FRESH EGGS NOURISH THE MIND

Virtual sport series to showcase national school talent “The Showcase is a concept that was born during the Covid-19 pandemic and has grown to the first of its kind talent identification platform in South Africa”, says Gerhardi Odendaal, CEO of Old School Group, the host of The Showcase. “We designed this platform for athletes to improve their own ability at their own pace and to inspire kids that would not normally get the chance to showcase their talents to enter. Bobby Skinstad, Robbie Fleck and VanesMari Proudfoot have put their support behind this initiative and we are proud to combine their skills and knowledge, together with our industry specialists, within the programme”. The Showcase is a platform that gives school kids the opportunity to showcase their talent through sport-specific conditioning drills to determine speed, strength and skill level depending on the sport. Drills include the vertical jump, broad jump, sprinting, etc. and leaners submit the results of each test/showcase on the Showcase website and follow their results on a weekly leader board. The AWSUM School News platform and The Showcase recently came together to give kids from all over the country and all walks of life, irrespective of their background or status of the school they attend, the opportunity to compete against each other. “Think about it, for the first time ever a learner from HTS Middelburg can compete against a learner from Hoërskool Namakwaland in Springbok, so it made perfect sense to join this initiative”, says

Durandt van Zyl, CEO of AWSUM. “So many times, we see talent that gets lost in the crowds at schools. Now kids can enter and compete individually, and we present the best performers for contracting by talent seekers”.

The Showcase is a platform that gives school kids the opportunity to showcase their talent through sport-specific conditioning drills to determine speed, strength and skill level depending on the sport. The 3 phased series consist of: Phase 1: 10-week period where learners will complete sport specific conditioning drills Phase 2: The top performing entries from Phase 1 will participate at a live event against each other and have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of an audience of talent seekers, agents, varsity and high school recruiters, bursary givers, scouts and professional sports team coaches. Phase 3: A 4-day camp will allow players to develop skills and get tips from the best in the sports industry.

“Children between the ages of 12 and 18 can showcase their athleticism and fitness as part of this unique programme and make their talents visible to top recruiters. This also builds self-confidence and enables youngsters to perform on a broader platform to measure their performance against other learners across the country”, van Zyl concluded. Grade 9 subject choices: why you should start considering them now In a few months’ time, Grade Nine learners will be required to make important decisions about which combination of subjects they will be pursuing through to their final Matric exams. This is an important first milestone on the road to building a career, an education expert says, adding that while the decision would normally be left until later in the year, the world has changed so dramatically that Grade Nines should start thinking about this significant decision sooner rather than later. “The world changed last year – not just because schooling and work were disrupted and not just because both had to happen from home in ways never imagined before. The world changed because we are unlikely to go back to what we experienced in 2019,” says Natasha Madhav, Senior Head of Programme: Faculty of ICT at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest private higher education provider. “It has long been said that one needs to prepare young people for jobs that do not exist, but this has never been a concept that has been crystallised in a way that really helped one make decisions. Perhaps it is clearer now to focus on preparing for a world of work that is changed and focusing on industries and skill sets that are and will be in demand, rather than on jobs with names that are familiar to us. “So, for instance, law has not vanished as a field, but most lawyers now need to consult online as easily as they do in person and they can collaborate in real time with colleagues all over the place. They also need to be advising people on both physical and digital implications of what they do.” “The basic instruction is the same – develop an understanding of fields you are interested in and the things you are good at. Then look for jobs

and careers that seem future-focused. Then, look for institutions that not only offer future-oriented curricula, but whose teaching and learning and assessment are explicitly directed at a changing world”. This then links to smart subject choices, Madhav says. “If your field is likely to be scientific and technical and analytical, you are still well served to include maths and science and perhaps a technology subject. If your field is problem-solving and solution-oriented, then subjects like history and design or visual arts will provide that skill set. If you are looking for both, you will need both. Higher education institutions are not going to move away from some of the standard demands for particular high-demand disciplines or fields, so be sure that you understand what you need for admission and include these in your choices. One of the key issues to consider is the fact that automation is on the rise, and that technological adoption by companies will transform jobs and indemand skills in future. And, as noted by the WEF in their most recent Future of Jobs report, skills gaps will continue to be high as in-demand skills across jobs change in the next five years. As noted in the report: “The top skills and skill groups which employers see as rising in prominence in the lead up to 2025 include groups such as critical thinking and analysis as well as problem-solving, and skills in self-management such as active learning, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility… On average, companies estimate that around 40% of workers will require reskilling of six months or less and 94% of business leaders report that they expect employees to pick up new skills on the job, a sharp uptake from 65% in 2018.”

So where to start researching which careers will exist when you matriculate, and which of them might interest you? “A good place to start, on top of doing online research, is to find a higher education institution that has already demonstrated that they produce technically proficient and in-demand graduates, whose skills are aligned with what is required in the workplace because of their close industry connections. In other words, an institution whose curricula are up-to-date at all times, and that is able to quickly and resiliently respond to our fastchanging world. You will know who they are as they will confidently speak about change and flexibility and adaptability and about the link between study and work,” says Madhav. “By speaking to a student advisor at such an institution, which crucially must also be able to demonstrate that meaningful learning continued during lockdown, learners will be able to discuss their current interests and strengths, and then get advice and insight into which fields will be in high demand in future, and which subjects they can choose later this year, which will give them access to these fields.”

OOL

FROM STIRLING HIGH SCH

Congratulations on being selected as a leader at your school. What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader? I am hoping to be able to assist in returning things back to pre-Covid 19 standard. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Strengths: I am able to adapt to most situations; I am a fast learner and I can communicate well with others. Weaknesses: None whatsoever. (This is a joke.) Sometimes, I can be hard-headed and lazy. Is there anything you would like to change at your school? I would like the involvement in sport, especially rugby, to increase.

Who is your role model? Christian von Koenigsegg What are your plans after matric in 2022? Study at university and have fun. If you could be any superhero, who would you be and why? Green lantern. I could literally make anything using the green lantern ring. The only limitations are my imagination and will power.

TIA CASWELL HEAD GIRL

Congratulations on being selected as a leader at your school. What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader? I am really looking forward to working with my leadership team and getting to know the other prefects at my school. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Some of my strengths are timemanagement and working in a team. Although I am good at working in a team environment, I tend to do a lot of the work myself, so I need to work on my delegation skills. A weakness of mine is staying organized all of the time.

Matric is your final year, from an academic point of view, what are you aiming for? I am aiming to get good marks so that I can be accepted at the university of my choice and also to achieve a few distinctions.

Is there anything you would like to change at your school? No school is perfect, and especially now during the pandemic, school life is nothing like it used to be. Right now, it really is difficult balancing returning to normal with Covid-19, but if there is one thing that I would like to change it would be our school spirit. Covid has kept us apart for so long, so I am going to do all that I can to bring us back together as Stirlites.

What will your message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders? We’ve been at this for 11 years, what’s another 1 going to do? This is the final stretch; you can do it.

What do you love the most about your school? What I love the most about my school is its diversity. There are so many different people and opportunities.

What do you love the most about your school? The friendly students and teachers.

OOL

FROM STIRLING HIGH SCH

Matric is your final year, from an academic point of view, what are you aiming for? Academically, I am aiming to maintain my marks from previous years and achieve high enough to get into my first choice of university. What will your message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders? Right now, it is okay if you are confused and don’t know what to do. There is only so much that you can do, and your best is good enough. Who is your role model? Emma Watson is my role model. If you could be any superhero, who would you be and why? Iron Man. He is super smart, has ability to fly and is a great and inspiring mentor. Who is your Hollywood celeb crush? Harry Styles – he is perfect. Pick one: • Netball, rugby, cricket, or hockey? • I prefer Water Polo. • Cappuccino, hot chocolate, or tea? Tea. • Braai with friends or takeaways? • Braai with friends.

PORT REX TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL Academic Awards Ceremony

Lihlumelo Mantewu - Head Prefect

Port Rex THS was proud to have held our Academic Awards Ceremony for learners who did exceptionally well in what was a tough academic year in 2020. We would like to congratulate all the learners and teachers for their hard work and diligence in 2020. This is evident in the results that have been achieved.

After a two-week delay in the opening of schools we hit the road running with excitement for the new school year. Strange times have now started to normalize after almost 4 months of sitting in one classroom and rotating school days. We are now all at school full time and can switch classes between periods while still under strict COVID regulations and close monitoring. My group of prefects have been amazing thus far; one might think with such a big group, things can get complicated and frustrating. Yes, there have been such instances but I applaud my prefects for the effort and dedication they have for their badges as everyone comes together to serve a common goal. With the matric year at hand I thought that sleepless nights would start later on in the year but it seems that I have tricked myself. It is only a couple of weeks in and I’ve had a handful of sleepless nights. To the Matric Class of 2021, I would like to say that it’s only one year that you have to sacrifice, one year where you have to go through the pain and expose yourself to all your academic weak points and use them towards your advantage. The pain in temporary, it will subside and be replaced by great rewards, if you work smart like you’ve never worked before, however if you don’t, it will last forever. So, it’s time to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. Our Covid babies, the grade 8’s, sadly missed out on one of the most eye-opening experiences that I have ever had; the grade 8 camp. Any Port Rexian young or old, will agree that the Grade 8 camp is engraved in their memory and was highlight of their grade 8 year. It is very unfortunate that they didn’t get to go on camp because this would be the first glimpse, they get of what it truly is to be a Port Rexian. There is a silver lining in the dark grey cloud though as a couple of weeks ago we were delighted to hear that rugby at school- boy level is back. After only playing two first team games are was extremely joyful that I would have more games under my name. The boys have been Head Prefect working tirelessly during their three sessions a Lihlumelo week and our fingers are crossed that we don’t Mantewu go through a third wave of covid.

Special mention must go to Zimi Sikuza who got Academic Honours and is the only learner whose average for 2020 was above 80%. Well done Zimi! The following learners have all received Academic Colours: • Grade 9 of 2020, with an average of over 75%: Antonio Goddard, Malibongwe Mboniswa, Mila Mrwebi • Grade 10 of 2022, with an average of over 70%: Inga-inam Petu, Uyaviwa Dwane, Bulelani Pasha, Matthew Goosen, Lona Dunga, Denze van der Byl, Davin Dreyer, Lizole Sam, Morgan Venter, Junior Pangalele. • Grade 11 of 2020, with an average of over 70%: Masonwabe Sikiti, Shannon Vers, Liyanda Ngqeza, Lisakhanya Inise. Well done to all the learners and teachers who made these awards possible.

Cricket

Congratulations to Chelsea Marriott who did exceptionally well by obtaining a 1st position at this year’s first Eastern Cape Gymnastics Competition that was held in Port Elizabeth.

The public holiday was an exciting day for a number of our Gonubie Primary School cricketers. The following boys, who took part in the Stirling Cricket Festival at the end of last year, had the opportunity to play their age group finals at the Buffalo Park Cricket Grounds – what a wonderful experience for them to walk out onto such a prestigious pitch and see their names in lights on the scoreboard: Representing the “Stars” in the U11 Final: NJ Campbell (18 runs not out), Adam Hempel (13 runs not out), Riley van Aswegen, Aya Jamnda, Kellan Krause, Alonzo Lasher, Junior Makubalo Representing the “Trojans” – winners of the U11 Final: Sam du Preez (30 runs not out), Ben du Preez (11 runs) Representing the “Blazers” in the U9 Final: Allister Majola, Kungoyolo Nquma Later in the day, Ben and Sam du Preez were invited by the Gonubie Cricket Club men’s team to play in a friendly match. Little did they know that they would be playing alongside Sine Qeshile – a GPS old boy who is currently Captain of the Warriors and who has also played for the Proteas – an incredible rising star in South African Cricket. Ben achieved a 5 wicket haul and was awarded the match ball as well as a very special message and shirt signed by Sine Qeshile. What an honour for Ben and Sam to play alongside such a talent and to witness first-hand where hard work and dedication can take them. For all these young cricketers with BIG dreams, this was truly a day to remember.

Grom Games A huge congratulations to Bella Johnson for coming 1st in the u8 girls division in the Grom Games held in Port Elizabeth. Congratulations also goes out to Tyson Johnson who made the semifinals in the under 12 boys division.
