HISTORY IEVA REKL AI TYT E

WATER IN THE MEDIEVAL HISPANIC SOCIETY Economic, Social and Religious Implications

The starting point for this book was in two sessions on water and hydraulics in medieval Iberia at the 20th International Medieval Congress, held in Leeds in 2013. The aim of this compilation of studies is to provide a glimpse into the rich complexity of approaches to water in medieval and postmedieval Spain. Given the historical circumstances, environments as different as the Muslim state of alAndalus and the domains of the Catholic rulers are all examined in the papers that make up this book. This study provides fresh insights into the state-building process in Sweden. During this transitional period, many far-reaching administrative reforms were carried out, and the Swedish state developed into a prime example of the “power-state”. In early modern studies, agency has long remained in the shadow of the study of structures and institutions. State building in Sweden was a more diversified and personalized process than has previously been assumed. Numerous individuals were also important actors in the process. Shahr-i Sokhta; Mundigak; Mehrgarh, Nausharo, Sibri, Dauda-damb; Chanhudaro; Ahar, Balathal, Gilund; Kalibangan; Rojdi The Corpus of Indus Seals and Inscriptions (CISI) has as its purpose to make available for research, in as good images as possible, all seals and inscriptions relating to the Indus Civilization, which flourished in Pakistan and northwestern India c. 2600–1900 BCE. This material is fundamental for the research of the poorly understood script, language, and religion of the Indus Civilization, and a major outlet for its art. The seals and other types of inscribed artefacts are important also for the study of the Harappan social, political and economic organization, including administrative practices, external cultural contacts, internal trade and various techniques, such as seal carving. M . A . CASTRÉN ED. TIMO SALMI N E N

ITINERARIA 1–2 Matthias Alexander Castrén (1813–1852) was by far the most significant Finnish linguist of the 19th century. In addition to being a linguist he was also a multidisciplinary scholar, equally versatile in the fields of ethnography, folklore, mythology, archaeology, history and human geography. This two-part volume contains the reports and previously unpublished diaries written by Castrén in Finnish Lapland in 1838, Finnish and Russian Karelia in 1839, Finnish Lapland and Arctic Russia in 1841–1844, and in Siberia in 1845–1849. The introductory article contextualizes them in the intellectual and scholarly environment of the time. HANDWRITTEN NEWSPAPERS An Alternative Medium during the Early Modern and Modern Periods

CL I VE TO L LEY

HARD IT IS TO STIR MY TONGUE Raiding the Otherworld for the Elixir of Poetry Where does poetic inspiration come from? This has been a puzzle for as long as poetry has been around. This book surveys some of the ways poets have thought of their craft, focusing particularly on medieval sources which see the Otherworld as a fastness of poetic inspiration, whence it has to be raided. Clive Tolley is a docent in the folkloristics department of the University of Turku in Finland, specialising in comparative mythology.

This book is focusing on handwritten newspapers as an alternative medium from a wide interdisciplinary and international perspective. The primary focus is on handwritten newspapers as a social practice. The case studies contextualize the source materials in relation to political, cultural, literary, and economic history. From the 16th to the 20th centuries, handwritten newspapers changed from an expensive public commodity and a social gift for the elites to an internal or clandestine medium of communication for non-elite groups. HOMILIES IN CONTEXT As skilled rhetoricians, the early Christian preachers knew that in order to reach the hearts of their listeners, they need to know their operational environment, and use a language familiar to their audience. In a way, a modern scholar trying to interpret these homilies meets the same challenge: in order to understand homilies delivered more than a thousand years ago, we need to try to understand their original context as well as possible. Articles in this volume explore the importance of context for early Christian homilies. ON THE LEGACY OF LUTHERANISM IN FINLAND Societal Perspectives

ED. PEKKA KÄRK KÄI N E N AN D OLL I - PEKKA VAI N I O

APPREHENDING LOVE Theological and Philosophical Inquiries This volume collects together articles, which engage a variety of themes related to human and divine love. The title of this book “apprehending love” employs the notion of apprehension and especially its medieval background. For example, Martin Luther built his understanding of justification around this concept, which, on the one hand, refers to intellectual comprehension but, on the other hand, means becoming one with the object itself. In faith, Christ becomes not only the outward object of our faith, but its proper subject.

This research analyses the societal legacy of Lutheranism in Finland. This volume addresses different societal areas which have been significantly influenced by Lutheranism, but also demonstrate how Lutheranism and its institutions have themselves adapted to society. As part of an ongoing religious turn in humanities and social sciences research, this book argues that it is necessary to take religion into greater account to more fully understand current societies and cultures. This multidisciplinary bibliography comprises research on migration, integration, ethnic relations, and related subjects published between the late eighteenth century and the present. The studies included are related to migration from, to, or within Finland. A selection of studies on national minorities is also included. In addition, the bibliography contains an introductory chapter that outlines trends in Finnish migration research since 1970 and provides suggestions for future research themes. In 2015 and 2016 Finland became one of the main net receivers of asylum seekers relative to its population size in Europe and the national reception system was put under severe stress. Housing is one of the key social issues for asylum seekers and refugees, but also for the receiving society in general. However, the question what goes on at the level of everyday reality as new asylum seekers enter the housing market remains largely unanswered in the Finnish context. Based on in depth interviews with nearly forty asylum seekers. Migration Institute of Finland • Publication 24 • ISBN 978-952-7167-69-4 • ISSN 23433507 • Soft • 64 pp. • 2019 • EUR 15

TOWARDS A POSTSTRUCTURAL POLITICAL ECONOMY OF TOURISM A critical sustainability perspective on destination development in the Finnish North

CULTURE, INSTITUTIONS AND POWER

To increase sustainability in tourism destinations, tourism research has highlighted the need for collective economic agency in destination localities. To date, research has tended to draw on multiple, often contradicting, theoretical perspectives in an attempt to clarify how collective agency in tourism destinations should be best organized in order to foster social justice and ecological sustainability.

A predominant academic question is how and why the development paths of municipalities and regions take certain forms. Geographers and economists have investigated the dynamics of how local institutional conditions and their local mobilisation can affect development outcomes and how development is determined by “structural” forces such as state- and EU-based regulations and globalisation of the economy. Thus, the notion that historical sensitiveness and contextdependency are essential factors in local and regional development. LIMITS OF LOCALISM Institutional perspectives on communicativeness, neoliberalization and sustainability in Finnish spatial planning

Biodiversity patterns in streams have been shown to be structured by direct physical properties of the local habitat and by proxy features on the catchment and regional scales, but one problem has been related to moderate explanatory power using such traditional environmental variables. This study investigates biodiversity patterns in northern streams by introducing the use of geographical proxy variables of environmental features and dispersal. Municipalities play an increasingly important role in spatial planning in Finland. During the last decades, planning powers have been transferred to the local level while deconstructing the mechanisms of top-down steering. Local communities and stakeholders are seen to counterbalance the circumscribed bureaucratic control of land use. This thesis analyzes the transformation of Finnish spatial planning with a focus on the relationship between public steering and market actors.
