, introduced more than 10,000 “Americanisms.” ¥ On April 12, 1861, the Civil War begins when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard open fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay. During the next 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. ¥ On April 10, 1906, O. Henry’s second short-story collection, “The Four Million,” is published. O. Henry was the pen name adopted by William Sydney Porter. Porter began writing in the late 1880s but didn’t apply himself seriously until 1898, when he was jailed for embezzling from a bank in Austin, Texas. ¥ On April 15, 1924, Rand McNally releases its first comprehensive road atlas. The first version was called the Rand McNally Auto Chum. Today Rand McNally is the world’s largest maker of atlases in print and electronic media. ¥ On April 11, 1945, the American Third Army liberates the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar, Germany. Buchenwald will be judged second only to Auschwitz in the horrors it imposed on its prisoners. Among those saved by the Americans was Elie Wiesel, who would go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. ¥ On April 9, 1969, the Chicago Eight, indicted on federal charges of conspiracy to cross state lines with intent to incite a riot at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, plead not guilty. The trial turned into a circus as the defendants and their attorneys used the court as a platform to attack President Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, racism and oppression.

Understanding Breast Calcifications DEAR DR. DONOHUE: The receptionist at my doctor’s office called to give me the report on a mammogram I had taken. She said that it showed calcifications and that the doctor wanted it repeated in six months. Why? Are calcifications indications of cancer? If they are, I’d like to get this taken care of immediately. I am becoming a nervous wreck thinking about this. -- H.M. ANSWER: When tests don’t provide a definite answer, everyone suffers -- the patient, the doctor of the patient and the doctor who interpreted the test. Calcifications are the perfect example. They’re calcium specks. When the doctor interpreting the mammogram sees them, he or she bases their importance on their number, their shape, their size and the pattern they make. With those criteria, the doctor usually can say whether they indicate cancer. Noncancerous calcifications might result from a bump to the breast to which you paid little attention. Or a minor breast infection could have caused them. If the doctor feels that evidence points more in the direction of cancer, then he or she will ask for an immediate biopsy. If the doctor feels more certain that they are not cancer signs but is not completely certain about that call, a repeat examination at a later date is a reasonable position to take. Neither the interpreting doctor nor your personal doctor would ask for a delay if there was any chance that the inaction would harm your health. ANSWER: Cellulite is beneath-the-skin fat that forms small puckers due to crisscrossing fibers similar to but not the same as scar-tissue fibers. The fiber-puckered fat gives the involved skin a lumpy-bumpy appearance. Laser treatments, radiofrequency wave treatments and ultrasound have been used for removing cellulite. These are cosmetic procedures and likely are not covered by insurance. Innumerable creams are advertised for cellulite reduction, but I can’t tell you if they work. I would be cautious about trying any that are costly. Weight loss makes cellulite less obvious. You are best served by consulting a dermatologist. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past several days, my left eyelid has been twitching. There’s no pain. It does not affect my vision. Does it mean anything? -- T.P. ANSWER: Not usually. Eyelid twitches result from spasms of muscles controlling eyelid movement. It’s intermittent and lasts for a few days, at most. Fatigue, stress and caffeine have been implicated as causes. I have had such twitching, at times when I was neither tired nor stressed nor drinking caffeine. If the twitching is bothersome, soak a washcloth in warm water and apply it to the closed eyelid. Put Time - and Tax-Advantaged Investments - on Your Side

If you’re relatively young, and you’ve been investing only a few years, you possess an asset that is invaluable and cannot be replaced: time. And the more time you spend contributing to tax-advantaged investments, the better off you may be.

As an investor, time is your ally for two reasons. First, the more time you give to your growth-oriented investments, the greater their growth potential. And second, the effects of market volatility have tended to decrease over time, though as you no doubt have heard, past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Clearly, it pays to put time on your side. And when you’re investing in tax-advantaged vehicles, time becomes an even more critical component of investment success, especially when you are young and have several decades ahead of you before you retire. Suppose, for example, that you put $200 per month into an investment on which you paid taxes every year. If you earned a hypothetical 7% return on this investment, you’d end up with about $324,000 after 40 years. But if you put that same $200 per month into a tax-deferred investment, such as a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and you earned that same 7% return, you’d wind up with about $513,000 after 40 years. Of course, once you starting taking withdrawals, presumably when you’re retired, you’ll have to pay taxes on your earnings, so your after-tax accumulation would be about $385,000, assuming you took your IRA in a lump sum (which most people don’t) and also assuming you were in the 25% tax bracket. However, by the time you retire, you may be in a lower bracket. Plus, you have some control over how much you withdraw each year, so you may be able to affect the taxes you’ll pay. Furthermore, depending on your income level, your contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible in the years in which you make the contributions. (Keep in mind that this hypothetical example is for illustrative purposes only and does not represent a specific investment or investment strategy.) While tax deferral is obviously a nice feature for an investment, tax-free may be even better. If you meet the income requirements, you might want to consider investing in a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings withdrawals, provided you’ve held your account for at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least age 59½. This means that, in the above example, you’d have accumulated that same $513,000 — but you won’t have to pay taxes on your withdrawals. Generally speaking, the Roth IRA may make more financial sense for those who are eligible, but if you think you’ll be in a lower tax bracket when you retire, and your income level permits you to de...continued on next column

Since that time, only eight authors have managed to have books place No. 1 on both the fiction and nonfiction lists. Those who have accomplished that feat include Ernest Hemingway, Jimmy Buffett, William Styron, Dr. Seuss and John Steinbeck. ¥ If you’re planning a trip to New Orleans, you might want to keep in mind the following law: It’s illegal in that city to curse a firefighter while he or she is engaged in official duties. ¥ America’s first vending machines were found in New York City train stations; they dispensed gum. ¥ The European sturgeon (also known as the beluga sturgeon) is the source of the highly coveted beluga caviar, which is the world’s most expensive, bringing up to $5,000 per pound. This sturgeon can live more than 100 years and is the largest freshwater fish in the world; the record holder, caught in 1827, was 24 feet long and weighed 3,460 pounds. ¥ In a 1982 issue of the magazine American Film, a writer named Chuck Ross claimed that he retyped the screenplay to the 1942 film “Casablanca,” changing only the title and one of the character’s names, and submitted it to 217 agencies. Of the 85 who responded, only eight recognized it as “Casablanca,” though it seemed familiar to another 25. Three of the agencies thought it might be commercially viable, while one thought it should be turned into a novel. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Settle an argument my friend and I are having. I think that terrier dogs are the most popular pet (among dog owners). My friend says Labs are the most popular. What’s your take? -- Beth C., Trenton, N.J. DEAR BETH: The American Kennel Club recently released its registration statistics for 2011, which revealed that among registered pets, the Labrador retriever was the most popular breed in the United States. In fact, the Labrador retriever has held that top spot for 21 years. The Yorkshire terrier placed fifth among AKC registrations. Here are the top 10 breeds for 2011-12: 1. Labrador retriever 2. German shepherd 3. Beagle 4. Golden retriever 5. Yorkshire terrier 6. Bulldog 7. Boxer 8. Poodle 9. Dachshund 10. Rottweiler Now, this may or may not settle the argument. Unregistered dogs, of course, aren’t on there, nor are many adopted shelter pets. But it’s a pretty good barometer of the type of dogs, in terms of size, behavior traits and other elements, that currently are popular among owners. Farther down the list -- more than 100 breeds were ranked -- you’ll find the various terrier breeds, such as the Boston terrier (No. 22) and West Highland white terrier (No. 35) to name a couple. Breed popularity tends to jump around: Bulldogs ranked No. 19 a decade ago, but today sit at No. 6. At any rate, take the loss in stride. Make peace over a frosty beverage, and take comfort in knowing that the most popular dog for you is the one you choose (or that chooses you). Strawberry Pie My Mom always made the best homemade pies. She gave me this recipe a long time ago. It is delicious. Hope you like it as much as my family does. 1 baked pie shell 3 pints fresh strawberries, washed and hulled small amount of red food coloring 1 1/4 cups sugar 1/2 cup water 3 1/2 Tblsp. cornstarch Mash 1 pint of strawberries. Set aside. Combine sugar, cornstarch and add 1/2 cup water. Add mashed strawberries. Cook over medium heat. Bring to boil, stirring constantly, then boil about 2 more minutes, stirring. Remove from heat, stir in food coloring (just to brighten up the color). Slice strawberries, fold into sauce. Sometimes I add a little more strawberries, so it is piled high! I add about 1/2 tsp nutmeg to the mixture. Pour into pie shell. Refrigerate until set and cold. Serve with fresh whipped cream. YUM!

Save your peels and stash them in a net bag hanging from your rearview mirror for just a day or two. As they dry, they give off the best smell. ¥ Need to take pills daily? Set a reminder on your cellphone. Most have alarm functions, and it works! ¥ “This tip is from my babysitter. She gives small children two ‘get out of bed free’ tickets at bedtime. If they get out of bed, say, for one last drink of water, etc. (we parents know these are stalling tactics), they have to give her a ticket. If they still have a ticket unused when they fall asleep, she will leave a prize with their parents for the morning.” -- M.J. in New Mexico ¥ “My friend and I found some great vintage spice bottles at a garage sale.
