KRISTIINA SILVAN

LEGACIES OF THE KOMSOMOL

Afterlife of the Leninist Communist Youth League and Contemporary State-Affiliated Youth Activism in Post-Soviet Belarus and Russia Government-organized youth mobilization in an authoritarian political setting is subject to active debate in academia and the policy-making community. The dissertation addresses this empirical and theoretical gap by examining changes and continuities in the sphere of state-affiliated youth activism in postSoviet Belarus and Russia. It explores the little-known afterlife of the republic-level organizations of the Leninist Communist Youth League of the Soviet Union, the Komsomol. Societas Scientiarum Fennica • Commentationes Scientiarum Socialium 81 • ISBN 978-951-653-478-0 • ISSN 0355-256X • Soft • 115 + app. pp. • € 30

VEERA LAINE

NATIONALISM AS AN ARGUMENT IN CONTEMPORARY RUSSIA

Four perspectives on language in action This dissertation analyses the uses of the concept of nationalism in Russia from a historical perspective. During the years from 2000 to 2020, the state leadership in Russia adopted increasingly authori tarian policies vis-à-vis society, and started to portray Russia as being under an external threat. The annexation of Crimea and the onset of the war in Ukraine in 2014 solidified the way in which recent political changes in Russia were characterized as “growing nationalism”. ALEKSI HUHTA

TOWARD A RED MELTING POT

The Racial Thinking of Finnish-American Radicals, 1900–1938 This dissertation examines the racial thinking of Finnish radicals in the early twentieth century United States. It studies how and why Finnish radical immigrants used racial ideas to describe and explain human difference. It also examines how and why Finnish thinking on race changed during this time. The study focuses on the time period between 1900 and the late 1930s. During these years, Finns formed one of the largest immigrant groups in the Socialist Party, the IWW and the Communist Party. SOCIAL AND MATERIAL WORLD OF MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN (C. 1200–1650) VILLAGES IN SOUTHERN FINLAND During the Middle Ages and early modern period, most of the people in Southern Finland lived in villages, but quite little has been known about their everyday life. The increasing archaeological material offers a great new opportunity to study the material culture in the villages, and at the same time discuss the social life of the inhabitants. This study examines medieval villages as a social and material environment through the examples given by five villages located in Uusimaa, Southern Finland. CLASSICAL STUDIES ILKKA KUIVALAINEN

PORTRAYAL OF POMPEIAN BACCHUS This book is about the Portrayal of Bacchus in Pompeii. The topic is much studied, and the ancient texts and works of art are mainly well known. The intention of this study has been to collect the various factors together, not only some examples. This idea came from the need to understand better the wall paintings and sculptures in the House of Marcus Lucretius (IX 3. 5.24). TANGIBLE RELIGION

Materiality Of Domestic Cult Practices from Antiquity to Early Modern Era In ancient and premodern societies from archaic Greece and imperial Rome, through the Middle Ages up to Reformed Northern Europe – most homes contained select objects with a religious or ritual significance. Such objects, with a variable degree of sacrality, ranges from altars to everyday utensils. Such objects differed from the most venerated sacred cult items safeguarded in churches, and seen only during certain ceremonies: domestic cult objects may have been touched and used on an every-day basis. CATALOGUE OF GALICIAN FOLKTALES The Galician Catalogue typologically records Galician tales within the European oral tradition. It orders them under the internationally recognized ATU (Aarne–Thompson–Uther) index system, uses regional catalogues classification, and includes new cataloguing proposals for uncatalogued ethno-texts. Galicia's rich narrative tradition of the past has now practically disappeared, which has led the editor to also index tales of which there is only one version. VERSIFICATION

Metrics in Practice Versification describes the marriage of language and poetic form through which poetry is produced. Formal principles, such as metre, alliteration, rhyme, or parallelism, take precedence over syntax and prosody, resulting in expressions becoming organised as verse rather than prose. The aesthetic appeal of poetry is often linked to the potential for this process to seem mysterious or almost magical, not to mention the interplay of particular expressions with forms and expectations. SOUNDS SANCTIFIED

Essays on Music and the Sacred Music converges with the sacred in multiple ways. The term itself derives from mythology and, depending on the belief systems, may be used to separate beautiful or otherwise valuable sounds from others, be these deemed noise or blasphemous. Sounds Sanctified comprises essays where the sacred in music – and vice versa – is approached in the context of epics, architecture, hymns and church music, and extreme metal. FROM TEXT TO PERSUASION

Festschrift in Honour of Professor Lauri Thurén on the Occasion of his 60th Birthday Altogether fourteen essays in honour of Professor Lauri Thurén contribute to developing and applying methods for the study of the Bible and its world. In particular, many contributions focus on the biblical text as narrative, on rhetorical research and text's means of persuasion, which are special interests of the celebrant. The authors also explore various aspects of how the biblical texts were read in subsequent centuries, first in the Early Church and then in nascent Protestantism. Memory, Identity, and Change: The Case of Holy Sites in Southern Jordan This study concentrates on three concepts: memory, identity and change. The study is about the concept of memory in the formation of a communal identity. Individual experiences and emotions are given interpretation and meaning on the basis of the individual’s own sphere of knowledge, taught, and transmitted by his own culture and society. This memory then becomes the shared idea and ideal of the community, and when transmitted to the next generations it overcomes the boundaries of time.
