Transitioning to uni & college: gearing up for your new life chapter As the year draws to an end and Matriculants prepare to move from their school career to higher education, parents and students alike need to start preparing for the emotional whirlwind that accompanies this transition, an education expert says. “The leap from high school to university and college life is often portrayed as an exhilarating jump into adulthood. Movies, TV shows, and even best-selling novels romanticise the college experience, painting a world of limitless freedom, midnight study sessions, impromptu road trips, new friendships, and transformative learning,” says Dr Linda Meyer, MD of The Independent Institute of Education’s Rosebank College. “Yet amid the thrill of embarking on a new academic journey and the promise of fresh starts, it’s essential to acknowledge that this will be one of the biggest life changes young people will have experienced. Being aware of the challenges and what to expect – and prepare accordingly – will make a huge difference to the likely success of this transition,” she says. The emotional rollercoaster Dr Meyer says stepping onto a university or college campus for the first time can feel like entering an entire new universe.“The move isn’t just about packing bags, selecting courses, and choosing the right dorm decor. More profoundly, it signifies a shift in one’s identity. No longer is one a school student, protected and cocooned within the familiar confines of hometown life. Instead, you morph into a university student, standing on the precipice of adulthood: independent and responsible for your own choices, actions, and consequences.” This transition, while liberating, brings with it a complex mix of excitement, anxiety, hope, trepidation, and, sometimes, a touch of homesickness. Why is this transition so intense? The transition and its related challenges can be overwhelming for three reasons: independence overload, academic pressure, and social dynamics, notes Dr Meyer. New students will likely experience independence overload, as university marks the first taste of complete independence. Suddenly, tasks that were perhaps taken for granted at home, like managing finances, cooking wholesome meals, or even mastering the art of laundry, can become monumental challenges which quickly compound. It’s a crash course in adulting, and the learning curve can sometimes be steep. While trying to manage this new injection of independence, increased academic pressure will also enter the chat. “The shift from a high school curriculum, where learning is often structured and spoon-fed, to rigorous university-level courses can be daunting. Here, the expectation is to be proactive, self-driven, and selfreliant. The pressure to excel, maintain scholarships, or even just keep up can weigh heavily on young shoulders. As if that were not enough, students must navigate the new social dynamics at their higher education institution. “Universities and Colleges are not just academic institutions. Campuses are social hives. They bring together a melting pot of cultures, backgrounds, ideologies and personalities of people trying to find their tribe while also trying to do their best academically. This diversity is the university’s strength, but it also means that navigating new social circles, understanding different perspectives, and building genuine, lasting relationships can be exciting and challenging.”
Gearing up emotionally Taking into consideration all these new challenges, Dr Meyer advises the following steps to prepare for the new life as a young adult in higher education: Open Conversations: Before making the move, talk to someone who’s been there – it could be a sibling who’s a year or two ahead, a friend who’s already on campus, or a mentor from school. Their experiences, anecdotes, and advice can provide invaluable insights and dispel some myths while also helping you build a mental roadmap of what to expect when you arrive on campus. Set Realistic Expectations: Popular culture has, in many ways, romanticised university life. While there will be moments that feel like they’re straight out of a movie scene, there will also be mundane days, challenging weeks, and tough semesters. Understand and accept that everyone has their unique journey, complete with their own set of highs and lows. Seek Support: It’s okay to ask for help. Universities are aware of their students’ emotional challenges and typically offer counselling services, student support groups, and peer mentorship programs. Utilising these resources can make a world of difference. No matter what your situation, they have seen it all, so don’t be intimated to seek assistance. Embrace the Change: Change is the only constant in life. Instead of resisting the unfamiliar or longing for the comfort of the known, embrace the change. Every challenge faced, and every mistake made is an opportunity for growth and learning. Self-Care: Mental wellbeing should never take a backseat. Self-care should be non-negotiable, whether practising meditation, indulging in a hobby, journaling reflections, or simply taking a weekend off to recharge. “Despite the challenges and occasional bouts of self-doubt, the university or college experience is undeniably transformative. It’s a time of self-discovery, pushing boundaries, forging lifelong friendships, and acquiring knowledge that shapes our worldview. By being emotionally prepared and adopting a proactive approach to mental well-being, students can navigate this phase with resilience and grace, ensuring that the memories made during these years are cherished for a lifetime,” says Dr Meyer.

KRY KOERANT AANLYN
LAERSKOOL GENE LOUW Gene Louw slaan ’n ses vir dogterskrieket
Gene Louw-atlete blink uit by BD’s Top 10
Agter: Liné de Villiers, Viljoen Botha, Joey Calitz (seuns o/13 – goud: diskus; silwer: gewigstoot; brons: spiesgooi), Travis Eberhardt (seuns o/12 – brons: gewigstoot), Imke Roux (meisies o/12 – goud: 75m hekkies; goud: 100m; silwer: 150m), Marinda Strydom (atletiekorganiseerder).
Excellence in English Grade 4 learner Liam Friday achieved second place in the national South African Council for English Education (SACEE) Language Challenge for 2023 with a superb score of 95%.
Voor: Surita Roberts (afrigter), Nadia de Beer, Zaira Beän, Tihané Klynveld, Annebelle Groenewald, Lize Scott. Middel: Tegan Garton, Daneecke McMullin, Anke Rautenbach, Caitlin Enslin (ondersteuner).

LoveLocal - Brackenfell & Durbanville In a world where people are bombarded with so much noise — marketing emails, ads, SMS, and an endless stream of content—we bring local service providers to residents to consider local purchasing before looking elsewhere. How? By expanding your brand reach within your local community with a three-pronged advertising and marketing solution that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. This strategy includes: QR-Code, short-form videos, and high-quality print exposure. We’re called local for a reason
Short-form video content
High-quality print exposure
People are no longer looking for high-quality, studioproduced ads, but rather relatable and authentic content. We create short, hard-hitting, low-cost, but high-quality video bites that generate better engagement between local businesses and local people. We then share them on our LoveLocal social media platforms, making the experience local people get from our advertisers, engaging and authentic, with content that resonates with them.
We have identified a significant gap in the advertising landscape: there is a lack of high-quality advertising mechanisms that encourage local residents to prioritize local businesses before considering purchases elsewhere. Unfortunately, the options available are not affordable for SMEs seeking to target local residents effectively.
Through the simple task of scanning a business’s own unique QR-Code, either on the hardcopy LoveLocal edition, or following the hyperlinks on the digital edition, customers will be able to access information, locations and products available at businesses in their immediate area that are dynamic and can be edited and updated by the business owner whenever they choose. You get to control what the link to the QR-code takes the customer to. Use them to: • Share directions to your business • Create a virtual business card that will add your details to their phone when they scan the QR Code • Grow your social media following • Share more information about a campaign or launch online by directing people to a specific landing page • Generate an email to your business by automatically including the receiving email address • Generate a click-to-call by adding your business’s phone number automatically, and so much more.
The idea was born out of inspiration, combined with creativity to bring the first of its kind to you and local business owners—to link print media with online media in changing times, using the latest digital concept of dynamic QR codes. IT’S THE OCT/NOV ISSUE!
BRACKENFELL
We take our readers online through the generation of client-specific QR-codes that appear on every ad. QRCodes are the way of the future and have seen more than 750% growth in use since the pandemic.

Let’s target LOCAL!
PROMOTIONAL
Simplify your marketing strategy in 2024 The popular LoveLocal brand is set to revolutionise the way local South African small, medium and large businesses establish and expand their brand reach within their local communities with the launch of a dynamic new three-pronged QR-Code, short-form video and social media-based advertising mechanism that is available in hardcopy as well as online. This will effectively connect local potential customers within the digital environment directly to information, special offers and deals at traditional brick and mortar locally based stores and services, says Durandt van Zyl, CEO of publishing house TieMedia, owner of the LoveLocal brand. According to van Zyl, the use of QR-codes visible on each business’s advertising will effectively level the playing field for local business owners, and particularly SMEs, who do not have access to, or cannot afford, to spend big budgets on studio advertising and the consequential marketing. Through the simple task of scanning a business’s own unique QR-Code, either on the hardcopy LoveLocal publication or by following the hyperlinks on the digital editions, customers will be able to access information, locations and products available at businesses in their immediate area that are dynamic and can be edited and updated by the business owner whenever they choose. Key to the strategy is the creation and development of short, hard-hitting, and low-cost, but high-quality video bites shared on the LoveLocal social media platforms, aimed at engaging the local consumer to consider local purchasing before looking elsewhere. In addition, the consumer can now also follow their local town’s dedicated LoveLocal social media page to not only keep up to date with happenings and events in their local communities, but the LoveLocal social pages serve as a trusted guide of how to support local businesses and to find services providers in their area. “Local and international statistics have shown that, since the Covid-19 pandemic, consumers have become ever increasingly supportive of local brands and businesses within their immediate communities,” said van Zyl. With over 15 years of marketing industry experience, the LoveLocal team has identified a significant gap in the market for advertising that is effective, affordable, and dynamic due to local market trends. Among these trends, the following stood out: •
• •
Local newspapers are available, but they are printed on low-quality 48gsm paper. These newspapers need to be purchased, and the advertising rates are too high for local smaller businesses to afford. Consequently, this platform doesn’t effectively encourage local purchasing. Local SMEs attempt to utilise social media to connect with local clients, but they struggle to achieve a satisfactory return on investment as exposure to local consumers is limited. There exists a disconnection between print and online advertising, as many local SMEs are not aware of the advantages of incorporating a QR code into their printed advertisements.
Follow LoveLocal Brackenfell on Facebook:
The new QR-code, bite-size video and linked social media-based advertising has a number of benefits for both consumers and businesses alike, says van Zyl. These include: For consumers: • Easy access to the latest local information and deals through the ever-increasing popularity of QR-codes • A reliable, trustworthy source of local purchasing information • Engaging advertising that provides them with a sense of belonging • Buying local is good for the environment • Local business support creates local job opportunities • Increased number of local businesses enables increased investment in their town • These lead to community growth and infrastructure development • You can follow local developments and business and community news on your town specific social media page For businesses: • Unique QR-Code creates effortless online link with consumers with QR-code use having increased by more than 750% since the pandemic • Dual advertising ensures printed and digital, as well as social media presence and promotion at the same time • Development of short-form, consumer appealing videos in conjunction with the highly experienced LoveLocal team that are shared on LoveLocal social pages • Highly cost-effective option for small to large businesses to advertise • Reach broad client base in your immediate community • Encourage local business investment and community development, creating circular economies • Increased accessibility to your local stores means more feet through your doors • Ability to share a large amount of data and multimedia with customers, not limited to text by adding QR-Codes “LoveLocal is a local media partner for local businesses, connecting them with local people. It’s who we bring together that sets us apart. We say, “Tell your local story, celebrate how local you are, sing it from the rooftops, and soon your customers will LoveLocal as much as we do,” adds van Zyl. In a world where people are bombarded with so much noise— marketing emails, ads, SMS, and an endless stream of content—LoveLocal brings local service providers to local residents in an easily digestible format, capturing their attention amidst the extensive amount of content. “The LoveLocal brand has seen exponential growth over the recent past, with new areas coming on board all the time, thereby clearly indicating the benefits of local business as well as an enthusiasm to grow local and national business brands across the country”, says van Zyl. “By getting on-board with us to support this emerging initiative, you can effectively advertise in several formats simultaneously and leverage from the respected and valued LoveLocal brand”, he says, “which ultimately will mean positive economic growth, increased local and international investment, and a brighter future for every South African.”

Baie geluk, Keolynn! - “A good character is real beauty that never fades.”
