CAMPS BAY LEARNER PADDLES TO VICTORY

Say hello to our Northern Suburbs & Monte Vista offices.

Camps Bay High School Grade 9 learner Holly Smith, together with her mixed double partner, Zak Jacobs paddled to victory at the Breede River Canoe Marathon last weekend. Holly (driving) and Zak are both 15 years old and river novices and were amongst 185 paddlers who started the Marathon on 4 September. They caused a sensation when they crossed the finish line ahead of the overnight leaders, Ian Traumann and Stephanie von der Heyde. Holly and Zak sprinted to victory to win the end-sprint by less than a boat length which resulted in their performance being dubbed the “Performance of the Race.”

Holly and Zak were first in the Mixed Doubles, the first U16 Crew to cross the line and finished in fifteenth place overall. Said Camps Bay High School Head of Sport, Ms Busi Ngcwama, “This is a truly phenomenal achievement and we couldn’t be prouder! Holly is proving to be a paddler to watch. At such a young age, she is able to take on much more seasoned paddlers and is proving to be a real force to be reckoned with!” Holly is now training for the Fish River Marathon, Pete Marlin and Cape Point Marathon. In between, she will also be taking part in the SA Lifesaving Championships to be held in Gqeberha in the school holidays.

Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was? H: Gideon Mocke. R: Jared Austi en Nicholas Molyneux. Kies een: • Tackle of Clean: Tackle • Dummy of Side-step: Side-Step • Wendrie druk of wenskop: Wendrie druk

IMARY

My span motiveer my omdat hulle my beste vriende is. Ons almal was so bly en so trots op mekaar.

Our First Ever Blouberg International School Arts Eisteddfod! The BIS Arts Eisteddfod was created to offer students a chance to build confidence and skills through performing to an audience and provide feedback from external expert adjudicators. It is also an opportunity to watch and share with fellow artists. The Music category took place on Wednesday, 11 August 2021 and students from primary and high school had the chance to dazzle us with their performances. As the music department, we aim to create multiple platforms for our students to perform in front of audiences and adjudicators, so that they have firm goals to work towards, and have the opportunity to learn something new and different from each experience. It is very important

for our musicians to not only learn how to play their instrument, but to also learn how to become a confident performer. We invited an external specialist as our adjudicator for the music Eisteddfod. All the students performed beautifully and we are so proud of their results. The BIS Arts Eisteddfod was launched by a collaboration of highly experienced teachers in their respective fields. Thank you to the following teachers: Mrs Beverley du Plessis and Heidi La Bercensie (Music Department); Mr Riaan Vosloo (Art); Mrs Carey Schoots and Ms Genevieve Kerswill (Poetry and Drama) We are very excited for this to be the beginning of a new annual tradition at our school!

VAN EDGEMEAD HIGH SC What makes it special to play for Edgemead High School’s first team? Playing for Edgemead High School’s first team has always been on my bucket list since I was in Grade 8. There has always been fantastic spirit amongst first team netball girls and the bond that is formed is truly amazing! Being captain of this awesome team makes this even more special. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? I think we are very strong in our attack this year and have the ability to move the ball swiftly down the court with our new improving techniques. What motivates you to give your best on the court week after week? My love of netball always motivates me and pushes me to new limits so that I can improve myself and learn new things during every practice and every game. The pursuit of excellence drives me. Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? Within the years that I have played netball for the first team, there have been many changes to the team and we adapt as we go, but this year, there are many fresh, excited faces. I think we all share the same love of netball and are all driven by one goal - TO WIN!

HOOL

VAN EDGEMEAD HIGH SC

What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? Our greatest achievement has been the whole of EHS netball moving up a league when the team and I played u/16 and we won gold at the Cape Town High Schools Netball Finals! 6. I think I’d say myself because I have moments where I break out in the most random dance moves at practice or other times when I make the weirdest jokes. Sometimes they aren’t even jokes, but the team still cracks up anyways. I definitely have many daft moments where I can’t grab the concept of the exercise, but I do know when to be serious and to act professional at practices. What is the most enjoyable time after a match? After a win, definitely the joy and spirit amongst us. We love to celebrate after a difficult fight and victory. After a loss, it’s nice to hear everyone comfort each other and mention tactics and ways in which we can improve. Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? My Matric hero (She was actually in grade 11 at the time) was the captain of 2019, Cassandra Westman, who is also currently coaching one of our u/14 teams. I can remember from when I was in Gr9 how I would look up to her and tell myself that one day, I want to be play in her team... and then the very next year I was selected to be in the first team where I could play alongside her.

What makes it special to play for Edgemead High School’s first team? What makes this special was watching every single EHS first team match throughout my junior years and being inspired to be like those men. That has evolved from aspirations, to being able to lead the team What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? The strongpoint of our team is our chemistry. Many of us have played together for many years and have grown together immensely. What motivates you to give your best on the field week after week? What motivates me is the passion and drive from each of the boys. That we are all working towards the same goal together. Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? What makes this team special is the bond that we have. Everyone loves each other. After many years of playing together, all of us are friends and socialise together.

What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? Our biggest moment was our u16 tour that was the beginning of our u18 journey together. It was the moment that created a friendship between each player. Who is the joker in the team, and why? The joke men are definitely Mark and Nicol. Their not being serious and interesting sense of humour always keeps us laughing. What is the most enjoyable time after a match? The best moment after a game is being able to celebrate the feeling together, that we got what we deserved and what we have been working for. Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? My matric hero was Unathi Nombewu. His ability to read and understand the game, and then share his knowledge and understanding to help everyone improve their own game was phenomenal.

RONDEBOSCH BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL Football Our first team football kit hand-over ceremony took place at the Rondebosch Boys’ High School Memorial Hall. The occasion was graced by our football sponsors, Auric Auto BMW and Sim Tours, as well as our kit sponsor, Laurus Sports. Auric Auto BMW is our headline sponsor. Laurus Sports sponsored both home and away kits to our first team. Mr Eric Scoble, of the class of E’78, represented Auric Auto BMW and Mr Sameeh McLaurie represented Sim Tours on behalf of Mr Rasthoem Simons. Roscoe Pietersen, current professional footballer for Cape United FC (1st division) and former Ajax Cape Town and Supersport United player, represented Laurus Sports, as he is their brand ambassador. The school is incredibly grateful for the continued support from our loyal sponsors, particularly in this present-day climate of the Covid-19 pandemic. Football at the school started off very small in 2010, where only u.15 and u.19 teams played football over a four-week period. Today, we are proud to say

that we have grown to 6 teams, with football classified as a major winter sport at RBHS, along with rugby and hockey. RBHS also boasts the highest number of football teams out of all the schools in the current league. Football is played as a full winter season. We have a dedicated professional coach for each team, thanks to Sim Tours for their involvement in this regard. With the financial aid, our coaches have most of the relevant equipment at their disposal for all practices. Mr Roscoe Pietersen (on behalf of Mr Grant Veitch of Laurus Sports), was thanked for delivering on a very sophisticated kit for our boys. Our players are very excited to don their new kit on the sports field. We are sure our players will wear these kits with pride as they represent Rondebosch Boys’ High School, on and off the field.

WYNBERG BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL Wynberg vs SACS Saturday 18 September 2021 Wynberg hosted SACS in the return fixture of the oldest schoolboy rugby derby in the country. Not only was this Wynberg’s first FNB Classic Clash live on SuperSport since 2016, glorious Cape Town Spring afternoon was the perfect backdrop to end the stop-start affair of the 2021 rugby season. Going into the fixture, Wynberg were clear favourites after beating SACS 46-5 on Memorial A a few short weeks back. SACS had the first opportunity to put points on the board, however, the SACS 10 hit the upright denying them a chance to build scoreboard pressure. Wynberg was first across the chalk with a great try by inside centre, Thaaqib Ryland. Wynberg’s hooker, the explosive Sifiso Mpanza, scored a brace of tries with the first using his size and power to crash over for the try, and the second receiving a flat pass, piercing the gap with a show and go and running 30 metres to swallow dive over the line. Wynberg fullback, Ryan Coetzer, added another try for Wynberg just before the halftime interval. Wynberg went into the halftime break as firm favourites with the score at 19-0 in favour of the hosts. The second half saw a more competitive SACS outfit, however they unfortunately conceded a penalty try as they illegally brought down the maul before the tryline. Discipline cost SACS at building any form of momentum as their fullback, La’eeq Cooper, was shown a red card for a dangerous tip tackle on Wynberg flank, Nick Evans.

Head Prefect, Ben Currie, leads his team out for the final match of the season.

Man of the Match - Sifiso Mpanza

As’ad Moos capped off a fine season for the Wynberg 1st XV as he dotted over after to add to Wynberg’s tally of 40 points to nil. SACS had the final say of the game when replacement centre, Bevan Jeary, scored in the corner with seconds left on the clock, leaving the final score at Lovers Walk 40-5. Wynberg had a season of which they can be proud. They managed to beat Rondebosch and SACS home and away. The mouth-watering clash between Bishops and Wynberg unfortunately was not be. But Wynberg’s performance to grab a ‘Double Crown’ will no doubt leave their players claiming bragging rights as the unofficial top southern suburb team of the 2021 season.
