Dit is ons eerste verjaarsdag, en ons sê dankie! In Mei 2013 het ‘n handjie vol skole in die Boland vir die eerste keer AWSUM-nuus gekry.

aar presies waar kry jy die tyd om die magies vol genoeg te kry – en dan so vroeg in die oggend? En dit is nie dat hulle juis opgewonde by die ontbyttafel staan en rondtrippel nie – inteendeel. Hóór dan net daar: “Ag, Maaaa! Ek ís nie honger nie!” En dan is daar nog jou man … Hy sê dat hy régtig nie voor tienuur kan eet nie. Hy sê jy moet beslis nie bodder met ontbyt vir hóm nie. Hoekom ontbyt? • Jou kind se lyfie werk net soos jou motor se enjin – as daar nie brandstof in is nie, is daar nie beweging nie. Maar as jy die regte tipe brandstof ingooi, sal die prestasie beter wees. Soos by die motor, só ook by die kinders. • Ontbyt voorkom ook moeilikheid. Kinders (en volwassenes) wat nie ontbyt eet nie, word sommer vroegoggend moeg – en kan boonop rusteloos of sommer kort van draad word. Nee, moenie dat jou mense ontbyt oorslaan nie. • Daar is ook ’n langer termynvoordeel: Hoe vroeër jou kinders (en jou man, én jy) die dag se eerste ete nuttig, hoe vroeër word julle

metabolisme wakker. Eet dus maar jou vroegoggendse ontbyt, en die kanse dat jy vetsugtig gaan wees, word baie … uhm, skraler. Brekfis vir breinkrag Dit is belangrik om seker te maak dat jou gesin die régte soort kos vir ontbyt inneem. Kies kossoorte wat ryk aan graan, vesel en proteïne is. Vermy graanprodukte wat ’n hoë suikerinhoud het. Die horlosie is teen my! Ons weet dat álle mammas juis in die oggend Súperma(n) moet wees. Veral in die winter, as dit vir almal (ook vir haar!) moeilik is om uit die bed te kom. Probeer gerus hierdie praktiese wenke om te sorg dat die ontbyt ingaan voordat jou gesin soggens by die huis uitgaan. • Sorg dat daar altyd gesonde ontbytopsies in jou spens is. • Dek die ontbyttafel die vorige aand. • Maak reeds die vorige aand ’n groot bak vrugteslaai, sodat jy teen ontbyt-tyd net kan opskep.

• Probeer om jou gesin (net) 15 minute vroeër as gewoonlik wakker te kry. • Laat die kinders jou help om die ontbyt voor te berei. • Énigiets kan vroegoggend gebeur (soos jy maar al te goed weet!) – sorg dus vir stap-en-hap moontlikhede: vars vrugte, klein bakkies jogurt, neute, gekookte eiers. Jou gesin se geluk en gesondheid is tog vir jou ’n prioriteit, Mamma. Sorg dan dat ’n gesonde en gereelde ontbyt ook op daardie prioriteitslysie verskyn. Bon appétit!

But to get the most out of your night, you need to be sufficiently prepared so that you can have a stress-free, fun evening! HOW TO PREPARE - GIRLS: * The early bird catches the worm If you are going to get your hair, nails and make-up done by professionals, it is best to book your appointment at least 1 month in advanced to secure your spot before the other girls steal all the good ones! * Don’t rush the fun Give yourself enough time on the day of the dance. * Don’t book all your appointments on top of one another. Start your first appointment early (about 12) so that you have spare time if any appointments run late and so that you have enough time to dress and take plenty of photos. OUTFIT 911  * Let’s be honest, split seams and pigeon-toed waddles in high heels just aren’t attractive. So, when choosing a dress, shoes and jewelry, opt for something comfortable -

you will be spending approximately 6-7 hours in your outfit. * Make sure you can sit in the dress comfortably and walk in your shoes without cringing, especially if you plan on dancing the night away. HOW TO PREPARE - GUYS * Suite up When choosing a suite, go for an outfit that you won’t get too hot in. You will probably spend most of the night without your blazer on, so make sure your shirt underneath is looking snazzy. * It’s a good idea to order/book your suite about 2-3 months before the dance. BOYS AND GIRLS DATE DILEMMAS  * To get the most out of your night, you should try to pick a date who you can talk to easily and who you get along with well. * Also, you need to give your date enough time to prepare themselves for your big night, so don’t leave the asking part for too late. Asking two months prior to the dance gives your date enough time to sort out their necessary arrangements. KEEP IT CLEAN  * You may already be 18, but help a brother out and keep it clean for

Madco Fundraiser As part of our annual fundraising initiative in benefit of the Matric Dance, MADCO (the Matric Dance Committee) has been actively selling tickets for a show at the Barnyard Theatre (Willowbridge), entitled BEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES. We would like to encourage everyone to buy a ticket to this enjoyable performance taking place on Saturday, 2 August 2014. Tickets are sold at R140-00 per ticket. The doors will open at 18h30 and the show will commence at 20h00.

Girls’ Choir participated in their first Large Drill Competition and were awarded second place. Well done to the Grade 8’s who marched for the first time, and to the leader, Gaby who came first in the leader category. You did us proud! Do yourselves a favour and come and watch these amazing girls perform.

We have heard some excellent performances done by the Fairmont Choir girls this term and are very proud of their results! Stellenbosch Eisteddfod: Cum Laude & Senior prize winners in the High School category, ATKV: Gold Congratulations!

Jy is nie meer ’n kind nie, maar ook nog nie heeltemal ’n grootmens nie. Amper soos daardie paddavissies wat al bene het, maar waarvan die vinnetjies nog nie verdwyn het nie! Dit klink nie altyd na die ideale posisie om in te wees nie, maar dit het tóg baie voordele … 1. Jy kan na jou gunsteling band se musiek op topvolume luister sonder om oor die geraas te kla. As jy lus het, kan jy die CD sommer drie keer na mekaar luister! 2. Jy sien jou vriende ten minste vyf dae per week, vir omtrent ’n halwe dag lank. Nog meer wanneer julle ná skool by mekaar kuier! 3. Jy kan vier ure ’n nag slaap en nog steeds vrolik voel. Jy kan selfs so nou en dan ’n deurnagflieksessie inpas sonder te veel newe-effekte. Om die een of ander rede verdwyn hierdie vermoë soos wat ’n mens ouer word – geniet dit dus terwyl jy kan! 4. Best Car Games for Kids Banish backseat boredom without spending a cent! What do parents dread most about family road trips? It’s not the cost of filling up the gas tank. It’s also not traffic or toll roads or Sunday drivers. It’s the thought of their own little cherubs stuck together in tight quarters for hours. Luckily, there are lots of ways to keep kids happily entertained and enjoying each other’s company. And the best part? You can achieve it without spending a cent. HERE ARE OUR PICKS FOR THE BEST CAR GAMES FOR KIDS: I Spy. “I spy with my little eye, something red.” This easy-to-learn game is perfect for preschoolers, and can keep them entertained for unbelievably long periods of time. The directions are simple: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.

License Plate Game. When we were kids, everyone seemed to play the license plate game on family road trips. Armed with a pad of paper, we would write down the name of each province or district as we spotted it. The goal, of course, was to nab all provinces. If we were lucky, we’d spot a Namibian or a number plate from Botswana and Swaziland, too.

I’m Going on a Picnic. This alphabet-based memory game is great for kids 5 and up.

You don’t need a game board or any materials. The game can be played with as few as two players, but it’s more fun when the whole family joins in. The first player says “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing...” followed by something that begins with A, such as apples. The second player repeats what the first person said, but adds something that begins with B. So she might say “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples and bananas.” And so on with C, D, and the rest of the alphabet. If someone forgets an item, she is out. To be fair, feel free to be lenient and give hints to younger players. The last player to be able to recite all the items on the list wins.

20 Questions. This easy-peasy game is great for younger kids, thanks to its straightforward rules. Player One thinks of a person, place or thing. Everyone else takes turns asking questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no. After each answer, the questioner gets one guess. Play continues until a player guesses correctly.

Spot the Car. For families with ’tween and teen car hounds, this scavenger hunt is a fun alternate to the license plate game. Instead of looking for different provinces or towns, you’re looking for different car models.

Wind your way through planets and stars to get from earth to Mars. Remember to avoid those black holes!

Knyp ’n stukkie harde karton met ’n wasgoedpennetjie aan die vurk van jou fiets vas sodat die speke net-net teen die karton stamp. Dit maak die lekkerste lawaai! 2. Sit op jou ma of pa se skoot Voor jy mooi weet waar jy is, sal jy te groot wees om op jou ma of pa se skoot te pas. Vertel hulle van jou drome terwyl jy só by hulle sit: Wat jy eendag wil word en watter plekke jy nog wil sien. Jou ma of pa se skoot moet een van jou veilige plekke wees. 3. Leer om ’n musiekinstrument te speel Basiese musiekinstrumente soos blokfluit, klavier en kitaar skep ’n grondslag wat jou in staat stel om later enige ander instrument te kan speel. It is snow time at CapeGate

The winter chill may have begun to bite, but there is only one place in Cape Town where you can be guaranteed to see snow and that is Cape Gate Shopping Centre in Brackenfell. The Centre Court at CapeGate will be transformed into a winter wonderland, with a 4m high, 40m long toboggan ice slide, spiralling round a giant inflatable ice cream. For the little ones there is a 15m long mini slide with two lanes, so friends can go down together in safety. For those who don’t have the need for speed, there is also a snow play area filled with enough real snow to make the most imaginative of

snowmen. “We like to do something special for the winter holidays, and this year we decided that the magic of real snow would be the best treat we could give to our customers,” said General Manager Nicholas Oliphant. “Most important for us, this is also a way of giving back to the community that we serve. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Hyprop Foundation for distribution to deserving charities in our area.” Snow Time begins at Cape Gate on Saturday June 28 and will be open Monday to Saturdays from 10am to 7.45pm (last entry at 7.00). On Sundays it is open from 10am to

5.30pm (last entry at 4.45pm). Tickets cost R50 for a full rider and R25 for a mini rider or accompanying adult. Xoliswa Mnyanda, Charnelle Khoza and Yolanda Mdiza - representing Liberia and Hlonelwa Luthuli, Beatrice Mwamba and Sonwabiso Mbiza - representing Brazil took part in the SAIIA Mini-model United Nations Debate on 31 May at Rhenish Girls’ High. The topic was “The Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict”. The British High Commissioner to South Africa, Judith Macgregor and Patrick Kawuma Male, Head of Office for the UNHCR Field Office attended this discussion. A similar event was organised in Gauteng, and delegates worked together virtually to create a unified South African Youth Communiqué on ending sexual violence in conflict that will be presented at the British High Commission on 10 June in Pretoria. Hlonelwa Lutuli was awarded 3rd place as the best speaker and Beatrice Mwamba won a prize as the most passionate speaker

The official opening of The Settlers High School Fairfield Astro turf was held on 24 May 2014 and was combined with the annual Settlers / Westerford Derby. Keenan Horne, a past pupil who plays hockey for Maties 1st team, and also represented the WP and SA U21 teams did the honours of cutting the ribbon. The Settlers has offered the use of the astro turf to local primary schools in the Bellville area with a view to develop young hockey players. All at The Settlers are excited about the future of hockey at the school and are hoping to see many top provincial, national and international hockey players emerging from the school!

Afrikaans Senior Debating Team

From Left: Kayla Barendse, Ruth Jantjies and Tatum Jacobs (all in Grade 10) took part in the Dink-of-Sink debating competition on 16 May, which is held annually at DF Malan High School.

The Interact Society visited Karl Bremer Hospital on 26 May and handed out sweets and chocolates to mothers in the kangaroo unit (for premature babies), children in the children’s wards as well as adult patients. The patients and staff appreciated it very much and received the learners with open arms. The friendly staff showed learners around the hospital and encouraged them to consider nursing as a career. All the learners enjoyed the afternoon and learned how easy it is to brighten up a complete stranger’s day by simply giving of your time and showing interest in another person’s circumstances.

Die o.17A-netbalspan van die Hoërskool Brackenfell is die Wes-Kaap Topskolewenners. Hulle is nou op pad na die SA Finaal. Oud-Brakkies wat hulle wil ondersteun ten opsigte van reiskoste ens. kan mej. Leann van Onselen (afrigter) by die skool of by leann@brackenfellhs.co.za kontak.

Charmaine Baard, tweede van regs op die foto, matriek 2013, is gekies vir die Maties I-netbalspan. Vir ‘n eerstejaar om hierdie eer te beurt te val, is ‘n uitmuntende prestasie.

Hierdie Brakkies het rede om vrolik te glimlag - hulle is almal opgeneem in 2014 WP- en Wes-Kaap-netbalspanne in hulle onderskeie ouderdomsgroepe. Hulle staan by mej. Leann van Onselen wat vanjaar die o.19A-, o.17A- én o.16A- netbalspanne van die Hoërskool Brackenfell afrig.

Luvé Meyer het in Johannesburg ‘n onderhoud ondergaan en aan ‘n modelkompetisie deelgeneem en is daarna uit 120 dogters gekies om in Amerika aan ‘n internasionale modelkompetisie te gaan deelneem. Sy is een van slegs 4 wat uit SuidAfrika gestuur word - daar is ongeveer 8000 dogters wêreldwyd wat aan hierdie kompetisie deelneem!

Rugby Mnr Niell Horn van die Hoërskool Brackenfell staan by sy o.16rugbyspeler, Branden de Kock, wat gekies is vir die 2014 o.16 WP Grant Khomo Week-rugbyspan.

Potjie

Die matriek Verbruikerstudie-leerders van die Hoërskool Brackenfell besig met hulle Potjiekos-potte. Dié leerders het drie verskillende soorte potjiekos (ook ‘n afval-potjie!) en lasagne gemaak. ‘n Prettige atmosfeer het geheers en daar was sterk onderlinge kompetisie! Die Potjiekos was hul stowegereg en die lasagne hul maalvleis prakties vir Graad 12. Die dag het sommer ook gedien as hul matriekuitstappie. leann@brackenfellhs.co.za kontak.

Hoërskool Eben Donges Dogters Rugby Chanté Groenewalt en Chuma Mshweshwe - Die twee dogters is opgeneem in die WP o/16 dogters rugbyspan wat gedurende die Junie vakansie (6 – 11 Julie 2014) aan die Nasionale Toernooi vir o/16 dogters gaan deelnaame te Durban.

ID- Dokumente

Looitjie verkope Graad 12A1 is een van die klasse meeste geld tydens die looitjie verkope ingesamel en was beloon met ‘n uitstappie na die ysskaatsbaan by Grand West toe.

Die ID projek is een van die doelstellings van lLewensoriëntering vir all die graad tiens. Die besoek van ‘n fotograaf en die Departement van Binnelandse Sake (Bellville), is jaarliks ‘n belangrike datum op die skoolkalender. Leerders is toenemend bewus van die belangrikheid van ‘n identiteitsdokument. Dit is immers die eerste stap tot registrasie as kieser. Met die volgende verkiesing kan die leerders hulle plek as waardige stemgeregtigdes inneem om hulle bydrae as goeie burgers van SA te maak.

Capitec Bursary Namhla Gcwabe received a Capitec bursary. This bursary is awarded to grade 10 learners that are continuing their studies in Mathematics FET. Here she is during the Bursary Orientation Program with guest speaker, Dr Gillian Arendse.

Koor uitslag Hoërskool Eben Dönges Gemengede Koor het by die • Tygerberg Internasionale Eisteddfod 86% behaal, • Stellenbosch Kunswedstryd ‘n Goud en • by die ATKV Applouse ‘n Silwer ingepalm.

Archery Archery is a new sport that has been introduced at the school this year. Jonah Josias has gone from strength to strength in this sport. He has moved from the black (last) group to the yellow (first) group in 4 shoots. During a competition held at Bastion School he was the only archer to shoot a full 50 on 10m.

ACE (Accept Christ Everyday), the Eben Dönges Christian Youth Movement, is hosting a talent show on 8 August 2014 in order to raise funds for the outreach to the old age home and to help sponsor the cross country learners with school tracksuits. Forty learners attended the audition sessions. Hannah van Wyk is the designer of the is inspirational poster.

Hoërskool Tygerberg JUNE 2014 7 SAICA Rekeningkunde Olimpiade

Tiere staan saam vir die redding van honderde diere

Vyftien leerders het op 14 Mei aan hierdie olimpiade deelgeneem. Die uitslae sal in Junie beskikbaar wees. Daar word slegs een provinsiale wenner aangekondig. Dis ‘n baie goeie geleentheid en gee blootstelling aan ons rekeningkundeleerders. Hier by die Hoërskool Tygerberg probeer ons in soveel moontlike vakke ons leerders aanmoedig om aan AKADEMIESE Olimpiades en kompetisies deel te neem. Dit verbreed hul horisonne.

Die Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre, is ‘n nie-regeringsorganisasie wat hawelose diere inneem, versorg, en aan hulle ‘n veilige tuiste bied. Hierdie diere word met die grootste liefde deur die vrywilligers wat daar werk, behandel en na omgesien. Die sentrum bied nie net skuiling vir hawelose, mishandelde of

beseerde dierekinders nie, maar ook vir hawelose mense, wat hul in diens neem om met die diere te werk en hulle te versorg, in ruil vir behuising op die perseel. Hoërskool Tygerberg het hierdie sentrum se nood raakgesien en saamgestaan om verskeie fondsinsamelings te hou. Dit het die vorm aangeneem van kolwyntjieen pannekoekverkopings, asook kleingeldblikkies wat in elke klaskamer neergesit is.

Ons is baie trots op mnr. Beresford wat aangestel is as die O.18 SA 7’s-afrigter. Die span het goud verwerf by die afgelope African Youth Games in Botswana nadat hulle vir Kenia in die finaal vermorsel het. Geen punte is teen die SA-span in die toernooi aangeteken nie.

Ivan word opgeneem in die SA O.18sewesspan wat in Botswana aan die African Youth Games deelneem waar hulle goud verwerf.

HTS Bellville Karate Kid

Football back on track

Jasmine de Wet was 7 years old when she started doing karate. She fought in many competitions and she finally achieved SA colours. Her dojo is situated in Stellenbosch close to Coetzenburg stadium. The name of the dojo is KOYAHZEN. Jasmine fought her first SA trials in the Bellville Civic Centre on the 31 of May and on the 8th of June she successfully competed for National colours and promotion to black belt. Now she’s been recruited by SA’s MMN academy in Johannesburg to start fighting in elite MMN training competitions from the 27th of June. She will be fighting in Beijing during the September holidays, representing South Africa.

Girls Hockey

Bellville Technical High School’s Girls Hockey team has represented the school in an outstanding manner this term. They were incorrectly entered into the league as a first team instead of an U16 team and despite losing their matches, have triumphed in the tenacity and enthusiasm they have shown on the

After a slow start to the season, Bellville Technical High School’s football teams have rediscovered their rhythm and beat Bellville South High School in three home fixtures on the 28th May. The girls kicked-off with a 2-0 win. Goals were scored by Carryn Goodman and Tauhira Latief. Bellville South had no answer to the skilful play of our girls and struggled to even get close to our half of the field. Well done girls! The boys’ U15 team faced much stronger opposition, but rallied

in the end and came through, scoring four goals to Bellville South’s three. The successful strikers were Shaun Mathé (who triumphed with a brace), Jordan Solomons and Buhle Tsukhulwana who shared the spoils, netting a goal each. The cherry-on-top was the boys U17’s triumphant display. In a hotly-contested match, they netted two goals to Bellville South’s one. Migael George and Brandon van Rhyn both found the back of the net. Well done boys!

HTS Rugby future looks bright!

As the temperature in the Western Cape drops, the rugby season at BTHS only seems to be getting better for our teams. Coaches have been happy with the quality and promise shown by HTS rugby teams during the first few matches. Hattie rugby have seen a few rising stars emerge during the first half of the rugby season, with consistent

good performances. Players like Jason Jansen (U14A), Austin Prins (U15A), Lance Johnson (U16A), Michael De Klerk and Zaakir Vermeulen (both U19A) have given the Hattie fans much to be excited about. We hope to see more from our Hattie rugby players during the 3rd term.

Die spanne en hul afrigters vir die onderskeie ouderdomsgroepe is op Dinsdagaand, 10 Junie tydens ‘n informele funksie by Nuweland aangekondig.

Stellenberg High School is proud to announce seven of their hockey players have been selected for provincial representation. Five boys made the zonal teams and two boys made the inter-provincial teams. Hoërskool Stellenberg het hierdie jaar 12 leerlinge ingeskryf vir die ATKVredenaarskompetisie wat van 11 tot 12 April by Paarl Vallei plaasgevind het. Drie juniorleerders, nl. Anandi de Witt, Amy Brooks en Kate Mouton, het tot die streekfinale deurgedring. By die streekfinale is Amy Brooks en Anandi de Witt gekies om die groter Wes Kaap te gaan verteenwoordig op 15 Augustus te Buffelspoort. Wat ‘n uitmuntende prestasie Die finale bestaan uit ‘n onvoorbereide toespraak waar leerders twee uur voorbereidingstyd kry met ‘n aantal beperkte bronne deur die ATKV voorsien.

Stellenberg High School presented the annual Play Festival on 21 May 2014. This is an opportunity for the learners to shine! There were four plays; all written and directed by learners of Stellenberg High School, and all of the productions were of exceptional quality. We would like to commend all of the learners involved for their hard work, commitment and admirable work ethic. HSD se leerders het gewys hul harte klop nie net doef-doef Durbie nie, maar ook woef-woef vir diere in nood! ’n Gedeelte van die fondse wat ingesamel is deur die Mnr & Me Durbie-kompetisie is aan die Lucky Lucy Foundation oorhandig, en verder het die leerders van die skool hondekos, katkos, komberse en speelgoed ingesamel wat toe ook aan die organisasie geskenk is.

Blaasorkes wen flashmob kompetisie

HSD se blaasorkes het op Saterdag 12 April ‘n “flashmob” by Willowbridge Winkelsentrum uitgevoer. Dit was deel van ‘n kompetisie waarin die wenskool ‘n poegie (geborg deur MotoMia) kon wen wat dan vir fondsinsamelingsdoeleindes aangewend kan word. Mense kon op Facebook en op Youtube stem en die skool met die meeste stemme het gewen – Hoërskool Durbanville! Die poegie is op 4 Junie aan die skool oorhandig.

Die Durbies het baie goed gevaar tydens Hoërskool DF Malan se Dink of Sink-debatkompetisie: ons senior span het as naaswenners uit die stryd getree (daar was 20 skole wat deelgeneem het) en een van ons seniors, Inge Odendaal, is as beste spreker in haar groep aangewys.
