FAIRMONT HIGH SCHOOL Top Performers We’d like to congratulate not just our top performers, some of whom are pictured here, but all of our learners for their sterling efforts during the first part of the year. It certainly hasn’t been easy. With 22 of our grade 12 learners having a term one aggregate above 90%, we’re particularly proud of Caitlin Hough, our top matric learner who has an aggregate of 97.9%. Caitlin, along with Camilla Veitch in grade 10, also got 100% for her term one English results! And Tristan Wessels in grade 12 also got 100% for his term one Business Studies aggregate.

RCL Provincial Forum Our RCL have worked hard to ensure that all learners feel respected and valued, something which was clearly seen when the RCL invited learners and staff to meet in solidarity with the LGBTIQA+ community. The Pride flag was raised and both Mr Erasmus, our headmaster, and Lao Molele, the chairperson of our RCL, spoke to the gathered crowd and were interviewed by SABC News about their efforts to ensure the wellbeing of all of our learners. We are particularly proud of Lao who was recently inaugurated as the RCL Provincial Forum Chairperson - a great honour indeed, and one which she is incredibly well equipped for.

LAERSKOOL WELGEMOED CTPSN-proewe Laerskool Welgemoed het op Maandag, 17 Mei, die F1-netbalproewe aangebied. Slegs 14 dogters is per ouderdomsgroep gekies om aan die volgende rondte Distriksproewe deel te neem. Hierdie proewe is ongelukkig voorlopig uitgestel, maar Blessieland is nogsteeds baie trots op die volgende vier netbalspelers:

Blessies gee om vir die omgewing Te midde ‘n baie deurmekaar jaar in 2020, het Laerskool Welgemoed gewys hulle gee om vir die omgewing. Die skool het derde plek behaal in die Mpact herwinningskompetisie vir skole in 2020. Ronnie, Mpact se gelukbringer, was so gaaf om die skool se prys te kom oorhandig. Blessie-Artists for the win! The Grade 1 and 2 learners from Welgemoed Primary participated in the annual worldwide art contest. The winners will be part of the 2022 Colgate “My Bright Smile Global Calendar” featuring original artwork by children from around the world. We are very proud to announce that one of our Grade 1 learners, Maddison van Heerden’s art work was selected in the top 13 pictures in South Africa. The South African winner will be chosen from these 13 pictures. Congratulations, Maddison!

VRL Leiers Laerskool Brackenfell se VRL skoolleiers vir die tweede kwartaal is:
Laerskool Brackenfell het die sportjaar op ‘n hoë noot afgeskop met vyf Brackies wat die W.P. Laerskole Tennisspan gehaal het vir die jaarlikse interprovinsiale wedstryde teen Boland wat in Hermanus, Moorreesburg en Parow gespeel is. Almal het deeglik rekenskap van hulself gegee en die skool se vaandel hoog gehou het. Tennis was die eerste sport wat tydens die Covid grendeltyd teruggekeer het.

Redenaar blink uit Laerskool Brackenfell se bobaas redenaar, Luané Conradie het die nuwe redenaarseisoen op ‘n hoë noot afgeskop met ‘n blink vertoning in die Radikale Redenaarskompetisie en deurgedring na die eindronde van die Wes-Kaapse streek. Die begaafde Graad 5 sprekertjie het ook geskitter in die onlangse Oppie Tong Af-redenaarskompetisie wat in Mei gehou en waar sy met ‘n A++ toekenning bekroon is. Volgens haar afrigter en Brackies se redenaar koördineerder, Sias Janse van Vuuren, is die jong dametjie ‘n gebore spreker en is die Laerskool Brackenfell geweldig trots op haar sukses. Luané het reeds verlede jaar die oog gevang toe sy as ‘n groentjie die nasionale eindronde van die Interskole Redenaarsliga van Suid-Afrika gehaal het. Dit is ongelukkig deur Covid ontwrig, maar het haar aangespoor om vanjaar weer alles in die stryd te werp.

McKenzie Pedro het onlangs aan die African Continental Road Championships in Egipte (fietsry) deelgeneem. Daar het sy 2 goue - en 1 bronsmedalje verower en ook ‘n vierde plek in Junior Women Kierin behaal. Ons het nou verneem dat McKenzie ‘n 8ste plek op die World Junior Woman Sprint ranking behaal het. Hierdie prestasie behaal sy in haar eerste jaar as junior deelnemer.
14 en 15 Mei het die uitdunronde van die ATKV-debatskompetisie plaasgevind en DF se sprekers het weer hul staal gewys. Arnold Hattingh en Gabi dos Santos is verkies as een van slegs ses seniorspanne in die WesKaap om aan die landswye finaal deel te neem. Hierdie kompetisie sal 14 Augustus by ATKV Buffelspoort plaasvind.

Announcing the 20 schools who have been selected to make their movies for Filmit 33 Schools from South Africa and 2 from Namibia entered 2-minute film pitches for the Filmit competition during the month of June. Our first-round panel of judges consisting of Bradley Joshua from Gambit Films, Moenier Hendricks from Homebrew Films, and Marcel Spaumer and Richard September from Suidooster went through all 70 film concepts pitched by these school groups, and selected twenty they believe have entertainment value, is doable, evoked interest and should make for a good short film. All judges compiled a short video in which they share their professional opinion, observation, and subsequent recommendations on what the 20 approved film groups should focus on when heading into the mentorship programme in preparation for the making of their films. These videos are shared on the Paul Roos Gymnasium YouTube channel.
One-on-one mentorship by industry specialists kick off on the 27th of July. This mentorship will continue over a two-week period up until the 6th of August. It will take place online (via Zoom sessions) and will be presented by five actors from the TV series Suidooster. Each actor will be allocated to four of the participating schools. These actors will guide the learners in the early phases of development of their films. They are Marco Spaumer, Dean Smith, Esther von Waltsleben, Jawaahier Petersen and Eden Classens. The 20 schools who submitted the best film concepts in 2021 and who move on to the next round of the Filmit competition are: • • • • • • • •
Marcel Spaumer The Filmit team wants to inspire all schools who entered (also those who did not qualify to move on to the next round) to up their game and learn how to improve their ideas and concepts, if not for the 2021 competition – then definitely for the 2022 competition. A pre-recorded mentorship video (including advice from industry professionals) on pre-production, production and post-production of films will be shared via the Paul Roos Gymnasium YouTube channel. This video is made available free of charge for all 35 schools who entered the competition. Contributors to this video are Johannes Pieter Nel (director of photography), Louis Pretorius (screenwriter), Zandré Coetzer (Nagvlug Films), Lloyd O’Conner (sound engineer), Fahema Hendricks (director of photography), Braam du Toit (composer), Eva du Preez (editor), Neil Sandilands (acting for the camera) and Michael Botha (postproduction on sound). The mentorship programme was made possible by Atterbury and WeBuyCars. It will be uploaded and available for private streaming on the PRG YouTube channel on the 26th of July 2021.

Egalite Individual Golf Tournament – Sun City On 20 June, 10 boys from Curro Durbanville travelled to Sun City to participate in an individual golf tournament at Sun City. The boys completed a practice round on the majestic Lost City course, proving to be challenging yet enjoyable. The tournament commenced on 22 June with 45 players in total. The tournament consisted of 3 rounds of golf, 1 on Lost City and 2 on the prestigious Gary Player golf course. Joshua Lombard was the top player in the B division, beating his closest rival by 15 strokes. Brad Lee Watson came 4th in this division as well. Travis Procter played consistent golf earning him an 8th place overall. This event proved to be challenging but the boys had great fun, built friendships and brought home new skills, to use on our home courses. A big thank you to our sponsors and Curro Durbanville for allowing this individual tournament to become a reality during these trying times.

Western Province Netball We are very proud of Stellenberg Netbal today. 23 Stellies girls were selected for Western Province netball and will participate in the Western Cape trials in Riversdal on 4 and 5 June. 5 van die spelers werf vir die 1ste keer hul WP kleure. Hulle verteenwoordig dan die trotse tuiste van DurbieTrots by die ATKV Nasionale Debat Landsfinaal rondom 21 Augustus te Buffelspoort – hierdie datum is tans uitgestel tot verdere kennisgewing. Die span van Klara Brand, Kaydee Barnard en Islah Vorster verower ‘n welverdiende 10de plek uit die 33 Wes-Kaap Junior

Junior en Senior Debateerders praat wêreld aan die brand 4 Junior Debatspanne en 1 Senior Debatspan neem deel aan die splinternuwe Con Spirito Debatskompetisie. 2 Juniorspanne kwalifiseer vir die landsfinaal wat tans vir Augustus beplan is in Johannesburg. Hierdie datum is egter nog onderhewig aan verandering. Durbanville skryf ook in vir die Paul Roos Gimnasium Debatsliga wat ook ‘n eerste vir die Durbie bekkiges is. Albei leerders gaan hulle by die Cheetahs aansluit vir die 2022 rugbyseisoen en ons sien uit om hierdie manne se vordering dop te hou. Roger Petersen is vanjaar opgeneem in die SARU o18 Elite Rugbygroep en gaan volgende vir die Maties uitdraf in die Varsity Cup Young Guns. Netbal Nadat die prestige Waterkloof Netbaltoernooi op die nippertjie afgestel was het ons Durbies na Gauteng gereis om aan ‘n Netbaltoernooi by Helpmekaar Kollege deel te neem. Ons Durbies het puik presteer en ons o14A en o16A Netbalspanne was albei onoorwonne op hierdie toernooi. Albei hierdie spanne spog ook met wenne oor Oranje Meisies en Helpmekaar Kollege. Baie geluk aan al ons Durbies wat deelgeneem het.

What makes it special to play for De Kuilen High School’s first team? Wearing the 1st XV jersey and especially being the first players to wear the new kits we got this year makes it special. To add to it being able to represent De Kuilen High School, playing with my brothers and setting an example for the young players who one day want to wear that 1st XV jersey. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? I can say our attacking game is our strong point, using our strong attackers at certain areas of the field, but overall, the whole squad has been performing extremely well. What motivates you to give your best on the field week after week? What always motivates me is obviously being the captain of the first team, it pushes me to lead the team to victory every week. Another is getting an opportunity to play again after the long lockdown we had. Every game counts, so I give my all on that field. Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? The bond we have makes us special because we have been playing for 5 years, well 4, but we know each other’s playing style which makes our chemistry in the team immaculate. What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? I feel like our greatest achievement was our U/14 season, when we were undefeated, but hopefully this year we can have an undefeated season once the season starts again. Who is the joker of the team and why? I can say the joker in the team is our left winger, Jesse Reynolds. He is always making jokes and always asks the dumbest questions one could ask. What is the most enjoyable time after a match? The most enjoyable time after a match is when we celebrate our victory in the locker room, because the energy in the locker room is sky high! Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? I never really had a matric hero when I was in Gr8, but I always looked up to my cousin, Mikyle Daries who played first team for De Kuilen High School back in 2014. He always taught me a lot of things about the game and inspired me to work hard to get where I am today. What makes it special to play for De Kuilen High School first team? When you play in the first team for the school, you are seen as role models to younger boys that just started out with hockey,. You motivate the younger boys to carry the schools name with the same amount of pride as the way the first team does and inspire them to be where you are one day, in a first team kit with a number and with our badge on their chest. In the past (post covid) first team games would be the main event game, where the whole school comes to watch the games and you hear people that you don’t know cheer you on as you pass the ball to someone or make a great tackle. Having people compliment you after the game and the respect that is also earned after the week is what makes it special to play for my school, What are the strengths of your team this year? The boys brings their 110% in effort to practice, wanting to do better so that we do not leave any regrets for the next day but where the team’s strength really lies, is sacrificing everything to be on the field and their mentality. The team sacrifices a lot to be at games and practices, from sacrificing their extra classes or rescheduling them to sacrificing their Saturday mornings where they could have slept in. In terms of the team’s mentality, the boys have a ‘’Never Give Up’’ and a “Anything is possible” mentality. Whenever we are losing, we try our best no matter how bad the score is and we make sure that we go out and try our best and never give up. Thirdly, I must say that every department has their own strengths in terms of positions on the field, we have no weaknesses but definitely room for improvement. We have phenomenal players that are always bringing their “A” game to practice and always trying, even when there’s a dark cloud over their heads, they try their best. What motivates you to give yourbest on the field? What motivates me is the fact that I’m getting up every morning to hear the sound of a hockey ball as I hit it forward and to represent my school as a hockey player at other schools. The team motivates me as well. We hype each other up during the week and at practices because we are excited to try the new tactics and formations that we have been training for at practices. I always set myself a goal every Saturday and try to achieve it as I play. I listen to my ”mentalität” playlist and watch men’s hockey pro league highlights before a game which gets me into the mood to try my best as soon as I step on the astro/field. But the main 2 things that really drive me to do my best are knowing that my spot on the team isn’t promised, so if I mess up I could get dropped because there are other good players in the B team, and when I put on my first team jersey it immediately instills pride into me. The first team jersey has the school’s badge on it and I play for the badge that’s next to my heart.
