Paarl word AWSUM se nuwe
hoofkantoor
The idea to start AWSUM ten years ago, began due to the fact that my children were in primary school and it became apparent to me that mainstream and local media didn’t support schools on a large and ongoing scale. Very little was done to give learners the credit and praise they deserved for their academic and sporting achievements. There was some coverage of school news, but it seemed that the small amount published were simply to appease schools.
I noticed that in each and every school there were massive amounts of news in terms of sporting, academics and cultural activities and achievements. I decided to create a platform for schools to exclusively share news in a newspaper format that could stand alone and only focus on schools-a newspaper that could share positive news. Since most newspapers focus on negative, bad news, scandals, and stories of corruption to sell papers, this endeavour was a high risk one. Bear in mind that we had no prior knowledge of how newspapers operate in terms of news, layout, advertising costs and many other pertinent daily operations. We were not even knowledgeable with regards to the many kinds of paper thicknesses used in publishing a newspaper
We wanted to be different and focus on the parents of school children and it was thus of cardinal importance that the newspapers be distributed by schools, and that learners took these newspapers home and were not merely just another publication on the store shelves.
The following figures tell our story:
• Every year we publish 4 newspapers in 22 regions on a national basis.
• In February of each year, we publish 8 provincial newspapers that focus specifically on matric results.
• We publish 50 special interschool editions every year.
• Our annual career guide is a special edition that works with post-school educational institutions to provide matric graduates with further tertiary study information.
• 2.5 million parents follow our news every year via our online presence at www.awsumnews.co.za.
Ten years has flown by in a heartbeat and there is much that we have learnt throughout this time and of which we are extremely proud. These include areas such as our online school-news platform www.awsumnews.co.za, which was launched 5 years ago to ensure unlimited and daily school news sharing. We currently share the ongoing news and achievements of more than 2 000 schools using this platform.
We would like to thank the schools, their marketing teams as well as the thousands of advertisers that continue to support this initiative on an ongoing basis. Without these individuals and our exceptional dedicated team, the past 10 years would not have been possible.
We have big plans for the future, and are looking forward to continuing to grow and provide quality news through our online and hardcopy publications as we take on the next ten years.

Taking a senior role in the team is a no-brainer, says Proteas’ Kagiso Rabada
Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was awarded Test player of the year at the 2023 Cricket South Africa Awards and following his featuring in the top five Test wicket takers in the world this past season, the award was well deserved. Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada told IOL Sport that it is his ‘will to win’ that continues to make him one of the best fast bowlers in the world.
Rabada has been playing for the Proteas for a good nine years and from the time he made his Proteas debut at the Adelaide Oval, it was clear that Rabada was cut from a different cloth; he was always on a league of his own.No one will forget his match winning performance in Perth in 2016 at the tender age of 21.
Post 2018, international cricket handed Rabada an important lesson that results won’t always go your way. Rabada says their 2019 World Cup campaign, which saw them knocked out before they could finish their round robin fixtures, taught him to rid of self-doubt and accept that on the day there’s a possibility you could end up on the losing side. “Personally, the 2019 World Cup taught me not to doubt and accept that there’s either defeat or success, and it’s about keeping success in your mind at all times.” said Rabada.
His eleven-wicket haul against Australia at St. George’s Park Cricket Stadium in 2018 will forever be remembered, but most importantly it was clear from those early years that Rabada was a different kind of beast.
Source: IOL Sport, written by Ongama Gcwabe
The ups and downs of the past couples of seasons have not taken anything away from what makes Rabada special and he told IOL Sport that he attests all his success to his ‘will to win’.
“For myself I think what makes me so different and successful is my will to win,”said Rabada. “I mean, everyone is different but if you ask me what drives me it’s definitely my will to win.” He added.
“It’s all about welcoming the youngsters into the squad and making them feel a part of the team and making them understand where we want to go so that we are all in the same boat.” He added.
“Identity is important because it becomes what you go back to when things are going slightly off track,” explained Rabada. “It’s something you enhance when things are really going your way. It works as a reference; it acts as a compass as to what you want to achieve as a team.” He added.
There’s no doubt that the Proteas squad has the talent to go all the way in the World Cup this time around, but that journey starts with them coming up with their identity and their style of play and letting the rest take care of itself.
Looking at the squad, Rabada’s nine-year international experience will come in handy. Rabada says it’s a no brainer that he now has to step up and be the senior player in the team. “Because of my experience, how long I’ve been playing and what I’ve done, taking the senior player role is a no brainer for me,” said Rabada.
South Africa legends predict Proteas’ fortunes at World Cup
South African legends Jacques Kallis and Faf du Plessis have shared their thoughts on how the Proteas could fare at the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. South Africa head into the marquee tournament in India with a nice blend of youth and experience to pick from.
As good as the squad will be, the legendary all-rounder Kallis, speaking exclusively to the ICC, said the key for South Africa would be to stay true to their brand of cricket. “The one thing that needs to change for South Africa to be successful in a Cricket World Cup is to carry on playing the cricket that we’ve played going into the World Cup,” he said. “We have a history of playing good cricket leading into the World Cup. For some reason, things change. Maybe we want it too much. “I think players wanted too much and you’ve gone outside of the area you need to be doing. Maybe going outside of their roles because they wanted too much.”
Kallis had a valuable piece of advice to the current crop of players: “Stick to your roles. Trust the partner next to you. And just play the cricket you’ve been playing.” Kallis believes South Africa’s traditional strength – their pace attack – will once again be key for their hopes. “South Africa’s strength to me is going to be in our bowling attack,” he said. “We’ve got some quality pace bowlers that can blow away the opposition’s top-order. And I think they are going to play a major role if South Africa are going to get far, if we do get far (in the tournament).”
Kallis’ optimism was matched by former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis. “South Africa’s white-ball team is in a strong place,” du Plessis told the ICC. “They’ve got some real experience going into that World Cup.” Du Plessis, however, did warn that adapting to the conditions in the sub-continent would be the biggest challenge for Temba Bavuma’s men.
“The challenge for all teams that are not from the subcontinent is obviously always the challenge of going to the subcontinent,” he said. “Especially 50-over cricket. I find with T20 cricket, the surfaces are a bit more even. And you get some really good pitches. With 50-over cricket, you can get that wear and tear and the spinners really come into their own.”
Du Plessis however added that the home team, India, and serial winners Australia would be the teams to beat. “I think South Africa has got a really good side,” he said. “It will be hard to get past a team like India in home conditions. The other team you can never write off is Australia, with them being so successful in ICC events.”

Rugby Honours!
Abongile has been a very consistent performer for the 1stXV throughout the season. He played every minute of the 19 matches played and led from the front as the captain. I think one would also have to look very hard to find him missing a training session or sitting watching the others train; he was always pushing himself and the team to new heights. On match days, he was in charge of the lineouts and as the main lineout jumper, it was an area he excelled in.
He also played an important role in loose play – often being one of the top three players for most tackles made, rucks hit or ball carries. He was the player doing the hard yards rather than the flashy stuff. He was selected for the EP u18 Craven Week team that went unbeaten at the national week and led the 1stXV to wins over the likes of Grey High School, Framesby Hoerskool and Queens College.
Abongile’s playing ability and leadership were both a major part of the 1stXV successful season and therefore Abongile is awarded Honours for rugby.

Term 3 highlights
Term 3 at Queen’s College was filled with memorable moments, and one of the standout highlights was undoubtedly the #QCagainstGBV initiative that took place.
During the weekend of August 18 and 19, Queen’s College Boys’ High School and Dale College came together, raising their voices in unison against the pressing issue of gender-based violence (GBV). This highly anticipated derby was a powerful demonstration of opposition to the ongoing scourge of GBV, featuring various impactful initiatives.
A striking feature of this campaign was the symbolic use of the colour orange, which has become a global symbol in the fight against GBV. The 1ST Teams of Queen’s College proudly wore orange socks, while the participating Cultural Societies donned orange armbands, signifying their strong support for the cause. Beyond the school grounds, learners from Queen’s College Boys’ High School and Primary School, Queenstown Girls’ High School, and Balmoral Girls’ Primary School wore orange ribbons on their uniforms, serving as visible reminders of their collective commitment to combat GBV.
The campaign also included a soirée evening on August 16, where tickets were sold to raise funds for the Thutuzela Rape Crisis Centre at Frontier Hospital. Additionally, collection bins were placed at the derby days, giving individuals the opportunity to donate requested products in support of the cause.
The #QCagainstGBV campaign has not only showcased the unity and determination of the Queen’s College community but has also made a significant impact in the ongoing fight against genderbased violence. It serves as a shining example of how a school can come together to address important societal issues and make a positive change.
