AWSUM Durban and Surrounds March/April 2024 edition

Page 1

The vision of South African hockey personality Les Galloway, of SchoolGirlsSport began in 2011, inviting first teams from schools around KwaZulu Natal to participate. The challenge was broken down into ten regions, with each regional champion travelling to the Grand Finals held every July at St Mary’s D.S.G. in Kloof. The regions include Durban and surrounds (4), Pietermaritzburg (2), Umvoti (1), Southern (Ugu) KZN (1), Northern KZN (1) and North Coastal (1) regions.

Over the fourteen years, there have been 125 regionals with 11 Grand Finals (2020 and 2021 were disrupted years because of COVID). It is estimated that over 13 000 schoolgirls’ have interacted with this Challenge over the years. Matches are usually 20 minutes one-way and played in either a Pool or Round Robin format, with umpires drawn from the participating schools. This gives emerging umpires an opportunity to learn from seasoned ones during these fast-action games.

The only team to have featured at every single Grand Final is Durban Girls’ College who has a 100% record winning their regional, the Durban Central Regional.

Midway through the fourteenth year, the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge continues to be a highlight on the schoolgirls’ hockey calendar.

Three teams have their name proudly engraved on the overall trophy, St Anne’s College (Pietermaritzburg North Regional) raised it in the inaugural year, with St Mary’s D.S.G. (Highway Regional) and Durban Girls’ College sharing the spoils celebrating as the overall champion five times each.

Leading up to this year’s Grand Final, there are still five more regionals to be played. The Durban South Regional on Saturday 6 April hosted by New Forest High School. A week later, heading north, Grantleigh College is the venue for the North Coast Regional. The defending champs will host schools from Richards Bay and surrounds on Saturday 13 April. Concluding the April action, St Patrick’s College in Kokstad will be a hive of hockey activity on Saturday 20 April for the Sisonke and Ugu Regional.

The penultimate tournament, the uMvoti and oThukela Regional travels to Greytown High on Saturday 4 May. Wrapping up the ten regionals, the KZN Northern Regional commences at Ferrum Hoërskool in Newcastle on Saturday 11 May.

Five teams have already qualified for the 2024 Grand Finals. The teams are Durban Girls’ College representing the Durban Central Regional, The Wykeham Collegiate who were crowned in the Pietermaritzburg North Regional; St John’s D.S.G. waving the flag from the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional; Our Lady of Fatima from the Durban North Regional and the most recent, St Mary’s DSG for the Highway Regional.

All games will be live streamed on SuperSport Schools. For more info like the tournament’s Facebook page or follow on Instagram.

Fencing

Aaron, a 17-year-old Durban High School Grade 11 student, is representing South Africa at the Junior Africa Fencing Championships in Cairo, Egypt. He’ll be competing in the Cadet (U17) Sabre event. With expectations weighing on the teenager, Aaron said: “I am looking forward to being able to fence against really good quality fencers who have different techniques to our local fencers, and I plan to put my years of training into practice on the piste. I enjoy meeting new people, so I am looking forward to meeting other fencers from across Africa. I would love to come home with a medal, but just the experience of being in an international competition is a huge moment for me.” Aaron’s fencing journey began when he was eight, when he met his coach, Mitchum Blakeman, and his teammates from the Maestro Fencing Club during a fencing exhibition at a shopping centre. Fencing grabbed his attention, he immediately became interested and asked his parents if he could take lessons. He has been fencing since that day.

“The Olympics is the ultimate dream for me. South Africa hasn’t produced many Olympic fencers so I would love to be able to compete on a world stage like that and bring a medal home,” Aaron said. Aaron has learned life lessons such as focusing on his opponent, blocking out distractions, and perseverance. He has also learned to focus on his studies and music practice. His parents, Vanessa and Carl Drimmie, are proud of their son’s achievements. “He has worked for a long time for this honour, and we are so happy that he has made a dream come true by being able to represent his country in a sport that he loves. He has made a lot of people proud with his hard work and determination, and we cannot wait to see what his future holds.”
