Matriek ... en die jaar daarná Dit is deesdae mode om jou kind ná matriek een “af” jaar te gun – om ’n jaar lank oorsee te gaan werk, of om bloot ’n klompie los werkies te doen ... of om sommer net leeg te lê. Is dit die regte ding om te doen? Baat jou kind daarby?
M
y kind is vanjaar in matriek en hy het geen idee watter beroep hy wil volg nie. Hy is goed in tale én in wiskunde en wetenskap. Hy is verslaaf daaraan om dinge op rekenaars te doen, maar wil dit nie noodwendig sy beroep maak nie. Dink hy aan joernalistiek? Miskien. Om aktuaris te word? Miskien. Dit is vir my ’n reuseprobleem. Ek wil nie hê hy moet ten alle koste universiteit toe gaan en dan – soos ek – ná die eerste jaar besluit dat hy eintlik ’n ander rigting wil volg nie. Maar ek het ook nie die geld om hom vir altyd te onderhou nie. WAT STAAN MY TE DOEN? As bogenoemde ook jóú dilemma is, sal jy presies weet waarvan ek praat. Ons almal wil hê ons kinders moet ’n besluit oor ’n loopbaan neem, maar terselfdertyd wil ons nie geld mors nie. Hulle moet verantwoordelik wees, maar ons wil hulle ook nie in ’n blik druk nie. WAT NOU? Só dink die jonges Michael van Rensburg, vanjaar in matriek, se belangstellingsveld is baie wyd. “Ek voel nie ek is gereed om nou al ’n besluit te neem wat die res van my lewe gaan raak nie,” sê hy. “Ek gaan dus volgende jaar ’n kort kursus doen ten einde nie-Engelssprekende kinders oorsee te kan gaan Engels leer. Só sal ek te doen kry met die werklikheid van die beroepslewe, en terselfdertyd reis én geld verdien. “Ek dink ek moet eers meer selfstandig en meer volwasse word voordat ek ’n finale besluit oor ’n loopbaan neem. Een jaar is maar kort in vergelyking met die sowat 40 jaar wat ’n mens gaan werk – en dalk sielsongelukkig gaan wees as gevolg van ’n verkeerde beroepskeuse,” sê Michael. Anelda Scheepers het verlede jaar gematrikuleer. “Ek het argitektuur gaan swot, maar binne die eerste ses maande het ek besef dat ek ’n skewe prentjie van die beroep gehad het. Dit is nie wat ek wou doen nie,” sê sy. “Ek
gaan hierdie jaar se studies voltooi, maar aanstaande jaar gaan ek met grafiese ontwerp-studies begin. “Ek dink die ideaal is om ’n jaar lank ’n internskap te doen in die rigting waarin jy belangstel, sodat jy ’n realistiese prentjie kan vorm van dit wat dié beroep werklik behels,” sê Anelda. SÓ SÊ DIE KENNER Andrea Silber, ’n beroepsvoorligter in Benoni, reken dat daar verskeie faktore is wat in ag geneem moet word wanneer iemand besluit of hy of sy dadelik moet gaan studeer, of om liefs eers ’n sogenaamde “gap”-jaar te neem. “Sommige mense het van jongs af reeds ’n passie vir ’n sekere rigting. Hulle is as ’t ware ‘gebore’ vir ’n bepaalde beroep.” Maar, sê sy, dit geld slegs sowat 20% van die leerders. ’n Verdere sowat 40% het “min of meer ’n idee” van dit wat hulle wil doen – en die res is tot in hulle matriekjaar baie onseker oor hulle toekomsplanne. “’n Sekere beroep kan dalk vir iemand baie glansryk lyk, of hulle kan reken dat hulle baie ryk gaan word as hulle hulle daarin bekwaam. Die werklikheid is egter heel anders,” sê Andrea. “Geld gaan jou nie gelukkig maak nie. ’n Amerikaanse studie het getoon dat sowat 60% werknemers nie werklik gelukkig is in hulle beroep nie en dat geld geen invloed gehad het op hulle beroepsbevrediging nie.” WAT STAAN ONSEKER OUERS EN HULLE TWYFELENDE KIND TE DOEN? Andrea sê: “Ongelukkig is ’n blote aanlegtoets nie genoeg nie. Jy moet ook iemand se persoonlikheid in ag neem by die keuse van ’n beroep. En baie ouers oefen – dalk onbewustelik – druk uit op ’n kind om ’n sekere rigting te volg.” Andrea is daarvan oortuig dat ’n “gap”-jaar die aangewese weg is om te volg as ’n kind nie doodseker is watter

Maar só ’n jaar kan vir jou baie beteken om uiteindelik die regte beroepskeuse te maak. “Dit gebeur soms dat mense in hulle dertigs en selfs veertigs by my kom aanklop omdat hulle ongelukkig is in hulle gekose beroep. Maak dus liewer seker dat jou kind gereed is om ’n besluit oor sy of haar beroepstoekoms te neem – dit is een van die belangrikste besluite in ’n mens se lewe. “Jy gaan vier of meer dekades lank werk, en die meeste van jou tyd by die werk deurbring. Daarom is dit belangrik dat jy daar gelukkig moet wees,” sê Andrea.

Save yourself a heap of cash by opting for this very clever stamp that can be used in any number of ways. My kitchen had been in desperate need of a tiled splash-back because unlike most old homes, I wasn’t blessed with horrid old kitchen tiles. 1.Cut 16 mm chip board to the size you want your panel to be, minus 2.5 mm on all 4 sides. This will ensure that the tiles hang over the wood a little bit to create a nice shadow line.

The future of makeup ... in 3D! 3D printing is all the rage these days, but for now, it’s mostly centered around little plastic doo-dads. The MINK, is a bit different.
This little printer lets users choose any color on the web, or in the real world, and using simple alreadyexisting software, print that color into a blush, eye shadow, lip gloss or any other type of makeup. See, most makeup comes from the same basic substrates, from highend labels like Chanel all the way down to the cheap stuff available at drug stores. Founder Grace Choi sources the same substrate for the Mink so that users can turn any image into any kind of makeup. The idea here is that consumers are increasingly focused on instant gratification and DIY solutions. Choi also noticed that makeup consumers aren’t always loyal to certain brands, but rather focused on convenience. With Mink, users can satisfy the desire for instant gratification while still having access to any color in the world at an affordable price.

MASCARA In the early days the ingredients in this product used to be quite scary. Things like turpentine, kohl which contained lead and aniline, an ingredient found in hair dye, used to cause blindness. But don’t fret ladies, nowadays there are regulations which strictly limit the use of certain ingredients to only those which are safe to apply to the eyes. Still, it doesn’t hurt to stay aware of ingredients like thimerosal which can cause eyelid rashes and conjunctivitis, to keep those eyes healthy and bright. Toss after: 3-6 months FOUNDATION The miracle we use every day to cover all our imperfections and leave our skin looking “naturally” fabulous, what would we do without it, right? Unfortunately a nasty truth is that most foundations, both liquid and powder, contain petrochemicals that are used as fillers. They also contain mineral oil that can build up on the skin, oil tends to clog your pores and can leave you with those unwanted pimples. If you’re a fan of using mineral powder foundations, some of those brands contain chemicals like bismuth oxychloride which can cause bad skin irritations. So know your skin type and what brands you’re using. Toss after: Jar or cream powder foundation-1 to 3 years liquid foundation-1 year LIPSTICK One word, lanolin. It’s one of the main ingredients in lipstick and gives it its greasy texture. This is the oily substance which mammals secrete to shed water from their coats. Ok, so now that you have that lovely picture in your mind, it’s not the kind of thing you’d want near those luscious lips of yours but it seems more of an ugly fact then it is harmful to
your health. However, some of the more harmful ingredients said to be in some lipsticks are lead and petrochemicals such as talc and parabens. Paying attention to these chemicals just keeps you in the loop and allows you more choice in what you’re wanting to put on your lips. Toss after: 1 year LIQUID LINER The thing we love to use to make those amazing cat eyes, yes, you know what I’m talking about. But guess what, chemicals like mercury are found in eyeliners and are readily absorbed into the skin. It can cause allergic reactions among other things. Other ingredients also found in this product are aluminium powders and BHA which are both quite commonly used in eyeliners and can be harmful to your system. Whenever it comes to your delicate eyes, it’s always best to be extra cautious with the products you use. Toss after: 3 to 4 months SKINCARE PRODUCTS These help our skin to stay moisturised and beautiful and keep those wrinkles to a bare minimum for as long as possible, and we’re all big fans of that! Unfortunately, this doesn’t come without some cons. A lot of products contain parabens which are used to lengthen its shelf life but are said to have some hormone disrupting effects. Another one used is synthetic polymers. These are derived from petroleum and give skin care products its jelly-like texture. Following the expiry date would definitely be a help no matter how difficult it might be to toss a half used jar and anyway, products past their expiry date lose their gooey effectiveness which won’t benefit your skin. Toss after: Sealed pack with pump-1 year, Jar-6 to 10 months

Anti-Bully Week The Grade 4 learners at Kenridge Primary School displayed posters for Anti-Bully Week. Mrs Berry’s class displayed their posters in the form of a circle with a fist in the centre to create the idea of Breaking Through the Bully Barrier.
Telephone directory competition Kenridge Primary School recently won the Telephone Directory Competition which was launched by MPact and Triton. The prize of R10 000 was used to buy photocopying paper. We also had an internal school competition and the class which brought the most directories won a pizza party. Shireen Brophy from MPact and Lerato Masui from Triton handed the cheque over to Mrs Sandy Fourie, who is the Recycling Organiser at Kenridge Primary. Kenridge Primary also received three White Karee trees as part of the prize. These trees will be planted on the
sports fields and will provide welcome shade in the future.

Natural Sciences
The U/13 B rugby team went on a tour to Mossel Bay, Hartenbos and George from 24 – 27 July. They won all three of their matches and had an immense amount of fun.
The Grade 7 learners had a wonderful time conducting the Natural Sciences “burning peanut” experiment. The goal of this experiment is to boil water using the energy stored in peanuts.
The Grade 7’s all gave Citizenship a High Five, when each class designed a poster during the launch of one of the ‘Six Pillars of Character’ at Kenridge Primary School. With each High Five, the Grade 7 learners pledged their support for anti-bullying!

On Saturday, 7 June 2014, the Kenridge riders braved the extreme cold and took part in the first race of the season, for the Spur Interschools League. This race was held at the Chris Willemse Track, at Willowbridge. Alex Coleské and Sarah Van der Walt both took first place
in their divisions, whilst Stefke Tolmay, Daniel Van der Walt and Carla Hollander took third place in their divisions. We would like to thank Stephen Van der Walt from Paarl Media for his generous donation of our attractive new cycling tops. They are amazing!

Laerskool De Tyger 6 AUGUST 2014 Trein Uitstappie na Vlooi
Dinsdag-oggend, 12 Augustus, heers daar ‘n opgewondenheid onder die grondslagfase leerders. Dis ons jaarlikse treinrit-uitstappie na die Vlooi-vertoning by Artscape. Vir baie leerders is dit ‘n eerste op die trein en dit het gedreun onder hul uitgelatenheid. Vlooi en die Sirkus vertoning was weereens vol avonture wat elke leerder die aand aan hul ouers oorvertel het. En saam met ons in die gehoor was een van die 7de Laan akteurs (Wilhelm van der Walt, bekend as Ty) wat gaaf was om vir fotos te poseer saam met van ons. Ai, nou moet ons weer ‘n hele jaar wag voor ons volgende Vlooi-avontuur. (gelukkig is daar leesboeke oor Vlooi vir tussenin).

Sanlam O/10 Sportdag
Leerders word beloon deur as voorbeeld te lewe volgens die skool se waardes. Ons waardes is: Liefde, Eerlikheid, Selfdissipline, Respek, Integriteit, Lojaliteit. Mag elke Tiertjie met hierdie waardes as boustene elke dag leef.
Jaarlikse instelling by De Tyger is ons o/10 Rugby en Netbal Sportdag waar ons gasheer speel vir 19 ander skole. (Geborg deur Sanlam). Daar was verskeie wedstryde gespeel en groot was die verbasing om onder die jongklomp sulke goeie kwalitieit spelers te kon sien. Baie geluk aan elke skool se spelers wat die dag hul skool verteenwoordig het op die sportveld.
Gr. 7 - Loopbane
Ek wil ‘n prokureur word, nee miskien ‘n dokter... of nee wag, ek wil ‘n “chef” word... So was die gevoel onder die gr. 7’s wat vir hul mondeling moes praat oor wat hul oor ‘n paar jaar wil word. Hulle kon aantrek soos die beroep wat hul kies vir hul toekoms. Model wees, pediater, fotograaf en selfs sake-manne was onder die keuses gewees.
Gr 1 - Blokfluit
Ons musiekonderrig afdeling bied klasse in verskeie instrumente aan; blokfluit, kitaar, klavier, sang (individueel en groep) ens. Hier is van ons gr.1leerders wat by me. Esmè Hills blokfluit neem hard aan die oefen. Die Eistedfod lê voor en volgende maand vertel ons meer daaroor, van ons koor, sang en voordrag. Sterkte aan me. Esmè Hills en Christine Pentz met die voorbereiding hiervoor.
Uit die Kantoor In hierdie stadium wil ek, mnr. Du Toit (skoolhoof), graag ‘n opregte woord van dank en waardering uitspreek teenoor elke ouer van Laerskool De Tyger wat ‘n positiewe rol in hul kind se lewe speen en daardeur verseker dat hul kind daagliks: * Skoolgereed opdaag by die skool (in hul voorkoms en akademies voorbereid); * Toegerus is om gesonde lewenswaardes prakties uit te leef; * Trots is op Laerskool De Tyger waar hul pappa, mamma of voog hul ingeskryf het; * Weet dat hul ouers en/of voogde betrokke is by die skool en positief meeleef saam met die skool; * Hul verantwoordelikheid aanvaar om tuis toe te sien dat hulle kinders die skool se gedragskode nakom en respekteer. Dit sal voorwaar ‘n wonderlike dag wees wanneer die ouers van Laerskool De Tyger as ‘n verenigde groep saam gaan werk om
uitnemend te wees in alle fasette!
Laerskool Eversdal ATKV-Applous se Koorkompetisie in Pretoria Die Laerskool Eversdal se Seniorkoor het op 31 Julie 2014 aan die ATKV-Applous se Koorkompetisie in Pretoria deelgeneem. Laerskool Eversdal is met hulle Cum Laude persentasie van 91,49% as tweede beste Laerskoolkoor in die land aangewys. Laerskool Durbanville was eerste en Laerskool Gene Louw was derde – voorwaar ‘n prestasie vir Durbanville!

The Big Brother and Sister project works extremely well at Eversdal Primary School. The Grade 7 learners, who are the Big Brothers and Sisters of the school, visit the classes of the younger learners once a term and teach them about values. This term the focus was on Self-Discipline. This is part of the Character First Programme – a programme, with fifty-one values, which is covered over a period of three-and-ahalf years.
Dian (right) and Stef (left) have been included in the Western Cape Cricket Academy’s U/13 and U/11 teams, respectively. They will represent the Academy at the Feedem Provincial Week, in Worcester, from 10 – 15 December 2014.

Laerskool Welgemoed AUGUST 2014 7 Sportnaweek
Laerskool Welgemoed was hierdie jaar baie bevoorreg om Laerskool Park (in Mosselbaai) se jaarlikse Sportnaweek (25 tot 26 Julie) deel te neem. Die Vrydag het ons o/14 hokkieseuns en dogters aan die hokkietoernooi deelgeneem. Ons skool het hulle goed van hulle taak gekwyt. Welgedaan Blessies!!
Tygerberg Children’s Choir
Courtney Hiscock (right, Grade 6) and Kaitlin Solomon (Grade 5, left) from Welgemoed Primary School were thrilled to hear that they had completed the second audition of the Tygerberg Children’s Choir successfully and had been chosen to join the choir. Well done girls, we are proud of you.
Reach for a Dream’s fundraiser
Welgemoed Primary supported Reach for a Dream’s fundraiser by wearing their slippers to school. Even the staff joined in and were each given a nice cup of coffe from KFC!

The Welgemoed Senior choir members thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Elvis Blue Choir Festival on 25 June. What a wonderful experience!!

Laerskool Welgemoed se onder 11a-rugbyspan is onlangs aangewys as die groepwenners tydens ‘n rugbydag wat deur Laerskool Panorama aangebied is. Die manne is het prag rugby gespeel die hele seisoen.
Laerskool Gene Louw Rugby – Panorama Gene Louw se O/11A- en B spanne het Saterdag 2 Augustus by Panorama aan ‘n toernooi deelgeneem. Albei spanne het baie goed gevaar. Altesaam het hulle 8 wedstryde gespeel. 6 gewen en 2 gelykop. Op die foto duik die buitesenter van die A-span, Kongawo Mehlumakulu, oor vir een van sy pragtige drieë van die dag teen Zimasa.
Chess Tournament
O/11A Netbal
The U/11 and U/13 Gene Louw Chess players participated in a School’s Chess Play-offs Tournament. The tournament was held on Saturday 2 August in Scottsdene in Kraaifontein. Our Chess players thoroughly enjoyed putting their skills to the test during this tournament. The top two schools in each age group, namely Eversdal and Curro, were announced at the prize-giving.
Ons O/11A netbalspan het aan ’n toernooi by Laerskool de Kuilen deelgeneem. Hulle het in die semi-finaal teen Panorama en in die finaal teen Durbanville gewen en is ook as die algehele wenners aangewys.
Senior Choir, Pretoria WP O/13B Rugby Hierdie spelers van Gene Louw het die WP B-span verteenwoordig in Sasolburg. Tydens die geleentheid het die WP-span uitstekend gevaar en al hulle wedstryde gewen. Hulle finale wedstryd teen die Blou Bulle het hulle oortuigend met 58 – 0 gewen.

On Wednesday, 30 July 2014, we took part in the ATKV Applous Choir Finals which were held in Pretoria in the UNISA auditorium. It was the eighteenth year in succession that we
competed in the Finals. We obtained a Cum Laude Award in the category More Advanced Primary School Choirs. We also received the award for the Best Interpretation of an African song.

Durbanville Voorbereiding 8 AUGUST 2014 Cross-country
We held our annual cross-country event at the end of last term. The runners completed a 4km route through the streets of Edgemead. All the learners in Grade 4 to 7 participated and the event was keenly contested with the some girls giving the boys a “run for their money”.

54 Dogters en hul afrigters het vertrek op ‘n 0/9 netbaltoer na Oudtshoorn. We have our first stop at Roberson Preparatory. We stopped at De Hoek, where we spent the next three days. Ons begin Vrydag vroeg met ‘n heerlike spanbousessie en gaan durf daarna die Avontuurtoer van die Kango Grotte aan en almal oorleef, juffrouens ook. Saterdagoggend is ons vroeg uit die vere om te gaan
Hockey tour
The hockey tour was a great success. On the tour we played two schools on route. Our teams played in seven matches and won four of them. We were lucky enough to play matches against Worcester Primary school as well as Milkwood Primary in Mossel Bay. The children were so excited as they could see the ocean from the sports fields. We thoroughly enjoyed riding camels and donkeys and feeding the animals at Wilgewandel. The Cango cave adventure was very exciting and the children
crawled, climbed and slid through all the narrow spaces bravely. A highlight each year, for the teachers too, is the trip to Cango Wildlife ranch. We saw many interesting animals and it was obvious that the wild cats and otters were a big hit with adults and children alike. The children enjoyed all of their meals and we were never short of laughs and interesting stories. We were blessed to all arrive home safely albeit exhausted and ready for school the next day.

On our way back we visited Kango Ostrich farm and some of us get to ride an ostrich. Ons eindig die toer met ‘n middag waar ons kamele ry, foefieslides, donkiekarre en bootjies. Ons voer ook al die diere. We enjoyed every second of this jampacked time with our netball friends.

Animal Anti-Cruelty
Maths Enrichment Day
The Ground Patrol Team of Kfm 94.5 presented the LEAD SA programme to the Grade 4 to Grade 7 learners teaching them that with every right comes a responsibility. After an entertaining video highlighting various rights and responsibilities, learners were asked questions and those who answered came forward to hold up the letters spelling out LEAD SA. The answer to final question summarized the campaign and the learner who answered won a prize. Hopefully EPS learners will make every effort to LEAD SA through responsible behaviour.
Two representatives from the Animal Anti-Cruelty League delivered a most informative presentation to the Grade Sixes. They learnt about caring for animals as part of their Life Skills programme. Many Grade 6 learners generously donated various items required by this organisation which was greatly appreciated.
Eight Grade 5 learners took part in a Maths Enrichment Day held at Elkanah Primary School. Participants from Chester House, Seamount, Elkanah and Edgemead were divided into groups. For two hours they put their heads together to solve the puzzles. Tiago Brazier of Edgemead was one the members of the group who won the completion.
North District Cross-Country
This year is the first year that Edgemead took part in the North District Cross-Country League. After hard work, training and dedication, we had a small group of Athletes that qualified for the SubZonal championships that took place at CPUT. Well done to all our athletes who always gave their best.
