Idees vir ’n Warm Winterhart-projek

D

ie winter is hier!

AWSUM News is distributed to the following schools: EAST LONDON: Primary schools: Voorpos Primary, Nahoon Primary, Lilyfontein Primary, Gonubie Primary, Clarendon Primary, Preparatory School, George Randell Primary, Cambridge Primary. PRIMARY SCHOOL

Gaan kyk ’n bietjie in jou kas – en loer sommer in jou broer of suster of ma of pa s’n – en tel ’n bietjie

Onthou die Engelse spreekwoord: “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!” MAAK KLEINGELD GROOT!

HANDY HINTS FOR YOUR HOME

These Handy Hints will remind you of the ways you can save around the home – some you may be able to do, and others you may not be able to do, but every single one of them can help you save money and energy. Even if you only choose one or two, it all adds up!

FRIDGE/FREEZER

• Check seals and doors. Doors need to close firmly. • Check the temperature. Fridges work best between 3° and 5°, freezers work best between -15° and -18°. • Room to breathe. Fridges and freezers run better with air circulating around them.

• Throw on a jersey so you can turn your heater down • Keep the curtains closed to keep the warmth in

HEATING

HOT WATER

• Check the temperature. Keep the room temperature between 18° and 21° in winter. • Seal those cracks and gaps with blockers like a door ‘snake’

• Shorten your shower to save water, money and energy! • Fix those dripping taps. They can waste up to 1 litre of water/hour • Hand wash single dishes instead of using the dishwasher • Try a front loader washing machine they use less water and up to 60% less energy

ELECTRIC PUMPS

• Use the right size, and don’t pay for wasted energy • Install a timer, and only use it in off peak times or when you need to • Use a pool cover, this can reduce the need for filtering.

and save a life!

WEES GEDULDIG.

AWSUM Kombuis JUNE 2014 3

Some Like It Hot Let’s Cook! Lamb, Brinjal and Butter Bean Curry SERVES 4 TO 6 The weather is really getting chilly and I can feel the cold seeping right down deep into my bones and my belly is talking to me, saying that it got a message form my body, saying it needs to be heated from within. I must say I tend to agree with this body, I think it is time to start pulling out all the heartwarming comfort food recipes.

CURRY 2 long, large, firm brinjals, cubed 3 Tbs vegetable oil 3 Tbs unsalted butter 3 large onions, thinly sliced 5 cm piece fresh ginger, grated 15 ml coriander seeds, toasted and ground 15 ml cumin seeds, toasted and ground 5 cardamom pods, toasted and ground 5 ml turmeric 10 ml chilli powder 1 fresh green chilli, slit 1.5 kg lean cubed lamb or lamb knuckle 2 large ripe tomatoes, chopped 10 cloves garlic, crushed salt, to taste about 1 ½ cups boiling water ¾ tsp ground cinnamon 2 cups cooked butter beans 10 curry leaves (optional) 3 Tbs chopped fresh coriander RAITA 2 cups thick Greek yogurt, 1 medium English cucumber, washed, 1 tsp roasted ground cumin, 1 Tbs chopped fresh mint 1 Tbs chopped fresh coriander, 2 tsp fresh lemon juice & salt to taste.

To make the curry, salt the Brinjal cubes and let them sweat for 20 minutes. Rinse under cold water and pat dry. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan and brown the brinjals lightly - don’t cook them completely. Set aside till needed. Heat the butter and one tablespoon of oil in a large saucepan, add the onions and let them cook gently till they reduce down to two-thirds of their original size. Add a few drops of water if need be to stop them from burning. Now stir in the ginger, ground coriander, cumin, cardamom, turmeric and chilli powder, and cook stirring for a few minutes to release the fragrance of the spices, adding a few spoonful’s of warm water at a time to stop them from burning. Stir in the fresh chilli and lamb, and cook with spices for 5 minutes. Don’t let it stick. Add the tomatoes and garlic, season with salt and cover with a lid, simmering for 20 minutes. Lift the lid and add the boiling water, just enough to cover the lamb, and stir in the cinnamon. Simmer till the lamb is tender; about 50 to 60 minutes.

While the curry is simmering away, make the Raita. Place the yogurt in a bowl. Peel half of the cucumber and chop very finely. Dice the other half (with the skin on) and stir all the cucumber into the yoghurt with the cumin, mint, coriander and lemon juice. Season with salt and add a little more cumin if you like. Set aside in the fridge until needed. Just before you are ready to serve, add the beans, brinjals and curry leaves to the lamb, and cook till warmed through. Stir in the fresh coriander and serve with roti. or steamed rice, and the cucumber and mint Raita. Tip: Cook the onions nice and slow till they cook right down. The sugars cook out of them this way, giving you an amazing curry. © Jenny Morris extracted from the Book Taste The World with Jenny Morris

SPICE up your life! Turmeric is a popular spice for cooking, but it has a long history of medicinal uses, too. Turmeric provides a wide variety of benefits, but there are six standouts. Antioxidant

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which is known as a powerful antioxidant. This means it targets dangerous free radicals in the body and reduces the damage they are able to cause DNA and cells.

Anti-Inflammatory

Curcumin also has anti-inflammatory qualities. This makes it effective for fighting heart disease, osteoarthritis pain, and other health problems related to inflammation Curcumin is believed to reduce certain enzymes in the body known to trigger inflammation.

Heart Health

Turmeric reduces the risk of blood clots and prevents the build up of plaque in the arteries, which helps in the battle against stroke and other clot-related problems. There are also studies showing turmeric is beneficial for reducing bad cholesterol and improving good cholesterol, both of which play a role in a person’s heart health.

Slows the Progression of Alzheimer’s

Researchers studying the effects of curcumin in relation to Alzheimer’s cite the health of those living in regions that consume turmeric in high quantities. People in India aged 70 and older have a much lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease than those in the same age group in the United States. Many believe this difference is due to the high intake of Indian curries, which are made with turmeric. Further research points to turmeric’s ability to remove amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain, which is believed to put people at risk for developing the Alzheimer’s.

Skin Health

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory benefits can be beneficial when applied topically, too. It is considered an effective treatment for psoriasis and other skin disorders, and it is a natural antiseptic and can be used to treat burns and cuts.

Cancer Fighter

The jury is still out on just how effective turmeric is for fighting cancer. Some health experts point to its antiinflammatory benefits and draw conclusions based on the link between inflammation and the development of cancer. Free radicals and cell damage are believed to be linked to cancer, too, so if turmeric is able to work as an antioxidant it has a secondary anti-cancer effect.

Beaconhurst Primary JUNE 2014 7 Jersey Week

For the past month the learners at Beaconhurst School have very generously been donating jerseys and other warm items for the annual Jersey Week. The EarlyAct Club at Beaconhurst organised this. This year we collected a record number of jerseys and were able to fill up an entire

bakkie load of jerseys. The jerseys were then donated to the Rotary Club who distributed it to those who need it most. In the photo you can see some of the grade 7 boys who helped to load the bakkie with the jerseys. Well done to everyone who donated and collected the jerseys.

The Floating Ball Tower

Two of our grade 7 learners really showed off their creativity, by creating a tower that included a hairdryer, which blew air from the top of the tower. They then balanced two balls in this column of air and the balls moved up and down as the air blew. Here you can see Sandisiwe Langeni and Brandon De Klerk with their tower. Good job!

Squash Players

Two of our learners have made us extremely proud by being selected to represent Border Schools Squash at the respective U/11 – 13 IPT’s to be held from 28 June – 2 July 2014. Matthew Busse and C-Jay Jacks are two of the players from our squash team who will represent our school in the matches. Well done, boys.

EarlyAct Club visits Kenisley Park Old Age Home

Technology Project The grade 7 learners had so much fun building various towers in Technology. The learners had to plan, design and physically build their towers in class and the results were amazing. Some of the learners proved to be engineers in the making, building the most impressive towers all by themselves. Well done, grade 7s.

The learners in the EarlyAct club visited the old age home in Beacon Bay. They spend the afternoon with the residents where they entertained them with music items, plays and poems. They also treated the residents to some teatime treats. It was a lovely afternoon.

George Randell Primary Study Skills Workshop A Study Skills Workshop was conducted for the Grade 7 learners. The workshop included how the brain learns, the different styles of learning as well as The Laws of Effective Learning.
