SCHOOL NEWS HOËRSKOOL DE KUILEN HIGH SCHOOL Leerders presteer in hammergooi by ASA Kampioenskappe Anja Oosthuizen het 7de plek in die Vroue O/18 Hamergooi by die ASA Jeug en Junior Kampioenskappe behaal wat 7 – 10 April by Dal Josafat in die Paarl gehou was. Dit was Carel van der Merwe se eerste jaar wat hy deelneem in die Mans O/20 Hamergooi (die ander atlete is nie meer skoliere nie). Hy kry ‘n brons medalje met ‘n afstand van 60,97m (hy mis die silwer medalje met 1cm). Alhoewel hy al goud en silwer by SA Kampioenskappe verower het, was hierdie een ekstra spesiaal weens persoonlike redes. Baie ure se oefen en harde werk (deur Lockdown en anderkant uit!) Beslis ‘n prestasie om op trots te wees.

Virtual sport series to showcase national school talent “The Showcase is a concept that was born during the Covid-19 pandemic and has grown to the first of its kind talent identification platform in South Africa”, says Gerhardi Odendaal, CEO of Old School Group, the host of The Showcase. “We designed this platform for athletes to improve their own ability at their own pace and to inspire kids that would not normally get the chance to showcase their talents to enter. Bobby Skinstad, Robbie Fleck and Vanes-Mari Proudfoot have put their support behind this initiative and we are proud to combine their skills and knowledge, together with our industry specialists, within the programme”. The Showcase is a platform that gives school kids the opportunity to showcase their talent through sport-specific conditioning drills to determine speed, strength and skill level depending on the sport. Drills include the vertical jump, broad jump,
sprinting, etc. and leaners submit the results of each test/showcase on the Showcase website and follow their results on a weekly leader board. The AWSUM School News platform and The Showcase recently came together to give kids from all over the country and all walks of life, irrespective of their background or status of the school they attend, the opportunity to compete against each other. “Think about it, for the first time ever a learner from HTS Middelburg can compete against a learner from Hoërskool Namakwaland in Springbok, so it made perfect sense to join this initiative”, says Durandt van Zyl, CEO of AWSUM. “So many times, we see talent that gets lost in the crowds at schools. Now kids can enter and compete individually, and we present the best performers for contracting by talent seekers”.
The 3 phased series consist of: Phase 1: 10-week period where learners will complete sport specific conditioning drills Phase 2: The top performing entries from Phase 1 will participate at a live event against each other and have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of an audience of talent seekers, agents, varsity and high school recruiters, bursary givers, scouts and professional sports team coaches. Phase 3: A 4-day camp will allow players to develop skills and get tips from the best in the sports industry. “Children between the ages of 12 and 18 can showcase their athleticism and fitness as part of this unique programme and make their talents visible to top recruiters”, van Zyl concluded.

Boston Primary School swimmer qualify for championships Boston Primary School are extremely proud of the Grade 6 swimming star, Jemma Hendricks! She recently participated in competitions to determine the level at which she would compete in 2021. Jemma achieved Level 3 and qualified for the championship in Oudtshoorn. She swam 50 m, 100 m, 200 m backstroke and was placed in the TOP 10!
Curro Durbanville Outreach Project Curro Durbanville learners were invited to participate in this term’s Outreach Project. Gratitude Boxes were distributed to Aristea and La Gratitude on Thursday 25 March as part of our Curro Cares project. During the Covid-19 lockdown when families were not allowed to visit their parents, grandparents at the old aged homes, the staff took on the family role, supporting their senior citizens with love, time to listen to stories, and share a pot of tea while looking through photographs of family, grandchildren. We pay homage to the staff who take care of our senior citizens’ well-being, physical and emotional, thank you!

Outing to Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary in Mcgregor Over the weekend the Student Council of 2021 along with the Brackenfell Alpha Leo Club visited the Sanctuary. A large amount of books and DvD’s were donated and these books will assist the sanctuary with their annual book sale which raises much needed funds for the care of these previously neglected donkeys. A most educational and enjoyable day was had by all. A special thank you to the parents who joined us and assisted with transport! “Donkeys have very special qualities: acceptance, forgiveness and humility.”

FitBox provides our u/13’s with pre-season conditioning We would like to thank Garth, owner of FitBox, for taking charge of our u/13 winter sport pre-season conditioning. The u/13 netball, rugby and hockey players were very excited to start their winter sport season, but did not realize that their endurance and fitness will be taken to the next level. The conditioning provided a good base for our senior coaches and we are looking forward to seeing our players develop throughout the season.

When the northwest storms of winter raged the lee shore of Woodstock / Paarden Eiland beach became the graveyard of (between 80 and 100) a sailing ship; as a result of dragging anchors. Wolraad Woltemade is the enduring hero of 1773 who rescued passengers from the wreck of the Jonge Thomas with his horse before the intrepid two drowned from exhaustion. He was visiting the beach to deliver food to his son who was guarding the goods washed ashore from the foundered Jonge Thomas.

One of our grade 12 learners, Lao Molele, was recently voted in as the vice chair of the Metro North District’s RCL, and then, she was voted in as the provincial chairperson for the RCL. The candidates gave speeches on Saturday and all the chairs, vice chairs and secretaries of all the provincial RCLs voted for their choice of chair and vice chair. We are incredibly proud of this young lady who is hoping to study international relations next year. Lao is seen wearing a green ribbon, part of an RCL campaign to promote awareness and destigmitisation of mental health issues.

Krieketster van Hoërskool Bellville vir WP-seniorspan gekies Kayla Reyneke, wat in graad 10 is, is vir die WP-senior vrouespan gekies wat in Krieket Suid-Afrika se provinsiale liga-toernooi gespeel het. Dit is ‘n baie groot prestasie en Hoërskool Bellville is baie trots op haar. Die WP-vrouespan was onoorwonne in die toernooi wat van 13 - 22 Maart in Kaapstad plaasgevind het. Die span het al vier hul wedstryde gewen.
Hoërskool Bellville-swemmer skitter by SA’s Adriaan den Haan swem ‘n bronsmedalje los in die 400 meter wisselslag ope-afdeling by die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale kampioenskappe. Die graad 11-leerder het ook deurgedring na die finaal van die 100 meter borsslag wat ná druktyd van die koerant sou plaasvind. Baie geluk met hierdie puik prestasie.

Twee van Hoërskool Bellville se swemmers het deurgedring en op provinsiale vlak deelgeneem. Stéfan den Haan (graad 8 ) en Luan Mongie (graad 10) het van 23 - 26 Maart aan die vlak 3-gala in Oudtshoorn deelgeneem. Stéfan het ‘n bronsmedalje vir die 200 meter rugslag gekry.
Die Parlement loof Hoërskool Bellville vir Akademiese Uitnemendheid Die parlement het Hoërskool Bellville gelukgewens met sy akademiese uitnemendheid. ‘n Mosie is gestel op die parlementêre sitting van 2 Maart waarin spesiaal gemeld word dat Hoërskool Bellville vir die agtste agtereenvolgende jaar ‘n 100% matriekslaagsyfer het. Die skool word ook gelukgewens omdat 100% van Hoërskool Bellville se matrieks van 2020 geslaag het met toelating tot tersiêre instellings, van wie bykans 95% slaag met Baccalaureustoelating.

HOËRSKOOL DF MALAN African Continental Championships Mckenzie Pedro het onlangs vir Suid-Afrika deelgeneem aan die African Continental Championships in Egipte. Sy presteer puik en behaal die volgende prestasies: Track (Velodrome) Racing: Goud - Junior Women Individual Sprint Goud - Junior Women Team Sprint Brons - Junior Women Individual Time Trial Vierde - Junior Women Kierin
ASA Nasionale Atletiekkampioenskappe Baie geluk aan die volgende Hoërskool DF Malan-atlete wat die afgelope naweek die WP verteenwoordig het by die ASA Nasionale Atletiekkampioenskappe in die Paarl. Ons atlete het hulself baie goed van hul taak gekwyt en baie goed presteer. Megan Scholtz 12de (800m Dogters o.16), Monja Theart 8ste (100m Vroue o.20) en 5de in die 200m. Monja was ook deel van die 4×100m Aflosspan wat ‘n Brons medalje verower het. Kanya Pieterse was ook in die top 20 in Diskus vir Meisies o.18. Marga van der Linde van die Matriekklas van 2020 was ook in die 7de plek vir Vroue o.20 100m hekkies.
WP ope skaaktoernooi DF is baie trots op Reinhardt Prinsloo in Graad 9. Hy het die afgelope naweek aan die WP ope skaaktoernooi by Paul Roos Hoërskool deelgeneem. Hy behaal ‘n algehele 5de plek en word as beste junior speler gekroon. Welgedaan, Reinhardt!
Suid-Afrikaanse Bergfiets XCO “Cup Series” Luca Ruwiel het aan die Namibia Mountain bike XCO deelgeneem wat op 10 April 2021 in Windhoek plaasgevind het. Hierdie byeenkoms was deel van die World Junior MTB XCO Series. Luca eindig in die 4de posisie. Hierdie uitslag, saam met die uitslag van die vorige twee byeenkomste, plaas Luca in die 16de posisie op die Internasionale UCI Junior Men MTB ranking. Baie geluk, Luca!

Oud-Durbie, Nicola Smith het die netbalwêreld aan die brand gespeel in die onlangse Telkom Superliga. Nicola is opgeneem in die o21 en senior Proteas netbalspanne waar sy weer haar staal gewys het. Sy is in die onlangse toernooi weer aangewys as speler van die wedstryd. Baie geluk Nicola, ons is trots op jou.
Twee Oud-Durbies, Hanno van Biljon en Patrick Kotze het vanjaar hul buiging in die Varsity Cup kompetisie gemaak vir UWK teen Maties. Albei hierdie spelers is produkte van die Hoërskool Durbanville se Rugbyprogram. Hierdie spelers is nog juniors en ons sien uit om hul vordering fyn dop te hou oor die volgende paar jaar.
