FROM OUR SIDE

WELCOME BACK!

I trust that you have had a wonderful break, and that everyone in your family is ready for what promises to be a great year. We’ve filled our first 2015 edition of AWSUM with many new gems, just for you. With our new redesign, editorial and school content will now be found on the same pages (with the former at the top and the latter at the bottom). We are also introducing a classifieds section where you can advertise your products and services. Do you give music lessons or work as a personal trainer? Perhaps you’re looking for someone to join your lift club or buy your car. Our classifieds are for you, and they’re a steal at R150 per month. In another move to promote our community involvement, we’re proud to introduce our AWSUM notice board. Here your school or organisation can list social events, markets, concerts and anything our readers need to know about. You will also be able to put up a poster or sponsor the board. If this sounds like your kind of advertising platform, please give our sales

consultants a call, or send an email to info@tiemedia.co.za. At AWSUM we love our schools, which is why we’ve created the AWSUM School of the Month award. For more information on how this prestigious title as well as a full page’s worth of bragging space can be yours, have a look at the criteria in the section below. WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN THIS ISSUE: • Annie movie competition, where you could win an AWSUM movie hamper. • 7 best back-to-school iPad apps. • Healthy recipes. • Family entertainment. • Fashion fix: how to get that celeb-look We hope you’re as excited as we are about the possibilities the new year holds. THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORROW!

W

e’ve all only recently recovered from a very busy festive season where some of us folks probably gave to the needy, hungry or homeless. However, it is important to remember that those who suffer don’t only need our help over the festive season, but throughout the year. Start 2015 the right way and lend a hand (or paw) to help the SOS Children’s villages or NSPCA! We’ve been inspired by the classic movie remake of Annie (to be released nationally in theatres on 30 January 2015). Annie is a young, happy foster kid who is also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York. She never goes anywhere without her trusty sidekick, her beloved dog Sandy. This summer kids like Annie and animals like Sandy need your help.

The SOS Children’s Villages Association of South Africa work for children who are orphaned or abandoned or whose families are

unable to care for them. They give these children the opportunity to build lasting relationships within a family. With villages in Ennerdale, Mamelodi, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg, Mthatha, Nelspruit and Rustenburg, these guys need our help. Please visit their website to see how you can aid a child in need. For more information on the SOS Children’s Villages Association of South Africa please visit http://sosvillages.org.za. Similarly, the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) takes animal welfare very seriously and its staff is committed to ensuring that animal owners recognise their responsibility to all animals in their possession. The NSPCA relies on help from their communities. There are 89 individual NSPCA’s throughout South Africa who rescue, take in and care for homeless, abandoned and neglected animals every day. You can help by donating pet food, blankets or toys and by joining the #LendAPaw campaign. You’ll find more details at www.annie-movie.co.za. Strawberries are a spring gem that bear the promise of bountiful summer fruits that will soon be available. Their keen fruitiness makes them a flavorsome salad ingredient too. What’s more they be blended with the tiniest seasoning to make an instant and vibrantly colourful dressing. I like to select the firmest strawberries in the punnet for the salad and then use any riper strawberries to go into the blender. Strawberries love black pepper, so be generous with the grinder in your hand.

TECHNOLOGY

NEW YEAR’S TECHOLUTIONS FOR ALL FAMILIES IN 2015 By now most of us have already given up on our New Year’s resolutions, and still not went to the gym or sorted out the closet in the passage. How about a doover, a second chance – no, a challenge? To take up one or more of these New Year’s resolutions which are designed to be easy, fun, totally doable, and familystrengthening.

W

hether you’re tech savvy or a bit more on the primitive side, your family will undoubtedly face media and technology issues in 2015 as they become more ubiquitous, affordable, and essential to daily life. Best be prepared. 1. FOCUS ON CONTENT QUALITY, NOT SCREEN-TIME QUANTITY. This year, focus on becoming actively engaged in your kids’ media. Help them make quality, age-appropriate choices, play or watch together when you can, and talk about any issues that come up. Some days they may spend a little more time on the computer learning to code, but the next day they may end up making crafts

all day. It balances out. 2. PLAY A GAME WITH YOUR KID. Maybe you love video games, maybe you’d rather do just about anything else. The point is, kids love games. There’s a certain kind of bond that develops when families compete – plus, it’s fun. Playing games with your kids also imparts important skills, such as taking turns, winning graciously, losing gracefully, and practicing good sportsmanship. Look for video games the entire family can enjoy. 3. LEARN SOMETHING ONLINE. Make this the year you finally learn to crochet, play guitar, or master a foreign language – whatever you’ve longed

to do. With so many opportunities for online learning, from casual how-to’s to formal lessons, there’s no excuse not to. Your kids will see you work toward a goal, manage your time, be patient with yourself, and discover you’re not perfect at everything. Bonus points for taking a class with your kid! 4. EMBRACE THE NEXT NEW THING. At some point this year, a killer app, viral video, or hot new show will take your kids by storm. Keep an open mind and explore this new thing along with them. You’ll learn more about what your kids are doing, how they can safely use new tools, and how to guide them through a changing landscape. Ask: What’s your favourite new app, game, or website? What do you like about it? How can you make sure you’re using it responsibly, respectfully, and safely? 5. GO INDIE. Expand your family’s entertainment horizons with independently produced movies, TV shows, apps, and video games. Stepping away from mainstream offerings exposes your kids to cultural differences, non-stereotypical characters, creative storytelling, and thoughtprovoking ideas. 6. STOP TEXTING AND DRIVING. Nobody wants to admit it, but the accident statistics tell the real story: We are still texting and driving. Not only is it dangerous, it also sends a bad message to your kids when you ignore the law. Consider an app that temporarily disables the phone when you’re driving (and install one on your kid’s phone, too).

EXTENDING AFTERCARE FACILITIES, MATHS AND COMPUTER ACADEMIES This term sees the opening of the new Maths and Computer Academies. These academies have been relocated to the main school building and their previous premises now form part of the newly extended Aftercare services provided by the school. We look forward to another year of excellent results produced by our Maths and Computer Academies. We are particularly proud of the achievements of Hudsonians in a number of Maths Olympiads last year. Our Maths Academy produced outstanding results last year. Pictured below are our Conquesta Maths Olympiad latinum award winners. Our learners achieved 45 platinum certificates (85% and above), and 46 diamond certificates (75-84%). At the Sasol SAMF South African Maths Challenge 69 of our 87 learners who had participated in the final round received certificates. We achieved 15 gold (85% and above), 35 silver, and 19 bronze certificates. Due

to his excellent results, Benjamin Brent was one of 5 learners nationally to be invited to the prestigious SAMF week long development camp at Stellenbosch University during December. The camp is seen as a first step in the selection of teams to represent South Africa at the International Mathematical Olympiad and the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad. We are proud that half of the top 30 learners in the Eastern Cape Wiskunde in Aksie Maths Olympiad were from Hudson Park Primary. These learners were invited to attend the Mathematics Fun Day at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The programme at the NMMU Fun Day comprises a brief interesting lecture, personal experience of several applications of Mathematics and a visit and demonstration at the Centre for High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy.

IMPROVING THE BEST ENGLISH ON THE BORDER

HUDSON PARK HIGH (t) 043 726 3205 (e) office@hphs.co.za

1ST DAY BACK AT SCHOOL

2015 is already in full swing at Hudson Park and the activities of the 1st day back at school were as busy as only the 1st day at a school of the new year can be. Forms had to be filled in, allocation of pupils into different sporting groups had to be done, new teacher assignments were allocated, and the new Grade 8s’ collection of workbooks was all part of the busy day at Hudson Park. HPHS wishes the new teaching staff as well as the Grade 8s’ a year full of excitement, participation and the necessary hard work to make their stay at Hudson a year to remember. The theme for Hudson Park High School this year, EAGLES CARE, was inspired by memories of the author Alistair McLean’s novel, Where Eagles Dare, which Mr R Hewett read as a 13-year-old boy. “I would like each one of us to CARE about: • How we approach our tasks, one another, our teachers and the public • Our appearance, achievements, manners • Our school buildings, facilities and equipment • Our attitude to opponents on the sports fields and other forums of competition • Our respect for our environment at the school level as well out there in the

ACADEMIC

While 2014 presented a number of challenges, which made it quite a difficult year, we also enjoyed some outstanding successes and achievements: Our matric results were excellent with a 100% pass rate, 3 with 8 As, 3 with 7As and 5 with 6 As and very high total of Bs. Two more Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellows were chosen from Hudson Park.

CULTURAL

Pierre Perold, his actors and the backstage crew are busy getting ready for quite a hectic drama season in the 1st term of school. Once again, the theme of the play (life in the Quigney) will be very controversial, as we have witnessed in the past but needless to say, brilliant as always. Get your tickets early, as the Hudson Park Drama Team will once again entertain us. community and while at the beach, using facilities or socializing And then I see the word CARE as a mnemonics ... each letter representing important concepts and values: C: for commitment and competence A: for attain and attitude R: for respect, resolve and resilience E: for enthusiasm and energy If those values and approaches can be applied at Hudson Park 2015 ... how can this not be an outstanding year? Just as Eagles are at the top of the food chain in the bird kingdom, so we as Hudsonians should strive to be at the top in all school pursuits. We should try to be winners. May 2015 be a year of EAGLES CARE for every one of us.”

NEW TEACHING STAFF AT HUDSON PARK FOR 2015: • Theresa [nee Heugh] van der Merwe – English • Kirsty Hodgskiss – Gr 8 to Gr 10 English and is a grade 10 base class teacher. • Busisiwe Ntombela – IsiXhosa • Lindsey Featherstone – Gr 8 Afrikaans, Gr 9, 10 and 11 LO and Gr 10 Maths Lit • Nonkhanyiso Sijadu – IsiXhosa • Wesley Wong – Music • Mark Tshidingi – History and LO • Joshua Clayton – Gr 8 to Gr 9 Maths • Dylan Hawkes • Tara Gravett We wish them all the best as new members of the Hudson Family.

SUCCESS ENABLES THE EXPANSION OF ITS SCHOOL

Since 2008, Lilyfontein School has been growing by a class per grade and this year we introduce a second Grade 8 class to our high school for the first time. This growth is testament to the success of our approach to teaching. This approach encompasses professional academic teaching, a strong sport and cultural programme and – the element that makes Lilyfontein School learners stand out from the

crowd – our adventure-based learning philosophy. Our 100% pass rate since 2008 bears out the success of this approach.

Teaching Maths and NS. “My goal is to help create valuable masterpieces with the young minds and spirits who cross my path. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to do just that, here at Lilyfontein.”

STIRLING ACHIEVES ECO-SCHOOL GREEN FLAG STATUS Three years ago Stirling High School registered as an EcoSchool and began working towards and attaining the bronze and silver awards. The Eco-Schools programme is being developed in South Africa as a schoolsimprovement programme that aims at achieving sustainable environmental management. The programme is designed to encourage whole-school learning and action for a healthy environment. Last

year Stirling worked towards the green flag and in this we were required to adopt three themes aimed at learning about environmental issues. We implemented several environmental projects and encouraged learning programmes for learners regarding environmental issues. Following these projects, Stirling attained the sought after Green Flag status and we will be flying our green flag with pride.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER, MRAR PIDERIT I would like to officially welcome everyone back to Port Rex Technical High School at the beginning of a new school year. To succeed you need to ensure that the parachute is packed correctly, that’s preparation! Academically, all books should be in their place and the correct equipment should be on hand. You need to prepare for the jump and you need to know where the ripcord is; you need to know what must be done and it must be practised. So that when you take that leap of faith at the end of the year out of that aeroplane you have a nice gentle and soft landing. I challenge you to show absolute commitment to a successful year.

“Life in the twentieth century is like a parachute jump: you have to get it right the first time.”
