Idees vir ’n Warm Winterhart-projek
D
ie winter is hier!

Gaan kyk ’n bietjie in jou kas – en loer sommer in jou broer of suster of ma of pa s’n – en tel ’n bietjie
Onthou die Engelse spreekwoord: “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!” MAAK KLEINGELD GROOT!

SHARE MATRIC YOUR MAGIC MOMEN FAREWELL ON FAC TS WITH US EBOOK !
Girls our matric dance can be one of the most spectacular nights of your schooling career and will be a memory that you never forget. But to get the most out of your night, you need to be sufficiently prepared so that you can have a stress-free, fun evening! HOW TO PREPARE - GIRLS: * The early bird catches the worm If you are going to get your hair, nails and make-up done by professionals, it is best to book your appointment at least 1 month in advanced to secure your spot before the other girls steal all the good ones! * Don’t rush the fun Give yourself enough time on the day of the dance. * Don’t book all your appointments on top of one another. Start your first appointment early (about 12) so that you have spare time if any appointments run late and so that you have enough time to dress and take plenty of photos. OUTFIT 911 * Let’s be honest, split seams and pigeon-toed waddles in high heels just aren’t attractive. So, when choosing a dress, shoes and jewelry, opt for something comfortable-
you will be spending approximately 6-7 hours in your outfit. * Make sure you can sit in the dress comfortably and walk in your shoes without cringing, especially if you plan on dancing the night away. HOW TO PREPARE - GUYS * Suite up When choosing a suite, go for an outfit that you won’t get too hot in. You will probably spend most of the night without your blazer on, so make sure your shirt underneath is looking snazzy. * It’s a good idea to order/book your suite about 2-3 months before the dance. BOYS AND GIRLS DATE DILEMMAS * To get the most out of your night, you should try to pick a date who you can talk to easily and who you get along with well. * Also, you need to give your date enough time to prepare themselves for your big night, so don’t leave the asking part for too late. Asking two months prior to the dance gives your date enough time to sort out their necessary arrangements. KEEP IT CLEAN * You may already be 18, but help a brother out and keep it clean for
this once? * Stay clear of alcohol, smoking and drugs before and during the dance. Its best not to indulge afterwards too because this really is a night that you want to remember… * Out of respect for your peers, teachers, parents, organizing committee and school, be well behaved and have some good oldfashioned innocent fun! * Don’t leave the party till after the dance WHAT TO EXPECT? * On the night At the dance itself, there will be plenty of mingling and chatting. From the arrivals to the photos, there will be a great deal of attention on you, so prepare yourself for all the jealous eyes. . . * Food will be served and you may have to listen to some speeches and thank you’s. Clap politely and keep the sarcastic comments to a minimum. You will be smiling A LOT, so prepare for sore cheeks. All those photos will take their toll… Lastly, just remember the whole night is aimed at allowing you to celebrate your 12 years of schooling in an enjoyable way with your friends. Make the night memory you will always cherish.

HANDY HINTS FOR YOUR HOME
These Handy Hints will remind you of the ways you can save around the home – some you may be able to do, and others you may not be able to do, but every single one of them can help you save money and energy. Even if you only choose one or two, it all adds up! FRIDGE/FREEZER • Check seals and doors. Doors need to close firmly. • Check the temperature. Fridges work best between 3° and 5°, freezers work best between -15° and -18°. • Room to breathe. Fridges and freezers run better with air circulating around them. HEATING • Check the temperature. Keep the room temperature between 18° and 21° in winter. • Seal those cracks and gaps with blockers like a door ‘snake’ • Throw on a jersey so you can turn your heater down
• Keep the curtains closed to keep the warmth in HOT WATER • Shorten your shower to save water, money and energy! • Fix those dripping taps. They can waste up to 1 litre of water/hour • Hand wash single dishes instead of using the dishwasher • Try a front loader washing machine they use less water and up to 60% less energy ELECTRIC PUMPS • Use the right size, and don’t pay for wasted energy • Install a timer, and only use it in off peak times or when you need to.

Some Like It Hot Let’s Cook! Lamb, Brinjal and Butter Bean Curry SERVES 4 TO 6 The weather is really getting chilly and I can feel the cold seeping right down deep into my bones and my belly is talking to me, saying that it got a message form my body, saying it needs to be heated from within. I must say I tend to agree with this body, I think it is time to start pulling out all the heartwarming comfort food recipes.
CURRY 2 long, large, firm brinjals, cubed 3 Tbs vegetable oil 3 Tbs unsalted butter 3 large onions, thinly sliced 5 cm piece fresh ginger, grated 15 ml coriander seeds, toasted and ground 15 ml cumin seeds, toasted and ground 5 cardamom pods, toasted and ground 5 ml turmeric 10 ml chilli powder 1 fresh green chilli, slit 1.5 kg lean cubed lamb or lamb knuckle 2 large ripe tomatoes, chopped 10 cloves garlic, crushed salt, to taste about 1 ½ cups boiling water ¾ tsp ground cinnamon 2 cups cooked butter beans 10 curry leaves (optional) 3 Tbs chopped fresh coriander RAITA 2 cups thick Greek yogurt, 1 medium English cucumber, washed, 1 tsp roasted ground cumin, 1 Tbs chopped fresh mint 1 Tbs chopped fresh coriander, 2 tsp fresh lemon juice & salt to taste.
To make the curry, salt the Brinjal cubes and let them sweat for 20 minutes. Rinse under cold water and pat dry. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan and brown the brinjals lightly - don’t cook them completely. Set aside till needed. Heat the butter and one tablespoon of oil in a large saucepan, add the onions and let them cook gently till they reduce down to two-thirds of their original size. Add a few drops of water if need be to stop them from burning. Now stir in the ginger, ground coriander, cumin, cardamom, turmeric and chilli powder, and cook stirring for a few minutes to release the fragrance of the spices, adding a few spoonful’s of warm water at a time to stop them from burning. Stir in the fresh chilli and lamb, and cook with spices for 5 minutes. Don’t let it stick. Add the tomatoes and garlic, season with salt and cover with a lid, simmering for 20 minutes. Lift the lid and add the boiling water, just enough to cover the lamb, and stir in the cinnamon. Simmer till the lamb is tender; about 50 to 60 minutes.
While the curry is simmering away, make the Raita. Place the yogurt in a bowl. Peel half of the cucumber and chop very finely. Dice the other half (with the skin on) and stir all the cucumber into the yoghurt with the cumin, mint, coriander and lemon juice. Season with salt and add a little more cumin if you like. Set aside in the fridge until needed. Just before you are ready to serve, add the beans, brinjals and curry leaves to the lamb, and cook till warmed through. Stir in the fresh coriander and serve with roti. or steamed rice, and the cucumber and mint Raita. Tip: Cook the onions nice and slow till they cook right down. The sugars cook out of them this way, giving you an amazing curry. © Jenny Morris extracted from the Book Taste The World with Jenny Morris

SPICE up your life! Turmeric is a popular spice for cooking, but it has a long history of medicinal uses, too. Turmeric provides a wide variety of benefits, but there are six standouts. Antioxidant The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which is known as a powerful antioxidant. This means it targets dangerous free radicals in the body and reduces the damage they are able to cause DNA and cells.
Anti-Inflammatory
Curcumin also has anti-inflammatory qualities. This makes it effective for fighting heart disease, osteoarthritis pain, and other health problems related to inflammation Curcumin is believed to reduce certain enzymes in the body known to trigger inflammation.
Heart Health Turmeric reduces the risk of blood clots and prevents the build up of plaque in the arteries, which helps in the battle against stroke and other clot-related problems. There are also studies showing turmeric is beneficial for reducing bad cholesterol and improving good cholesterol, both of which play a role in a person’s heart health.
Slows the Progression of Alzheimer’s Researchers studying the effects of curcumin in relation to Alzheimer’s cite the health of those living in regions that consume turmeric in high quantities. People in India aged 70 and older have a much lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease than those in the same age group in the United States. Many believe this difference is due to the high intake of Indian curries, which are made with turmeric. Further research points to turmeric’s ability to remove amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain, which is believed to put people at risk for developing the Alzheimer’s.
Skin Health
Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory benefits can be beneficial when applied topically, too. It is considered an effective treatment for psoriasis and other skin disorders, and it is a natural antiseptic and can be used to treat burns and cuts.
Cancer Fighter The jury is still out on just how effective turmeric is for fighting cancer. Some health experts point to its antiinflammatory benefits and draw conclusions based on the link between inflammation and the development of cancer. Free radicals and cell damage are believed to be linked to cancer, too, so if turmeric is able to work as an antioxidant it has a secondary anti-cancer effect.

Port Rex Technical High School JUNE 2014 7 Minrek Qiuz
We set out for the Minrek Qiuz, hosted by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, early in the morning, nervous and not knowing what to expect. There was a spirit of camaraderie on the way as we all bonded and made friends with the respective contestants from Beaconhurst and Hudson Park. On arrival, we wrote a test, which tested our mathematical and scientific knowledge. During the marking stage, we enjoyed a delightful lunch and were privileged to tour the South Campus of the NMMU. All the contestants were called in for the announcement of the results. It was announced that Ade Matafeni had progressed to the National Competition, while the Port Rex team progressed to the second round. A round of challenging questions proved to get the better of us and we were placed 5th overall in our category. A special thanks to Mrs S. Van der Vyver for making this trip possible and her support during the competition.

Clarendon High School Tennis Tournament Congratulations to the Clarendon First Tennis Team who participated in the Prestigious 17th Amanda Coetzer Tennis Tournament in Bloemfontein. We did extremely well and finished 6th competing against the strongest tennis schools in the country.
the heats and semi-finals. Carrie Warner continued building Clarendon’s momentum by outclassing her nearest rival by more than one hundred meters in the Girls U/16 Single Sculls final, winning Clarendons first Gold medal of the Regatta. Rounding off the day, Rebekah Anderson and Jessica King obliterated the competition by winning the u19 Pairs by a similar margin brining the medal count up to 2 Golds! In the u14 and u15 age groups, the Clarendon Scullers came to grips with the level of competition at National level as they rowed well, keeping the Clarendon flag flying high. Day two and three were allocated as Double and Quad race days. With wind in their sails, the Clarendon crews continued to make waves with many of them successfully out-rowing the competition to earn places in the finals. Some notable successes were:
South African School’s Championships 2014 The 2013/14 rowing season culminated in the South African Schools Championships held at the Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria from the 7th to the 9th of March this year. Thirtyseven schools from around the country took part, of which 18 schools fielded girls crews, Clarendon being one. Unlike years gone by, the weather conditions were less than ideal with heavy rains predicted on all the days. This didn’t
deter the organizers, rowers or spectators and a riveting albeit uncomfortable three days of racing was had. The rowers set the tone on the first day during which the Single Sculls and Paired Oars were rowed. Clarendon made its presence felt in the under 19 and under 16 divisions starting with Karena Naidu placing 7th out of 48, in a hotly contested u19 final after beating back the other u19 rowers in
- U14 Quad crewed by Carla vanWyk, Danielle de Silva, Nikita Bouchier, Tamryn Roux and Kayleigh Mileham finished 8th. - U15 Double crewed by Jayde Harty and Mia Donald finished 5th. - U15 Quad crewed by Jayde Harty, Tayla Corby, Bronwyn Boting, Andrea van Wyk and Mia Donald placed 4th . - U16 Double crewed by Kelly Langenberg and Tecara Strydom finished 7th.
- U16 Quad crewed by Amy Bayman, Inke Cronje, Kelly Langenberg, Tecara Strydom and Kylie Birch finished 5th. The Grand Finale of course is always the U19 First Quads. The Clarendon crew of Rebekah Anderson, Jessica King, Karena Naidu, Carrie Warner and Sarah Weiss sailed through the heats to race sublimely in the A Final, finishing an exhilarating race in third place behind the winners Saint Andrews Girls and only six tenths of a second behind the runners up crew of Saint Mary’s, making history as the first Clarendon First Quad to medal at the South African School’s Championships. Clarendon’s successes were no mean feat given that only 20 girls (four Quad crews)represented Clarendon at the Championships versus others schools two to three crews in each age group. Head Coach Bill Godfrey and his coaching team of Carl de Beer, Tarryn Wienand and Sheldon Hutchinson were very satisfied with the performances of the Clarendon Crews, having placed fifth overall at the Regatta. With a new standard being set at these Championships, the coaches have already set their sights forward to the 2014/15 rowing season, looking to better Clarendon’s stirling performances this year. Congratulations to the Clarendon rowing crews and their coaches.

Rugby
Hudson Park rugby players recently visited Marlow in Cradock and both the coaches and their rugby teams were hosted by Marlow. They enjoyed a braai on Friday night, well presented by Marlow.
The next day was a different affair as hard-fought rugby was the main dish on the menu with many injuries picked up during the games played.
Abongile hanging on for dear life and preventing the Marlow prop from going anywhere.
Exams The June exams are in full swing and hopefully the necessary study timetables are in the correct sequence for all the pupils here at Hudson Park. Commitment to their studies was witnessed in Cradock, at midnight, when a group of pupils were seen studying after lights out was called in the hostel. The next day they showed their commitment on the rugby field against Marlow where the 1st XV made history outplaying their opponents in a 38-29 result in our favour. The grades 10, 11 and 12 pupils started writing the June exams on Monday 26 May with the Grade 8 and 9 pupils putting pen to exam paper only a week later. Overseas Tour
A free-spirited young Austrian woman, Maria (Kerry Hiles), is studying to become a nun. Due to her often singing and running seeming somewhat out of place in the abbey, Mother Abbess (Marina Pienaar), sends her to the nearby city of Salzburg to be governess to the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp (Germaine Gamiet). She later marries Captain von Trapp, after realizing her feelings towards him. The Sound of Music contains several popular songs, including “Edelweiss”, “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “DoRe-Mi”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”, “The Lonely Goatherd”, and the title song, “The Sound of Music”. The show ran from 11 - 15 March 2014.
In the March holidays, Ms Cindy Meade & Ms Teneille Venter travelled with 14 Stirling students on an overseas tour to the United Kingdom and France. Pictured is the Arc de Triomphe, one of the most famous monuments in Paris.
