DENMARK IS THE LEAST CORRUPT COUNTRY IN THE WORLD

Audience success and world record The horse society in Sweden and Friends Arena has set a world record! Sweden International Horse Show 2014 was an international success. – We have examined all the figures of the International Equestrian Federation, and all indicates that we set a new world record on Saturday, says Ulf Rosengren, president of SIHS. The audience at Sweden International Horse Show has most likely contributed to set a world record.

Saturday's peak of 13,750 people in the stands during one show alone is the highest attendance so far at an indoor horse event. – The international association FEI has no exact statistics but it can be appreciated that no another indoor horse event have had more visitors on site at the same time, says Ulf Rosengren, president of SIHS, who asked the FEI to examine the attendance figures at all world horse shows and competitions.

For the third time in a row Denmark occupies the top spot in Transparency International's study of corruption worldwide. No bribery and an open and well-functioning public sector have placed Denmark in the top of the rankings since the first study in 1995. The most widely used measurement of corruption is Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perception Index, which focuses on the perception of corruption in the public sector. The newly released 2014 edition covers 175 countries and places Denmark at the top of the list.

Personlig assistans med själ och hjärta

ANNONS

THE INTERVIEW

Angelina Jolie “I love being behind the camera and I prefer it. And I’d be much happier. If they told me tomorrow I had to make a choice, I’d certainly just be a director” BY: LEX MARTIN | THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

20

21

W

hat was your approach with this story? – I directed my first film and it was more an independent film. So when you want to do more films, you meet with studios. So I had my rounds of meetings and introduced myself as a director and they give you sheets that say 'Open directing projects'. They have 50 different projects in four sentencences and I was looking through Universal’s and it said 'Unbroken – The story of Louis Zamperini', and it described his strength and resilience and human spirit. Of all of them I said 'What is that one?' And they said: 'That one’s been around for about 60 years.' I came home and I mentioned it to Brad and he said 'Honey, that one’s been around forever.' And I went in and met on it and didn’t expect to get that job. I thought I would have a good talk with the studio. I would never have expected I could get a job this size as a director. And then I read the book and I was so moved by it and inspired by him that I felt I would do anything to spend years of my life next to this man and learning about his life and walking in his footsteps. So I started pitch and fight and structure the scripts and the story to try to figure out how to get the job. There are elements from his biography that are not included. Did you find it difficult to put in certain parts of his life? – There were many parts. Overall, it was not that one aspect of his life was more or less important than

22

the other. One of my favorite things was him stealing the Nazi flag. We wanted to do that in the streets of Berlin. We actually shot him meeting Hitler. We have a whole section, but we couldn’t fit every single piece in. The end was: What does everything mean? – So for example, meeting Hitler, we had it in and people who didn’t know the story said: What did that mean? Was supposed to be symbolic of Germany’s role in the war? – And it wasn’t, so it was just an interesting element in his life. So we started to separate between what were very interesting elements in his life and than what were elements that were crucial to his growth and the overall story. But it was very difficult to do that. For everyone who sees the movie, you just want them to read the book. What was the bravest decision you had to make as a director on this film? – Deciding inside myself – we all have self-doubt and this story meant a lot to me, but I wasn’t sure I could look Louis Zamperini in the eye and tell him I was the best person to make it. I had to find that within myself and believe that – if I didn’t know about sharks, I would learn about sharks, if I didn’t know how to shoot a race, I’d learn how to shoot a race. I would work and work and work and try to become the best person to make it out of sheer will. But not that I was naturally the best person to make it. Taking on that man’s legacy – he passed away a few months ago, and this is his life. If we succeed or fail, it’s the final chapter in his life.

"It’s a very odd combination to be the person on set that is supposed to be the most confident person on set and then at the same time to be the most broken person"

Do you as a director have more confidence now than ever? – By nature of this story you just have to. Some of the scenes – like the plank, that was the moment – but it is not an easy thing to convince everybody that the whole movie is going to rest on two men looking at each other. Trust me, this is a great idea. That scene in particular was where I found some footing – I was sure of something, but I couldn’t quite explain it. I just had to do it. And that’s part of the director’s job. If you have a vision for a piece that you can’t quite describe, unless you construct it and make it and show it. And I learned a lot about myself during that particular section of the film.

It’s interesting to hear that you have so much self doubt. With all that you have achieved, privately and professionally, you should be the most confident person in the world. – Absolutely not. And certainly not as a director. I was very happy about my first film. The first one I did resulted in the initiative that has now 135 countries signed on to it. I couldn’t be more proud, but I still didn’t feel – When you have to fill out the visa form and it says 'What do you do for a living?' – I would like to put 'director', but I still didn’t. I still don’t. I still feel kind of shy, because it means a lot to me. It’s separate from that thing when you are in front of the camera. It’s just your mind and your contribution simply is that. I didn’t have that faith in myself that I could take something on of this size and this importance. So every time somebody says 'it’s a good movie'. – I am still walking into these rooms, nervous whether you understand the story, whether it resonated or not, whether you did a good job or not. Do you read reviews? – I read two, because some people wanted to make me calm down a little bit. I don’t regularly read them. I just kind of ask somebody if it’s going okay. And they say yes. You were quoted saying that you would quit acting... – It’s not an accurate quote. I will do a few more things as an actress because I believe if those roles come up, I imagine there is one or two. We have been developing "Cleopatra" for six years. So at some point I think we will do that. But I love being behind the camera and I prefer it. And I’d be much happier. If they told me tomorrow I had to make a choice, I’d certainly just be a director. And now you are directing yourself... – It’s very difficult. I gave myself a very hard time. It’s not an easy thing to do. I was playing a character that was very broken and emotional. And it’s a very odd combination to be the person on set that is supposed to be the most confident person on set and then at the same time to be the most broken person. It was very strange, not comfortable. So is it harder to direct yourself or Brad? – Definitely myself. Brad is wonderful to direct.

Angelina Jolie, in the role of director, on the set of her Bosnian war drama "In the Land of Blood and Honey".

Wasn’t it strange to have two World War 2 movies at the same time in your family – as Brad was working on "Fury“? How did you deal with the kids during that time? – The kids were mostly in Australia, but they went to Paris to go to be for a bit with dad in London. So we shared them. It was nice. I was doing "Unbroken" and Brad had found "Fury" and was really excited by it. We don’t usually work apart, but it was something that was very important for him to do. So that’s what we did. But even though both are World War 2, they are very different.

23

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt during the 64th Cannes Film Festival.

"So I started pitch and fight and structure the scripts and the story to try to figure out how to get the job"

What did Brad make of your film? – He has seen a rough cut. He has not seen the final film. Did he give any clues? – Yes. I don’t know what else he could say to me. But it is a different thing, because he not only knows whether or not he is seeing a film. He was with me when I was pacing up and down the hall wondering why I was not getting the call to get the job and he was with me when I first met Louis and he drove me to the hospital to see him. He knows how much this is my life and that it’s a story about my friend. I imagine he does not see it as clearly as somebody else might. But he was very, very supportive. How do you balance the spiritual message of this story with the brutality of the WW 2 scenario? – That was part of what the plank was that moment of being able to look and see each other, and to have him in the empty room and look over the room when the war was over. It’s the reflection on all of the war. When Louis came to terms with what happened in the war, he went back and shook hands with the prison guards who held him. And he went to visit the victims of Hiroshima. There is great footage of him doing racing classes with the Japanese, because he felt connected to the Japanese people. Yes, there is the brutality between the people who are at war, but

24

the civilians died on both sides. That’s the bombing of Tokyo is featured in our film. For him, it’s his story, it’s part of his message and his journey and part of his survival. If he wasn’t able to release all of his anger and his desire to kill the Bird. If his whole life is simply focused on that, he would never have contributed as much as he eventually did to the world, raised his beautiful children and done what he did with his life. It was a strong message for all of us. Joel and Ethan Coen are listed as co writers. How did they get involved? – I think of them as epic storytellers. I knew we had the emotional side of it. It’s such an epic story but I felt it also needed to have a good structure, it had to move along and occasionally it had to have a good joke. It needed to have a certain sharpness along with all the emotional, beautiful, high-minded elements. It had to be good storytelling with good construction and people who were not too overly sentimental with their work. Because it’s a danger of this film, too. I could have gone so sentimental and it needed to be above that for an audience. So they really helped with that and with the construction of how to put a book into a film, because they had done it before. They helped me to calm and not feel bad if I felt I was being disrespectful to a chapter or a section by not doing everything literally, because that’s not going to be a good movie. So let it go.

Legendary 1936 Olympian and World War II hero Louie Zamperini, whos life the movie "Unbroken" is about.

"Every time I have doubtful moments I will always remember Louis and he will always help me to face a challenge"

The movie looks gorgeous... – It’s Roger Deakins. He is so extraordinary. He has such an eye. We met and had a talk about this film and we said: It’s this generation, it’s this time. We are not making a classic film, but it’s certainly not going to be done in a modern style. It’s not casual, it’s purposeful. Every frame needs to be decisive. For where he puts the camera, for how I line up everybody, so they have their rooms and the right place that we would be in sync. Everything is very clear. We also talked about that we wanted to make a PG 13 film and how we could cover some of the violence, whether things would be off screen or in silhouette. It was a very harrowing story so it was important that we would make it as beautiful as possible, because in fact his life is beautiful. So through all of the trials and tribulations we wanted the audience to be able to absorb it. The raft is difficult to watch but the sunrise is also beautiful. This is a movie for an audience and not to upset an audience or drag them through the worst thing they have ever seen. We really want this to be a good experience. How has Louis’ story influenced you as a person? – I have become stronger for having been around this story. Every time I have doubtful moments I will always remember him and he will always help me to face a challenge.

Angelina Jolie who's an UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador talks with flood affected women during her visit at Kandaro II Camp in Nowshera, Pakistan.

"Every woman I know would fight to the death for her family. It does not seem unusual for me"

How much of the film has he seen, how did he react? – He saw the film before some visual effects on my laptop in the hospital. I went in there naively expecting some kind of review. And in truth, I just sat with this 97-year-old man watching his life before his eyes as he was preparing to die. It was very moving, very peaceful. And he smiled when he saw his mom, he jumped a little when the flak hit and was remembering. It was quite a thing to see a body fail and at the same time watching that with bright blue eyes, staring at the screen and watching himself cross the finish line. It was amazing, an amazing time. Aside from movie making do you still have other ambitions, in the political sense, for example? – I want to be wherever I am useful. When it comes to politics is more 'Where can I effect change?' If I can effect change through telling stories as a director, if I can do it with my UN work and speaking out in advocacy or recently working on the campaign against statelessness. It’s never say never. If somebody said to me 'Tomorrow you can make great

28

change for all the things that concern you, but you’d have to make these changes in your life,' it would be hard not to, because there is a responsibility to do everything you can. But it’s not anything I am actively seeking. There is almost no female character in this movie – although everybody expects you to make movies about women... – Is that right? I don’t know. Maleficent is a strong female. I have been fortunate in my work that I have been able to portray strong women. But we do have a very strong female in this movie – we have a mother. Never underestimate that. I was just the case. In World War 2 there were many extraordinary women that were involved in the fighting, but they were not in the frontlines and they were no part of this particular story. But for the world to assume that women and conflict don’t go hand in hand is not accurate, because of course there is many women fighting in the front lines today. And every woman I know would fight to the death for her family. It does not seem unusual for me.

What is the story of these young soldiers going to bring to viewers of the same age now? – It was an extraordinary time and generation. It’s funny, Louis never liked the expression 'greatest generation'. He always used to call himself 'the heartiest generation'. There is some truth to that. They came out of the depression, they were very focused on community, their country, their family, their faith. It was a very selfless, very good nature. There was something very special about them. So there is a lot for us to learn and remember as we start to lose the last of this generation. It’s something all the boys connected to when they were in the film when I watched them. It was bringing out the best in them. Even their language was very cleaned up. It was hysterical, not only because it was PG 13, but it’s World War 2 and are not swearing. The planes crash and you say 'Oh boy'. And funnily enough you have these young men on set talking about their grandparents, talking about faith, talking about God. After they did the scene in the raft, they started to talk about faith and family, and they shared pictures of each other’s grandparents. And then they took pride in standing in line and in their hard day’s work. It helped to bring out something in them. So even though these men at that time were so young – and the death rate, I think half of the planes went down. So your chances of survival were so low in these planes. But they were hearty. There was something different. There is something to be learned from them. Louis was a great motivational speaker about faith. Did he change your views on this subject matter? – What he did and what he does, he opens you up to the possibility of that man is not alone and there just might be miracles, there just might be something. He didn’t have a way of saying 'You should believe this and this is right and this is wrong. And these are the rules of religion, and you should follow this. He never was like that.' He lead by example, he was just a great man, he was kind to everybody. But he also would tell me he was praying for me. And he prayed for our locations. There was one day he prayed for our locations and he called me and he said 'How is it going?' I said: 'It’s good.' And we had a double rainbow. And you have a moment when you smile and think: 'No. -- Maybe, who knows?' We have a lot today where we are also sure of what we don’t know, but there is something beautiful in accepting that there is something to be open to what we can’t explain and to find some comfort in that if need be. So I don’t know. Maybe he did change me.

MUSIC INSIGHT Joakim Erlandson Editor

NOT TO LEAVE THE ARMCHAIR

T

ravelling through music is an adventure that can almost be compared with travelling for real. Music can take you on a hugely-varied journey from Sweden and around the world at a frenzied pace. 3.21 minutes in West Africa accompanied by rock ‘n’ roll from Ghana quickly turns into 4.37 minutes of Colombian street music, which later drifts into jazz tones redolent of New York. Hey presto, in just over 10 minutes I’ve visited three continents. I have written about him before, but in this context I simply have to do so again: Lennart Wretlind, what a fantastic guide, takes your breath away. Just prior to sitting down at my desk I had listened in full to Wretlind Värld #60, a musical journey available on Spotify, and I feel as contented as ever. I wish that I could take a week off and listen to all the programmes in one week-long sitting. Ideally twice each. Wow, what a wonderful week that would be. In this instalment, Wretlind, successfully and with a sure sense of style, mixes songs from the Robert Plant & Alison Krauss album “Raising Sand” with the sounds of harmonious track “Buje Buje” from Nigeria’s Orlando Julius & The Heliocentrics, this week’s album classic and the album of the week, with, among others, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimi Hendrix, Taraf De Haidouks and Creem. You realise that this is something of a musical powder keg we are dealing with. As I enjoy the music I let myself be swept around the world, mentally visiting both Africa and the USA, and I haven’t even left the comfort of my armchair. Quite simply world class.

WILCO VOCALIST GOES SOLO Artist: Jeff Tweedy Album: Sukierae Record company: Anti Wilco was formed from the ashes of alternative country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, and since their début album in 1995 they have made some uncannily good songs; the band’s songwriter and singer Jeff Tweedy has now released his second solo album “Sukierae”. Consequently it’s not without reason that I have extremely high expectations as I put on my headphones, in the comfort of my favourite armchair, to listen to this work. Despite the high expectations I am at the same time a shade sceptical, since I know from experience how many solo projects have disappointed me over the years. I am happy to be able to put my sceptical thoughts aside as I quickly ascertain that Jeff Tweedy can be counted on. A solid double album offering just over two hours of music. Admittedly not the

STILL SO GOOD Artist: David Bowie Album: Nothing Has Changed Record company: Parlophone A summary of David Bowie’s career in three different editions with three different covers. For those who want to have everything, the 3-disc CD is what you need. The man has made such amazingly good songs that even if you’ve heard most of it before this is worth buying. All three editions include the new single, but it is actually the classic Bowie that is best. Buy.

absolute sharpest he has delivered over the years, but nevertheless more than passable. One sign that this is a personal album is the fact that his son, 18-year-old Spencer, sits at the drums, keeping the beat. Bands such as Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes and Local Natives have undoubtedly all listened to the gems written by Jeff Tweedy and performed by Wilco over the years. Now they have a solo album to be inspired by and I think perhaps primarily by the fine lyrics.

AAH, BEAUTIFUL AMIDST THE AUTUMN DARKNESS Artist: Cold Specks Album: Neuroplasticity Record company: Mute Here is an album that really fits the biting wind and rain when autumn is at its harshest. It’s dark in an extremely pleasing way and the voice fires the imagination and is great to listen to. The singer behind the voice is Canadian Al Spx, who made her début a few years ago with “I Predict A Graceful Expulsion”. Now she’s back – even stronger.

A TRIBUTE Artist: Pink Floyd Album: The Endless River Record company: Parlophone U It’s doubtful that Pink Floyd’s “The Endless River” will attract a mass of new fans, and perhaps won’t arouse the interest of any previous enthusiasts either. But for anyone for whom they have remained a favourite band, this is a truly first-rate album. The Endless River is a tribute to their late keyboardist Richard Wright and I feel it is worthy as such. The album is based on unreleased material from the band’s last studio album “The Division Bell” from 1993.

BOOKS THE AUSCHWITZ VIOLIN (FIOLERNA FRÅN AUSCHWITZ) Author: Maria Àngels Anglada Publisher: Albert Bonnier Förlag It is important that we never forget the horrors that took place in the concentration camps during the Second World War. “The Auschwitz Violin” by Catalan author Maria Àngels Anglada deals with the Holocaust from a different perspective. A quiet narrative that grips the reader.

BRILLIANCE Author: Marcus Sakey Publisher: Bokfabriken Gifted children with extraordinary abilities have been born in large numbers since the 1980s. They don’t just benefit society, some of them use their abilities to cause trouble for those in authority. But the world is not black and white, and principal character, agent Nick Cooper, is given cause to reflect on the difference between right and wrong. An excellent thriller to get lost in amidst the autumn darkness.

EDGE OF ETERNITY (EVIGHETENS RAND) Author: Ken Follet Publisher: Albert Bonnier Förlag “Edge of Eternity”, the final and concluding instalment in Ken Follet’s trilogy about the destinies of five families during the 20th century, is hard, nigh impossible, to put down and as a reader I felt completely caught up in world politics.

FALLING OUT OF TIME (FALLEN UR TIDEN) Author: David Grossman Publisher: Albert Bonnier Förlag David Grossman is one of Israel’s most renowned authors and his earlier book “To the End of the Land” was a huge critical and popular success. I thought the title was extremely beautiful, I remember, but I have yet to read it. However, I have read his latest book “Falling Out of Time” and immediately made up my mind to buy all his earlier books. I was completely enraptured by this, in my opinion, masterpiece. I’m not actually quite sure how to describe the book, as it sometimes feels like pure poetry rather than standard drama or prose. I think it’s best in actual fact not to pigeon-hole it or slot it into a specific genre. It stands on its own. His wordplay fires the imagination and is extremely beautiful despite the air of melancholy about the book. The story involves the loss of a child. Every parent’s greatest fear. And something experienced by the author himself when his twentyyear-old son was killed serving in the Israeli army. In spite of the tremendously sad topic around which the story revolves, it offers a fantastic reader experience. And it is perhaps intended to afford some solace to any parent who has ever lost a child.

REVIVAL (VÄCKELSE) Author: Stephen King Publisher: Albert Bonniers Förlag In the same spirit as H.P. Lovecraft’s and Edgar Allan Poe’s horror stories, Stephen King’s Revival poses the terrifying question about what awaits on the other side of death. It’s a dark novel about the biggest horror of all: losing those you love. Stephen King really knows how to write books.

SECRETS OF THE TIDES (SYSTRARNA TIDES SISTA SOMMAR) Author: Hannah Richell Publisher: Forum Bokförlag ‘An immensely dark family drama that despite everything contains light and warmth’ would be my brief summary of Hannah Richell’s début novel “Secrets of the Tides”. The story itself stems from a truly tragic event, the actual background of which is not revealed until the end and tantalises you throughout the novel. Strong début.

"Four ways that technology could destroy mankind" Stephen Hawking has warned that artificial intelligence could rise up and destroy mankind. Is he right? We look at four ways that technology could be the end of us. BY: MATTHEW SPARKES | THE DAILY TELEGRAPH | THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

S

tephen Hawking expanded humanity’s understanding of the universe with his theories on gravitational singularities and black holes, so when he speaks up it’s wise to listen. Which makes his warning that artificial intelligence could mean the end of humanity all the more disturbing. “The primitive forms of artificial intelligence we already have, have proved very useful,” he told the BBC. “But I think the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. "It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete, and would be superseded." Is he right? Did the screenwriters behind The Matrix, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Terminator all have a point? Will machines rise up and destroy us? We look at four ways that technology could destroy the human race. Artificial intelligence Hawking’s argument is that once a machine can truly think, it could learn to make improvements to itself

and gradually become more and more capable and intelligent. This iterative evolution of software from embryonic AI to super-intelligence could occur in the blink of an eye in human terms. It would rapidly become all-powerful, and we are as capable of understanding what a machine like that could do as a worm is of comprehending Stephen Hawking's immense intellect. How close are we to that basic thinking machine? Simple artificial intelligence is already being harnessed to design electrical circuits that we don’t fully understand. Some antennae designs produced by genetic algorithms, for example, work better than those conceived by humans – and we aren’t always sure why because they're too complex. Combine this software intelligence with robot bodies and a malevolent motivation and you have a gory science fiction film. But because every aspect of our lives is controlled by computers, such a superintelligence wouldn't need arms and legs to make life unpleasant.

39

40

"Some designs produced by genetic algorithms work better than those conceived by humans"

You can argue that we could do AI experiments on computers isolated from sensitive systems, but we don’t seem to be able to keep human hackers in check so why assume we can outwit thinking machines? You can also argue that AI may prove to be friendly, but if they treat us the way that we treat less intelligent creatures then we’re in a world of trouble. Scientific disaster There were fears that the first atomic bomb tests could ignite the atmosphere, burning alive everyone man, woman and child on Earth. Some believed that the Large Hadron Collider would create a black hole when first booted-up which would consume the Earth. We got away with it, thanks to the fact that both suggestions were hysterical nonsense. But what’s to say that one day we won’t attempt an experiment which actually does have apocalyptic results? Grey goo A decade ago they seemed like distant sci-fi to most people, but we’re all familiar with 3D printers now: you can buy them on Amazon. Next-day delivery. We're also creating 3D printers which can replicate themselves by printing the component parts for a second machine. Imagine a machine capable of doing this which is not only microscopically small, but nanoscopically small. So small that it can stack atoms together to make molecules. This could lead to all sorts of advances in manufacturing and medicine: inject a few thousand into a patient and they'll dissolve a tumour into harmless saline.

41

"Technology may be the cause of the end of the world, but it's likely to be less of a bang and more of a whimper"

Millions could float in your car's engine oil, replacing worn metal on vital components and removing the need for human maintenance. But what if we get it wrong? A single typo in the source code and instead of removing a cancerous lump in a patient these medi-bots could begin to indiscriminately churn out copies of themselves until the patient is converted into a pile of billions of the machines. Then the hospital, too, and the city it’s in. Finally the whole planet. This is the ‘grey goo’ scenario. There would be no way to stop it. If one machine made two machines over a period of 1,000 seconds, then they each made two, and so on, in ten hours you’d have 68 billion.

42

Prince Charles famously warned the Royal Society to consider this risk in 2003 and was widely mocked for it. Even the well-respected nanotechnologist Chris Phoenix discredits the idea, saying that ‘grey goo’ could not happen by accident but only as the “product of a deliberate and difficult engineering process”. It’s lucky, then, that nobody has ever carried out a difficult engineering project with the sole intention of harming millions of people. Oh, wait… Climate change By far the most likely doomsday scenario is also the least dramatic: our materialism and lack of care for the environment continue to affect the climate to the point where we cannot survive in it. Technology may be the cause of the end of the world, but it's likely to be less of a bang and more of a whimper.

Panama – heading in the right direction As the Panama Canal celebrates its centenary, the world can look forward to three historically important developments. What we are seeing is an expansion within shipping that could most simply be described as a global ‘arms race’. BY: HARALD MÖLLERSTRÖM

A

nother problem for Panama is that a certain proportion of manufacturing activity is leaving China due to increased labour costs and moving to countries in south-eastern Asia; in other words, nearer the Suez Canal. Other developments point to tougher competition for the Panama Canal as it enters its second century. Shipping containers from Shanghai to New York currently takes 26 days via Panama, compared to 28 using the Suez Canal. Shipping them to ports in California and then by rail across the continent is fastest and takes 21 days, but costs USD 600 more per container. The company with the biggest container vessels, A.P. Moller-Maersk, has ceased transporting its containers via the Panama Canal and all its goods now go via the Suez Canal. So the Panama Canal Authority is hedging its bets; leaving the door open for further expansion, with thriving port facilities on both coasts and a rail connection linking them. Panama is hoping that these and the adjacent tax-free zones will guarantee its future as a global logistics hub, a kind of Singapore of the Americas. But there’s a long way to go. Even though in the long run the expansion of the Panama Canal will not have anything like the same impact on global shipping as 100 years ago,

the principal aim when planning work commenced ten years ago was to draw traffic away from its main competitor, the Suez Canal. Once the expansion is complete, it will be possible for container vessels carrying up to 13,000 containers (compared to just under 5,000 at present) to pass through. This also means that capacity will double once the third set of locks is completed at the end of the year. Panama is busy widening the canal and increasing the depth. The country took over control of the canal from the Americans in 1999, and since 2007 has been engaged in this project, at an estimated cost of USD 5.3 billion and involving a new attempt to overcome gravity. 26,000 workers are employed on the project, which is also aiming to get the water in the canal to flow from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The rest of the world has been surprised by the speed and the efficiency with which work has progressed. The plans are for three new locks in parallel with the old ones. The new ones will be 420 metres long, with a width of 54 metres and a draught of 18 metres. The existing locks are 290 metres long, 33 metres wide and just under 13 metres deep. When the Panama Canal was opened in 1914, linking the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans, this signified not only a dramatic change in how goods were transported internationally, it also defied the law of gravity.

45

Large container vessel ship passing suez canal.

"Panama is hoping that thriving port facilities on both coasts and a rail connection linking them will guarantee its future as a global logistics hub" In the late 19th Century, the French made an unsuccessful attempt to construct a canal at sea level, ignoring the inexorable downward flow of the water. They finally gave up after the loss of 22,000 lives as a result of tropical diseases. The USA eventually constructed the canal and this was almost entirely thanks to President Theodore Roosevelt. Today almost all goods are transported in container vessels known as “Panamax, which carry a maximum of 5,000 steel containers and at just over 30 metres wide can narrowly pass through the canal. Use of small vessels makes the canal inefficient and in the event of hold-ups the waiting time can be up to ten days. The next generation of container vessels known as New Panamax will be capable of carrying up to 13,000 containers and they are naturally regarded as the future of maritime transport. Most container vessels ordered are also this size and in 20 years’ time almost 75 per cent of all transport by sea will use this size of vessel. Where freight costs today

46

between a country in the Pacific and the USA are USD 50 per ton, this would be halved with the new vessels. However, shipping companies have since begun using vessels capable of handling up to 18,000 containers and they hope one day to be able to produce vessels with even greater capacity. In early August the rest of the world was taken unawares by an Egyptian initiative to substantially expand the Suez Canal, coming only a month after Nicaragua announced plans to construct a brand new canal connecting the Pacific and the Atlantic. And several months later the government advised that they had received a loan of EUR 6.6 billion to pay for the expansion of the Suez Canal. This will be used to construct a second waterway parallel to the original canal to reduce queueing for the fastest shipping route between Europe and Asia. A logistics and industrial hub will also be built at a cost of approximately EUR 160 billion to attract more vessels and thus income. The revenues from the Suez Canal are an important source of income for Egypt, which suffered

a considerable decline in tourism and foreign investment owing to the rebellion in 2011 when the country’s ruler Hosni Mubarak was overthrown. The revenues from the Suez Canal for August totalled EUR 392.4 billion, which is the highest figure for an individual month in the history of the canal, according to the chairman of the canal authority Mohab Mamish in September, who also anticipated that 2014 would prove to be the best year in the history of the canal. It has been greeted with great enthusiasm nationally, but has met with opposition among the research community, who believe that the project may have devastating ecological consequences for the Mediterranean. The most important element of the project is a 72 km channel that must be dredged and excavated along the existing 160 km canal and will allow traffic in both directions along sections that are currently too narrow. Work commenced at the start of August. The project managers say that queueing times for traversing the canal will reduce from 11 hours to three and this means in practice that the number of vessels passing through will double from 49 to 97. The government forecasts an expected revenue

"The project may have devastating ecological consequences for the Mediterranean"

increase from USD 5.1 billion per year at present to USD 13.2 billion in 2023. In a report entitled “Double Trouble” researchers warn of the risks from linking together two biologically divergent bodies of water. “Research, conducted ever since the canal has been in existence, has established that we have seen invasions of nonindigenous species into the Mediterranean,” says Bella S. Galil, who is a researcher at the National Institute of Oceanography in Israel. The project will not only lead to expansion of the canal; it will also contribute to development of an area of 75,000 km2 adjacent to the canal. Egypt is hoping to transform the area into an international hub for logistics that could become a serious competitor to major ports such as Singapore. The government predicts that the project will lead to the creation of a million new jobs. Although experts believe that there’s a good chance the canal will benefit the Egyptian economy in the long term, it will also validate Sisi’s position as president. “Sisi is seeking a legitimate political direction and is not behaving like a military ruler, which is what he actually is,” says Mohamed Elmenshawy, researcher at the Middle East Institute and columnist for Egyptian daily Al Shorouk News. Elmenshawy has said that the Egyptian business community is critical of the increasing militarisation of the economy. “Many people within the business community oppose the expansion of the canal because they feel that they cannot compete with the armed forces who do not need to pay tax and also have low salary costs.” Despite the differences of opinion regarding the project, there has been almost no discussion of the environmental impact, since unemployment in the country is at 13 per cent and a quarter of the population is living in extreme poverty. “Talking about environmental impact with regard to infrastructure projects is a luxury that no one can afford in Egypt,” says Elmenshawy. The Suez Canal is at sea level and therefore has no locks. Since it has capacity for large vessels, its proportion of traffic between Asia and the east coast of America has increased from 30 per cent four years ago to 42 per cent last year. At the same time neighbouring Nicaragua, which at one time was dismissed as a potential option for a canal due to the risks of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, is fulfilling a dream from the 1800s. In July, the government in Managua announced the construction of a 278-km canal linking the Pacific with the Atlantic via the Brito river, Lake Nicaragua and other rivers on the Atlantic side. Since it is situated at sea level, no locks will be needed. There was huge doubt among shipowners when rumours began to circulate about a canal in Nicaragua three times longer than the Panama Canal and sponsored by little-known Chinese investors. But as a sign of expanded Chinese interest in the peninsula, Chinese businessmen from the state-owned China Harbour

Boats in the port of Miami.

"In the long term Panama will become the most important logistics hub in our part of the world"

Engineering Company said in August that they were examining the possibilities of investing in a fourth set of locks along the Panama Canal. So for the time being it’s best to transport a box from Guangdong in China to New York, first by boat to Los Angeles or Long Beach and then the final stretch by rail. Their business plan is based on a large percentage of trade between Asia and the east coast and gulf coast of America being redirected from the ports of California to the canal. This would also mean ports on the east cost of America, such as Miami, Savannah and Charleston, receiving significantly more traffic. As a result, coal producers in North and South America would see new markets opening up. Currently, 65 per cent of traffic to or from the USA goes via the Panama Canal, and American industry is now hoping to shorten transport times and as far as possible eliminate wasted time from vessels having to wait in queues in the canal. As the new gigantic container vessels fully loaded are too big for the existing locks, they can only dock at two ports on the American east coast, Norfolk in Virginia and Baltimore, and consequently many American ports have begun overhauling their facilities. They are naturally scrutinising the potential to get involved and compete for traffic. Roughly 2,000 km north of Panama City, as the crow flies, a parallel construction project is under way at PortMiami, aimed at enabling the port to accept post-Panamax ships as soon as the expansion of the Panama Canal is complete. PortMiami is

48

increasing the water depth in its harbour from 44 feet to 50-52 feet and widening a section of the entrance canal. In order to increase freight and improve efficiency, a new port tunnel has been constructed to increase lorry traffic and a rail link to FCC’s railyard close to the airport. It is costing USD 1.3 billion. Although there has been criticism of the huge costs, the equation is simple for PortMiami’s director Juan Kuryla: “The larger the vessels, the more freight and hence the more jobs.” “If you have a port today and you don’t have capacity to take the new large vessels, you will soon not have any vessels to take,” he adds. Many products heading for southern Florida as their final destination arrive at Savannah and are then sent on by rail or lorry. IKEA even has a distribution centre there. And that’s exactly the traffic that Kuryla wants to attract with the new deep-water harbour at PortMiami. “And because IKEA has two large stores in southern Florida, they should also use this route,” he continues. “I am convinced that in the long term Panama will become the most important logistics hub in our part of the world. I see Panama as a port with terminals in two oceans and that’s unique,” says Alberto Alemán, CEO of the Panama Canal Authority. “We are confident that we are heading in the right direction and therefore we are examining the possibility of both a third and a fourth waterway and even bigger locks, so that they can allow big supertankers and even the biggest cruise vessels to pass through,” he continues.

Hanoi travel tips: TRAVEL TIPS

Where to go and what to see in 48 hours Vietnam's bustling capital charms with great food, fine architecture and surprisingly serene green spaces. Nick Boulos braves the traffic to explore. BY: NICK BOULOS | THE INDEPENDENT | THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

Travel essentials Why go now? Vietnam's frenetic but charmingly low-rise capital is an increasingly popular stop-over for a range of Asian and Australian destinations, now that direct flights from the UK are possible. Hanoi is also within easy reach of many of the country's geographical and cultural treats. Less than three hours to the east is Unesco-protected Halong Bay, with some 2,000 craggy karsts soaring from the emerald-green Gulf of Tonkin. To the mountainous west are the terraced rice paddies and hill tribes of Sapa. And Hanoi offers great value for money. Touch down Vietnam Airlines has the only direct flights between the UK and Vietnam. The twice-weekly departures from Gatwick land at Hanoi's Noi Bai airport around 11 hours later. Other airlines offer indirect connections with more frequent departures. I travelled with Singapore Airlines, which offers flights from Heathrow and Manchester from ÂŁ575 via Singapore; and the specialist tour operator Inside Vietnam Tours, which offers tailored trips across the country from ÂŁ940pp. The airport is 45km north of the city. Bus No 7 departs from outside the terminal every 20 minutes, between 5am and 10pm, and terminates an hour later

at the central Kim Ma bus station on Pho Giang Vo. A one-way ticket costs only 5,000 Vietnamese Dong. A taxi to the city centre costs 160,000d. Journey time is around 40 minutes. Those arriving by train from elsewhere in Vietnam will pull into Hanoi's central station on Le Duan Street. Get your bearings The name Hanoi roughly translates as City in a Bend of the River. It is located on the banks of the Song Hong (Red River) in northern Vietnam, and was first inhabited by Emperor Ly Thai To in 1010. An exotic and chaotic city, it is home to 6.5 million people and (it's said) more than four million motorbikes. Crossing the road will test your nerve. To the north is the Old Quarter, a district of narrow alleys that's the traditional guild district. It still thrives with vendors and is where visitors are likely to spend most of their time. The days of French occupation during the 19th century are still redolent, particularly in the leafy French Quarter which is characterised by Europeanstyle boulevards. Between the two you will find the small but scenic Hoan Kiem Lake. Check in The Hotel De L'Opera at 29 Trang Tien, housed in the former Ministry of Trade and Commerce, is

51

The wooden red-painted Huc Bridge over the Hoan Kiem Lake connects the shore and the Jade Island on which Ngoc Son Temple is.

Details from the Ngoc Son Temple.

"The Ngoc Son Temple is dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao, who led the triumphant battle against the Mongols in the 13th century" one of the city's grandest places to stay. Rooms are contemporary, splashed with colourful Asian textiles. Doubles from US$154, room only. A decent mid-range option, the 70-room Medallion Hanoi at 11 Ma May is handily located in the Old Quarter, a short walk away from Hoan Kiem Lake Double rooms from US$45, including breakfast. Also nearby is the absurdly good value Camel City Hotel at 8/50 Dao Duy Tu Lane. Rooms are a little cramped but clean and there's free wi-fi. Doubles from US $15, including breakfast.

Day One Take a view The fifth floor City View Cafe at 7 Dinh Tien Hoang overlooks the serene Hoan Kiem Lake. Order a taro milkshake and enjoy the strange juxtaposition of honking motorbikes swarming around the chaotic roundabout below you. Take a hike Complete the 2km loop around Hoan Kiem Lake.

52

Starting from outside the City View Cafe, head south passing Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre at 57B Dihn Tien Hoang, which hosts evening performances of this old Vietnamese artform. Further on, you reach the small scarlet Huc bridge that leads to the idyllic Ngoc Son Temple perched on an island in the lake. It's dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao, who led the triumphant battle against the Mongols in the 13th century. You can pause for thought at the Martyrs' Monument, honouring those who died fighting for Vietnam's independence, then continue along the lake's east shore on the shady pathways lined with strangler figs. Time your walk during the early morning and you may catch tai chi enthusiasts in action. Lunch on the run Bun cha is a popular midday meal in northern Vietnam, consisting of grilled pork in a tangy vinegar-based sauce and vermicelli noodles. Try it for 35,000d at the Bun Cha restaurant at 27 Dao Duy Tu, a great spot from which to watch street vendors and passing rickshaws.

Window shopping The Old Quarter is, essentially, a big market that still comprises centuries-old guild streets that specialise in particular products. Head to Hang Dau for shoes and the southern end of Hang Bong for silk and quality tailors. The city's high-end shopping is concentrated around the Opera House on Trang Tien while the indoor Dong Xuan market at Cau Dong offers a mix of cut-price goods. Out to brunch Slurp your way through a big bowl of pho, Vietnam's national dish of soup noodles. Try it at Pho Gia Truyen at 49 Bat Dan. It's been serving one dish since 1940, cooked in vast cauldrons stocked with chopped chilies. Be prepared to queue. Cultural afternoon The Temple of Literature at Van Mieu was built in 1070 to honour the Chinese philosopher Confucius. Students flock here to pray for exam success. Elsewhere, visit the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology on Nguyen Van Huyen focusing on the country's 54 ethnic groups. A walk in the park The botanical gardens of Bach Thao, 3 Hoang Hoa Tham is a retreat of orchids, palms and banyan trees that's a popular backdrop for newlywed photographs. Icing on the cake Flanked by soldiers, the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh on Duong Hung Vuong attracts long lines of devoted nationals keen to pay their respects to the iconic communist leader, whose embalmed body is on display. Next door is the marigold-yellow Presidential Palace, built in the early 20th century as the residence for the French Governor of Indochina. Ho Chi Minh rejected it as too grand and built his own humble lodgings within the grounds – a wooden house on stilts, which still stands today.

Flight to Chicago Chicago, with its population of 3 million, is a tourist magnet for both Americans and foreign visitors. People are a little friendlier and have a bit more time to spare here than in New York. This old industrial city is hip. We look down on the city from skyscrapers, discover its architecture from the water and enjoy excellent dining. BY: AGNETA RICKARDSSON

L

arge parts of Chicago were destroyed by a fire in 1871. This left large areas for creative architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Daniel Burnham to redesign. The first skyscraper was completed in 1885 and the architectural style was dubbed “the Chicago School”. Today there are more than 250 different guided architectural tours on offer led by specialists from the Architecture Foundation. Tours along the Chicago River take in well-known buildings in downtown Chicago and several new areas undergoing transformation. Developers who secure contracts to create housing, offices and restaurants must also ensure that the area along the Chicago River is made easily accessible and attractive for everyone. We go up three of the city’s skyscrapers. Near the hub of Union Station stands architect Bruce Graham’s 442-m tall skyscraper. It was completed in 1974, commissioned by Sears Roebuck & Co, the biggest mail order firm in the world at that time. It is now owned by the Willis company and has consequently been renamed the Willis Tower. For 25 years it was the tallest building in the world. Now it’s not even the tallest in the USA. The northern tower of the World Trade Center won that battle, after many harsh and derisive altercations. The decision was made by the international

organisation Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which ironically enough is based in Chicago. On the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower, named Skydeck Chicago, a small boy stands in a queue with his mother. He asks in a loud voice. “Mum, you said that an elephant has stood out there on the glass. Did the elephant come up in the lift?” Slightly hysterical laughter circulates among the queue. The advertising states that the glass cube is strong enough to bear an elephant. The glass cubes are, as it were, stuck on the OUTSIDE of the skyscraper. We ask Vice President Randal A Stancik if you can book a corporate meeting in the glass cubes. “Absolutely, we have Chicago’s coolest corporate happenings. Once the final tourist of the day has left the building, a group can come in for dinner or snacks on the glass floor. We can also serve breakfast before we open to the public.” Beside Lake Michigan towers another familiar steel and glass structure. The black skyscraper is recognisable from its two white antennas, but not so much by name, which since last year is now 360° Chicago and no longer the John Hancock

Observatory. However, the view remains, as do the restaurants, bars and the queue for the absurdly great window view from the ladies’ toilets. Its new attraction TILT has just opened – eight people at a time can be “tilted” out from the 94th floor on a support of steel and glass. Downtown, close to the Chicago River, gleams the glass and stainless steel Trump Tower. Donald Trump had intended to have the world’s tallest skyscraper built, but following the attack on the World Trade Center on 11th September he contented himself with a structure of 423 metres, including the spire on the roof. The building houses a five-star hotel, restaurants, spa, exclusive apartments and a parking garage. Restaurant Sixteen, with its chef Thomas Lents, holds two stars in the Michelin Guide. Dinner, lunch and brunch – all are popular and booking is essential. It is delicious, calm and quiet and the view is beautiful even though it is only from the 16th floor. If you decide to hold a conference here, the venue has multiple chefs and rooms. Chicago is one of the USA’s foremost culinary destinations. Gourmets have 25 Michelin-starred establishments to choose from. A raw, medium or well-done steak is almost obligatory in Chicago. If you haven’t already been to Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse, that’s where you need to go; everything is served perfectly, and celebrities and

58

businessmen generally outnumber the tourists. Healthy, wholesome alternatives also pop up in the city, partly in the form of chains such as Pret and hardcore healthy-eating establishments such as Raw Bistro. Ethnic cuisine is available in abundance - why not take a trip to Andersonville for Swedish dining at Tre kronor? The selection of sausages and pizzas is probably the best in the USA. They have their own style of pizza, deepdish, which was invented in 1943 at Pizzeria Uno; also served at Due, which is close by, and at many more of Chicago’s 2,200 pizzerias. We book with Chicago Pizza Tours; for just over five years now they have been providing insight into the world of pizzas for the uninitiated - crunchy, soft, thick and thin bases – and mmm, they even have dessert pizzas. There is also a guided tour covering everything from the bears at the zoo to the alley where bank robber John Dillinger was shot by FBI agents. It goes without saying that Chicago offers much more than great architecture and a smörgåsbord of restaurants. Go and check it out for yourself. This year is 50 years since SAS made its first flight to Chicago. It took 10.5 hours with one stop. Today the journey is both substantially quicker and cheaper. Chicago may also be shaking off its label as second city – not everything is better in New York. The city’s objective is to achieve annual visitor numbers of 55 million by 2020.

Smoke detectors that talk to each other – save lives!

A reliable fire detection system is one of the most critical elements in making your home safe. A smart connected smoke and fire detection system is the best option for minimising injury and damage if the unthinkable happens. Fires usually start with smoke. Smoke is toxic and makes you sleepy. That’s why it is vital you wake up as soon as possible. Multiple smoke detectors – ideally one in every room, or at least one on each floor – are crucial for early warning.

Detectors – a safety chain

All detectors are interconnected, so if one picks up smoke it alerts the others, triggering all sirens simultaneously. The detectors also emit voice messages, allowing everyone in the property to locate the source of the smoke or fire. They are also connected to a Verisure monitoring centre. A text message alerts you immediately to any incident.
