This could be you in Antarctica! Five South African students from across the country will be given a once in a lifetime experience, an allexpenses paid adventure to Antarctica. You will explore this incredible landscape while learning more about the diverse ecosystem, sustainable and conservation. HOW TO ENTER Get inspired and write a mini essay answering the following question in 100 words or more: “If saving the environment is a global problem – how can YOU help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?” This competition is open to all 2021 matric students in South Africa. You don’t need to be a top student, you just need to showcase your passion for conservation and the environment. All entries need to be in by 31 October 2021.

HOW ARE THE WINNERS CHOSEN? Each essay will be read by pioneering explorer Riaan Manser and his team. From there, the top 100 essays will be chosen which will then be narrowed down to the top 5. The 5 winners will be announced in January 2022 and will depart for this epic adventure in February 2022.

See you in Antarctica for an adventure of a lifetime! For more information about the incredible competition visit www.matricsinantarctica.co.za

LILYFONTEIN SCHOOL Lilyfontein Adventure Race (Est. 2000)

Senior Leaders Executive 2022

Lilyfontein has been adventuring for over 20 years. We are strong believers in the benefit of adventurebased activities and the positive impact it has on our young people as it develops grit, endurance, resilience and character.

Leaders in 2022: • Ovayo Baku – Head Leader • Bulelwa Khubeka – Deputy Head Leader: Portfolio Junior Leader Liaison • Kate Page – Deputy Head Leader: Portfolio Interact, Junior Act and President of the Lilyfontein Interact Club • Erin Lutzke – Secretary

The Lilyfontein Adventure Race (AR) takes place over the first weekend in September each year. This event caters for adventure seekers that enjoy working in teams and enjoy cycling, kloofing, paddling, running, orienteering and more. This event usually attracts over 120 teams of 4 and 800 spectators. This year’s Lilyfontein Adventure Race ran as a hybrid/virtual format, and took place partly at Lilyfontein School (for Lilyfontein learners) and at Emerald Vale Breweries for members of the public. Teams that took part at Emerald Vale participated in a virtual format, whereby participants completed a running and cycling leg over the course of a weekend, and recorded / submit their distances using Strava or any other GPS recording app. The Lilyfontein Learners from Grade 1-6 were afforded the opportunity to enter their teams for a school event. This year, due to the level lockdown restrictions, Lilyfontein was not able to open these age groups to the broader community. It was wonderful to see the young adventurers having fun again. The Grade 1-3 learners enjoyed a wonderful windy afternoon adventuring in their 6km adventure race. Congratulations to the following teams who received podium finish. Well done on the great team work Foundation Phase. • 1st place: Team Lightning Lions Sage Biggs, Jordan Osmond, Alex Flavio, Daniel Braun • 2nd place: Team Lightning Lynxes Malia Hare, Molly Rankin, Blake Cloete, James Johnsen • 3rd place: Team The Olympians Carter Law, Luke Pederson-Horn, Tyler Jon Ledingham, Bella Rose Saayman The Grade 4-6 learners enjoyed a competitive sunny morning adventuring in their 12km adventure race. PORT REX TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL Rugby The 2021 Rugby season was one that the school was excited about. Our teams worked extremely hard during the off season for what would have been the toughest 4 opening fixtures, playing against Graeme College, Selborne College, Kingswood College and Hudson Park. We unfortunately were only able to play the first two fixtures. The Graeme College Derby was an exciting one with our u.14A team starting the day with a WIN which is huge for Port Rex Technical High School as we don’t have a feeder school. Another highlight of this derby was the first team match where our first team showed strength and determination in defending our line for the first half. This match went into the half time break at 0 – 0. We unfortunately ended up losing 17 points to 15. We then had the Selborne Derby, which is traditionally very tough for us, but our teams played with heart and never stood back. The highlights of the day would be the first team which trailed at half time by 12 points to 5, but ended up losing with a final score of 34 – 5. As a whole we had a short but memorable season with our head boy and first team co-captain Lihlumelo Mantewu being selected for the u.18 Craven week.

Front: Mr van Greunen Mr Ulana. 2nd row: Sisonke Furunek, Awonke Sondishe, Lihlumelo Mantewu, Onke Mqikela. 3rd row: Micheal Antwi, Kamva Gobani, Siphosethu maqinga, Libhongo Nkohla, Kuhle Tsotso. Back: Joshua Jack, Lulo Hlazo, Olwethu metuse.
