MARITZBURG COLLEGE Tennis

Athletics

Maritzburg College would like to congratulate Adam Tilbury on his selection to the KZN Schools U15 Tennis team.

Along with some great track and field activities, College has seen four exceptional record-breaking athletic achievements at our annual Inter-House Championship.

Selection was based on the results of the KZN Schools tennis trials played as a tournament from 25-27 February 2022. In excess of 160 players from throughout KZN participated in the trials. These teams will represent the province in the TSA Inter Provincial Tournament. We know he will represent Maritzburg College and our province with pride.

Neo Mosebi broke Peter Kyle’s record of 1974 (10.60s) in the 100m, in a time of 10.22 secs

Ilunga Kayembe broke the U17100m record in a time of 10.84 secs. The old record was 10.90 held by Peter Kyle (1974) and Ndlovu (2019)

Ryan Stockhil jumped an outstanding 2.10 m in the open high jump breaking the record of 2.00m set by Brett Balmer in 1985

Luyanda Kunene jumped 1.92m in the U17 high jump also breaking a long-standing record of J Pienaar (1.90m) set in 1997.

Well done boys – we are SO proud of you!

Fisies (skop, slaan of boks);

Verbaal (noem kinders name, dryf die spot met hulle of maak dreigemente);

Emosioneel (sosiale uitsluiting, intimidasie deur gebare of dreigemente);

Rassistiese afknouery;

Veranderinge in slaappatrone 3. Verandering in geaardheid 4. Vriendverskuiwings 5.

Onverklaarbare beserings soos kneusplekke, snye en krapmerke;

Verlies aan eetlus of verandering in eetgewoontes;

Vernielde of verlore skoolboeke, klere, of elektroniese toestelle; of

Gereelde klagtes oor maagpyn, hoofpyn, naarheid of dat hy siek voel.

WESTVILLE SENIOR PRIMARY SCHOOL SAMS National Swimming Championship The 9th – 13th of March saw Westville Primary School’s own Mr Adamson take part in the 37th edition of SAMS National Swimming Championship, held at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town. This is the second time that Mr Adamson has competed at the SAMS National Swimming Championship, his previous time being in Germiston in 2020. Mr Adamson was entered into six individual races and five relay races. The individual races that Mr Adamson took part in were 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke, 200m Individual Medley, and the 50m Breastroke and Butterfly. Mr Adamson gave it everything he had in all his races and ended the Championship with 1 gold medal, 4 silver medals and 6 bronze medals. Mr Adamson’s gold, came from his favourite race, the 200m Backstroke. The next goal for Mr Adamson is to compete at the World Masters Swimming Championship to be held in 2023. Well done, Sir!

Rugby The 17th of February 2022 saw the return of the much anticipated Gelofte Night Series. Westville finished 4th in the 2020 edition and were eager to show a great improvement on that previous result. Westville were placed in pool A with Kloof, Penzance B and the hosts Gelofte. The first match against Kloof showed great excitement from the Westville boys as finally after two years, spectators were able to sit and watch these young men play a game that they love. Westville started the Night Series with a well structured and classy performance against Kloof. Westville ran out 46-0 victors, making it look like they had not missed a rugby game during the pandemic. The following week, Westville came up against Penzance B team. Even with many errors and missed chances, Westville were able to put out a solid performance to win 41-0. The final pool match against Gelofte turned out to be an unofficial playoff match as both teams were unbeaten in the previous games. Westville showed their dominance through good build up play and a structured defence throughout the game. Westville ran out 29-0 victors, setting up a final against Penzance A team. The final against Penzance A team was a much anticipated encounter as both teams had displayed real dominance in all their pool matches. The final was played with a full crowd of supporters, making the encounter all the more exciting. Westville held strong early on in the match as Penzance pushed hard on attack. Once Westville were able to take control of the ball on attack, the boys worked hard to build the phases and march up the field towards the try line. Eventually the pressure mounted and Forwards captain Rorke Stirk managed to get over the line to score the first try. Halftime saw the score at 5-0 to Westville. Shortly into the second half, good build up play managed to let Penzance get over the line to score a converted try and lead the match 5-7. The following moments of the game were played in the Penzance 22m area. Eventually, a quick sniping run by replacement scrumhalf Rhougen Maullin saw Westville get over the line. Jamie Hasselbach converted the kick and Westville led 12-7. A late penalty kick by Jamie Hasselbach saw Westville lead 15-7 before the final whistle was blown, Westville being crowned 2022 Night Series champions. Well done to the Westville 1st XV Rugby squad and coaches on this achievement.

Debate

Well done to our very own Keira Hall who saved a man’s life while on duty on Sunday at Warner Beach! While on patrol Keira was alerted by screaming family members of an adult male being swept out behind the rocks by a riptide. Keira swam out and returned the exhausted adult back to shore. Her team then helped carry the gentleman onto the beach where they treated the patient’s injuries he sustained from the rocks. The gentleman was then happily reunited with his family. A job well done, Keira!!!

In the holidays Kamalika Moodley represented the KwaZulu Natal Junior Debating team at the South African National Schools Debating Championship which was held from the 15th – 19th December 2021.
