EUNICE HOUSES ORGANISE FUN-DAY
By: Caileigh-Rose Forsyth On 8 September 2015, Eunice High School held their Fun-Day. It was a smashing day with all the classes and teachers dressed-up and ready to dance to ultimate classics. The themes were: Grade 11’s - Michael Jackson; grade 10’s -Abba; grade 9’s - Queen; and the grade 8’s -Katy Perry. It was great fun and showed Eunice’s brilliant teamwork. As always, the girls in green did not disappoint with co-ordinated dances and big smiles. Any Bollywood movie producer or director of
“Glee” would be mighty impressed! The day was then given away to hockey, netball, squash, tennis, debating, public speaking, chess, and even a game of softball against the teachers. We ended the day with some great entertainment from Naudé Swart. We also thank Vodacom, Coca-Cola and Loch Logan Waterfront for their awesome support and sponsorship. What a great day of fun in the sun. Eunice, you make me feel good!
EUNICE’S GRAND SLAM TENNIS STAR
By: Sarah De’Ath Jon-Bene Potgieter , Eunice High School’s top tennis player is on the rise to victory, helping to rank Eunice second at the Marli Moolman Tennis Tournament in Cradock this August. Many hours spent on Eunice’s world class courts have helped her as well as her fellow peers to improve their game. Continuous support from family and coaches have been the back-bone to attaining her goals . Jon-Bene has high hopes of one day being able to play at Wimbledon and to compete in Grand Slam tournaments. Driven by her love of the game and by the support she receives on and off the court, she takes on the challenge of being ranked first, head-on. JonBene continues to work hard, and gives her best, trying to improve different aspects of her
game every day. Along with the challenges it will bring, she is looking forward to next term.

HEALTH
OCTOBER IS NATIONAL FAMILY HEALTH MONTH!
WITH SUMMER IN FULL SWING THERE IS NO BETTER TIME TO EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN...
Our health is important to us so we need to better take care of ourselves and our family.
The best way to maintain healthy looking, glowing skin is to use a body scrub. We have created a list of ten body scrubs you can make at home. Not only do you get the benefit of saving money, but they are all natural which means NO chemicals. Don’t forget to apply moisturiser or body butter after using any kind of scrub. BANANA SUGAR BODY SCRUB
When the bananas are starting to brown, grab those beauties and put them to use. This one skips the oil and relies purely on the benefit of banana and the gently abrasive sugar. • 1 ripe banana • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract or your favorite essential oil (optional)
VANILLA COCONUT BROWN SUGAR SCRUB
Coconut oil is subtly fragrant and slightly miraculous. This one is a super moisturizer, and can practically double as dessert. • 1/2 cup coconut oil • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Mix ingredients together. Rub on skin while in the shower, massage, and rinse.
Smash ingredients together with a fork into a chunky goop. Don’t over-mash or it will become too thin. If you want a banana scrub for your face, reserve some of the banana and mash it separately without sugar. In the shower, pat the sugar mixture and gently massage over your body. For your face, gently massage plain banana there, avoiding the eye area. Rinse off with warm water.
Use your homemade sugar scrub to slough away dead skin and moisturize. Just scoop out a generous amount in the shower, and massage into your skin where you need it: knees, elbows, bottoms of feet, etc.
We can start with eating healthier and having healthy eating options for our family. This can be done by eating five fruits and vegetables each day whether that be fresh, frozen or canned. Instead of having sugary drinks, sodas, and sugary juices switch to low fat diary products and opt out to have healthy snacks instead of junk food. It’s also important to give the proper portions of food to to our children and ourselves. Cut down on the fats, get lean meats and poultry, and eat together as a family. We need to start early with our children, we can do this by involving them in the process, being a good role model for them, and having the right foods and snacks available for them. The best way to do portions for children and us is to use a divided plate. The plate should be divided into four parts the first top half should be protein and then whole grain pastas, then the rest should be for fruit and veggies. We can keep our families healthy with exercise, preventive care, being attuned to our bodies, avoid smoking and smoking around children. Adults from the age of 18-64 need
to exercise 2 and half hours a week with aerobic exercises and 10 minutes at time as a minimum, but it’s best to do 5 hours a week of moderate aerobic exercise. For children 6-17 years of age they need up to 60 minutes a day of physical activity. Children should try to incorporate exercise that help strengthen bones and muscles. Children 2 to 5 years of age don’t really have a recommended amount of time but, it’s safe to say that they should play actively as well. 9 ways you can exercise as a family: 1. Go for a pre or post dinner walks 2. Make a game out of chores 3. Turn commercial breaking into fitness breaks 4. Dance to music 5. Walk the dog together 6. Have the kids work in the yard with you 7. Garden together 8. Have a weekly sports night 9. Do a charity run or walk Start today and get your families health on track this month!

marinade for 15 minutes, turning once. Remove the tuna from the marinade and set aside. Oil a grill pan lightly and sear the tuna on both sides – don’t take it beyond medium, it is better served rare. Heat the leftover marinade in a small saucepan and drizzle over tuna. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with sticky rice and stir-fried vegetables.

OCTOBER IN THE GARDEN
Gardening is all about dreaming and seeing pictures in your mind, and then having the patience and energy to turn it into reality. If you dreamt, saw, and did it, the reality will be right in front of your eyes in a glorious October garden. 7 HOT GARDEN TIPS:
1. Do not mow your lawn for a week prior and a week after spraying it with herbicides. This might irritate you, but it will give the herbicide the best chance to deal with the abundance of pesky weeds which sprouted during winter. 2. Start mulching your garden, leaving no bare earth
uncovered – this will help the garden cope with high temperatures and hot summer winds to come. Watch out for red spider mite on roses, fuchsias and Azaleas. 3. Now that waterblommetjies are starting to go dormant in ponds, try something grassy around the edge and in the water. Go for tufty Juncus effusus, a perennial grass- or reed-like plant which loves growing in streambeds and marshes. 4. For colour all summer, plant pelargoniums! These beauties like plenty of light, well drained soil, water when the soil feels dry and good air circulation. Feed them every two weeks with a water soluble fertiliser – they are very tough, but very hungry plants!
6. Cucumbers are quick growers and ready for harvesting in only 2 months. They can be planted in the garden or in pots as they grow upwards and do not take up much space. Ensure that soil is well composted and kept moist. 7. Fine Mediterranean herbs to grow are Rosmarinus ‘Tuscan Blue’ with its lovely sky blue flowers and long stems (which can be used as fragrant skewers for sosaties), Santolina chamaecyparissus (cotton lavender) with aromatic, lemony smelling, grey foliage and mustard yellow pompom flowers.
5. Spray your apple and pear trees towards the end of the month for coddling moth. Keep on watering citrus trees regularly and deeply.
Baie geluk Albert!
