NATIONAL TOP ACHIEVER | CLASS OF 2023 | NSC EXAMS Melissa Muller from Rhenish High Melissa Müller from Rhenish High in Stellenbosch was crowned the top achiever in the country for the Class of 2023’s NCS exams. Congratulations Melissa. How does it feel to be the top achiever from the Class of 2023 nationwide? Initially, I was just completely overwhelmed. I think if you watch all my interviews that I had straight after the announcement, I said I was shaking because it hadn’t had time to sink in. But now that it’s a few days later, I’ve had time to reflect, and I think I’m just so excited to see what doors this opens for my future. Were you expecting the results, or did they take you by surprise? I expected to do well because I’ve done well throughout my whole twelve years of schooling, but I did not expect to be the overall top achiever. That part came as a complete surprise. The past few days since the announcements have just been completely overwhelming. But I’m taking it all in, and I’ve actually started enjoying all the interviews. I think I’m learning a lot about myself as a person just through my discussions with other people, and I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable in communicating and articulating my thoughts. So I think it has been good for me. And even though it has been slightly overwhelming, it’s been fun.
What are you going to study in 2024, and why? I’m going to be studying Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch this year. What is your message to the Class of 2024 who want to achieve the best like you did? It’s important to enjoy the year as it’s the last one and you’re going to be making memories that you’ll cherish forever. I think that the most important takeaway is that you have to know when to have fun and when to buckle down and study. If you’re going to be studying 24 /7, it’s very difficult, and you’re going to feel burnt out by the time you get to finals, and you’re not going to want to study anymore. However, if you know when to have fun and spend time with family and friends or play sports or do the things that you love, then it makes it so much easier to sit down and study when you have to.
What study hacks did you use that made you receive top marks? I specifically had an extremely busy schedule. I didn’t always have the luxury of long periods of time that I could study, especially during the term. I think I just had to realize that it’s not about how long you study but about studying efficiently. By that, I mean finding what works for you. I’m also not someone who can sit at my desk for 6 hours straight. It I have to work with past papers, I have to recite the work to my parents, I have to walk up and down the house. I just think that finding what works for you is the best way to study. What was your greatest challenge in matric? My biggest challenge during my matric was the fact that I was extremely busy. I played first team hockey, first team water polo, and I served on the school’s learner council, and I did my Cambridge A level exams for math and physics that I wrote in May of my matric year. Often, I felt very overwhelmed because I didn’t seem to have enough time in my day. However, hard work, working consistently, ensuring that I stayed up to date with my work and asking for help when I needed it helped me to get through the matric year and enjoy it as much as possible.

Who is your role model, and why? My mom is my biggest role model. This is mainly because a few years ago, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and during my matric, there was a flare-up, and she was in a lot of pain throughout the year. Just watching her put on a brave face every morning and still give 110 per cent really motivated me. Because if I’m healthy and I’m not struggling with pain the whole time, then why shouldn’t I give my 110 per cent in everything I do just as she does? What kind of encouragement did you have, and from whom? A big factor in my success is my support system, and by that, I mean my family, who are always very supportive, and the teachers at Greenwich Girls High School. They were always there for me, especially when I was away on sports tours. They would make sure that I had time to catch up on the work, and they were always very understanding and supportive. Without them, I wouldn’t have achieved what I have.

Did your mom have to remind and ask you “Melissa, go and study”, or were you self-motivated? I think that where other parents have to tell their children to start studying, my parents would often come into my room and tell me to take a break or to stop studying. I do tend to get very stressed-out during exams and then I hyper focus on my studies. Sometimes, it is important to just take a step back and take a break because the exam period is a marathon, not a sprint. So you need to pace yourself, and you will get through it in the end. What is your favourite subject and why? Maths was my favourite subject, but I loved physics, accounting and life sciences. I think the logical world of maths is very intriguing to me, and I like the order that it gives you. If you’re just doing past papers, you get used to the way that they ask questions, so although they don’t ask the same question, you become more comfortable with the way that the questions are asked and the format and structure of the paper. I think I could just calm myself during a maths paper because I knew what to expect. Name the top three school highlights that stood out the most. I think the highlights of my high school career were definitely based on sports. I enjoyed the many tours we went on, and it was great travelling to different places and playing hockey with my friends. It’s like an escape. And we all loved it. And we had such a close team bond. We had no drama, and I just absolutely love that team. And I love the sport, so tours were definitely one of my highlights. Then I’d say that the 4M athletics events, where the whole school gets together to sing and cheer and support the athletes, was just such an incredible feeling, and the sisterhood was unmatched. I’d just like to add one more highlight, and I think that is the friends that I had and made throughout high school and the people I got to meet. Engaging in conversations with people from completely different backgrounds taught me a lot about how to handle myself in different situations and how to voice an opinion properly. I think those are life skills that I will carry with me forever.

Navigating life after school The opportunities & challenges As the Class of 2023 embarks on the journey beyond school, and the Class of 2024 prepare to do so next year, these young people stand at the crossroads of exciting opportunities, daunting challenges and significantly, a bucket of options that can quickly entangle them in analysis paralysis. Leaving behind the familiar halls of high school, they enter a new chapter of their lives which is filled with a range of possibilities that will shape their futures. However, these possibilities also come with their own difficulties and risks.
However, he warns that entrepreneurial ventures also come with significant challenges, such as financial uncertainty, the impact of the entrepreneur’s limited experience, and market competition.
“After school, you will be faced with numerous choices and options, each of which will shape and impact your future journey. Understanding an overview of the main paths generally embarked upon by young people, as well as the most salient challenges, can help guide these important decisions,” says Peter Kriel, General Manager at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s leading private higher education provider.
“Navigating this path requires a combination of determination, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from both successes and setbacks. Therefore, school leavers who choose this option should be prepared to face both the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship. And even though you may not at this stage wish to pursue further education, one thing that all outstanding entrepreneurs have in common is a commitment to lifelong learning.
Higher Education Pathways One of the most common and rewarding opportunities for school leavers is to pursue higher education. Higher education institutions, both public and private, offer a gateway to in-depth learning and a platform for personal and intellectual growth.
“So, consider doing distance studies or shorter courses to bolster your knowledge in those areas that will help boost your business.”
“A higher education qualification also provides a competitive edge in the job market, as employers generally prefer candidates with relevant qualifications and skills. However, not all higher education institutions provide equal value, so it is important to match your vision for your life to an institution most likely to help you realise that vision,” says Kriel. He says some universities may have outdated curricula, overcrowded facilities, and large classes, which can affect the quality of education and student satisfaction and outcomes.
Christopher Willemse 7 Vlak 7’s - 85% Gemiddeld Afrikaans HT, Engels FAL, Wiskunde, Fisiese Wetenskap, Lewenswetenskap, Rekeningkunde, Lewensoriëntering
“The rapidly evolving business landscape encourages innovation, making it an opportune time for those with a vision to carve their niche. Entrepreneurial ventures can also offer school leavers a unique platform for innovation, personal development, and the potential to make a lasting impact,” Kriel says.
“Whether you decide to go public or private, make sure that your chosen university has industryrelevant, up-to-date curricula, excellent facilities, and smaller classes, which will enhance the learning experience and outcomes.” School leavers should carefully research and compare the different options available to them and choose an institution that best suits their needs and goals. Vocational Training and Skill Development Another opportunity for school leavers is to pursue vocational training and skill development, notes Kriel. “In a world that increasingly values practical skills, vocational training provides an alternative route to furthering your education. School leavers can pursue courses that equip them with specific, jobready skills, enhancing their employability in various industries. Although many roles require a degree, there are also rewarding positions that can be accessed with a vocational training qualification under your belt,” Kriel notes. Entrepreneurial Ventures Some school leavers may have an entrepreneurial spirit and choose to start their own business.
Entering the workforce For some young people, there are logistical or financial barriers to furthering their education or embarking on entrepreneurship, which means they will aim to enter the workforce straight after school. “Unfortunately, given SA’s high unemployment rates, these candidates will face stiff competition for entrylevel positions. We would recommend that these young people do everything possible to continue their academic journey and develop their skillset, by investigating relevant part-time short courses or online courses. This will demonstrate to employers that you are serious about your career and your future and may open up opportunities down the line. “Also be sure to regularly check in and speak to your manager or HR about your development plans and goals. Many companies offer deserving candidates subsidised opportunities for further study and professional development.” Global Opportunities The interconnected global economy opens doors for school leavers to explore opportunities beyond borders. International internships, exchange programmes, and remote work options allow them to gain exposure to diverse cultures and working environments. “Global opportunities can also broaden their horizons, enrich their perspectives, and enhance their skills. However, global opportunities also come with their own challenges, such as cultural differences, language barriers, and travel costs. Taking a gap year is often the approach of choice for international exposure, but it should be well planned and structured to add value to one’s personal development,” says Kriel. “It is also a sound strategy to ensure that if you are in the position to take advantage of global opportunities after leaving school, you are able to align the opportunity to your future vision and endeavours. Take the time to develop those skills that you can build upon later, so that your time spent abroad provides a strong base for future endeavours.”

MATRIC & FURTHER STUDY LATER IN LIFE: BUSTING MATURE STUDENT MYTHS While 2023’s Matric pass rate of 82.9% is cause for celebration, it also means that almost a fifth of students who enrolled for their NSC exams last year didn’t pass. There is however real hope for these students, and the hundreds of thousands of other South Africans who still don’t have a Matric certificate, an education expert says. “Earning your Matric certificate or pursuing further study is always within reach, if you can deal with the mental and logistical barriers preventing you from continuing your academic and personal development journey,” says Siyavuya Makubalo, Marketing Manager at Oxbridge Academy, a brand of ADvTECH, SA’s leading private education provider. She says there are a number of myths around studying as a mature student which, when carefully scrutinised, don’t hold water. “These include lack of time, lack of confidence in your ability to be successful, concerns about the labour market and unemployment rate, as well as misconceptions about being an older student,” she says. Makubalo says a recent Oxbridge graduate blows many of these misconceptions out of the water, and stands as proof of the ability to be successful and reach your dreams no matter your age.
10. St Anne’s Diocesan College (PMB)
Dawid Bekker, at the age of 44, decided to rewrite his life story by enrolling for Matric at Oxbridge Academy. He successfully passed his exams last year and, upon receipt of his Matric certificate, enrolled for the Human Resource Management N4 to begin his journey to earn a National N Diploma.
Top co-ed schools (Boys & Girls)
“Dawid’s inspiring tale serves as a beacon of hope, proving that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and redefine your path,” says Makubalo.
1. SAHETI (JHB)
“Dawid was motivated by a strong desire to rejoin the academic world and stand shoulder to shoulder with colleagues and friends. The decision to complete his Senior Certificate (As Amended) at 44 not only marked the fulfilment of an educational milestone but also reignited a profound sense of belonging and accomplishment. He continues to demonstrate to himself and others that age is no obstacle when it comes to achieving lifelong dreams. And his story is a powerful reminder that the pursuit of knowledge is timeless, and every stage of life offers opportunities for growth and personal fulfilment.”
2. Redhill School (JHB) 3. Crawford College Sandton (JHB) 4. Herzlia High School (CPT) 5. King David Linksfield (JHB)
Makubalo says achieving your Matric certificate or pursuing further study is within most people’s reach, regardless of their age or station in life. She says some of the obstacles unnecessarily preventing people from taking action include:
6. Deutsche Internationale Schule (JHB) 7. Crawford College La Lucia (DBN) 8. Somerset College (Somerset West)
Concerns about time and flexibility: Mature students often have other commitments, such as work, family, or caring responsibilities, that make it difficult to fit in studying. However this can be overcome by studying online or via distance learning through a reputable institution.
9. Reddam House Waterfall (JHB) 10.Crawford College Lonehill (JHB)
Lack of confidence: Mature students may feel that the ship has sailed and that they are not academically prepared or capable of succeeding in higher education, especially if they have been out of formal education for a long time. However a quality institution which provides flexibility and superior support will facilitate a successful academic journey. Lack of motivation: Mature students may not see the value of pursuing their Matric certificate or further education, and may have reconciled themselves to where they are in life even while knowing they didn’t live up to their potential. However furthering your education offers a range of benefits including improved self-image through self-actualisation, increased knowledge, skills, and income and career opportunities that can enhance personal wellbeing. Lack of financial resources: Mature students may face financial barriers to accessing higher education. However there are avenues that make further education affordable, and modes of study such as distance and online learning that increases access to quality education.
Plaaslike skole deel hulle nuus en prestasies aanlyn en ook elke kwartaal in die AWSUM koerant.
“Finally, mature students may feel that given SA’s high unemployment rate, and potential age-bias on the part of employers, their chances of finding work in their field of study are limited,” Makubalo says.
www.awsumnews.co.za
“However showing that you successfully pursued your studies against the odds is proof to hiring managers that you have drive and motivation and that you are able to commit and see things through. These are attractive qualities for any employer, and will position you well not despite of, but because of your age.”
