This could be you in Antarctica! Five South African students from across the country will be given a once in a lifetime experience, an allexpenses paid adventure to Antarctica. You will explore this incredible landscape while learning more about the diverse ecosystem, sustainable and conservation. HOW TO ENTER Get inspired and write a mini essay answering the following question in 100 words or more: “If saving the environment is a global problem – how can YOU help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?” This competition is open to all 2021 matric students in South Africa. You don’t need to be a top student, you just need to showcase your passion for conservation and the environment. All entries need to be in by 31 October 2021.
HOW ARE THE WINNERS CHOSEN? Each essay will be read by pioneering explorer Riaan Manser and his team. From there, the top 100 essays will be chosen which will then be narrowed down to the top 5. The 5 winners will be announced in January 2022 and will depart for this epic adventure in February 2022.
See you in Antarctica for an adventure of a lifetime! For more information about the incredible competition visit www.matricsinantarctica.co.za

CURRO NELSPRUIT 2021 National English Olympiad The theme for the 2021 National English Olympiad was “People and Personas”. Candidates were presented with a short selection of interesting writings that included poetry, prose and a dramatic monologue in the anthology, This is My Story. There were a few online discussions regarding the work, but the candidates have to prepare themselves for the unexpected. Questions include: “Write a dialogue for the blind date between the characters from two different short stories in the anthology.” It encourages critical thinking and creative writing. It examines that which is not ordinarily found in the school syllabus. The focus is on the relevance of literature in your personal life and the world around you. Ms Lize van Eeden in Grade 12A1 attained 5th place in the First Additional Language examination with a mark that was above 90% (a Diamond award). She has silver awards from the 2019 and 2020 English Olympiads. There were more than 4400 entrants from 243 schools that participated in this year’s Olympiad. This is an exceptional achievement! She receives a cash prize from the Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education (SACEE) as well as a full tuition scholarship for any first year course of study at Rhodes University.
Safaa Jina
Also in First Additional Language, fellow matriculant, Marlouise Mengel, received a Gold (80-89%). Our Head Girl, Safaa Jina, achieved a Silver certificate (70-79%) in Home Language. Although there were fewer than usual candidates writing the examination this year, we are extremely pleased with the results, not only from our Grade 12s, but also from other participants. Saul Musker, a young man who achieved 2nd place in the 2012 English Olympiad, wrote to the Foundation saying: “For me, the Olympiad is more than just another exam or competition. It is protected time for creativity; a dedicated three hours devoted to writing. I only wish I could write one every day, to escape the usual chaos of our existence, to let the ink pour out of my grateful mind.” This is published on their website as it epitomises the experience of this fascinating Olympiad.

MOSHE LENTORO RUGBY CA
FROM ROB FEIRRERA HIGH
SCHOOL
What makes it special to play for Rob Ferreira High School’s first team? I consider my fellow teammates as my brothers on and off the field. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? The backline players are our strong point this year. What motivates you to give your best on the field week after week? I love this sport. It makes me think of my future, how I really want to play for a certain team. So, I can’t back down. Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? We told each other that it doesn’t matter if we are not blood brothers, on the field, we are brothers. We protect each other. When we lose, we lose as a team and do not point fingers and say that anyone is the reason we lost. When one of us falls, we fall as a team. When one of us rises, we rise as a team. What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? Multiple players have been making the provincial team. The boys who are playing for the Pumas. Who is the joker of the team and why? Luhan, he’s always trying to keep our spirits up. He doesn’t want the guys to sit and sulk the whole day. He wants the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team to bond like brothers, not just the 1st or 2nd but all 3 squads. He loves rugby, but it won’t be fun without the boys. What is the most enjoyable time after a match? Appreciating the supporters of our school and our coaches for not losing hope in us whenever we are behind with the score. Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? Muziwami Ntiwane.
Q & A with L CAPTAIN
MAAKANA XONGILE NETBAL
FROM ROB FEIRRERA HIGH
What makes it special to play for Rob Ferreira High School’s first team? Rob Ferreira is not your ordinary school. It’s a school of high calibre and has a great reputation, especially on the sports side. So to be one of the many students who help uphold this reputation by being in one of the teams, and not just a team but the first team, is a great honour. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? We are all emotionally intelligent so during and after a game we are able to communicate freely and express how we think each player played without anyone really taking offence. We are able to tell each other what to do more of and what to avoid, which then improves our game. What motivates you to give your best on the field week after week? The desire to conquer any challenge I come across, to win and of course to make my coach and school proud. Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? My team is special because we are not just a team. We’ve expanded our relationship past our mutual love for netball. It’s more of a sisterhood and friendship. What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? I’d say actually beating one of NHS’s teams. Who is the joker of the team and why? Lanique. Definitely Lanique. She’s really witty and funny. There’s no dull moment when she’s around. She knows how to get anyone cracking. What is the most enjoyable time after a match? The most enjoyable time after a match is when we tend to each other. When we all offering each other food and drinks and making sure everyone’s okay. Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? Miss Didi

LEES IS ‘N FEES!
Die seniors het hul eie stories geskryf, interessante pamflette oor boeke en lees ontvang, boeke vasvrae gehou en lekker gelees wanneer ons ookal die geleentheid kon kry. Personeel

MOOD DISORDERS
KNOW THE SIGNS & WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD One in eight young people between the ages of 5 and 19 are at risk of developing a mental disorder, of which Mood and Anxiety Disorders are the most prevalent. Emphasis on the mental health of young people recently increased as a result of the disruption caused by Covid-19 and lockdowns which exacerbated challenges that existed before the pandemic. It has therefore once again become important to not only start talking about the mental health of young people, but also to recognise symptoms and know where to look for help, an education and mental health expert says. “The prevalence of mood difficulties among young people is increasingly becoming a concern internationally,” says Dr Jacques Mostert, Brand Academic Manager at ADvTECH, SA’s leading private education provider. Dr Mostert holds a PhD in Psychology of Education and is globally renowned in his field, having conducted experiential research in education in Denmark, the UK, South Africa and The Netherlands. Dr Mostert notes that an estimated 24% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 suffer from depression caused by the home environment, 25% are subject to cyber-bullying and loneliness, 92% of LGBT youth report depression during the ages of 11 to 19, and 80% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 report a sense of isolation that causes them to feel depressed. “It is very important to understand the signs of depression, so that action can be taken timeously should concerns about the mental wellbeing of a child arise,” says Dr Mostert. “Teachers and parents can recognise the onset of depression when a sudden change in behaviour becomes apparent and continues for at least 3 weeks or longer.
These include an atypical lack of energy, becoming increasingly irritable and agitated without a rational explanation, and a sense of being down in the dumps for no reason.” Some adolescents may withdraw from friends and family over a sustained period of time, he notes, adding that this is especially concerning if this is atypical of the normal interactions of the teen. “Another red flag is the inability to concentrate in class where ADHD or other non-neurotypical difficulties are not present, as well as regularly failing to complete classroom and homework assignments in time or often being late to class because of feeling overwhelmed. “This, coupled with unusually defiant behaviour towards teachers and other school staff, especially if this is non-typical behaviour, may indicate that the teen is experiencing difficulties with mood and affect.” In the same way as with anxiety difficulties and disorder, the student often asks to go home because of feeling ill with no discernable symptoms. The teen often has days off from class time due to doctor’s appointments, hospitalisation, or inability to attend classes. Changes in sleep patterns, a significant weight loss or gain in a short period of time and disinterest in hobbies or areas where the teen previously showed interest also raise concerns about the mental wellbeing of the teenager. Finally, a loss of future-mindedness, or talk about death or suicide, engaging in risky or self-destructive
behaviour (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or cutting, for example) are clear signs of the teen suffering from mood difficulties or a possible mood disorder. “Not all of the above need to be present, but if there is a discernable and drastic change in a young person’s behaviour which continues for a period of several weeks or longer, intervention is necessary,” Dr Mostert says. “Most importantly, parents should trust their gut,” Dr Mostert says. “If your teenager insists that nothing is wrong, despite a prolonged period of depressed mood or being diagnosed with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, parents should trust their instincts and seek help. “Should the above techniques not bring about an improvement in the mental wellbeing, parents should seek advice from their medical practitioner or a psychiatrist.”
