e’ve all only recently recovered from a very busy festive season where some of us folks probably gave to the needy, hungry or homeless. However, it is important to remember that those who suffer don’t only need our help over the festive season, but throughout the year. Start 2015 the right way and lend a hand (or paw) to help the SOS Children’s villages or NSPCA! We’ve been inspired by the classic movie remake of Annie (to be released nationally in theatres on 30 January 2015). Annie is a young, happy foster kid who is also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York. She never goes anywhere without her trusty sidekick, her beloved dog Sandy. This summer kids like Annie and animals like Sandy need your help.

Strawberries are a spring gem that bear the promise of bountiful summer fruits that will soon be available. Their keen fruitiness makes them a flavorsome salad ingredient too. What’s more they can be blended with the tiniest seasoning to make an instant and vibrantly colourful dressing. I like to select the firmest strawberries in the punnet for the salad and then use any riper strawberries to go into the blender. NEW YEAR’S TECHOLUTIONS FOR ALL FAMILIES IN 2015
By now most of us have already given up on our New Year’s resolutions, and still not went to the gym or sorted out the closet in the passage. How about a doover, a second chance – no, a challenge? To take up one or more of these New Year’s resolutions which are designed to be easy, fun, totally doable, and familystrengthening.
W
hether you’re tech savvy or a bit more on the primitive side, your family will undoubtedly face media and technology issues in 2015 as they become more ubiquitous, affordable, and essential to daily life. Best be prepared. 1. FOCUS ON CONTENT QUALITY, NOT SCREEN-TIME QUANTITY. This year, focus on becoming actively engaged in your kids’ media. Help them make quality, age-appropriate choices, play or watch together when you can, and talk about any issues that come up. Some days they may spend a little more time on the computer learning to code, but the next day they may end up making crafts
all day. It balances out. 2. PLAY A GAME WITH YOUR KID. Maybe you love video games, maybe you’d rather do just about anything else. The point is, kids love games. There’s a certain kind of bond that develops when families compete – plus, it’s fun. Playing games with your kids also imparts important skills, such as taking turns, winning graciously, losing gracefully, and practicing good sportsmanship. Look for video games the entire family can enjoy. 3. LEARN SOMETHING ONLINE. Make this the year you finally learn to crochet, play guitar, or master a foreign language – whatever you’ve longed
to do. With so many opportunities for online learning, from casual how-to’s to formal lessons, there’s no excuse not to. Your kids will see you work toward a goal, manage your time, be patient with yourself, and discover you’re not perfect at everything. Bonus points for taking a class with your kid! 4. EMBRACE THE NEXT NEW THING. At some point this year, a killer app, viral video, or hot new show will take your kids by storm. Keep an open mind and explore this new thing along with them. You’ll learn more about what your kids are doing, how they can safely use new tools, and how to guide them through a changing landscape. Ask: What’s your favourite new app, game, or website? What do you like about it? How can you make sure you’re using it responsibly, respectfully, and safely? 5. GO INDIE. Expand your family’s entertainment horizons with independently produced movies, TV shows, apps, and video games. Stepping away from mainstream offerings exposes your kids to cultural differences, non-stereotypical characters, creative storytelling, and thoughtprovoking ideas. 6. STOP TEXTING AND DRIVING. Nobody wants to admit it, but the accident statistics tell the real story: We are still texting and driving. Not only is it dangerous, it also sends a bad message to your kids when you ignore the law. Consider an app that temporarily disables the phone when you’re driving (and install one on your kid’s phone, too).

PRIMÊRE SKOOL WORCESTER BEGIN DIE ATLETIEKSEISOEN IN DIE VINNIGE BAAN … Dit was ’n trotse oomblik vir al die wat betrokke was …van veterane tot amateure, die skare het almal aangejuig. Dit was nie net n groot dag vir die deelnemers nie, maar ook vir al die trotse ouers, veral dié wie se “bloedjies” vir die eerste keer deelneem aan so groot ’n geleentheid. The cool breeze that was blowing wasn’t the only thing in the air ... As one would expect with such a day there were lots of excitement, anticipation and spirit in the air! Even the teachers and student teachers felt the spirit as they took their places for the relay races. Die direginte het hul van hul taak baie goed gekwyt en die gees op die pawiljoen
was iets om te beleef! Die temas was almal baie goed uitgedink en die pawiljoen was van bo tot onder net een see van Wit, Ligblou en Donkerblou. Maar op die ou einde was dit die DonkerBlou span wat met die titel as wenners van die Kleure-atletiek wegeloop het. Baie geluk aan hulle, maar ook so aan die ander twee spanne wat ook uitstekende pogings aangewend het. We would like to thank all the participants and all those involved with the arrangements. Die nuwe graad 8-leerders stap die eerste keer in die skoolsaal in met “Eendjies, eendjies, staan in ’n ry.”
Dit is so dat regerende politieke partye en gepaardgaande Onderwysdepartemente se doelwitte en uitkomste gedurig verander – dikwels met motiewe wat nie altyd in belang van die onderwys is nie. Die skool spog met ’n 100%-slaagsyfer en 8 A-kandidate. Die afgelope 20 jaar het ons skool nog net twee druipelinge gehad. Ons is baie trots op ons leerders. Akademie is ons prioriteit. Altesaam 71 van die 103 leerders kwalifiseer vir universiteitstoelating. JanaMaré Snyman, ons toppresteerder, se raad aan matrikulante is om hard te werk en betrokke te raak by jou skool. Die onderwysers beveel volgehoue harde werk aan, dan sal jy die vrugte pluk.

SA INTERPOVINSIALE KRIEKET Die afgelope vakansie het ’n paar Gimmies by die SA Interprovinsiale Kriekettoernooi werklik vir hulle verskillende spanne uitgeblink. Pieter Swart, wat gespeel het vir die o.17A-Bolandspan, is aangewys as Boland se speler van die toernooi. Frederich Conradie, wat gespeel het vir die o.17A-Plattelandspan, is aangewys as die algehele beste bouler van die toernooi waar hy 18 paaltjies laat kantel het. Hy ewenaar ook die rekord vir die meeste paaltjies geneem by hierdie toernooi. Vir hierdie prestasies is Frederich Conradie opgeneem in die SA Platteland -span, saam met nog twee Gimmies, Curtley Deelman en Ehtan Setera.

Die VRL van 2015 skop die nuwe jaar af met ’n leierskapskamp vanaf 23 tot 25 Januarie. Hoewel die hoofdoel van die kamp spanbou is, sal daar ook gefokus word op leierskap, persoonlike groei en jaarbeplanning.
SOKKER
Die Wes-Kaap Dowe Sokkerspan het die silwer medalje tydens die SA Nasionale Skole kompetisie verower. Vyf van die spanlede is leerders van De la Batskool.
NETBAL
Die Wes-Kaap Dowe Netbalspan het tydens die SA Nasionale Skole kompetisie in Pretoria die goue medalje verower. In die 7 wedstryde wat hulle gespeel het, het die span 145 doele aangeteken en slegs 18 doele teen hulle gehad. Vyf van die spanlede is leerders van De la Batskool.

Drostdy se 480 kg-meisietoutrekspan is in November aangewys as 2014 se beste skolespan in die Boland. Hierdie meisies het na slegs twee jaar wat meisies by Drostdy aan toutrek kan deelneem, die goue medalje by 2014 se SA’s gewen. Vanjaar word die SA Skoletoutrek by Drostdy aangebied. WYNAND EN CHEREE KIKKER DIE NUWE JAAR OP
Die nuwe skooljaar is op die regte manier afgeskop. Die laerskole se onderwysers het saam met die Drostdy-onnies kom partytjie hou. Die feestelikhede is ingelui in die historiese Drostdygebou se vierkant met ‘n uitstekende optrede deur die sangers Wynand en Cheree Strydom. Baie dankie aan Wynand en Cheree wat ekstra flair aan die aand verleen het.
NUWE GRAAD 8’S SE EERSTE SAALBYEENKOMS
Met 198 nuwe gesiggies, sien Drostdy uit om 2015 aan te pak. Die graad 8’s mag vir die eerste twee weke nie hul skoolbaadjies dra nie, maar na hulle oriënteringstydperk word daar ‘n amptelike baadjieseremonie gehou waartydens elkeen sy baadjie ontvang en ‘n ware Donkie word. Mag elkeen van julle daardie baadjie met trots dra!

NUWE ONDERWYSERS
Hoërskool Robertson is opgewonde om ’n nuwe toevoeging tot die personeel aan te kondig. Juffrou Nadia du Toit kom in die plek van me. Tineke van Zyl. Me. Du Toit is ’n kranige tennispeler en ons sien uit na die bydrae wat sy tot RHS-tennis gaan lewer.
Die ATKV-Jeugleiersimposium wat Sumari en Louis as hoofleiers bygewoon het, het twee dae voor die vakansie begin en was beslis ’n ervaring wat hulle nie sal vergeet nie. Dit het plaasgevind by die Goudini Spa net buite Worcester. Daar het hulle baie geleer oor hoe om konflik op verskillende maniere te hanteer en hoe om persoonlik te groei.
