This could be you in Antarctica! Five South African students from across the country will be given a once in a lifetime experience, an allexpenses paid adventure to Antarctica. You will explore this incredible landscape while learning more about the diverse ecosystem, sustainable and conservation. HOW TO ENTER Get inspired and write a mini essay answering the following question in 100 words or more: “If saving the environment is a global problem – how can YOU help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?” This competition is open to all 2021 matric students in South Africa. You don’t need to be a top student, you just need to showcase your passion for conservation and the environment. All entries need to be in by 31 October 2021.
HOW ARE THE WINNERS CHOSEN? Each essay will be read by pioneering explorer Riaan Manser and his team. From there, the top 100 essays will be chosen which will then be narrowed down to the top 5. The 5 winners will be announced in January 2022 and will depart for this epic adventure in February 2022.

Parel Vallei HS musicians excel at Stellenbosch Eisteddfod The 85th annual Stellenbosch Eisteddfod saw 45 learners from Parel Vallei perform 63 items in 12 different instrumental and vocal categories for a total of 25 Cum Laude awards (90% and above). CURRO SITARI High School culture achiever
Ride like a pro
Tiana van der Westhuizen (9E2) is one of 30 learners who has been selected to be part of Curro Create AMP (Advanced Mentorship Programme). What makes Tiana’s achievement exceptional is not only her outstanding writing talent, but also the fact that over 6000 entries were received for the Curro Create CAS Competition. Congratulations!
Sean Herron (10E2) competed for Curro Sitari in SANESA Q4 at Stellenbosch District Riding Club on the 26th June. He achieved first place in Dressage Novice Test 4 and first place in Dressage Novice Test 5 in the Metro District. In addition, he took second place in the equitation 60cm test. Curro Sitari is now on the board in the Metro District and is leading in these two disciplines and classes. During this year, Sean has competed in the Dressage SA National Challenge and is currently ranked 8th In the Western Cape and 28th nationally. Sean is currently working on three additional national qualifiers leading up to SA Youth Championships at the end of the year.
Curro Sitari’s very own dancing queen Cara van den Berg (8E1) took part in the Western Province Dance Trials during the last week of July 2021. She entered for 12 dance items, which included Hip Hop, Musical, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary Ballet and Open category and achieved an average of above 75% for all her items, which qualifies her for WP Dance Team. Cara did exceptionally well in her Hip Hop solo for which she got 86%. She will receive her WP blazer at a special ceremony on 28 August 2021. We wish her all the best for the SA Championships that takes place in Pretoria during October.
E-Sports National Champs A monumental win for Curro Sitari at this year’s Curro Minecraft Duo’s National League. Jubilations and facilitation to our u12 Minecraft team who have taken 1st place in this weekend’s Minecraft league final. The duo Jadon (Steele and Aerin Hart) competed against the top 8 best Minecraft schools in the country to be crowned national champions. We are extremely proud of their achievement and look forward to hearing more from the Dynamite duo in the future.

HOËRSKOOL PAREL VALLEI “Hansie Slim” van PV is die Wenners van die Wes-Kaapse ATKV-Tienertoneel-streeksfees! Die toneelspanne van “Hansie Slim”, “DORS” en “Verkleurmannetjie” (al drie produksies van die Hoërskool Parel Vallei) het deelgeneem aan die Wes-Kaapse ATKV-Tienertoneel-streeksfees. Daar heers nou groot vreugde nadat die volgende leerders aangewys is as kategoriewenners: • • • • •
Parel Vallei’s Drama Department attended the Montagu Drama Festival from 20-22 August and entered 4 plays: ‘Commercial Break’, ‘Dors’, ‘Hansie Slim’ and ‘Verkleurmannetjie’. The learners thoroughly enjoyed this experience and did exceptionally well by receiving the following results:
Beste Ensemble: “Hansie Slim” Beste hantering van tegniese aspekte: “DORS” Beste verhoogbestuurder: Jelena Jerling (“DORS”) Beste klankoperateur: Lindsay Adams (“Hansie Slim”) Beste beligtingsoperateur: Peter-Ivan Mitrovich (“Verkleurmannetjie”)
Die produksie “Hansie Slim” is ook aangewys as die BESTE PRODUKSIE vir die Wes-Kaap-streek tydens dié fees! Die naaswenner was Hoërskool Jan van Riebeek en Hoërskool Bellville het in die derde plek geëindig. “Hansie Slim”, ’n nuutgeskrewe teks, is ‘n drama wat handel oor Hansie Slim, ‘n gewone skoolkind, wat druk op homself plaas om akademies te presteer, wat ‘n rolmodel probeer wees en ‘n teorie probeer ontdek wat die wêreld kan verander. Hansie en sy medeleerders ontdek egter gou dat daar altyd berge sal wees wat geklim moet word in hierdie wye wêreld waarin ons leef. Die vraag is of Hansie moedig kan volhou. Die stuk is treffend en spreek alledaagse tienerkwessies aan. Parel Vallei is besonder trots op die uitslae en bedank graag die ATKV wat leerders dié nasionale platform gee om kreatief te kan wees en te kan groei in ‘n kompeterende; dog lekker omgewing saam met ander skole. Agter elke suksesvolle hoërskoolproduksie staan daar ook wonderlike onderwysers bankvas agter die leerders en by Parel Vallei is dit mee. Adél van Wyk en Karen Rohwer. Mnr. Darryl Spijkers is die hoof van Drama by PV en word ook bedank vir die konstante toewyding en energie waarmee hy die dramaseisoen aangepak het. Dié onderwysers maak ‘n blywende indruk op leerders!

GENERATION SCHOOLS SOMERSET WEST Generation Schools join forces with eta Varsity

Some exciting news is that from January 2022, Generation Schools Somerset West will be offering a vocational pathway, through eta Varsity and the Sí Institute which is a new subsidiary of Generation Schools. The Sí Institute is an innovative tertiary-in-secondary stream that allows students to accelerate their journey by unlocking alternative learning approaches while still in high school. Sí uses a blended approach to education where students engage in both online and on-campus learning. Sí is asynchronous, meaning students can start at any time of the year, allowing them to work through content at their own pace while gaining invaluable real-world experience. Through the Sí pathway, students will complete their Matric equivalence National Qualifications Framework 4 (NQF) certificate, as well as commence a tertiary course while still at school. The initial offering will be a wellness option — a Further Education and Training (FET) Certificate in Sports Administration that incorporates a Fitness Instructor course. Both these qualifications are accredited through the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and will provide students with an NQF 4 equivalence certificate.
Angel Williams (Grade 7) competed at the Kenyan National Swimming Championships earlier this month. Angel won 3 gold and 2 silver medals. We congratulate Angel on this outstanding achievement.

HOËRSKOOL STRAND Twee HS Strand leerders skitter tydens Stellenbosch Eisteddfod 2021 Inskrywings vir die Stellenbosch Eisteddfod het vanjaar vir die eerste keer in sy geskiedenis virtueel geskied. Verskeie leerders van HS Strand het nie op hulle laat wag nie en die geleentheid om vir die Drama-afdeling (woordkuns) in te skryf met ope arms aangegryp. Twee leerders het egter vanjaar weer groot indruk gemaak: Derik Nortje (gr. 12) het drie Cum Laude-toekennings ingeryg, terwyl Clint Williams twee Cum Laude-toekennings ingepalm het. Na afloop van die eisteddfod is beide leerders ook met gesogte pryse vereer: Derik Nortje: • Stellenbosch Eisteddfod-medalje vir beste Drama-deelnemer in graad 12 • Stellenbosch Eisteddfod-medalje vir Veelsydigheid • H du Toit-beker vir die beste Hoërskool Drama-seun • Andreas van Wyk-beker vir beste deelnemer in die Senior Dramatiese Kunste Clint Williams: • Mathilda Walters-Vlok Trofee vir deurlopende prestasie en deursettingsvermoë HS Strand is trots op hierdie twee leerders wat hulle nie deur al die Covid-beperkinge laat onderkry het nie.

Christopher Smit se Hamergooi beïndruk Christopher Smit het op Saterdag (18 September) aan die Worpe-byeenkoms op Mosselbaai deelgeneem en ’n eerste plek behaal met ’n nuwe byeenkoms rekordpoging van 62,90m. Met hierdie afstand het hy ook sy persoonlike beste afstand met omtrent 2 meter verbeter. Hierdie poging was selfs verder as sy poging by die Suid-Afrikaanse Kampioenskap in April, toe hy die goue medalje behaal het. Die organiseerder van die byeenkoms se gelukwensing kom Christopher beslis toe: “Baie geluk met Christopher se prestasie. Dit was ‘n voorreg om hom te kon sien gooi!”
