Become a CELTA English teacher and visit the world

The world of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)

Such a confusing array of choices for your future studies can be quite overwhelming after focusing on getting through those stressful final exams. Maybe you’d like to take a breather and spread your wings a bit before committing to an expensive degree course which may not be the right one for you?

The world of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) may just be the ticket you need to discover the world and yourself a little better. Getting a qualification to teach English to foreigners can open many doors for you:

• You can use it as a side-hustle, earning money for yourself or your family while you’re studying.

• You can use it as a means to finance overseas travel and adventures.

• You can make it your career.

The most respected and widely recognised entry-level TEFL qualification available is the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) which will put you in the running for better pay rates and better language schools to work at. We are trained and endorsed by Cambridge English to run the CELTA course at our language school, Good Hope Studies, in Cape Town.

Important Info:

• You have to be over 18.

• English doesn’t have to be your mother tongue, but you must have good command of the language. (C1 level)

• You teach real students in your training which equips you with many classroom management and teaching skills, unlike on other TEFL courses. This authentic teaching experience is what future employers look for when hiring staff.

• The course is only 4 weeks long and then you are qualified to teach and to start earning – a very good investment indeed!

• This qualification allows you to teach English to foreigners both online and faceto-face around the world.

• We provide information on how to find work locally or overseas.

Finding success if your university admission is declined

The reality of the admissions process is that only around 210,000 first-year students are accepted in public universities annually, and only a small number of students will receive an acceptance letter from their preferred institution for their preferred degree.

Dr Meyer urges parents and students to remember that a university or college acceptance is not the only – or even best – route to a fulfilling and successful career.

1

Technical and Vocational Training Colleges:

These offer specialised education in various fields such as engineering, healthcare, information technology and the arts. These institutions often have more flexible admission requirements and provide practical, hands-on experience that can lead directly to employment.

Grade 11 and Matric is fraught with high-pressure, stressful moments, not least of all the application process to the further educational institutions they hope to attend after the Matric results are done and dusted.

Starting in recent weeks, thousands of Grade 11 and Matric learners may have sadly received notification that they have not been accepted to the public university of their choice. Every year, only a limited list of applicants are successful, which has a massive impact on the future plans of these declined learners and their parents, who don’t know what their further options are.

Online forums are awash with parents looking for guidance on how to navigate this situation, both in terms of what they must do now, as well as anxious to help their child cope with the disappointment.

According to Dr Linda Meyer, MD at IIE Rosebank College and SAQA Board member, it’s important to put the matter into perspective and, first, not take it personally or view it as a failure.

“Of course, it is frustrating not to be able to cross this item off your to-do-list, especially if you have worked very hard and were not accepted while many of your peers already received offers. But view this as a temporary hurdle rather than a permanent roadblock,” she says.

“The journey to success is rarely a straight line, and flexibility and resilience are vital to navigating it successfully.

3 5

Bridging Courses and Foundation Programmes:

For students who may need to meet the direct entry requirements for university, these programmes are an excellent option and are designed to help students build the necessary skills and knowledge to qualify for their desired courses in future.

2

Distance Learning and Online Education:

This form of education has become increasingly popular and accessible. These programmes offer flexibility for students to learn at their own pace and often at a lower cost than traditional universities. Many reputable institutions offer accredited online courses and degrees

Private Higher Education Institutions:

Not government funded, Private Higher Education Institutions remain a valuable alternative to studying at a public university, and their graduates are in high demand in the workplace. It is essential, however, to make sure that you confirm your qualifications. SAQA must register all qualifications in South Africa, and the private institution must appear on their list of licenced providers. The Council of Higher Education oversees public and private higher education providers as the responsible quality council.

4

Internships and Learnerships:

Get valuable on-the-job training and experience in these programmes that allow students to earn while they learn, gaining practical skills and industry insights that can be highly advantageous in the job market. Contact a SETA for further information.

Dr Meyer has reassuring words for all students applying for higher education over the next few months, “By exploring alternative education options, managing stress effectively, and keeping an open mind, students can find fulfilling and rewarding career opportunities regardless of the outcome of their university applications. The journey to success is rarely a straight line, and flexibility and resilience are vital to navigating it successfully.”

Forge new horizons in the hospitality sector

As the massive growth of the cruise liner industry continues, both in South Africa and globally, unprecedented opportunities and career avenues are arising for hospitality and culinary professionals – and although working on cruise liners is demanding and not for everyone, exceptional opportunities are arising for young professionals with a spirit of adventure and looking for international exposure on the high seas.

According to Renee Hill, Managing Director at ADvTECH’s IIE School of Hospitality & Service Management and Capsicum Culinary Studio, it’s a chance for hospitality loving young South Africans to get paid to explore the world, with their accommodation and meals covered, all while earning in foreign currency and building a global network.

“However, it’s important to acknowledge that this lifestyle isn’t suited for everyone,” says Hill. “Success in this industry requires unwavering professionalism, resilience, and a willingness to thrive in challenging environments.”

This year, Cape Town’s harbour witnessed a surge in cruise ship visits, solidifying its position as a sought-after destination for international liners. As the city continues to enhance its appeal to cruise travellers, opportunities for employment and growth in the industry are expected to continue to flourish both locally and abroad.

When Anzell Human was at high school most of her friends and classmates aspired to become doctors or lawyers or architects. But all Human dreamed of doing was getting into the hospitality industry and work on cruise ships.

According to Hill, the benefits of gaining experience in the cruise industry are truly remarkable.

“Beyond the thrill of exploration, professionals enjoy competitive and sometimes even tax-free salaries in foreign currency, access to free medical care, and generous vacation periods between contracts. Crew members are also entitled to exclusive discounts and perks.”

“ “

For those who embrace the challenges of teamwork, adaptability and customer service with a positive attitude, it’s a great opportunity to carve out a rewarding career among the waves of opportunity.

So, after graduating with matric, she signed up to do a year-long Hospitality Management course during which time she not also gained invaluable work experience at establishments such as Tsogo Sun, Sheraton and Kieviets Kroon Wine Estate, but she also realised she had absolutely made the right decision in her choice of career. “That year really cemented and confirmed my passion for the food and hospitality industry which, 16 years later, I still find very rewarding.”

Despite a hectic schedule, we sat down with Human, over a cup a coffee and a homemade cheese scone and asked her a few questions to find out a bit more about what and who inspires her, her foodie icons and what we’d find in her fridge and pantry at home.

Tell us about your time working on the cruise ships. What was that like? I worked for a number of different companies - Silversea Cruises, MSC Cruises and P&O Cruises, and in various positions including the Shore Excursions department which I enjoyed the most. I gained valuable experience during my time at MSC Cruises in the corporate office where I was part of the operations for the local cruises to the well-known Portuguese Island and Pomene. I travelled to many countries and got to experience many different cultures and nationalities, so now I get to enjoy bringing my international knowledge and experience to South Africa and equipping our students to the high standards of the hospitality industry.

Who or what inspires you?

My parents! They have taught me to always work hard and be honest but also to share what I have with those that are less fortunate. They taught me to show compassion but never be taken for granted; there needs to be a good balance in life. But most of all, they instilled in me the fact that our success is measured by how much love we have for each other as a family and not how much money there is in the bank.

What local or international chefs inspire you?

I am inspired by local chef Corli Botha. She has achieved so much in so little time, and she shows the possibilities there is to be an entrepreneurial chef within the South African landscape.

Do you have a favourite go-to cookbook?

Yes, the old-fashioned Knuppeldik cookbook. I remember my mom having this in her kitchen when I was growing up and it taught me the basics of cooking. But when it comes to events for the family or friends I always refer to our family cookbook where there are recipes from great grandmothers that I do not want to ever lose.

Who are your foodie icons?

In school I became very interested in Jamie Oliver’s cooking because he was one of the first celebrity chefs that became really well known. He was the reason for many of my friends wanting to become chefs. As I have grown older I’ve really come to appreciate the likes of Ina Paarman, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, Reuben Riffel and Nicci Robertson.

If you could have dinner with any famous person who would it be?

I would enjoy a dinner with Mr. Bean. I think life has become so challenging that I would enjoy a night of just endless entertainment. No other purpose or goal than just laughing.

Is there any dish you still want to master?

No, but I love the challenge to try new recipes and if I fail, I will try it over and over until I do get it right. If all else fails I will still call my mother and she always helps with some old school advice, which usually works.

What are the 5 things always in your fridge or pantry?

Eggs, milk, cake flour, chocolate and bacon.

Tips for School Leavers: Navigating the Path Ahead

1. Who you know

People come into your life for a reason, and you never know when your paths may cross again, either personally or professionally. Cherish all relationships and keep in contact with your classmates. These days, alumni often stick together after school, forming valuable relationships in their careers. When looking for a job, ask family and friends for help. Your uncle might have useful connections, and even your fitness coach could know someone. Leveraging your network can lead to unexpected opportunities you might not find otherwise.

2. Your online presence

To stand out from the crowd, your online presence should be exceptional. Clean up your social media accounts—not by removing every picture showing you have a social life, but by ensuring your online image

is one you want to share with potential employers. Create a LinkedIn profile to showcase your skills and use it to build professional connections.

3. Work on your soft skills

Key soft skills include communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. These skills are essential for career success. No job or career exists without a human element, and without strong soft skills, it can be challenging to manage others and navigate difficult situations.

4. Your personal brand

Today’s professionals need both online and offline branding. Your digital footprint is crucial. Did you know you’ll likely be googled before a job interview? Admissions officers and employers use social media to gain a holistic view of applicants.

Personal branding isn’t just for job seekers; it’s a lifelong effort requiring regular maintenance. At the school level, your personal brand includes:

• Arriving to class on time and your work ethic.

• How you present yourself daily.

• How you engage with your school community, both in person and online.

5. Know what you’re good at Your subject choices and grades determine the type of tertiary institution you can apply to, but understanding your strengths and weaknesses is vital. Ask yourself: “What comes naturally to me? What do I enjoy learning about? What’s important to me in life? How do I see my future?”

Choosing between a BCom in Law and an LLB can be challenging, especially when both paths offer unique opportunities and advantages. Here’s a comparison to help you decide which route aligns best with your career goals.

BCom in Law

• Blend of Law and Business: Ideal if you’re interested in both law and business, offering a balanced mix of both fields.

• Specialization Opportunities: Offers the chance to specialize in a specific area of law that you’re passionate about.

• Kickstart Your Legal Journey: Provides a solid foundation for starting your journey toward becoming a lawyer, with a broader business perspective.

LLB Degree

Direct Path to Legal Career: Often chosen by those who are certain about pursuing a career in law.

Theory and Practical Application: Combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, giving you a comprehensive understanding of the legal field.

Versatile Career Options: While primarily aimed at legal careers, the LLB also equips you for roles in business, management, politics, or consulting, thanks to the robust legal knowledge you gain.

Complementary to Other Interests: If you have strong interests in languages, social sciences, or commercial and economic disciplines, enrolling first in a BA (Law) or BCom (Law) can provide a solid foundation before pursuing the LLB for a more specialized legal career.

The evolution of Somatology, its focus on skin science and career possibilities

Are you considering a career in Beauty Therapy or more; scientific skincare or wellness that enhances both health and appearance?

Perhaps you have you been drawn to the medical field but faced barriers, leading you to seek alternative paths that make a real difference? If you prefer ‘therapy’ over ‘beauty’ in Beauty Therapy, consider becoming an Advanced Aesthetic Therapist.

Aesthetic Medicine is rapidly growing due to high demand for non-surgical facial rejuvenation and new technologies. Skincare therapists perform advanced procedures with significant results, but these come with increased risks and responsibilities, highlighting the importance of quality education from accredited institutions.

This career blends science, therapy, and artistry, allowing you to touch lives and achieve scientifically measured results while collaborating with medical professionals. If this vision excites you, explore the world of Somatology as your starting point.

Somatology is the pathway to becoming an Advanced Aesthetic Therapist, starting with a three-year Diploma at NQF Level 6. This field focuses on the scientific study of the human body, especially the skin. Somatology graduates can study further for an additional year, to specialise as Advanced Aesthetic Therapists, creating tailored treatments and building trust with patients alongside medical professionals.

The partnership between Aesthetic Physicians and Advanced Aesthetic Therapists ensures safe, effective, and scientifically proven treatments by integrating medical and non-surgical techniques. A shining example of this successful collaboration is evident at the Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates Aesthetic Couture practice. The Isa Carstens® Academy held an interview with Aesthetic Physician Dr. Marisa Heyns and Advanced Aesthetic Therapist Kim van Zyl to illuminate the career path in Medical Aesthetics for therapists in practice.

Creating employable therapists

The Isa Carstens® Academy, renowned for excellence in Higher Education, plays a pivotal role in this journey, providing aspiring therapists with the necessary qualifications and skills to excel in the field. The distance learning Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics NQF Level 7 offers specialised training in advanced treatments, an accredited Programme exclusively offered at Isa Carstens® Academy.

STARTING WITH THE RIGHT QUALIFICATION IS CRUCIAL

To become an Advanced Aesthetic Therapist, start with a 3-year Diploma in Somatology at NQF Level 6; the only qualification that grant automatic access to the Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics programme. Higher Education is different to skills-based training, enhancing problem-solving and critical thinking capabilities that are essential for a career in Medical Aesthetics.

While international certification like ITEC and CIDESCO are fantastic additions, they do not meet South Africa’s higher education entry requirements. A list of registered institutions and accredited courses is available from the Department of Higher Education for anyone to do their due diligence.

Theoretical subjects such as Anatomy & Physiology, Biotics, Nutrition, Cosmetic Science, Research Principles & Academic Writing, and Business Practice—including management and planning—ensure that graduates are not only skilled therapists but also well-prepared for the business world.

Application and Admissions

Online applications for 2025 are now open. Provisional acceptance is based on Grade 11 results, for those in matric. To finally register for a Diploma in Somatology, the requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) from the South African Matriculation Board with an endorsement from the board certifying that you are eligible for Diploma study at a tertiary institution. Preference will be given to students who have achieved an Admission Point Score (APS) in excess of 24 excluding Life Orientation.
