FELCO-SNOEIKOMPETISIE Vyf seuns het die Felco-snoeikompetisie te Elsenburg bygewoon. The Selfie Culture: Should We Be Worried?

You can hardly go onto Facebook, Instagram or any other social media site without being inundated with selfies. A recent study found that a 91% of teens have reportedly posted a photo of themselves online. With this kind of statistic, odds are that your teen has already taken and posted at least one of these instant self-portraits. For most teens, selfies are a harmless bit of adolescent fun, no more dangerous than other passing fads. Actual damage by selfie is rare, but it does happen. As a parent, you need to be aware of these risks and become equipped to discuss them with your teen. SELFIES AND SELF-ESTEEM One risk factor for selfies is that the act and obsession with taking them can lead teens to the development of poor self-esteem. There has been some speculation about whether selfportraits help or hurt self-esteem. Out of the few studies that have been conducted on the matter, the verdict on the effects of selfies on teen self-esteem is somewhat conflicting. A body image survey conducted by the TODAY Show found that 65% of teen girls feel that selfies boost their self-confidence. 40% of them agreed that social media helps them put their best face forward. However, 53% of respondents alleged that photos of themselves that are posted by others can make them feel bad. Earlier this year a teen from the UK became obsessed with taking the perfect selfie. He dropped out of school, lost thirty pounds, and didn’t leave the house for six months because he was devoting ten or more hours a day to taking pictures. Eventually, he attempted suicide by overdose. The chances are pretty good that your teen is not as ill as this young man was, but, while rare, the case demonstrates how poor self-esteem can be exacerbated by the selfie trend. The danger is very real and is something that should be on every parent’s radar.
SELFIES AND YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION As with all online and social media activities, posting selfies can have a negative effect on your child’s online reputation. Both the quantity and subject matter of photos that are shared with friends on Facebook can impact the level of support and intimacy within their relationships. Additionally, the permanence of anything that is posted online, like selfies, can haunt a teen years after they’re taken. Although there are a few ways kids can make the social networks they use more protected, there is never a guarantee that something won’t go viral once it is posted or merely sent to one person. College admissions officers and scholarship foundations now often include a search on social media for prospective students. Many employers have started looking up a job applicant’s online presence and factoring that information into their hiring decisions. That car-surfing stunt a teen photographed in his first year of college may be years in the past. But to an employer, what does that say about the job applicant’s judgment and self-control? He doesn’t know how long ago that picture was taken or how much your teen has changed in the intervening time; he only knows what the photo tells him.

BACON AND BANANA STUFFED CHICKEN BREASTS

Serves 4
Chicken breasts complemented by firm ripe bananas, salty streaky bacon and sticky Wellingtons Sweet Chilli Sauce. INGREDIENTS: • 4 chicken breast fillets, skinned and deboned • 2 tbls Wellingtons’ fruity Sweet chilli • 4 firm ripe bananas, peeled • 16 rashers of streaky bacon – 4 per breast METHOD: Preheat oven 180°C. Place the chicken breasts on a chopping board and using a sharp knife, cut a slit horizontally into the side of each breast to make a deep pocket –don’t cut all the way
through! Cover the inside of each breast with Wellington’s Fruity Sweet Chilli Sauce. Cut the bananas to size and insert into breast pockets. For each breast, lay 3 rashers of bacon out onto a flat surface. Lay the breast on top of the bacon and wrap bacon around the breast. Secure with toothpicks. Place on an oven tray and bake for 15–20 minutes until done. Remove from oven and rest the breasts for 10 minutes. Serve with steamed green beans and new potatoes and an extra drizzle of Fruity Sweet Chilli Sauce.

The Senior A & B Debaters, as well as the Junior B Team of La Rochelle Girls’ High School, competed on the final day of the Western Cape Provincial Tournament. The Junior B Team made it all the way to the Finals, where they lost to Bishops. In the Semifinals of the Boland League,
Kaela, Cassidy and Yanganani progressed to the final, where they beat Paarl Boys’ High to win the Boland Junior League. Both Senior Teams won their semi-finals, resulting in an allLa Rochelle final. In a closely contested split-panel decision, La Rochelle B won the Boland Senior League.

I have found this great garden idea online that I want to share with you. What a better way to welcome all of our feathered friends back than with this adorable tea cup bird feeder? WHAT YOU NEED: • A tea cup and saucer. • Wild bird seed. • Super adhesive glue. • String. WHAT TO DO: • Make sure your cup and saucer are clean and dry. • Squeeze some of the glue onto the edge of your saucer. • Tip your tea cup onto its side and place on-top of the glue. • You will need to let it set for about 24 hours before you hang it outside. • Next all you have to do is pour in your birdseed and hang it up.

GRAAD 11 GESKIEDENIS Op 25 Augustus is die Graad 11 Geskiedenisleerders op ’n besoek aan die Holocaustmuseum in Kaapstad. Dit was besonder leersaam vir almal en dié besoek is nou ‘n jaarlikse instelling. Die foto is teen die agtergrond van ‘n muurskildery in Kaapstad wat deel vorm van Kaapstad as ontwerpshoofstad van die wêreld.
GRAAD 12 REKENINGKUNDE Die gr.12 Rekeningkunde leerders het op 20 Julie 2015 ‘n finansiële kursus, wat deur The Johannesburg School of Finance aangebied is, gedoen. Hierdie kursus word deur ‘n fasiliteerder van The Johannesburg School of Finance in die studiesaal van Huis MacFarlane aangebied en is ten volle op die KABV(CAPS) kurrikulum gebaseer. Buiten dat die leerders Rekeningkundekennis opdoen wat hulle in hul voorbereiding vir die September- en eindeksamen help, doen hulle ook ‘n klomp ekonomiese kennis op. Die blootstelling wat hierdie leerders aan die finansiële wêreld deur hierdie kursus kry, is vir hulle waardevol in hul gewone omgang as volwassenes. Hierdie drie leerders is die toppresteerders in Rekeningkunde en is genooi na ‘n ontbyt en inligtingsessie by Price Waterhouse Coopers in Paarl. Die rede van die uitnodiging na PWC was om leerders in te lig oor die geoktrooieerde rekenmeersters beroep, en die moontlikheid van kontrakte en beurse.

On Friday 21 August eight music learners from La Rochelle Girls’ Primary School participated in the annual “Music Mingle” workshop at Stellenbosch University where these young musicians had the opportunity to be part of an orchestral ensemble.

Mev Dalene Olivier het haar eerste verjaarsdag as skoolhoof van die klein Larries gedurende die vakansie gehad. Ons het dit na die vakansie gevier deur haar vir ‘n week lank elke dag te bederf!

Noord-Eind het op 7 Augustus Vrouedag gevier. Mev. Lita Roux en Mnr. Bertus Hanekom het die vrouepersoneel en dogters baie spesiaal laat voel met ‘n wonderlike boodskap en vertoning.
KONINGSKOSPAK
Koningskospak is nou verby en Mnr Verhoog het die lootjies getrek vir ons 2 trollie-pryse. Baie geluk aan Annette Wentzel en Ina Stoop. Geniet jul prys/ kruideniersware. Die klas wat die meeste lootjies verkoop het, is gr 1.1 van juf Leana Mouton wat weer deur die Spur bederf sal word. Leerders wat individueel die meeste verkoop het is: 1. Mela Botha, wat ‘n fiets geskenk deur Kroff fietse, wen. 2. Marvin Adams en Carlos Hayes, wen verskeie geskenkbewyse. 3. Izané Wentzel, wen ‘n partytjie geskenkbewys van Jollytotz Dankie vir almal se samewerking om hierdie projek ‘n sukses te maak. Ronel Loubser,OOV.

Hierdie groep gimnaste is gekies om Die Kaapse Wynland by die Suid-Zone Kompetisie in Oudtshoorn vanaf 27-29 Augustus te verteenwoordig

Baie geluk aan die volgende intermediêre en seniorfase leerlinge van Laerskool Gimnasium wat deelgeneem het aan die Afrikaanse voordrag en English recitation afdelings van die Paarl Vallei Eisteddfod. Hulle het uitstekend presteer en behaal 5 x Cum Laude; 6 x Goud+; 11 x Goud; 3 x Silwer+ en 7 X Silwer.
So ‘n oulike bekkie moet beslis jêm kry! Hierdie Grondslagfase leerlinge van Laerskool Gimnasium het gewoeker met hul talente en deelgeneem aan Afrikaanse voordrag en English recitation by die jaarlikse Paarl Vallei Eisteddfod. Hulle behaal 4 x Cum Laude; 10 x Goud+ en 7 x Goud.

Ons interskole teen Noord-Eind was een van die hoogtepunte van die derde kwartaal.
Ons “Baba-Blackies” het die jaar weereens Hugenote Hoërskool sterkte toegewens vir hul interskole teen Swartland.
TENNIS
Talitha Janse van Vuuren van Hugenote Laerskool het 8-10 Augustus ‘n TSA (Tennis Suid-Afrika) toernooi in Rondebosch gespeel. Dit was die WP mini series 4 nasionale toernooi. Sy het teen o.a dogtertjies van Duitsland gespeel en sy het altesaam 7 wedstryde en 102 potte gespeel. Talitha het tot die finaal deurgedring en het die enkels gewen. Sy en haar dubbelsmaatjie het ook die dubbels finaal gewen.
PANORAMA RUGBYTOERNOOI
Hugenote Laerskool se o/11A rugbyspan het op Saterdag, 1 Augustus aan die jaarlikse Panorama rugbytoernooi deelgeneem en die toernooi in hul afdeling gewen!!! Hulle het teen die volgende skole gespeel en gewen: Monte Vista LS 35-0 Riebeeck Kasteel LS 19-0 Bellview LS 25-5
