Hudson Park High

Laai’qah Bedford matriculated in 2021 at Hudson Park High and was announced as the Eastern Cape’s top learner from the Class of 2021. Congratulations Laai’qah. Were you expecting the results, or did they take you by surprise? I would say it was a combination of both. I expected some of my results, but others caught me by surprise. I knew I did well, well enough to get distinctions because I could feel that I wrote competently. However, I did not for a second think that my marks for Physics and Accounting would be in the high 90s.

Tell us the study method your used that made you receive top marks? The study method is called active recalling. This consisted of frequently quizzing myself using past papers, making use of flash cards and “teaching” the work to a group of students that was not there. Active recalling also entails spaced repetition and interleaving, all of which can be explained by YouTube videos.

What was your greatest challenge in matric? My greatest challenge was definitely self-doubt. I believe this stemmed from fear. I have always achieved my academic goals in lower grades so I was just afraid that I would not reach them when it mattered most, seeing that I needed to do well to get into my desired course at university.

What is your favourite subject and why? My favourite subject is Mathematics. I would rather do 10 pages of maths than a single essay for English. Numbers, although sometimes challenging, come easy to me. I find satisfaction in solving long mathematical problems or questions.

Who is your role model and why? As cliché as this may sound, it is without a doubt my mother. She is a single mother who raised two children on her own. I have witnessed her struggle, yet she never gave up. She shows strength and resilience in the face of adversity. It is because of her that I refuse to give up on my desires and dreams. What kind of encouragement did you have and from whom? I received encouragement from one of my best friends, Musa Jaxa. We frequently have conversations expressing our goals for the near and far future. Whenever I lacked motivation and the drive to do what was required of me, he would always remind me why I am doing it. He would also remind me of the consequences, should I not perform the way I needed to.

Who was your favourite teacher? My favourite teacher was my Business Studies teacher, Mrs Poovan. She was a motherly figure to me at school. I despised Business Studies because I do not enjoy subjects that are content heavy and Business Studies has an immense number of facts, but Mrs Poovan somehow made the subject enjoyable. She really went above and beyond for her students and made the content easier to study. Mrs Poovan wholeheartedly believed in all her students and pushed us to achieve our best in Business Studies. What are you going to study in 2022 and why? I have decided to study for a degree in Actuarial Sciences. It is my love for numbers that steered me down this pathway. From what I have heard, it is a difficult course, but I do enjoy a challenge.

What is your message to the Class of 2022 who want to achieve the best like you did? The most important advice is to manage your time extremely well. You must always be aware of what is required of you, what is due when, what you are going to study and on which day, how much time you are going to spend doing whatever homework or assignment and so forth. The more organised and detailed you are when it comes to planning your days and weeks, the better. You will also need to live a balanced life. As important as your results are, you cannot expect to work every waking moment towards it. I would suggest that you make time for rest, family and friends, activities that bring you enjoyment and exercise. This helps in preventing you from burning out sooner than you expected. Lastly, surround yourself with friends who have goals similar to yours. There will be days where you have no motivation and drive to study. This is where those friends come in handy as you can then feed off of their discipline and motivation to kickstart your own again.

ULRICH LE ROUX (PAARL BOYS’ HIGH)

TOP MATRIKULANT LANDSWYD Wie is jou rolmodel en hoekom? My ouer broer. My ma het my baie ondersteun met Wiskunde ekstra-klasse. Wiskunde. Ek hou baie van syfers en probleemoplossing.

Wie was jou gunsteling onderwyser? Ek het geen spesifieke onderwyser nie, almal by HJS was regtig goed. 1. My prestasie in die 2021 NSS eksamen. 2. Ek was in 2021 ‘n skoolprefek. 3. Ek gaan Aktuariële Wetenskap by Stellenbosch studeer.

Hosted at Novolazarevskaya, the Russian scientific base, the students’ home for the next 5 days. The students will spend their time learning about the Antarctic as a whole, the International Antarctic Treaty, exploring its beauty, hiking, taking part in science experiments, participating in a litter cleaning initiative and most importantly, learning about themselves.

On their return, we will follow their progress with campaign implementation in their communities and stand true to the motto of Matrics in Antarctica: Less talking and observation and more action and results. We do not need more activists; we need change makers. Matrics in Antarctica is a program founded by Manser with the primary objective of using Antarctica as a backdrop and the most exotic of environmental conversation starters. Manser’s belief that we need to move from “talking” to “doing” is something most on the planet would agree is necessary, but alas nobody practices. “We are only handing out more mops while more taps are being opened and the house continues to flood,” says Manser. How can this be a mindset we have continued to have for over four decades,” Manser added.

To understand the impact of the pandemic on the NSC learners of 2021, one needs to consider what normally happens in many schools over the final two years of Grades 11 and 12. Eli van Schoor (Dux Learner) 6 Distinctions

Desmond Ayeh 5 Distinctions

Grade 11 is spent primarily on ensuring that learners have a firm grasp and full understanding of key concepts and content in their respective subjects of study. The first term of Grade 12 is usually spent on completion of the curriculum and for the rest of the year, learners are exposed to applications of the concepts and content. A significant amount of time is spent on perfection of examination techniques, like judgement of time, or what to do should you come across a question that you don’t know how to answer. Finally, there is substantial revision to provide students with sufficient exposure to a variety of assessment approaches and hence opportunities to prepare for the final examinations.

“The journey for Grade 12 candidates of 2021 was somewhat different with school closures from as early as March 2020 and then sporadically throughout the year, continuing right through their Grade 12 year. They experienced disruptive change of an unprecedented nature within a relatively short space of time,” explains Anne Oberholzer, CEO of the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

“Teaching in 2020 focused primarily on ensuring that Grade 12 learners were given as much attention as possible to ensure that they could succeed in their final examinations. Most Grade 11 learners in 2020 spent much less time at school and were essentially the test cases of the greatest online tuition experiment of our time. Despite its varied rate of success, one thing is certain – the use of technology in education is here to stay, as it should be. “There’s no doubt that online learning cannot replace a good teacher in person, however, it is far better than no teacher, and no guidance. The journey to uncover the true worth of technology in the classroom, has begin in earnest and it will be the teachers with initiative, imagination and creativity that will light the way. With the initial fear of unfamiliar technology now behind us, technology will find its rightful place in the education of our children. If there is one good thing to come out of the pandemic, let it be the value that technology can bring to the classroom and particularly those children currently deprived of a quality education,” says Oberholzer.
