Franklin-Southampton County Fair

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4, 2019

WELCOME TO THE FAIR! Welcome to the 39th annual Franklin-Southampton County Fair. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the fair board to say THANK YOU for showing your support for the Franklin-Southampton County Fair by coming out to the fair grounds for four fantastic days of food, fun and fellowship. We have had overwhelming support this year from the business community and we would like to give a very big THANK YOU to each of them. The board of directors and all of our volunteers have been busy these last few months putting on the final touches to the fair grounds and buildings to make this year the best year possible. We have a great lineup of entertainment as always from local groups to national recording artists. We are excited about our new mid-way this year that is sure to bring thrills and chills! There will, of course, be the family favorite of our “little” Miss and our Queen’s contests. There will be food and fun for everyone. So bring your family, bring your friends and bring your chairs to the Southampton County Fairgrounds Aug. 7 through Aug. 10 for the best outdoor party of the year! See ya at the Fair! Sandra Heeren Board of Directors

Dear friends, neighbors and guests, As natives of Southampton County, we are proud of its natural beauty, its rich agricultural heritage and, most of all, its friendly and hospitable people. For more than 35 years now, we’ve taken a few days each August and set aside the rigors and demands of day-to-day affairs to celebrate those things which are most important to us. This annual celebration, the Franklin-Southampton County Fair, has grown and evolved from modest beginnings into a premier event attracting thousands of residents and visitors each August. It is a celebration of what is good about living in rural and small-town America. Much like a breath of fresh air, it will remind you of a simpler time. Who can forget the proud smile of a youngster whose 4-H project has just been awarded a blue ribbon? Or dozens of giggling children chasing after a greased pig? Or our beautiful and talented young ladies competing for the title of Miss Franklin-Southampton County Fair? Where else do we have an opportunity to pause and reflect upon the marvelous bounty of our soils and the creative skills of our artisans and craftsmen? Or relax in our favorite lawn chair and listen to some of the finest musical entertainment in the country? Or simply spend quality time with one another — our families, our neighbors and our friends? Come. Leave your worries at the gate and step back in time. Remind yourself of what a wonderful place the Franklin-Southampton County region is. Mike Johnson County Administrator

Franklin-Southampton County Fair

On behalf of the Franklin-Southampton County Fair Board of Directors and our many volunteers, I would like to invite you to join us at the 2019 Franklin-Southampton County Fair. This is our 39th year of providing family fun and entertainment to Southampton County and its surrounding communities. We offer entertainment for all ages while preserving those traditions such as agriculture and horticulture that lie at our county’s core. Our entertainment includes home arts, exhibits, crafts, livestock shows, the Queen’s pageant, legendary fair food, live performances and much more. With that being said, none of this would be possible without our many dedicated board members, volunteers, vendors, advertisers and sponsors. A big thank you is in order for their hard work and commitment to this great event. Our volunteers work year-round while juggling their work and home life in order to make this possible for you, our guests. So come out and enjoy all we have to offer at our four-day event. See you at the Fair! Glenn Joyner President of the Franklin-Southampton County Fair

Cecil Edwards, friends are ready to entertain

SUBMITTED

Cecil Edwards and will perform on Saturday, Aug. 10. This will be on the Main Stage at the fair starting at 5:30 p.m.

COURTLAND Cecil Edwards Jr. is a Franklin native who has lived in the Southampton County area most of his life. His passion for music started very early. Like most singers, at a young age he started out singing along with the radio in the family car and made the transition to singing in church. While attending church Edwards met a youth leader who played guitar. That person took the time and taught him how to play. After learning only a few chords on the guitar, some local musicians heard Edwards sing and asked if he wanted to join their band. Thus began his

adventure as being a performing musician. This all happened 43 years ago and his passion for music since then has continued to grow. Throughout this time, Edwards has had the opportunity to play music with some of the best musicians in the region. He has been in multiple bands, played in lots of different kinds of venues and has enjoyed sharing his passion for music. Edwards has been to Nashville several times with hopes of taking the next step. Recently, he has turned his efforts toward writing with hopes of recording a CD, getting it published

and promoted by early 2020. He is excited about the opportunity to perform for the hometown crowd at the Franklin-Southampton County Fair. Joining him is Ed Marks, one of the best lead guitarist that he has ever had the honor of sharing the stage with. Ed also started playing guitar at a young age and has had a long career sharing the stage, playing awesome guitar solos and providing his expertise with a long list of musicians and bands. Ed’s guitar work is top notch and is in high demand. Cecil and Ed have played music together off and on for 20-plus years.

Also joining Cecil and Ed is a very talented local bass player, Steve Hudgins. Steve has had a very long career playing music and providing vocals with multiple regional groups. His smooth playing style and vocals showcase his talent and are an asset to any group. So come out on Saturday, Aug. 10, to support hometown, local musicians. They will be playing covers of your favorite country and classic rock songs as well as original music. Then stick around for the Davisson Brothers and Dylan Carmichael. It’s going to be a night of great music!

Miss Teen proud of making a positive impact BY ALLISON MARTIN

When I received the title as Teen Miss Franklin/Southampton County Fair, a feeling of utter joy and pride ran through me. I was not only proud of myself and everything I had accomplished, but I was proud of knowing that both of my loving parents were watching over me and feeling every bit of happiness that I felt. Throughout my year as a fair queen, I was given the opportunity to build new and lasting relationships with different people in my community. There were a couple of occasions where a younger girl would see me in my crown and sash and say to their mom “Look, it’s a princess!” This amazed me because I am just as normal as any other teenage girl. Being a fair queen has allowed me to expand my comfort zones, travel to new places, meet new people, and lastly, it has allowed me to feel joy in knowing that I have been able to make an impact on our

community. I would like to thank Janet and Renee for all the hard work they put into this pageant every year and for making me feel welcome at every opportunity possible. My Aunt Carol, Uncle Jeremy and my sister Kaitlyn for always helping me through words of comfort and love throughout the process of my reign. My sweet boyfriend, Logan, and his family for always being there whenever I needed an extra push of encouragement or assistance with anything. I would also like to thank my loving parents for raising me to be the strong and independent young lady that I have become. Throughout their time on earth with me, they were both able to instill so many qualities within me that I will carry with me wherever I go. Without the two of them and their love for me, I wouldn’t be the person I am today and for that, I am eternally grateful. Lastly, I could never forget to express

how thankful I am for the endless and amazing love of my Savior, Jesus Christ. His abundant love is what allows me to stand here tonight and without him, none

of this could have been possible. Thank you Franklin/Southampton County for giving me this amazing experience to cherish forever.

Pageant builds sisterhood, lasting bonds BY PENNY RAIFORD

What can I say, this last year as Ms. Franklin-Southampton County Fair Queen has been amazing! I never thought that I would get to share such an experience with the younger girls, not to mention two of my own daughters. We have shared many memories along the way from the haunted barn, to bingo sessions, pictures with Santa, and even the annual trip to the Homestead to watch the Virginia Association of Fairs Pageant and cheer on our Miss Queen. My group of Queens and Queen Moms were by far the best ever. The thing about this pageant is that it builds sisterhood and a lasting bond they will never forget. It was definitely challenging to step out from being pag-

eant mom to pageant queen, but I believe I did it gracefully. The highlight of this journey for me was hosting the paint night to help out a dear friend battling cancer. If you have ever wondered if pageantry is for you then my answer is YES. I’m humbled by the experience given to me and I am proof that sometimes in life being first runner-up isn’t all that bad. Good luck to the young ladies vying for that crown and those who do win will have the best year of their lives. Thanks to so many who helped out this past year. There’s no time to thank individuals personally as I know you are all waiting for crowning, so for the last time I am, Penny Raiford, your 2018 Ms. Franklin-Southampton County Fair Queen.

Music entered Carmichael’s life through pure osmosis. His father and uncles performed in a southern gospel quartet, his mother sang around eastern Kentucky, and her brothers (John Michael and Eddie Montgomery) both enjoyed massive chart success. Carmichael fell in love with country legends like Waylon Jennings and Vern Gosdin alongside the rock and roll he heard on the radio, and by the time he hit his teens, he was writing his own songs and performing live. After finishing high school, Carmichael relocated to Nashville, where he earned a publishing deal at the tender age of 18. Carmichael began collaborating with some of country’s most talented writ-
